Abstract:

Many companies choose to position themselves in New York. The city is one of the main cities when it comes to advertising. The competition is strong and for new companies, it is hard to survive on the market.

In our thesis we have investigated how Swedish people, who open new advertising agencies in New York, should market themselves to be successful on the market in New York.

To gain as much information as possible about this subject, we traveled to New York and interviewed three advertising agencies, who were started by Swedes, and also the Consulate General of Sweden, and Swedish Trade Council.

Our investigation resulted in that the best way to be successful on the American market is to differentiate your work from what the market has to offer. By doing this potential customers may find your work interesting and thereby chose to work with your company.

The "skyscraper problem" challenged the thought and practice of civic designers and architects prior to World War I. It referred to the incompatibility of City Beautiful principles with economically propelled land development, and to the contradiction between the notion of architecture as an art and the skyscraper's programmatic and technical requirements. Civic designers in New York had difficulty accommodating the skyscraper in their large-scale plans. They also found that it intruded on their vision for the business street, hindered their attempts to plan City Hall Park as New York's civic center, and created a chaotic skyline. Bruce Price, Louis Sullivan, Thomas Hastings, Cyrus L.W. Eidlitz, and other architects suggested alternative proposals for subjecting the skyscraper to the constraints of design . Prior to the design of the Woolworth Building, however, architectural critics did not unanimously endorse any single approach. Frank Woolworth chose a site for his proposed headquarters at the intersection of City Hall Park, New York's civic center, with lower Broadway, the spine of its business district . Woolworth commissioned Cass Gilbert to design the Woolworth Building in 1910. Gilbert shared the City Beautiful vision of McKim, Mead & White and Daniel Burnham. He also accepted the skyscraper's pragmatic requirements. Woolworth intended his headquarters to function as a speculative office building, but also to look like a civic institution. The imagery of a civic institution would represent the capitol of his commercial "empire" as well as display his civic-mindedness, wealth, and cosmopolitanism. The Woolworth Building's siting at New York's civic center, its composition, its arcade, and its sculptural and mural decoration identified it with the prevailing concept of the civic building. The soaring vertical piers of its exterior recalled Gilbert's earlier design for the West Street Building, which was influenced by the functionalist ideas of Louis Sullivan. The Woolworth Building convinced critics that a suitable architectural expression could be found for the skyscraper. Zoning reformers regarded it as a benign skyscraper. Contemporary observers attuned to City Beautiful aesthetic principles thought that the Woolworth Building strengthened the order and image of New York's civic center and enhanced the view of the city from afar.

This study examines the reuse potential of industrial land and infrastructure left abandoned or otherwise underutilized. The goal of this study is to open discussion and dialogue into such cases in North American cities that currently are liabilities and offer guidelines and methods for approaching preservation and reuse of such properties in a manner that contributes to community health, safety and welfare while maintaining historical character and significance.Abandoned or underutilized industrial land and infrastructure often pose significant environmental, safety, and land-use liability issues for municipalities. The application of creative reuse ideas centered on the notion of preserving industrial character, while creating new housing and recreation options for citizens is a major opportunity for communities struggling to cope with the negative aspects of these properties.The design project portion of this study was performed as part of an `ideas competition' conducted in 2003 by the `Friends of The High Line,' a not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving a 1.5 mile stretch of abandoned, elevated rail bed in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan Borough, New York City.

Abstract:

“Path and Place” is the design of an ‘infill’ building, primarily residential, on a vacant site in New York City. The central concern was an attempt to satisfy the elusive criteria for a home as a special place. Secondarily, it was important enhance the community with a lively place. Emphasis was placed on access to outdoor areas such as the courtyards, roof gardens, and balconies. ln these areas. it is possible to have a range of interaction among residents and neighbors. One may be an observer of the public scene, or a participant in a shared garden, or a shopper in a public market. The scale of the project is compatible with mid-rise apartment buildings surrounding the site. The structure reflects that it is built over a railroad cut which runs at an angle to the street grid. Construction is of repetitive pre-cast concrete load-bearing walls and concrete slab floors. Double-thick walls are used not only to carry utilities, but to separate one residential unit from another both physically and symbolically. There are 56 apartments varying in size from studio to large work/live units. The ground floor areas contain shops, a restaurant and a retail greenhouse. A second building is planned for the adjacent vacant site, to function as a research facility for urban agriculture. Both buildings contain courtyards—the residential one open and the research facility’s covered—which encourage pedestrian circulation from one main street to another. The roofs are used as gardens for the residents and the research facility.

