Recent research regarding soil stabilization has been increasingly concerned with environmental performance. The present paper applies the newly developed CO2(eq) geotechnical calculator, created by the European Federation of Foundation Contractors and the The Deep Foundations Institute, to assess the behavior of three different binders used in the construction of cutter-soil mixing columns, which formed an embankment/bridge transition wedge. The binders were based on ordinary Portland cement, on a blast furnace slag and cement blend and alkali activated fly ash. Results show that the last two

The performance of a variety of materials added to asphalt binders and mixtures to change their properties, particularly with respect to rutting and cracking, was investigated. Two approaches were taken. The first was a field trial of seven modifiers. The modifiers evaluated included plastomers, elastomers, chemical modifiers, and particulates. The second approach was a laboratory study of the effects of these modifiers on binder and mixture properties. The field trial showed that modifiers are not essential to ensure that the pavement will not rut; none of the mixtures evaluated here exhibite

Moulding sands with an alkyd binder are used primarily in the production of massive castings, mainly of cast steel, but they can also be used for castings made of other alloys. Moulding sands with an alkyd binder compete with self-hardening sands with phenolic and furfuryl resins. They have several advantages in common with furan moulding sands, such as excellent knock-out properties and very good quality of the casting surface. Additionally, alkyd moulding sands do not contain nitrogen, sulphur, formaldehyde and water, various sands can be used as a matrix: quartz, chromite, zircon or olivine
