Abstract:
Abstract. This paper presents a package of modified temperature-index-based snow water equivalent models as part of the hydrological modeling system NewAge-JGrass. Three temperature-based snow models are integrated into the NewAge-JGrass modeling system and use many of its components such as those for radiation balance (short wave radiation balance, SWRB), kriging (KRIGING), automatic calibration algorithms (particle swarm optimization) and tests of goodness of fit (NewAge-V), to build suitable modeling solutions (MS). Similarly to all the NewAge-JGrass components, the models can be executed both in raster and in vector mode. The simulation time step can be daily, hourly or sub-hourly, depending on user needs and availability of input data. The MS are applied on the Cache la Poudre River basin (CO, USA) using three test applications. First, daily snow water equivalent is simulated for three different measurement stations for two snow model formulations. Second, hourly snow water equivalent is simulated using all the three different snow model formulae. Finally, a raster mode application is performed to compute snow water equivalent maps for the whole Cache la Poudre Basin.

Abstract:
Abstract. This paper presents two new modeling components based on the object modeling system v3 (OMS3) for the calculation of the shortwave incident radiation (Rsw↓) on complex topography settings, and the implementation of several ancillary tools. The first component, NewAGE-SwRB, accounts for elevation slope, aspect, shadow of the sites, and uses suitable parameterization for obtaining the cloudless irradiance. A second component, NewAGE-DEC-MOD's is implemented to estimate the irradiance reduction due to the presence of clouds according to three parameterizations. To obtain a working modeling composition that is comparable with ground data at measurement stations the two components are connected to a kriging component. With the help of an additional component, NewAGE-V (verification package), the performance of modeled (Rsw↓) is quantitatively evaluated. The two components (and the various parameterizations they contain) are tested using the data from three basins, and some simple verification tests were carried out to assess the goodness of the methods used. Moreover, a raster mode test is performed in order to show the capability of the system in providing solar radiation raster maps. The components are part of a larger system, JGrass-NewAGE, their input and outputs are geometrical objects immediately displayed in a geographical information system (GIS). They can be used seamlessly with the various modeling solutions available in JGrass-NewAGE for the estimation of long wave radiation, evapotranspiration, and snow melting, as well as standalone components to just estimate shortwave radiation for various uses. The modularity of the approach leads to more accurate physical-statistical studies aimed to assess in depth the components' performances and extends their results spatially, without the necessity of recoding any part of the component.

Abstract:
Abstract. The paper presents a snow water equivalent model as part of the hydrological modeling system NewAge-JGrass. The model take in account of the main physical processes influencing the snow melting (precipitation form separation, melting and freezing modeling) coupled with the snowpack mass conservation equation. The snow melting depends not only on the air temperature but also on the radiation received by the pixel. The model is perfectly integrated in the NewAge-JGrass modeling system and uses many of its components such as shortwave radiation balance, krigings and automatic calibration algorithms. As all the NewAge-JGrass components, the presented model can be executed both in raster and in vector mode and the simulation time step can be daily, hourly or sub-hourly as the user needs. The model is applied on the Cache la Poudre river basin (CO, USA). Three are the applications presented in the paper. Firstly, the simulation of snow water equivalent in three different measurement stations is performed. Model parameters are calibrated and model performances are quantitatively computed by comparing simulated and measured snow water equivalent time series. Indices of goodness of fit such as Kling–Gupta Efficiency, Index of Agreement and Percentage Bias are computed. Secondly, the representativeness of the model parameters in different locations is discussed. Finally a raster mode application is performed: snow water equilvalent maps on the whole Cache la Poudre river are computed. In all the applications the model performance are satisfactory in term of goodness of fitting measured snow water equivalent time series. The integration of the model in the NewAge-JGrass system allows the used to o enjoy all the component of the system: input data computation, output maps visualizetion in the GIS JGrass, model parameters automatic calibration.

Abstract:
This essay examines how articles in the Swedish spiritualistic journal Efteråt? – which por- trayed the afterlife – were affected by imperialistic discourse and its associated power structures. The source material for the investigation is articles that were published between 1891- 1919 as channelized messages through mediums, and which depict what throughout the essay is referred to as ’the other side’: realms beyond death.Any inherent magical aspect of the channelling phenomenon has been removed and the essay treats the mediums as authors and the written messages as their textual productions. These have been assessed with a postcolonial perspective focused on eurocentrism, christocentrism, evolutionary theory, otherness and the idea of Western progress. Using Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis, the texts’ actual use of language, its discursive influences and its reflecting of imperialistic ideologies have also been assessed. The result shows that the imperialistic discourse that dominated the Western knowledge productions in the Victorian age, is directly mirrored in the way the articles in Efteråt? portrayed ’the other side’ and its inhabitants. Westernized conceptions are being treated as universal which shows in how ’the other side’ is structured around evolutionary principles that glorifies progress and development. ’Ethnic others’ are held as less developed, barbaric, stupid and in the need of help from Western experts. The texts also reflects the christocentric essence that places Western theology as the ultimate developed spirituality. And they portray hierarchical power structures and imperial dominance in a normalizing and moralizing way.Even if the Spiritualistic movement often is contextualized as a radical, progressive new spirituality and seen as the dawn of ’New Age’, this essay shows that the construction of ’the other side’, as it is narrated in the analyzed articles of Efteråt?, is merely a discursive cultural expression of the imperialistic ideologies that dominated the Western society at the time the articles where written and published.Key words: Spiritualism, Imperialism, Ideology, Postcolonial, Eurocentrism, Evolution, ChannelingNyckelord: Spiritualism, Imperialism, Ideologi, Postkolonialism, Eurocentrism, Evolution, Kanalisering

