Abstract:
This essay examines how articles in the Swedish spiritualistic journal Efteråt? – which por- trayed the afterlife – were affected by imperialistic discourse and its associated power structures. The source material for the investigation is articles that were published between 1891- 1919 as channelized messages through mediums, and which depict what throughout the essay is referred to as ’the other side’: realms beyond death.Any inherent magical aspect of the channelling phenomenon has been removed and the essay treats the mediums as authors and the written messages as their textual productions. These have been assessed with a postcolonial perspective focused on eurocentrism, christocentrism, evolutionary theory, otherness and the idea of Western progress. Using Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis, the texts’ actual use of language, its discursive influences and its reflecting of imperialistic ideologies have also been assessed. The result shows that the imperialistic discourse that dominated the Western knowledge productions in the Victorian age, is directly mirrored in the way the articles in Efteråt? portrayed ’the other side’ and its inhabitants. Westernized conceptions are being treated as universal which shows in how ’the other side’ is structured around evolutionary principles that glorifies progress and development. ’Ethnic others’ are held as less developed, barbaric, stupid and in the need of help from Western experts. The texts also reflects the christocentric essence that places Western theology as the ultimate developed spirituality. And they portray hierarchical power structures and imperial dominance in a normalizing and moralizing way.Even if the Spiritualistic movement often is contextualized as a radical, progressive new spirituality and seen as the dawn of ’New Age’, this essay shows that the construction of ’the other side’, as it is narrated in the analyzed articles of Efteråt?, is merely a discursive cultural expression of the imperialistic ideologies that dominated the Western society at the time the articles where written and published.Key words: Spiritualism, Imperialism, Ideology, Postcolonial, Eurocentrism, Evolution, ChannelingNyckelord: Spiritualism, Imperialism, Ideologi, Postkolonialism, Eurocentrism, Evolution, Kanalisering

Thesis, Normandie, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017NORMR055/document.

Abstract:
In 1769, the Shah dynasty from Western Nepal, promoting Hinduism and speaking Nepali, had conquered the Kathmandu Valley and integrated it into a much wider Nepal. As a consequence, the language, as well as the Buddhist tradition of the local indigenous ethnic group, the Newars, became minority ones. A century later, the State launched a repressive policy towards both Newari language and Buddhism, and the result has been the development of identity awareness, both in the linguistic and in the religious fields, among the Newar intelligentsia, who entered cultural resistance. Therefore, since the beginning, both language and religion have been associated, although activists hardly acknowledge this double-sided feature of their commitments. This study of the current situation of both language and religion vitalities among the Newars of the Kathmandu Valley aims primarily at documenting the research on relations between language and religion, and at testing the application of evaluation tools of language vitality to the evaluation of religious vitality. Furthermore, it confirms the necessity we are facing to explore and conceptualize more the links between language and the social dynamics it often sustains but also depends on

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the following research question: How does immersion occur in a virtual game environment? Specifically, this study will focus on the Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) World of Warcraft. Approaching the question using a grounded theory methodology, the study finds that immersion takes place in two primary areas: Environmental and Social. Environmental immersion concerns technical aspects of the game including aesthetic detail, sensory stimulation, and narratives. Social immersion evolves as a paradigmatic opposition of cooperation and intimidation. Players are not fully immersed in the world until they have accepted cooperation as their dominant paradigm for play.

Abstract: The optimization models applied to hydrothermal scheduling on the Brazilian National Interconnected System (SIN) shall provide the order of hydrothermal generation that meets the Brazilian market of electric energy in a way that the demands of power are attended and the operating costs, minimized. Due to the hydroelectric predominant feature in the Brazilian system, the planning aim to determine the optimal hydroelectric generation that minimizes the thermoelectric supplementation necessary to attend the power demands of Brazilian SIN. The long-term hydrothermal scheduling plan model operating nowadays in the Brazilian electrical system is the NEWAVE, a stochastic model that represents the system by equivalent subsystems of energy, through composite reservoirs, and has its solution decompounded of individualized plants by other models, like the DECOMP and SUISHI-O. The ODIN model is the energy planning methodology developed at UNICAMP that treats indirectly the stochasticity of affluent flows. This is done by means of an inflow predictor and an optimizer for individual plants, thats provide the planning decisions at each interval to order the hydrothermal scheduling considering the provided flow generation for each plant and the optimization of the hydraulic generation of the system. This work presents a comparison of performance between the models of hydrothermal scheduling NEWAVE and ODIN, in their obtainment of optimized hydrothermal scheduling for the Brazilian SIN

