As newborn screening programs transition from paper-based data exchange toward automated, electronic methods, significant data exchange challenges must be overcome. This article outlines a data model that maps newborn screening data elements associated with patient demographic information, birthing facilities, laboratories, result reporting, and follow-up care to the LOINC, SNOMED CT, ICD-10-CM, and HL7 healthcare standards. The described framework lays the foundation for the implementation of standardized electronic data exchange across newborn screening programs, leading to greater data inte

How do newborns learn to see? We propose that visual systems are space-time fitters, meaning visual development can be understood as a blind fitting process (akin to evolution) in which visual systems gradually adapt to the spatiotemporal data distributions in the newborn’s environment. To test whether space-time fitting is a viable theory for learning how to see, we performed parallel controlled-rearing experiments on newborn chicks and deep neural networks (DNNs), including CNNs and transformers. The exact relationship between the electroencephalogram (EEG) measured at the scalp, and the internal dynamical organisation of the brain that generated it, is still very much an open question. This has led to difficulties in EEG analysis and interpretation, which in turn has relegated the EEG largely to the role of a corroborative, rather than stand alone diagnostic tool. This thesis investigates the use of signal processing techniques for more accurate quantification of the EEG. It is anticipated that through improved quantification, a better diagnostic value for the EEG will result.

Using longitudinal data, the Conclusion shows that over time abortion laws have generally become more liberal. But this movement is neither straightforward nor linear. Focusing on the largest countries in the World Values Survey sample, it shows how attitudes have evolved over time and where they may be headed. Abortion laws in the Global North are moving in a progressive direction. But there are important exceptions. Moreover, the liberalization of attitudes is not straightforward.

Abstract:
Protein C (PC) deficiency associated with hereditary venous thromboembolic disease was first reported in 1981 and is inherited as an autosomal dominant disorder. The prevalence of heterozygous PC deficiency is estimated to be 1 to 4% in venous thrombotic diseases. The homozygous PC deficiency is even rare, and has been reported in only about 10 families througout the world. It usually presents in newborn infants as purpura fulminans or severe thrombotic disease. We herein report two newborn brothers in a Chinese family, who manifested with purpura fulminans soon after birth and died at age of

ABSTRACT Background: Stunting is one of the global nutrition problems, which is recorded in the six global nutrition targets in 2025. Stunting is defined as a condition when a child’s body length or height based on age and sex is below -2 SD of the median standard of child growth by World Health Organization. The prevalence of stunting in newborns in the world is 3.8%. The causes of stunting are multifactorally occurring from the age of conception to the age of two. Factors that influence stunting of newborns during the prenatal period are maternal height, maternal weight gain, anemia, and inf

We describe the completeness of prenatal data in maternal delivery records and the prevalence of selected medical conditions and complications among patients delivering at community hospitals around Atlanta, Georgia. Medical charts for 199 maternal-infant dyads (99 infants in normal newborn nurseries and 104 infants in newborn intensive care nurseries) were identified by medical records staff at 9 hospitals and abstracted on site. Ninety-eight percent of hospital charts included prenatal records, but over 20 percent were missing results for common laboratory tests and prenatal procedures. Fort

Public and private service statistics data reveal that from March through the end of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic had at least a short-term impact on adolescent sexual and reproductive health outcomes. The COVID-19 pandemic is estimated to have resulted in an annualized increase of: 20,738 adolescents with an unmet need for contraception 8,884 unintended pregnancies among adolescents Approximately 10.1 mi

Abstract:
This paper attempts to identify the climatic effect on birth outcomes in Brazil and, thus, to predict the potential impact of climate change. Panel data models indicate that excess and lack of rainfall have the most important harmful effects on newborns' health; temperature stresses and low relative humidity also have effects. The use of climate change forecasts for Brazil suggests a possible increase of 305 neonatal deaths annually and, for families in the Primary Care Program, three thousand additional low-weight births each year. The paper further examines public policy's role in minimizing

Abstract:
This paper estimates the impact of a large temporary poverty relief program, Uruguay's PANES on birth outcomes. Using program administrative data and longitudinal vital statistics, a significant and precisely estimated reduction in the fraction of low-weight newborns (less than 2,500 g. ) on the order of 10 to 20 percent was found to be a result of treatment. The cash (and in-kind) transfer components of the program were considered to drive the results, suggesting that unrestricted social assistance has the potential to positively affect birth outcomes, most likely through improved nutrition.
