Abstract:
Background: Preceptors play an essential role in supporting new nurses during the transitional period in professional roles. Moreover, graduate nurses experience several challenges during their transitional role from students to professional nurses, despite the considerable relationship between nurses and preceptors.Purpose: The study aims to evaluate the relationship between the experiences of nurses using Casey-Fink Graduate Nurse Experience Survey and the number of preceptors in Saudi hospitals. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was adopted, and Casey-Fink Graduate Nurse Experience Survey was used to collect data from 84 newly graduated nurses. Descriptive and regression analysis was used for data analysis. Results: Results showed that there was no statistically significant relationship between the responses of 5 factors of the Casey-Fink Graduate experience survey and the number of preceptors. Based on the survey, (33.8%) had to stress whereas significant causes of stress were student loans (41.9%), personal relationships (13.5%), living situation (27%), and finances (10.8%).Conclusion: No statistically significant relationship was found between variables including; support, patient safety, communication/leadership, professional satisfaction, and job satisfaction. The significance of preceptorship programs should be considered by the primary health care corporation to support and prepare preceptors of newly graduated and recruited nurses.

Abstract:
Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the mobility of newly graduated nurses from regions where their nursing schools were located to regions where they took up their first jobs, and to identify factors influencing nurses' mobility. Methods: Data from the Graduates Occupational Mobility Survey, collected annually from 2010 to 2014 by the Korea Employment Information Service, were analyzed. The sample consisted of 1,488 graduates and 1,229 nurses who were employed on a full-time basis in hospitals. Multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify factors associated with geographic mobility. Results: Among the nurses working in hospitals, 69.2% had their first jobs in their nursing school regions and 11.3% in their high school regions. Fifty-two percent of the nurses worked in the capital region; 47.2% thereof had moved from a non-capital region. Nurses were more likely to work in their nursing school region when they were female, were older, graduated from a high school located in their nursing school region, graduated from a college (vs. university), had a lower nursing school performance, and expected lower monthly wage, compared with those who left their nursing school region. Conclusion: Education and remuneration policies are required to reduce geographical mobility to the capital region.

Abstract:
This study involved newly graduated nurses performing in a public hospital and aimed at apprehending how they interpret the reality of their practice as well as their knowledge and experiences; at identifying and problematizing aspects related to the caregiving practice in terms of compliance with the autonomy bioethical framework and at pointing out ways to overcome the problems identified. The strategy adopted for data collection was the focal group and the theoretical framework was based on the Grounded Theory. Two phenomena emerged from the results: 1) Perceiving the fragility of nurse and patient autonomy and 2) Moving towards the strengthening of nurse and patient autonomy. This allowed for the identification of the core category: movement undertaken by newly graduated nurses towards the strengthening of their professional autonomy and towards patient autonomy. Understanding the experience enabled us to expand the knowledge concerning newly graduate nurses' coping, thus favoring our action as nursing professors.

Abstract:
Nursing departments in hospitals must evaluate the practical competency of newly graduated nurses and assist them to increase their competence. Competency assessments often consider multiple qualitative attributes and use expert knowledge as the basis for decision-making. This study proposes a hybrid multiple attribute decision-making (MADM) model that determines practical competency of the newly graduated nurse as an evaluation framework. A causal influence-network diagram (CIND) and influential weights are obtained from nursing experts’ clinical experience using the decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL)-based analytical network process analysis (DANP). The MOORA-AS method is then used to evaluate the ability expectation ratio-gap for newly graduated nurses in practice. The CIND is used to allow each newly graduated nurse to reduce the performance ratio-gaps between the current level and the aspirational level from a systematic perspective. The empirical data applies to a third-class and a first-class hospital in China. The results show that the proposed hybrid MADM model has reliable results and allows nursing department decision-makers/managers to easily evaluate and systematically improve competencies for newly graduated nurses.