This thesis considers how cities can improve employment outcomes of recently released, formerly incarcerated people. The Newark Prisoner Reentry Initiative (NPRI) is a unique case where the city directly managed six resettlement providers. The city also pledged to use its influence to support the goals of NPRI by encouraging employers to hire NPRI participants. I use interviews and performance data to understand two questions: (1) To what extent did the city, as a policy-maker and a grant manager, help organizations meet their benchmarks and change the hiring behavior of employers? (2) What are the prerequisite organizational characteristics, including resources, structure and strategy, for successful programs, and are these characteristics bound to a certain scale? On the whole, NPRI participants fared much better than the typical person leaving New Jersey state prisons, though program performance was negatively correlated with size of enrollment. The city, for its part, demonstrated competence in holding organizations accountable to performance goals, but failed to influence employer behavior. To strengthen and scale the initiative, I recommend first, that the city set specific hiring goals for local employers and engage its resettlement providers to enforce these goals. Secondly, the city should fund program directors and additional case managers, so programs retain their capacity to relate to stakeholders as they grow. A cost-neutral agreement with the state could provide the necessary funds to continue the initiative.

Abstract:
This thesis presents a descriptive and analytical study of Newar marriage and kinship in Kathmandu. Essentially, this is a study about caste and the role that it plays in Newar life, in particular, the way that caste is expressed through marriage patterns and kinship rituals. This study also shows that although the link between one's caste and one's traditional caste occupation is breaking down, one's caste identity is still maintained through one's choice of marriage partner and one's participation in kinship rituals which occur at the various levels of caste organization. Newar caste organizations are also undergoing a process of transformation. In addition to the traditional caste organizations, there are also new intercaste organizations which cater to the ritual needs of those in intercaste marriages. This recent phenomenon coincides with the professionalization of other caste organizations, which, in addition to performing their ritual duties, have also taken on the role of social and economic guardians to their caste members. It could be argued that although some forms of caste are no longer applicable, in other ways, caste in Newar society has never been stronger or more important. Despite the claim that intercaste marriages are on the rise, the data shows that the majority of Newars still practice caste endogamy. Membership into a caste organization - which is through the initiation ritual - is so important to Newar identity that intercaste couples have started their own caste organization to ensure that their offspring will officially be a part of a caste group. In sum, this study shows that despite the fact that caste is no longer recognized in the Nepalese constitution, caste is still the main vector of Newar identity, and this is seen most clearly through the analysis of Newar marriage and kinship.

Evans, Antony David 1977. "Responses to airport delays : a system study of Newark International Airport." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/28254.

Airport delays are a significant problem in the United States air transportation system. Between 1997 and 2000 the number of flights delayed increased by between 20 and 25% per year, despite only a 3 to 5% increase in enplanements per year. Newark International Airport (EWR), one of New York City's primary airports, is one of the airports in the United States most impacted by delays. Newark had the highest percentage of operations delayed in 1999, and was second only to LaGuardia Airport in 2000. Nearly 85% of delays at Newark are caused by adverse weather impacting the airport. Because of limited capacity and a very full schedule operated at the airport, when adverse weather impacts the airport departure operations are severely delayed. Despite this, unlike the national average, delays at Newark have not increased significantly since 1998. This indicates that the airlines, air traffic control (ATC), and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey have successfully adapted. On June 29, 2000, a research team from MIT visited Newark Airport to identify the key problems and assess the effectiveness of any adaptations made. Results of this study indicate that airspace capacity limitations downstream of the airport become a primary flow constraint at the airport, and that when these constraints occur they are the source of most surface delays. Responses to the delays at Newark have been both tactical and strategic. Key tactical ATC responses examined include the application of restrictions; re-routing with the help of the National Playbook; the use of decision-aiding tools; improved inter-facility communication; and utilization of runway 11-29. Key strategic ATC responses examined include the formation of the Air Traffic Control System Command Center, and the New York airspace redesign. A number of tactical airline responses to delays were also examined, including cancellation of low priority flights and the transfer of the passengers to ground transportation; pre-sequencing of departures; and improved access to information. Key strategic responses examined include changes to the schedule operated at the airport, and particularly flattening out of the banks operated; a new fleet, which requires less maintenance and has greater dispatch reliability; and improved relations with the FAA and Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. After examination of the problems at the 10 most delayed airports in the United States, the applicability of the key responses identified at Newark to these airports was also examined in detail. Those airports for which the most responses were identified to be applicable were Atlanta, San Francisco, Philadelphia and Dallas/Fort Worth. Those responses identified to be most applicable to other airports were the further extension of the National Playbook to other regions, the use of decision aiding tools, airspace redesign, pre-sequencing of departures, and a decrease in the number of operations at the airport. A policy analysis was completed for each of these responses.