Abstract:

Many critical issues in today's international commercial arbitration are unsettled. The purpose of this research is to study how the New York Convention shall be reformed or evolved on a jurisprudential basis. The New York Convention to a certain extent is a legal discourse with some crucial norms such as party autonomy and the split of powers (involving judicial review and sovereignty). Social, historical, economic and cultural factors affect the formation and application of norms in this discourse. With this in mind, the disciplines of law, sociology, and economics will be adopted occasionally. Darwinian legal theory and game theory are two major analytic approaches. There are six chapters in this dissertation. The purpose, task and methodologies of this research are outlined in Chapter 1. No research on arbitration would be complete without some discussion of the historical context, which can help to explore the differences between different times and show the evolution of critical norms and theories. The discussion concerning Darwinian legal theory and the evolution of the New York Convention is in Chapter 2. The theory can be a tool to explain the future development of the New York Convention in a changing legal environment. Game theory is often used to study such legal phenomena as jurisdictional competition and legal harmonisation. The basic idea is that states act in their self-interest like private parties in the game, which requires a "federalism" system in place to harmonise self-interest-oriented national rules. Under the New York Convention, the enforcement of vacated arbitral awards involve multiple states and naturally touches upon the actions these states may take. Game theory is used in Chapter 3 to study the possibility of harmonising national rules in the trend of de-localisation and globalisation. The modern arbitration has become more legalistic. The business community desire applicable rules and procedures more business-oriented and simpler than those used by national courts. Instead of rigid national laws, the business community prefers the stability and predictability offered by law merchant or lex mercatoria. Historical and neo-economic studies of lex mercatoria are offered in Chapter 4 to demonstrate the necessity of recognising lex mercatoria in practice. Public policy is a critical concept in the New York Convention. Apart from the arbitrability and public policy review in the enforcement procedure, Chapter 5 tries to explore the possibility of framing "normative" public policy on the basis of game theory. States are the key actor in implementing public policy. Thus, the role and function of the states in the era of globalisation will be studied as well by reference to the neo-economic theories. A conclusion is set out in Chapter 6.

Abstract:

With the women's movement of the 1960s, more career opportunities opened to women. Women now had the opportunity to work fulltime at jobs that were once held by men only. Accordingly, female reporters became a larger part of the newsroom, but male and female reporters were not being treated equally. For example, female reporters were assigned news topics that included human interest and education, and male reporters were assigned stories dealing with war and politics. Past research has examined bylines of small, medium, and large newspapers and the news topics male and female reporters have covered.The present study is a content analysis examining the years 1965, 1975, 1985, 1995, and 2005 of the New York Times. The study examined male and female bylines, along with topics of news stories, sources used by male and female reporters, and collective sources. The findings suggest that female reporters are making some strides in the newspaper business. Stories by female reporters more often appear on the front page currently than in the past. However, male reporters are writing about "feminine topics," such as education, and human interest. Lastly, female reporters use more female sources in stories than their male counterparts.

Abstract:

The Urban Renewal Program was an offshoot of the Federal housing Act of 1949, which alloted Federal funds to cities for redevelopment and slum clearance. Critics of urban renewal believe that the real intent of this program was redevelopment of the Central Business District, although officially the goal of the program was to provide a decent home and a pleasant living environment for the people. The result was improvement of inner city areas at the cost of uprooting and displacement of its residents.The Federal Urban Renewal Program ended in 1973, but local governments retained the option to use this strategy to revitalize neighborhoods. The politicians and planners of New York City have retained their faith in the Urban Renewal Program. They have modified the original program and concepts and are currently using it successfully to increase the housing stock and improve neighborhoods.The approach to urban renewal in New York City is very different from the preconceived notion that large scale demolition is the only method of implementation of an urban renewal plan. The scale and type of action varies according to specific needs of an area. Demolition is done only when necessary so that minimal relocation is required.Although provision of housing is the main thrust of the Urban Renewal Program, urban design issues are considered when preparing an urban renewal plan. This is a jointeffort by Federal, City and State agencies together with citizen input to create a better living environment for the people.This thesis analyses the reasons for this success through a discussion of case studies of current urban renewal projects in New York City. The focus of this research is on the neighborhoods of Arverne and Edgemere located in the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens. This study traces the planning process for these two urban renewal areas from their inception to the current status and identifies how urban renewal can be beneficial for the social and physical environment, and how it can be used as an effective planning tool.