Abstract:
Background: Nursing practice takes place in a social framework, in which environmental elements and interpersonal relations interact. Ethical climate of the work unit is an important element affecting nurses’ professional and ethical practice. Nevertheless, whatever the environmental circumstances, nurses are expected to be professionally competent providing high-quality care ethically and clinically. Aim: This study examined newly graduated nurses’ perception of the ethical climate of their work environment and its association with their self-assessed professional competence, turnover intentions and job satisfaction. Method: Descriptive, cross-sectional, correlational research design was applied. Participants consisted of 318 newly graduated nurses. Data were collected electronically and analysed statistically. Ethical considerations: Ethical approval and permissions to use instruments and conduct the study were obtained according to required procedures. Data were rendered anonymous to protect participant confidentiality. Completing the questionnaire was interpreted as consent to participate. Findings: Nurses’ overall perception of the ethical climate was positive. More positive perceptions related to peers, patients and physicians, and less positive to hospitals and managers. Strong associations were found between perceived ethical climate and self-assessed competence, turnover intentions in terms of changing job, and job satisfaction in terms of quality of care. Nurses at a higher competence level with positive views of job satisfaction and low turnover intentions perceived the climate significantly more positively. Conclusion: Nursing management responsible for and having the power to implement changes should understand their contribution in ethical leadership, as well as the multidimensional nature of nurses’ work environment and the interaction between work-related factors in planning developmental measures. Future research should focus on issues in nurse managers’ ethical leadership in creating ethical work environments. There is also a need for knowledge of newly graduated nurses’ views of factors which act as enhancers or barriers to positive ethical climates to develop. Interventions, continuing education courses, and discussions designed to promote positive ethical climates should be developed for managers, nurses, and multi-professional teams.

Abstract:
BackgroundThe transition from student to professional nurse is an important milestone in the development of newly graduated nurses. Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) has been shown to reduce symptoms of stress in those engaged in regular practice (Bazarko, Cate, Azocar, & Kreitzer, 2013; Kabat-Zinn, 1990).MethodThe quality improvement project used a one-group pre-test/posttest design to measure newly graduated registered nurses’ awareness of mindfulness and perceived stress.ResultsMindfulness awareness improved from pre-intervention (M = 3.66, SD = .81) to post-innovation (M = 4.03, SD = .69) although this was not statistically significant, (t[67] = 1.93, p = .057). There was a statistically significant decrease in perceived stress from pre-innovation (M = 19.47, SD = 7.16) to post-innovation (M = 15.71, SD = 6.90), (t[66] = 2.16, p = .034). Qualitative themes of increased patient safety, communication, and teamwork were identified.ConclusionMBSR has the potential to increase mindfulness and decrease perceived stress in newly graduated registered nurses, encouraging improved patient safety, communication, and teamwork.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Horizontal violence, defined in the literature as ‘interpersonal conflict between two nurses at the same hierarchical levels in organizations’, often associated with bullying, affects the well-being of nurses, care recipients and the professional image of nursing and the organization due to increased turnover. One in every three newly graduated nurses is a victim of horizontal violence, although they do not always know how to define it. Aim: To investigate the direct and indirect experiences of horizontal violence in newly graduated nurses as well as to shed light on the phenomenon, on its awareness and recognition. Methods: A qualitative phenomenological study was conducted between September and October 2018 with newly graduated nurses, with a work experience ranging between 6 months and 3 years. The interviews were conducted face-to-face, consisting of a first open general question, followed by semi-structured questions. Ethical considerations: The study was conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki, and the protocol was approved by the Institution Review Board. Results: From the analysis of the interviews of the 21 participants, four main themes were identified: the ‘enemies’, that is those who exercised violence, the ‘weapons’ used by them to exercise violence, the ‘effects’ and the types of ‘armor’ identified to protect themselves. Discussion: Horizontal violence is rarely recognized by newly graduated nurses, even though our sample had directly or indirectly experienced horizontal violence. Tackling the phenomenon starting from the undergraduate degree courses, focusing on effective support and more protection by the organization leaders were the silent requests that emerged from this study. Conclusion: Preventing horizontal violence is important for nurses’ professional and private well-being, for professional conduct and for the quality of care provided to patients.