Abstract:
The Newgate Calendar, one of the earliest true crime documents, has rarely been studied. This paper aims to demonstrate that these texts illuminate various aspects of the culture that both produced and consumed the narratives the Calendar contains. In particular, I have focused on two different categories of crimes against the body. The Calendar's early volumes, which were published while state-sponsored punishment was still a public spectacle, offer several accounts that deal with the confinement and torture of living victims. Later volumes do not include torture narratives. Instead, anxiety over the treatment of dead bodies caused an increased interest in stories detailing postmortem abuses like dismemberment. Through the application of critical lenses like feminist, queer, sociological, and popular cultural approaches to various criminal biographies offered in the Calendar, I have attempted to show the ways in which these texts tracked shifts in the dominant culture.

Fitzpatrick, Amy Diane. "An Assessment of Expenditures by Camp Henry Patrons in Newaygo County." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2012. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/702.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis evaluates expenditures made by Camp Henry patrons during the 2005 summer camp season while traveling to and from the residential camp located in Newaygo County, Michigan. A purposive random cluster sample was collected via self-administered questionnaire on the arrival days of weeks 3, 7, and 8 of the 8 week summer camp season. The data revealed expenditures in each of the categories on the instrument; lodging expenses, food and beverages, private auto expenses, retail shopping, recreation activities, and “other”. Expenditures for the 55 participants and the individuals traveling with them totaled $4,558. The category with the greatest reported expenditures was food and beverage, totaling $1,645 and the category with the least reported expenditures was lodging, totaling $170. First summer camper group expenditures and returning camper group expenditures were evaluated to determine if a relationship exists between inexperienced and experienced campers, a one-factor ANOVA was run with the logarithm of total expenditures and, with a P value of 0.077, no statistically significant relationship is found. A one-factor ANOVA was utilized to evaluate the relationship between participants residing within 35 miles of the residential camp facility and those living further away. With a P value of 0.101, it is determined that hometown does not have an effect on patron expenditures. A regression analysis of the logarithm of total expenditures and income ranges was performed to determine if an individual’s annual income has an effect on expenditures; with a P value of 0.626 no relationship was found. Lastly, a regression analysis of the logarithm of total expenditures and participant age was run to determine if a relationship between a participant’s age and the amount spent exists. With a P value of 0.574, no statistically significant relationship exists. Limitations of the study include a small sample size, the inability of participants to accurately predict return trip expenditures, and the close proximity of participant residences to the camp facility. Although no statistically significant relationships were found, the expenditure information can be used to develop partnerships between local businesses and the residential summer camp. The possibility of exploring the camp going population and their monetary value to host communities is a worthwhile subject for further scrutiny. The information presented here can be used as a starting point for future studies on expenditures of residential camp patrons.