Abstract:
In 1769, the Shah dynasty from Western Nepal, promoting Hinduism and speaking Nepali, had conquered the Kathmandu Valley and integrated it into a much wider Nepal. As a consequence, the language, as well as the Buddhist tradition of the local indigenous ethnic group, the Newars, became minority ones. A century later, the State launched a repressive policy towards both Newari language and Buddhism, and the result has been the development of identity awareness, both in the linguistic and in the religious fields, among the Newar intelligentsia, who entered cultural resistance. Therefore, since the beginning, both language and religion have been associated, although activists hardly acknowledge this double-sided feature of their commitments. This study of the current situation of both language and religion vitalities among the Newars of the Kathmandu Valley aims primarily at documenting the research on relations between language and religion, and at testing the application of evaluation tools of language vitality to the evaluation of religious vitality. Furthermore, it confirms the necessity we are facing to explore and conceptualize more the links between language and the social dynamics it often sustains but also depends on

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the following research question: How does immersion occur in a virtual game environment? Specifically, this study will focus on the Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) World of Warcraft. Approaching the question using a grounded theory methodology, the study finds that immersion takes place in two primary areas: Environmental and Social. Environmental immersion concerns technical aspects of the game including aesthetic detail, sensory stimulation, and narratives. Social immersion evolves as a paradigmatic opposition of cooperation and intimidation. Players are not fully immersed in the world until they have accepted cooperation as their dominant paradigm for play.

Abstract: The optimization models applied to hydrothermal scheduling on the Brazilian National Interconnected System (SIN) shall provide the order of hydrothermal generation that meets the Brazilian market of electric energy in a way that the demands of power are attended and the operating costs, minimized. Due to the hydroelectric predominant feature in the Brazilian system, the planning aim to determine the optimal hydroelectric generation that minimizes the thermoelectric supplementation necessary to attend the power demands of Brazilian SIN. The long-term hydrothermal scheduling plan model operating nowadays in the Brazilian electrical system is the NEWAVE, a stochastic model that represents the system by equivalent subsystems of energy, through composite reservoirs, and has its solution decompounded of individualized plants by other models, like the DECOMP and SUISHI-O. The ODIN model is the energy planning methodology developed at UNICAMP that treats indirectly the stochasticity of affluent flows. This is done by means of an inflow predictor and an optimizer for individual plants, thats provide the planning decisions at each interval to order the hydrothermal scheduling considering the provided flow generation for each plant and the optimization of the hydraulic generation of the system. This work presents a comparison of performance between the models of hydrothermal scheduling NEWAVE and ODIN, in their obtainment of optimized hydrothermal scheduling for the Brazilian SIN

Abstract:
This chapter on Roth’s life growing up in Newark, New Jersey, focuses on the city’s history and colorful personalities, from boxers to gangsters. Longy Zwillman, kingpin bootlegger who discovered Jean Harlow, and Rabbi Joachim Prinz, who will sponsor Roth’s first trip to Israel in 1963 and appear in The Plot Against America, are key figures. Family life and the challenges his father faced as an insurance salesman for Metropolitan Life are crucial elements in understanding Roth’s origins, as well as the protective care of his mother and the adventures of his brother who went off to art school and the Navy. The chapter also analyzes the importance of Newark, especially the Weequahic section, for Roth’s writing and how its reality differed from his often idealized depiction of the city. Sports, movies, girls, and high school, as well as the story of the Jews of Newark, become the center of the chapter, expanded by his early love of reading and trips to the library.

Abstract:
Regular wave theories such as Airy and 5th order Stokes are widely employed to compute wave loads on offshore platforms. These deterministic approaches are based on certain wave heights and frequencies, so, it does not suitably account for the randomness of the sea state. The most accurate methods for estimating extreme responses are based on time domain but they need long duration’s storm inputs and are computationally very time consuming. NewWave theory offers a different time-domain approach for the extreme response evaluation. By constraining a NewWave with a pre-determined height within a completely random background Constrained NewWave is generated. Constrained NewWave allows for the easy and efficient evaluation of extreme response statistics; achievable without the need to simulate many hours of real time random seas. In the present study the extreme response of a Jacket offshore platform has been evaluated using a 5th order Stokes wave; long duration random reproduction of the sea surface; and a Constrained NewWave method. In general, it has been found that the Constrained NewWave method provides reasonably accurate results, as compared to those from long duration random reproduction of the sea surface, with significantly lower computational time.