Abstract:
Background: A newly graduated nurses usually shows uneasiness in communication and dealing with clinical situations. The preceptorship program was created to develop new nurses' competencies. As well as many institutions helped their new nurses by designing a special program to ensure a smooth transition into manpower, the new graduate nurses program help them to acquire competencies which are necessary to practice the job. Aim: this study aimed to identify the nurses’ satisfaction and perception, explore the relationship between nurse experience and nurse satisfaction and measure the relationship between nurse experience and their perceptions toward support, organizing and prioritizing, communication/leadership, and professional satisfaction during the first year of practice in the oncology setting Method: A cross-sectional descriptive design was used. The participants consisted of all nurses hired by the hospital from April 2018 to April 2019. Results: A total of 101 new graduates, aged 21 to 40 (m= 24.02, SD= 2.788), responded to the survey (response rate 57%). Overall, the length of the preceptorship programs varies, and it was ranged from 8 to 12 weeks and from 4 to 6 weeks for new graduates who had completed the internship in the hospital; the respondents reported a feeling of confidence and comfort when they were asked to share their experience, 69.3% of respondents had chosen the workload (e.g. organizing, prioritizing, feeling overwhelmed, ratios, patient acuity) considering it the most difficult transition experience. The study showed significant positive relationships between nurses’ experience and their satisfaction (salary, benefits package, Opportunity to work straight days, and Opportunities for career advancement) and significant negative relationships between nurses’ experience and their perception of support factors and professional Satisfaction factor. Conclusion: the results of this study reflect the challenges experienced with fear, stress, and confidence during first year of practice. Considering the new graduate nurse's experience and voice will reflect positively on practice.

Abstract:
Sigrid Wangensteen has the recent years been engaged in doctoral studies at Karlstad University in combination with teaching at the bachelor program in nursing at Gjøvik Universtity College. This doctoral thesis is focused on newly graduated nurses, their perception of competence, critical thinking dispositions, research use and their experiences of being a nurse during their first year as a nurse. Qualitative and quantitative methods were used. The very first period of time was experienced as tough but when looking back the newly graduated nurses appreciated the tough time. They described the need for a supportive environment, and gaining competence through managing challenging situations. The leadership role constituted the main difference between being a student and being a nurse. In the quantitative study the nurses perceived their competence as good, rating the Helping role competence category highest and the Ensuring quality competence category lowest. With respect to critical thinking the CCTDI total scores indicated a positive disposition. As regards the CCTDI subscale scores the nurses reported highest values for intellectual curiosity (Inquisitiveness) and lowest for intellectual honesty (Truth-seeking). The nurses reported a positive attitude towards research, but only 24% were classified as research users. Supportive environment was a significant predictor for research use. Critical thinking was a prominent predictor for attitude towards research, for research use and perception of competence. Nurse leaders in clinical practice and nurse educators in nursing education and clinical practice play an important role in nurturing student nurses and newly graduated nurses with respect to critical thinking. There is a need to assess whether teaching strategies meet the requirements of critical thinking and EBP in nursing education.

Abstract:
Aims and objectives: To describe newly graduated nurses’ experiences of the intervention practitioner training nurse.  Background: Newly graduated nurses need support to establish the profession. Several studies have shown that the first years in the profession, is the most challenging time. Method: The intervention practitioner training nurse was initiated to empower, and support newly graduates nurses in their professional role. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with ten newly graduate nurses having experience of the intervention. The data were analysed using qualitative content analysis. Results: The analysis results in the overarching theme; “Organizational prerequisites” The theme consisted of three categories, "Activator" comprised the subcategories compiliating and attractive workplace. This involved that the practitioner training nurse were the activator creating a clear structure and the wards became more attractive workplaces. “Supportive nursing" comprised the subcategories present assistance, emotional support, and patient safety. This involved that practitioner training nurse constituted an important support function and helped to ensure patient safety. “Professional development” comprised the subcategories nurse's competence, feeling of security, and learning. This created the opportunity for professional development. Conclusion: The newly graduate nurses' experience of the intervention shows that the creation of an organisational structure enabled the practitioner training nurse to be an important support and to contribute to professional development. This was accomplished by strategic decision of the hospital management. Relevance to practice: The results of the current study can be transferred to other similar healthcare organizations and can be a support for managers who plan to initiate interventions to empower and support newly graduated nurses.