Abstract:
The Virginia Solite Quarry assemblage of Tanytrachelos ahynis, with its exceptionally abundant and uniquely preserved specimens, offers an opportunity to quantify multiple aspects of vertebrate taphonomy. The presence or absence of 128 skeletal elements (i.e., bones) as well as the presence or absence of 136 skeletal variables (i.e., morphometric dimensions) were recorded for 100 specimens collected from two distinct layers within the quarry (lake cycles 2 and 16). Anatomical specimen completeness (or the percent of bones/variables present in a specimen) is low (the median specimen preserves 14.5% of bones and 11.8% of measured variables) in spite of protection from high energy currents, predators, and scavengers afforded by anoxic bottom waters. Specimen size, as approximated by femur length, does not significantly impact specimen completeness. Also, post-exhumation weathering, duration of exposure before burial, and morphotype groupings do not appear to have significantly affected anatomical specimen completeness or articulation. Presence or absence of the enigmatic heterotopic bones represents a true biological signal as indicated by the lack of significant difference in anatomical specimen completeness between the two morphotypes as well as qualitative taphonomic evidence. When anatomical specimen completeness has been corrected for post-depositional faulting, lake cycles 2 and 16 differ from one another significantly in terms of articulation and anatomical completeness of specimens. Specimens with soft-bodied preservation are significantly more articulated, but not significantly more complete, than specimens without preserved soft tissues. Preservation frequency of bones/variables (or the percent of specimens in which a bone/variable is present) varies greatly, but is generally low (an average skeletal element is present in 19% of specimens and an average variable can be measured in 12% of specimens), with significant preferential removal of smaller skeletal elements. Hind limbs, specifically femora, are most commonly preserved. Low anatomical specimen completeness and positive correlation between bone size and frequency of preservation both indicate specimen disturbance by minor hydraulic currents. These taphonomic patterns suggest a moderate-depth depositional environment (slightly shallower than previously proposed).

Abstract:
This thesis argues that conversion to Christianity in the Nepali city of Bhaktapur is closely connected with ethical attitudes towards suffering in Bhaktapurian churches. This argument is situated within broader debates in the anthropology of Christianity. Anthropologists have debated the extent to which Christianity is a force for cultural discontinuity, and have often connected it with modernity and individualism. I contribute to these discussions by showing how distinctively Christian conceptions of suffering may promote cultural change by stimulating new understandings of selfhood and ethics. The first three chapters explore the social life of Bhaktapur's Hindu majority. I describe how the last fifty years have seen a process of cultural unsettlement in Bhaktapur; one aspect of this unsettlement has been a disruption of traditional norms of care and deference. It is in this context that the distinctive ethics of Christianity have proved attractive to some. Those who convert have typically experienced a significant episode of suffering, and have felt themselves to be failed by those around them. They find in churches a framework that emphasises the moral significance of inner experience (I call this 'inwardness') and addresses affliction more in terms of ethics than ritual. I describe these ethics in terms of 'care': they stress presence with the afflicted person, engagement with their experience, and appeal to God in prayer. After two chapters describing Christianity in Nepal and Bhaktapur in general terms, I devote four chapters to examining different categories of Bhaktapurian Christians: those who have experienced healing, women, leaders, and youth. I focus on four conversion narratives, and relate these narratives both to other ethnographic materials and to broader trends in Bhaktapurian and global Christianity. I highlight the significance of the values of inwardness and care, and of narrative itself, in the life-worlds of Bhaktapurian Christians.

Geology

Cyclic stratigraphy has been recognized in the Newark Basin for many years. Each package, referred to as a Van Houten Cycle (VHC), generally has three divisions: shallow lake, deep lake, and subaerial exposure. Van Houten (1964) first proposed that Milankovitch orbital forcing was responsible for the manifestation of these ~21 kyr cycles. Although root traces have been observed in VHCs by others, no detailed paleopedological analysis has been performed that examines the relationship between individual VHCs, orbital forcing, and paleosol development. The Middle Passaic Formation of Late Triassic age is continuously exposed for over 30 meters along a railroad cut that follows Manatawny Creek near Pottstown, PA. Six VHCs were identified at this location and the upper most three were selected for detailed study due to their strong development. Three Van Houten Groups (VHGs), consisting of VHC Division 3, Division 1, and Division 2 respectively, were formed in order to group paleosol profiles (Division 3) with stratigraphically adjacent lacustrine units (Divisions 1 and 2) since the lakes directly affect the paleosurface through inundation and erosion. Petrographic analysis suggests that soils in this section only developed to the degree of Entisols or Protosols. Voids are lined with chalcedony and cored with calcite indicating diagenetic alteration. Molecular weathering ratio calculations proved unreliable due to diagenetic alteration of the strata. Magnetic susceptibility was measured on two intervals of the section, but is not well-suited to fractured, massive rock due to signal attenuation. Paleosol development is greater in instances where the overlying lake is poorly developed. Paleosols that are associated with a shallow lake or no lake likely have more time to develop than paleosols associated with deep lakes as the precipitation filling the lake would saturate the soil, hindering pedogenesis. The VHCs' ~21 kyr interval forces time to be the limiting factor for pedogenesis in this section, ending in either sedimentation or inundation. However, time is also tied to climate as it modulates from relatively moist to relatively drier within a VHC. Orbital forcing is the ultimate controlling factor in soil formation since time, climate, insolation, and precipitation are all interrelated and influenced by it. Relief is independent of orbital forcing and a possible control on soil formation within the Basin. Soils that formed distal from the bounding fault may not have been subject to inundation due to their higher elevation. Further research is needed to establish paleocatenary relationships of soil within the Newark Basin.