Abstract:

This paper adopts a critical discourse analysis approach in order to identify and contrast the representation of the Occupy Wall Street movement in the New York Post and the New York Times. Occupy Wall Street was a protest movement against greed and financial and social inequality that started in Zuccotti Park in New York City in 2011. News media and its institutional media discourse have a power to influence people in terms of what they talk about and how they talk about it. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to make it transparent on a linguistic level that newspapers have an ability to create different discursive realities of the Occupy Wall Street movement through their language use. This is done by analysing news articles written on the same dates about the Occupy Wall Street protest in the New York Times and the New York Post using the tools global coherence, transitivity, and lexical categorisation. Results showed that in the articles in the New York Post the city represents the in-group, ‘us’, while the protesters represent the out-group, ‘them’. The repression of ‘them’, the protesters, is desired by the city that represents ‘us’. In the articles in the New York Times, on the other hand, the group of protesters is the in-group that is polarised with the police. Both the New York Times and the New York Post produce discourses where the protesters are incapable of achieving any real political or social change.

Abstract:

This thesis is an investigation of the relationship between the mass media and urban space, which takes as its object of analysis the concentration of newspaper buildings on Park Row in New York in the second half of the nineteenth century. By analysing five major New York newspapers and the architecture which housed them, commonalities in form, style and structure are revealed which are based on notions of display, spectacle, advertisement, order, and sensationalism. As daily newspapers achieved greater status in nineteenth century cities, their buildings increasingly took on Italian Renaissance, French Second Empire and Gothic forms, and became among the first skyscrapers in America. This thesis documents the designs and decisions of the construction process, as well as the interpretations and justifications of the chosen styles that were offered in the newspapers, in order to explain the form and meaning of this important phenomenon of American media history.

Syftet med detta arbete är att studera New York-modellen och om detta är ett bra arbetssätt för svensk polis. Inledningsvis presenterar jag New York-modellen och dess byggstenar. Här beskrivs Broken Windowsteorin som New York-modellen bygger på. Denna teori bygger på att polisen skall vara ute och arbeta brottsförebyggande och hålla en nolltolerans mot brottslighet. Vidare studeras projektet i Eskilstuna som utgick från att införa nolltolerans i de centrala delarna av staden när det gällde brott mot person. För att få en förståelse för tankarna bakom nolltolerans beskrivs även en del kriminologiska teorier om varför vissa personer begår brott. Resultaten från New York när det gäller minskad grov brottslighet är minst sagt häpnadsväckande. Man har under en tioårsperiod lyckats minska antalet mord och rån med över 70 %. Det finns även andra förklaringar till den drastiska minskningen av brottsligheten i New York, t.ex. den minskande användningen av crack samt den förbättrade ekonomin i USA. Min åsikt är att Sverige bör ta efter New York-modellen. Genom att införa nolltolerans mot brott på allmänna platser ger det bl.a. polisen en chans att hitta personer som riskera att hamna i en så kallad kriminell karriär. Polisen bör även ges ökade resurser för att effektivt kunna arbeta mot den ökande brottsligheten. Fram tills dess att polisen får ökade resurser anser jag att man med enkla förändringar av arbetssättet kan minska antalet brott på allmänna platser.

Abstract:

New York State historical facts including largely, government policies and actions, are presented from just before the Great Depression through the 1930s. This time period contains the terms of Governors Smith, Roosevelt, and Lehman. Special attention is paid to taxes of the time, especially the implementation of the gasoline tax. The repeal of Prohibition and the consequential taxes on alcohol, as well as school funding in the State of New York, are also discussed. State and federal revenue statistics have been gathered, and differences between these reports are noted. The statistics are then analyzed, extracting trends in receipts over the decade. Finally, a regression using the data is conducted for 13 states during the 1930s, to determine several effects on state revenue.