Abstract:
Background: The transition and retention of newly graduated nurses are worldwide problems. With the nursing shortage and 33-61% of newly graduated nurses leaving their job within the first year, newly graduated nurses need to be work ready. Work readiness of new nurses is a new concept developed in Australia. Significance: New nurses are a vulnerable population that is dependent upon experienced nurses for knowledge, skills, and socialization into the profession. However, new nurses often experience rudeness, humiliation and conflict influencing professional success, patient care, and retention. Purpose: To apply the Work Readiness Scale – Graduate Nurses (WRS-GN) to a population of Baccalaureate (BSN) and Master’s Entry into the Profession of Nursing (MEPN) graduates from a southwestern university and determine if there is a relationship between the variables of work readiness, individual experiences of graduates, and the two groups. Research questions included: 1) What is the relationship between work readiness (social intelligence, personal work characteristics, work competence, and organizational acumen) and individual experiences? 2) Do newly graduated BSN and MEPN degree nurses differ on the WRS-GN constructs of social intelligence, personal work characteristics, work competence, and organizational acumen? Method: Descriptive correlational study with a convenience sample of graduates from a southwestern university. Participants received a survey through their school email account and a message was placed on the Alumni Facebook page. Results: Thirty participants (9.2% response rate), 93.3% were female, and 76.7% work in Arizona. None of the participants were planning to leave the profession of nursing in the next year. A statistically significant relationship was detected between work competency and length of nurse residency (r=.44, p=0.02) and a negative relationship was detected between personal work characteristics and nurse residency (r=-.41, p=0.02). No relationship was detected between the two groups and constructs of work readiness. Implications/conclusions: Work readiness is complex. Longer nurse residency is associated with greater work competence. Academia and employers should collaborate and provide courses that enhance the work readiness of newly graduated nurses. The WRS-GN has been tested once in a population of Australian graduate nurses therefore further research is needed to validate the WRS-GN.

Abstract:
Background: Studies have demonstrated that new graduate nurses' (NGNs) transition experience is complex and often negative leading to dissatisfaction with nursing and increased attrition. Many existing studies of NGNs' transition experience are small, qualitative, concerned with NGNs experiences in the West. No study has been conducted to date examining NGNs' transition experience in any of the developing countries where the cultural context and nursing education and practice are different to those in the West. Aim: To explore the experience of NGNs during their transition period in one of the developing countries, the Sultanate of Oman. Method: Qualitative case study utilising an embedded-single case design was conducted to investigate the transition experience of baccalaureate NGNs graduating from Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) and working at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital (SQUH). Data were collected from the perspective of NGNs and also from the perspective of other key informants using triangulated methods. This includes individual and focus group interviews, observation and documentary analysis. Results: Four over-arching themes are identified from NGNs' transition experience in the Sultanate of Oman. These are 'Studying Experience'; 'Role Transition'; 'Working Conditions' and 'Status of the Nursing Profession'. This study showed that nursing is not an attractive choice for Omani students to study and pursue as a future career because of its low status. During the transition period, NGNs experienced reality shock which mainly resulted from a theory-practice gap. NGNs had limited practical experience but a high level of theoretical knowledge, which they were unable to utilise in practice. They found the working environment to involve many competing priorities resulting in task-orientation and compromised patient care. This study showed that many NGNs resented their involvement in basic nursing care, which they believed should not be part of their role as degree nurses. Despite the challenges of the transition period, many NGNs remarked that nurses play the most important role at the hospital and they are proud being nurses. Conclusion: Omani NGNs' transition experience is complex and similar in many respects to NGNs experience in the West. However, there are distinctive challenges Omani NGNs faced due to the Omani culture, working environment and the status of nursing in Oman.