Abstract:
The closure of the European airspace due to the eruption of the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull in 2010 proved a major challenge for airlines and aviation authorities on a global scale. In contrast, more seasonal adverse meteorological conditions afflict many airports in the northern eastern seaboard of the United States. Newark Liberty International Airport (KEWR) is a representative airport that endures severe weather based delays. This dissertation explores the utilisation of Bayesian Networks (BN) and heuristic analyses to investigate weather based delays at Newark Liberty International airport (KEWR). In particular, it aims to understand which weather variables (namely, precipitation, visibility and wind) have the most impact on weather based delays at KEWR in contrast to past studies that have studied more generic weather phenomena (e.g. thunderstorms) at the same airport. An analysis using temporal functionality with Bayesian Networks (BN) software and heuristic analyses was conducted. Data extracted from weather and aviation based websites was extracted using software. The quality of the information was cross referenced with official data sources and validated using BN tools. The results revealed a causal correlation chain between crosswinds above a certain threshold and high delays at KEWR at various points in the experimentation. Though other meteorological elements examined had an impact on delays, airport authorities and airlines can mitigate these factors to a certain scale using Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) approved technology and training. Consequently, the implications could be significant on existing FAA and regional policy with Ground Delay Program (GDP) and Noise Abatement Procedures (NAP). These policies can be profound and far reaching for airlines, in terms of operating procedures and fuel cost implications. These findings can further alter the balance between efficiency, public safety and airline costing affecting all major stakeholders as this dissertation will investigate.

Malfray, Hubert. "Pour une esthétique du crime : les « Newgate Novels », essai de définition d’un genre populaire." Thesis, Paris 4, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PA040237.

Full text
Abstract:
This study focuses on a minor literary genre, the Newgate Novel, published between 1830 and 1847. Its aim is to define the scriptural modalities that lie at the core of these works of art which do not constitute a school of writing, but were grouped together by the critics of the time. Between biography and romance, the novels depict thieves, murderers or highwaymen. Following the Newgate Calendar, they were extremely popular at the time of their publication, a success which can be linked to the way they mingle crime news, legendary criminal figures and a poetical stance. The purpose of this study consists in assessing how crime and aesthetics meet in these novels to form the core of the literary project. The novels are caught in-between dissidence, sensationalism and obscenity: they fascinate as much as they repulse their audience. These scandalous pieces of writing keep negotiating with the conventions of their time – should they be social or moral conventions, the criminal code or the aesthetic standards. Thus, they can be situated in a paradoxical place, oscillating between their allegiance to the past and their necessity to affirm their difference, their novelty: they are the objects of desire, a key-concept around which gravitate the notions of crime and aesthetics. The heroes of the stories are also objects of desire, constantly longing for their origins. The novels were a success because they managed to affirm their popular identity: hesitating between the melodramatic and the carnivalesque, they aimed at attracting the new mass-reading public who were invited to indulge in a feverish, devouring reading experience