This diploma thesis describes the origin and development of dance in New York, its culture and the possibilities of dancing in one of the most artistic cities of the United States. The aim of my study was to find out what forms of dance appeared in the New York environment and how they influenced the development of dance in this area. The diploma thesis deals with historical events and personalities who participated in the development of dance art. The content of the thesis includes the current dance scene and the possibilities of studying dance in New York. The fact that there is no comprehensive study in the Czech Republic on this issue has become a stimulus for the creation this thesis.

Abstract:

The project is an inter-disciplinary intervention into a field that may be largely called New York Studies or, more explicitly, the uses of urban, human and cultural geography for a cultural-materialist history of New York between the fiscal crisis years of the mid-1970s through to the Market Crash of October 1987. My concern is to offer a critique of urban regime transformation in New York, the kind of private-public coalitions taking shape in response to the advent and consolidation of the FIRE (finance, insurance and real estate) industries and their socio-spatial implications, through the lenses of cultural production. I am interested in the ways in which representation - the literary, the cinematic (more sparsely and tangentially), the documented and the archival in an analytically productive conjunction - encodes and arbitrates the changes in the production of urban space in New York City. Thus, the project underlines the heightened significance of literary economies for understanding the experiential structures of urban transformation in 1970s and 1980s New York. Driven by the belief that written culture, just like visual art, may prefigure and telescope urban change, a handful of New York writers dared to tread (both literally and symbolically) where the sociologist, the urban geographer or the documenter does so by professional default, and thus engaged head-on with the hard city of socio-economic networks. This kind of ‘urbanisation of [literary] consciousness’ calls for refreshed modes of enquiry, proposed in Chapter 1, at which point fetishist and aestheticist constructions of the city in the postmodernist key become inadequate, insufficient and politically ineffectual interpretative strategies. The following three-fold case study analysis of counterculture and the underground economy, of homesteading and ‘low rent’ fiction, of the finance industry, publishing and ‘financial writing’ may offer radical opportunities for revisiting both the space of representation and the represented space of urban decline and growth through a geocultural reading for the unevenness of urban space.

My master thesis focused on "Dance art in New York City" should primarily serve as a preview of the dance world in New York City. It is a summary of famous and less known dancing schools, institutions, theaters, festivals and professional dance groups. The piece of work is divided into six chapters. The First Chapter describes some dancing schools and studios, which are located in the great City of New York. Besides general description the thesis talks about how individual institutions work and what they have in offer for their students and clients. The Second Chapter is focused on non-profit dancing institutions and centers, which are supporting entire dance community. Organizing lots of festivals and creating educational opportunities in order to support and protect the dance growth of the city itself. The Third Chapter is more detailed about festivals. Festivals are organized during the entire year and in multiple variations. We are going to get a knowledge of what exactly is happening on each individual event and is particularly intended for. The Fourth Chapter is all about theaters. On the one hand, each individual theater institution is focused on the presentation of its performances, but on the other hand, they also offer a wide range selection of educational possibilities and opportunities. Abstract:

The strict divisions of city spaces created by physical urban planning disintegrated under transformations of capitalism and its accompanying crises of overaccumulation, social urban planning was elaborated to more effectively control the capitalist city and to reintegrate the increasingly blighted areas of the once popular amusements into the economy.
This disciplined reintegration, unsuccessfully attempted in New York City's Times Square since the late 1920s. is finally being realized by the redevelopment forces that began shaping the city's spatial practices in the wake of the fiscal crisis of 1975. The development projects undertaken in midtown Manhattan following the recovery from the fiscal crisis are transforming the renowned Times Square theater district into a strikingly different urban environment. The new politics of redevelopment under the regime of flexible accumulation are almost exclusively oriented towards economic development that is equated with speculative property investments, rebuilding Times Square to promote the global city's finance monopoly. Denying the existence of the public realm and celebrating free market laissez-faire policy, the 42nd Street Development Project, under the guise of removing blight, is eliminating the undesirable and underprivileged from the new image of the Bright Lights District. Times Square as a center of the local popular culture of Broadway theaters, cinemas, restaurants, billboard spectaculars, and public celebrations, has been lost as a public space. In the redevelopment projects now imaging the Crossroads of the World, the lost city of the past is recreated through the commodification of its collective memory, fashioning a Disneyfied spectacle for the global urban center. Abstract:

In the United States, one out of every thirty-three infants is born with some sort of birth defect or congenital malformation. Certain risk factors such as age and substance use increase the likelihood of having a baby afflicted with a defect and public health nurses have worked tirelessly to educate the public about these factors. In addition, thanks to modern medicine, many defects are detected early in pregnancy, which allows for careful monitoring and planning for the delivery. In spite of these gains, birth defects continue to dominate the public health arena because they are a leading cause of death for infants and play a prominent role in long-term morbidity and disability.

Gastroschisis and omphalocele are abdominal wall defects that present with herniation of intestines and organs due to failure of abdominal wall closure during embryonic development. Of the two abdominal wall defects, gastroschisis has demonstrated a worldwide increase in prevalence over the last three to four decades. The common denominator in the literature is young maternal age. However, the relationship between maternal age and gastroschisis is unclear. This study utilized birth certificate data from New York State to examine the relationship between maternal characteristics and delivering an infant with gastroschisis.

In this study, the infants diagnosed with gastroschisis were mostly singleton births born at an earlier gestation (34-36 weeks) and a lower birth weight (1500-2499 gm) than infants without gastroschisis. From a demographic perspective, mothers of infants with gastroschisis were more likely to be younger (≤24), Hispanic or less educated. The findings also revealed that mothers of infants with gastroschisis were more likely to have inadequate prenatal care, use tobacco, illicit drugs or have a sexually transmitted disease. Mothers of infants with gastroschisis were also more likely to live in a non-metropolitan county or fall into a lower socioeconomic status. Further research is needed to continue examining the relationship between maternal characteristics and a diagnosis of gastroschisis in the newborn infant.

Abstract:

The United Nations Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards ("the New York Convention") has provided a unique legal framework for the recognition and enforcement of foreign arbitral awards and arbitration agreements. Having been adopted by 159 States at the time of this thesis, the New York Convention represents the most significant convention in the field. Having been in force almost 60 years, it is time to assess its meaning for international arbitration. This thesis first examines the contribution of the New York Convention to the development of arbitration to date and second explores whether it has a contemporary role to play. Focusing on both its contribution through its original objective and its effect on the development of a favourable attitude towards international arbitration by courts and legislators, the study demonstrates that the New York Convention has had an impact beyond that which its drafters intended. Regarding its contemporary relevance, the thesis argues that persistent issues in the enforcement of arbitral awards proves that the New York Convention has no active relevance for contributing to facilitate enforcement of arbitral awards.

At the beginning of the 20th century most Americans died at home from diseases whose onset was quick and aggressive. The average life expectancy was only 50 years. Antibiotics first appeared in the 1940's and when the baby boomers were born medicine entered an unprecedented age of transformation, one where illness could be prevented, treated and cured. Unfortunately, along with this progress have also come slower and often more painful deaths. The most common causes of death today are degenerative diseases such as cancer and heart disease. Thus, it appears that the ability to treat disease has altered medical philosophy from a platform of maintaining health to one of preventing death at almost any cost. It is into this environment that the concept of hospice care has emerged as an alternative way of thinking about death and dying, a reaction to the existing biomedical model of care. Hospice has put a humane focus on dying by creating a setting where pain is managed allowing the patient to move onto the hard work of dying, the psychological and spiritual dimension of the process. While the philosophical concept of hospice developed in the United States during the 1970's the questions surrounding the appropriate hospice environment have not yet been answered successfully This thesis attempts to give form to the notion of hospice. It attempts to create a place where dying exists within the natural processes of life and is celebrated and sanctified as such.

Abstract:

This study examines the impact of white ethnic concentration on robbery and homicide in Chicago and New York City. As one of the first to disaggregate white ethnic populations, this study has the expectation that Italian-American concentration will have a stronger influence on robbery and homicide than any other white ethnic concentrations. This study is founded on prior qualitative research suggesting that the reputation of Italian-Americans influences the behavior of outsiders in their communities. The data show there is a significant and negative relationship between Italian-American concentration and the violent crimes robbery and homicide. This relationship only exists for white ethnic concentration with robbery. These patterns occur across both cities at three different aggregate levels. The results indicate that there may be particular characteristics about Italian-American ethnic concentrations which have dampening effects on the frequency of homicide and robbery in their communities; it is speculated that a reputation for Mafia involvement is one of the protective factors.