Abstract:
The aims of this study was to investigate newly graduated nurses' experiences of their first professional year and if the nursing education provides enough preparation for the profession. Method: Eight newly graduated, registered nurses were interviewed about their experiences and the content was analyzed using a qualitative content analysis. Seven categories and 19 subcategories revealed. Results: The newly graduated, registered nurses were excited about their new profession, but also felt fear and concern about the great responsibility and demands of the nursing profession. The work was perceived as stressful and difficult but with the support and good treatment from colleagues and supervisors could simplify the work and the nurse could feel more confident. The education provided basic knowledge but the participants felt that the demands and the standards were too low. They felt that they lacked specific knowledge of the ward and for emergency care. Some courses could be considered too wide while others could be expanded. Conclusion: A better preparation and a good support for the newly graduated, registered nurses can ease the transition from student to professional nurse and thereby contribute to greater patient safety.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to explore newly graduated nurses experiences of their first year in practice and whether the education prepares them for their profession. Method: The study is performed with qualitative interviews containing seven interviews. The interviews have been analyzed by manifest content analysis. Result: The main result shows that the education has given the nurses a solid foundation, still it acquires a more thorough education in medical areas to achieve the standards that are required in the ward. It is also told that the scientific method and general care is given too much focus. There is also stated that the course in pedagogy should be reconstructed. The nurses is experiencing difficulties with lack of knowledge in medical areas as well as administrative tasks. They think that the best way to prepare for the nursing profession is to obtain as much clinical practice as possible why they are requesting more time on the ward during the education. The nurses are experiencing a very stressful first time in the profession, but they also think that the employment is very rewarding. Administrative tasks, local routines and to obtain a general picture of the patient´s medical and caring needs is perceived to be the most difficult parts of the profession. Conclusion: The newly graduated nurses experienced a positive anticipation, but also stress and worry about the new profession and responsibility. The education was considered to provide a basic knowledge of the profession. However, it was considered to be beneficial with a reconstruction of the nursing program to further achieve the requirements set for the newly graduated nurses.

There is a great shortage of nurses. Newly graduated nurses are a group at high risk of being burned out and up to every fifth nurse is considering leaving the profession within its first five years. Many of the newly graduated nurses feel unprepared for the nursing profession and several studies show the gap between theory and practice. Aim: Describing challenges the newly graduated nurse experiences during the first year of working. Method: The study has been conducted as a literature review. With the help of the search databases CINAHL and PubMed, a total of 20 articles form the base for the result. Result: Several factors are described by newly graduated nurses as challenges. This includes a theory-practice gap, the lack of support and mentoring, a lack of knowledge, poor work environment, staff shortages and an increasingly complex care with patients have multiple ilnesses who require an expertise that the newly graduated nurse cannot possibly possess. Conclusion: The challenges presented in the literature review's results are well-known and global problems, but also influential. The focus should be on both appointing new nurses but more importantly valuing the ones already employed/working. Newly graduated nurses need better support when they enter the workplace, much also indicates that the education should be looked over in order to match the reality and prepare the students for work life as well as possible.

Abstract:
Factors that a rapid development of care has changed the conditions for nursing have placed higher demands on the nurses' knowledge. It has been shown that students in semester six have lacked knowledge prior to their academic degree. Aim: The aim of the present study was to describe newly graduated nurses’ experiences during their first time in practice. Method: A literature study of descriptive design which was based on 13 scientific articles. Main result: The results of the articles gave five themes which were; to be prepared for their new professional role, supervision / introduction, relationships in the professional role, work environment and to grow into their professional role. The results showed that the transition from school to working life was experienced as difficult. They were unprepared for all responsibility and had a great need for support at first. Good relationships with colleagues provided security and favored development, while bad relationships were perceived as frightening. Workload and stress initially gave insecurity, which they eventually learned to deal with. Conclusion: The results showed that the transition from school to working life was difficult. Factors such as too little support, high workload and poor relationships with colleagues were negative for their development. Good support and guidance, positive relationships with colleagues gave them better experiences, which benefited their future development. If the experiences in this literature study are noticed, it can both generate more and better research in the field, but it can also be useful for managers and other experienced staff so that improvements can be made on site where there are shortcomings.

Abstract:
The aim of the study was to describe newly graduated nurses' experiences of work-related stress and to describe their experiences of what consequences stress can lead to. A descriptive interview study with qualitative approach was used. Data collection was performed by eight semi-structured interviews. The collected data was analyzed using qualitative manifest content analysis. The main result demonstrates that newly graduated nurses experienced stress in the beginning of their profession, partly because it is a time of uncertainty. Newly graduated nurses have described a decreased experience of stress with increased knowledge and experience, and reduced demands on herself in the professional role. Nursing is described to be stressful due to a variety of causes but there are measures that can be used to reduce stress. Stress has been described to cause consequences both for the nurse as an individual and for the care of patients, which has been described to result in feelings such as frustration and inadequacy. In line with Benner's theory it can be stated that newly graduated nurses undergo a professional development which lead to a experience of decreased stress. Stress in the nursing profession is a complex problem that must be dealt with on several fronts. For the newly graduated nurse it is very important that she is gentle with herself in the professional role by not having too high demands on herself to be able to practice her profession, that is carry out optimal patient-focused nursing.