Abstract:
As societies and cultures evolve with time, human settlements also transform gradually. These days, globalization and modernity bring about rapid changes and in a matter of a few years, the face of a settlement is changed forever and the lives of the people are no longer the same. While such changes are inevitable, it will be suggested that they should be conducive to the existing built environment. Change brought about by capitalistic and consumeristic pressures does not necessarily have to take away the identity of a settlement.Because I am a person from Kathmandu, Nepal, I chose that place to study how and why change is evidenced in the environments, lifestyles and house forms of the local people, and to explore how specific families both maintain and mediate their cultural values amidst these changes. As much as Kathmandu is an Asian center of glorious art, architectural, and cultural history, it is also a center of development, growth and change. In recent years, a growing trend in Kathmandu is for homeowners to leave their ancestralhome in and of the historic city and to relocate to new urban areas. This thesis focuses on this particular trend of relocation.Available literature, documentation from other sources, and the author's few years of professional experience in Kathmandu, shape the analysis of the settlement patterns, house forms, socio-cultural activities and the economics of the urban Kathmandu in the past and the present. The families, which have lived through the changes -- as they have moved from the historic center to new neighborhoods -- are the ones who can best represent the current scenario. Four such families were studied. Their answers to a lengthy questionnaire along with photographic documentation and physical mapping of their old and new dwellings have formed the main body of research. In their responses, the local people spoke volumes on how change is necessary, desirable, and inevitable. Still, there are major cultural values that never change. They exist in the spirits and to some extent in the way people conduct daily chores in the house. To a greater extent, however, cultural affinity exists at the larger scale of a neighborhood. Quality of life in the historic city is brought about by its rich festivities, sociability of spaces and the feeling of communal harmony. Although the society is changing into a more individualistic one and material and spatial needs are fulfilled in the new location, people miss the quality of life in terms of the socio-cultural attributes of the old place. As designers, we can extract upon these attributes to bring back their lost sense of place.Being sensitive to these values, design can become more a response than an imposition.

Abstract:
The present study seeks to investigate the linguistic behavior of two Newari high castes, called Shresthas and Udas, living in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, in their use of Newari, the ethnic language, and Nepali, the national language. Specifically, the study attempts to explain the hypothesis that the Hindu (Shrestha) Newars are becoming monolingual in Nepali while the Buddhist (Udas) Newars are maintaining their bilingualism in Nepali and Newari. To do so, a questionnaire was distributed to a total of 96 subjects, selected through quota sampling procedures. The questionnaire not only elicits information about the situational and societal variation in the subjects' use of Newari and Nepali but also reveals their attitudes and opinions about the differential use of these languages. Also, the participant observation method was employed to supplement and validate the responses derived from the questionnaire survey. The results from this study suggest a diglossic behavior in the Udas' use of Newari and Nepali, which, however, is remarkably different from those found in classic diglossic settings. This, in turn, leads to a reexamination of Ferguson's concept of diglossia. The Shresthas, on the other hand, frequently alternate between Newari and Nepali regardless of situation. Such linguistic differences between these two groups are related to their varied social networks and relationships; the Udas Newars' greater use of Newari is due to their closed social networks while the Shresthas' greater use of Nepali is due to their open social networks. The data on the analysis of the subjects' attitudes and opinions toward Nepali and Newari indicate that the Udas Newars are positive and favorable toward Newari while the Shresthas are ambivalent in their opinions toward these languages. This study, therefore, emphasizes a strong need for bilingual education in the country. The results of the present study show that the Udas' use of Newari exclusively at home and with children is a major factor in its retention. Among the Shresthas, it is rapidly losing ground to Nepali. Newari then is gradually dying away among the Shresthas, and will continually do so in the absence of institutional support.

Abstract:

Innovation and regional development are two topics that were (separately) very much discussed by scholars, and in recent literature there have been attempts to combine and show how the former can contribute to the latter. At the same time, different types of regional agglomeration systems have been developed and discussed such as: clusters, hubs, innovation systems, technopolies, and knowledge cities. However, there is a significant gap in literature when it comes to innovation zones. As a result, there is a need to look into the role of innovation zones in regional development and examine the possible benefits (if any) that the innovation zones can provide to the region to which they are affiliated

The construction of bus rapid transit lite (BRT lite) systems on Springfield Avenue and Bloomfield Avenue in Newark is assumed to provide lower travel times and improved reliability of service to local and regional economic and activity centers. This thesis determines the ability of the existing and suggested zoning policy for the City of Newark to support development that capitalizes on the added accessibility. First, a literature review of accessibility, BRT Lite, transit oriented development, and transit corridor development (TCD) provide the framework for understanding TCD and the policy options available to achieve it. Then, the history and economic geography of the City are analyzed to determine whether the City and transit-served areas in the region should expect growth. Finally, two analyses are undertaken to gauge the development opportunity and mismatch (or match) between TCD type development and the existing zoning policy. A physical conditions analysis evaluates the land use availability and appropriateness for transit corridor development at the station areas outside of downtown Newark. A zoning analysis at three case study stations answers whether the existing and suggested policy allows for TCD in terms of high density and mixed land uses. The thesis finds that significant development opportunities exist on the corridors on vacant parcels and underutilized land. The thesis finds that the existing zoning policy at the three key stations allows for high density and mixed use on large underutilized parcel(s). Further efforts to realize redevelopment on the corridors will require attention to other land use policies including form and design guidelines, parking policy, and financial incentives.