Après avoir posé le cadre normatif du débat sur la démocratie participative, cette thèse se penche sur le rôle de la participation de la société civile dans le domaine de l’aménagement urbain à New York. Une analyse historique des politiques locales d’aménagement introduit l’étude de trois projets élaborés dans années 2000 : la reconstruction du World Trade Center et deux projets de stades et de nouveaux quartiers, Hudson Yards et Atlantic Yards. La thèse démontre que les mobilisations d’habitants jouent un rôle crucial mais insuffisant pour compenser l’influence excessive des grands promoteurs. Elle conclut que les progrès de la démocratie participative ont été mesurés à New York depuis les années 1950 mais que le dynamisme de la société civile recèle un fort potentiel pour améliorer le système politique
To what extent can citizen mobilizations compensate for the limits of representative democracy ? Do institutionalized participation procedures play a positive role ? After presenting the theoretical debate on participatory democracy, this dissertation focuses on the contribution of civil society to urban development projects in New York City. First, it provides a historical overview of urban development policies and mobilizations in New York. Then it focuses on three projects proposed for the city in the 2000s : the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site, and two stadium and high rise projects, for Manhattan’s West Side and for Brooklyn. These case studies show that neighborhood mobilizations play a crucial but insufficient role in compensating the excessive influence of the real-estate lobby. The progress of participatory democracy has been slow in New York in the last fifty years, but the dynamism of the city’s civil society holds tremendous potential to improve the political system

Abstract:

The subject of this thesis is the circumstances surrounding the emigration of European modern artists to America in the late 1930's and early 1940's, and their initial reception in the city of New York. The primary vehicle of this investigation will be the Artists in Exile show, their first collective exhibition which took place at the Pierre Matisse Gallery in March of 1942. The reason why it is felt that such an investigation is warranted is that while there is a great deal of literature concerned with the Nazis vehement denunciation of modern art and their persecution of its practitioners, little has been written on how these artists actually came to arrive in America. It is I believe, too often assumed that while their voyage may have been a difficult one, they were embraced by a nation that has perpetually proclaimed itself as a defender of democratic freedom and a haven for the oppressed. Contrary to this assumption, it will be asserted that their initial presence was largely met with resistance in America due to a historical period of economic, social, political and cultural isolationism. In Chapter One, an attempt will be made to more clearly define the historical circumstances which gave rise to American isolationism and a resultant anti-alienism, sentiments which had a direct bearing upon the cool reception of the Europeans and their work. Given the existance of such attitudes, it becomes necessary as well to identify the various groups who championed the artist refugees, their motives in doing so, and the specific strategies employed to circumvent native resistance in order to bring these individuals to North American shores. It will be asserted that this support came from a small group of liberals situated within northeastern educational institutions who were alarmed by the fascist threat to freedom of scholary and artistic expression. In addition, they were motivated by what they believed to be an unprecedented opportunity to bring to America and place at its disposal, superior levels of European scholarly and artistic achievement. Chapter Two will undertake an investigation into the reception of the Europeans in New York based upon an analysis of the problematic usage of catagories employed to place them in roles reflective of their circumstances. These terms include refugee, emigré, immigrant, exile, and alien. In addition, it will hopefully be revealed how these new roles had a deleterious effect upon the self perception of the emigres, seriously affecting their critical output as exiles. Chapter Three will be devoted to the Artists in Exile show itself. Specific focus will be on the strategies employed in its manifesto and why for the most part, they were unsuccessful in winning over a viewing public largely resistant to European modern art. In addition, specific works exhibited in the show will be analysed to see how they registered the varied concerns of the artist emigrés at this time in history. Finally, the conclusion will deal with two additional shows of European modern art in that same year; the First Papers of Surrealism, and Peggy Guggenheim's Art of This Century. It will be maintained that the strategies employed in this latter show were to a high degree, largely responsible for the eventual winning over of needed patrons necessary for the acceptance and continuation of European modern art in America.