Paris 3, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008PA030101.

Full text
Abstract:
Defoe’s novels are narratives of moral corruption in which the main characters progress from the most justifiable crimes to the most corrupted sins. Defoe claims that these stories of fallen men and women are intended as a warning against the evils of moral degradation. However, the absence of a just punishment for his sinners who stop short of a real repentance undermines the contention that Defoe’s purpose is straightforwardly didactic and that his major preoccupation is morality. This study is intended to demonstrate that Defoe tends to favour the economic considerations over the religious and moral principles. In fact, Defoe’s purpose is not to teach his readers moral or religious rules of behaviour but to show them how to prosper in the exciting world of business. The didactics of self-interest, the virtues of ingenuity, individual material profit, the proper management of financial resources, the judicious use and exchange of working capitals are the secrets of commercial success and should at all times be given priority over honesty. Religious integrity might, in fact, be violated in the service of commercial wealth. It is only when Defoe’s sinful characters learn these commercial values that they are redeemed and regain favour in the eyes of God. They become successful and prosperous entrepreneurs whose maxims of conduct and aims in life have much in common with Defoe’s Complete and Successful Tradesman

Brown, Kerry Lucinda. "Dīpaṅkara Buddha and the Patan Samyak Mahādāna in Nepal: Performing the Sacred in Newar Buddhist Art." VCU Scholars Compass, 2014. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/3635.

Abstract:
Every four years, in the middle of a cold winter night, devotees bearing images of 126 Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and other important deities assemble in the Nepalese city of Patan for an elaborate gift giving festival known as Samyak Mahādāna (“The Perfect Great Gift”). Celebrated by Nepal’s Newar Buddhist community, Samyak honors one of the Buddhas of the historical past called Dīpaṅkara. Dīpaṅkara’s importance in Buddhism is rooted in ancient textual and visual narratives that promote the cultivation of generosity through religious acts of giving (Skt. dāna). During Samyak, large images of Dīpaṅkara Buddha ceremoniously walk in procession to the event site, aided by a man who climbs inside the wooden body to assume the legs of the Buddha. Once arranged at the event, Dīpaṅkara is honored with an array of offerings until dusk the following day. This dissertation investigates how Newar Buddhists utilize art and ritual at Samyak to reenact and reinforce ancient Buddhist narratives in their contemporary lives. The study combines art historical methods of iconographic analysis with a contextual study of the ritual components of the Samyak Mahādāna to analyze the ways religious spectacle embeds core Buddhist values within in the multilayered components of art, ritual, and communal performance. Principally, Samyak reaffirms the foundational Buddhist belief in the cultivation of generosity (Skt. dāna pāramitā) through meritorious acts of giving (Skt. dāna). However, the synergy of image and ritual performance at Samyak provides a critical framework to examine the artistic, religious, and ritual continuities of past and present in the Newar Buddhist community of the Kathmandu Valley. An analysis of the underlying meta-narrative and conceptualization of Samyak suggests the construction of a dynamic visual narrative associated with sacred space, ritual cosmology, and religious authority. Moreover, this dissertation demonstrates the role of Samyak Mahādāna in constructing Buddhist identity in Nepal, as the festival provides an opportunity to examine how Newar Buddhists utilize art, ritual, and performance to reaffirm their ancient Buddhist heritage.

Full text
Abstract:
A member of America's established cultural elite, John Cotton Dana (1856-1929) aimed to wrest cultural and economic authority from the nouveau riche through his role as the first director of the Newark Museum. In his favorite exhibition, "New Jersey Textiles," he encouraged local immigrant laborers to improve the design of goods that he simultaneously prompted middle-class women to purchase. He imagined that, as a result, Newark's manufacturing sector would blossom without nouveau-riche involvement; the region would soon rival its new-money neighbor, New York City. Under Dana's supervision, Jarvis Hunt (1859-1941) designed the 1926 Newark Museum building, employing the conventions of contemporary office architecture (predating a similar strategy at the Museum of Modern Art) to articulate this vision. The Metropolitan Museum of Art designed a series of exhibitions indebted to Dana's ideas. Ironically, the Metropolitan has received credit for innovations that Dana had designed to challenge New York's preeminence.
