Abstract:
News articles generated by artificial intelligence rather than human reporters are referred to as automated journalism. This thesis explores how to create a trustworthy representation of news articles that mainly are generated by algorithmic decisions. The hypothesis of this thesis takes the background (characteristics of the underlying system design) and the foreground (millennials news consumption behaviour) contexts into consideration in order to provide an optimal approach for trustworthy representation of auto-generated articles. A theory about algorithmic transparency in the news media has been investigated to reveal information about the systems selection processes. The principles of glanceability and the heuristic principles are applied to proposed design solutions (interactive features). The outcomes show that newsreaders are positive towards a system that is trying to encourage them to fact-check the articles. Additionally, the outcomes also contributed to the understanding of how newsreaders can consume auto-generated news.

Dahl, Jonas. "Feature Selection for Sentiment Analysis of Swedish News Article Titles." Thesis, KTH, Skolan för elektroteknik och datavetenskap (EECS), 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-233534.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to elaborate the possibilities of sentiment analyzing Swedish news article titles using machine learning approaches and find how the text is best represented in such conditions. Sentiment analysis has traditionally been conducted by part-of-speech tagging and counting word polarities, which performs well for large domains and in absence of large sets of training data. For narrower domains and previously labeled data, supervised learning can be used. The work of this thesis tested the performance of a convolutional neural network and a Support Vector Machine on different sets of data. The data sets were constructed to represent various language features. This included for example a simple unigram bag-of-words model storing word counts, a bigram bag-of-words model to include the ordering of words and an integer vector summary of the title. The study concluded that each of the tested feature sets gave information about the sentiment to various extents. The neural network approach with all feature sets combined performed better than the two annotators of the study.

Full text
Abstract:
Characteristically, propagation of news on the Internet is a rather complex scenario. Its comprehensive understanding requires a consideration of diverse facets such as audience, problem domain, channel and type of news being propagated. My dissertation focuses on the understanding of propagation of a specific type of news- news articles, on a particular subset of the Internet, the social media. While a number of studies have looked into the phenomenon of propagation in social media, fewer of these have examined the propagation of content, specifically news articles, published by news provider websites. My dissertation presents a set of network theory based methodologies to extract and analyze various implicit propagation networks formed as a result of news article sharing on Twitter. These methodologies cover aspects related to users' article sharing behavior, influence of the news provider's social media accounts, role of followers and similarities between propagation networks of news providers. Furthermore, it also includes useful inferences derived about the news article propagation phenomenon by using a population sized data sampled from Twitter over a nine-month period. It expands on the inferences from my published works and the challenges identified in the area of news article consumption and distribution on the Internet. My dissertation intends to provide important guidelines for researchers and organizations studying social media related phenomena to derive insights about customer behavior. From the perspective of online news consumption and distribution, my study has important implications for the audience's preference of news content delivery. It also facilitates news providers to gauge their performance on social media and for news editors to help develop editorial policies tailored for an online consumer base. Finally, my dissertation presents an extensive set of network based models and methodologies that can enrich the applied network science discipline.

Lindgren, Jennifer. "Evaluating Hierarchical LDA Topic Models for Article Categorization." Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Institutionen för datavetenskap, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-167080.

Full text
Abstract:
With the vast amount of information available on the Internet today, helping users find relevant content has become a prioritized task in many software products that recommend news articles. One such product is Opera for Android, which has a news feed containing articles the user may be interested in. In order to easily determine what articles to recommend, they can be categorized by the topics they contain. One approach of categorizing articles is using Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing (NLP). A commonly used model is Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), which finds latent topics within large datasets of for example text articles. An extension of LDA is hierarchical Latent Dirichlet Allocation (hLDA) which is an hierarchical variant of LDA. In hLDA, the latent topics found among a set of articles are structured hierarchically in a tree. Each node represents a topic, and the levels represent different levels of abstraction in the topics. A further extension of hLDA is constrained hLDA, where a set of predefined, constrained topics are added to the tree. The constrained topics are extracted from the dataset by grouping highly correlated words. The idea of constrained hLDA is to improve the topic structure derived by a hLDA model by making the process semi-supervised. The aim of this thesis is to create a hLDA and a constrained hLDA model from a dataset of articles provided by Opera. The models should then be evaluated using the novel metric word frequency similarity, which is a measure of the similarity between the words representing the parent and child topics in a hierarchical topic model. The results show that word frequency similarity can be used to evaluate whether the topics in a parent-child topic pair are too similar, so that the child does not specify a subtopic of the parent. It can also be used to evaluate if the topics are too dissimilar, so that the topics seem unrelated and perhaps should not be connected in the hierarchy. The results also show that the two topic models created had comparable word frequency similarity scores. None of the models seemed to significantly outperform the other with regard to the metric.

Kallunki, K. (Kreetta). "Mundane images?:an exploratory case study analyzing the visual communication of one online news article." Bachelor's thesis, University of Oulu, 2018. http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:oulu-201801241106.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to present the analysis of the visual communication of one dis-informative, English online newspaper article, and compare the findings briefly with previous studies by Knox (2007; 2009). The study applied the qualitative, social semantic approach, utilizing the analytical tools adapted from Kress and van Leeuwen’s framework of visual grammar (2006). The research aim was to explore how visual elements are used in communicating dis-informative news content. The results show, among other things that in contrast with the narrative based text the images were thematic and presented in organized sequences. The finding suggests that the apparently mundane images have purposes other than supporting the narrative of the news story, interpretively that of supporting advertisement and enhancing credibility. The analysis also showed that, in contradiction to Knox’s previous findings, the reading path on an online newspaper page can be linear, and that the organization of the webpage can pertain to Ideal–Real and Given–New contrasts<br>Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli analysoida yhden englanninkielisen, harhaanjohtavan verkkouutisen visuaalista viestintää, sekä lyhyesti vertailla tuloksia Knoxin (2007; 2009) tutkimustuloksien kanssa. Tutkimuksella oli kvalitatiivinen, sosio-semanttinen lähestymistapa, jonka analyysimetodina hyödynnettiin Günther Kressin ja Theo van Leeuwenin (2006) visuaalista kielioppia. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli tarkastella, kuinka visuaalisia elementtejä on käytetty viestittäessä harhaanjohtavaa sisältöä. Tarkasteltaviksi elementeiksi valittiin artikkelin kymmenen kuvituskuvaa, sekä kokonaiskuva artikkelin asettelusta sivulla. Tutkimustulokset osoittivat muun muassa, että narratiivisen tekstin rinnalla kuvat olivat temaattisia sekä järjestetty sekvensseihin. Analyysin tulokset viittaavat siihen, ettei kuvien tarkoituksena ole tukea narratiivia tai tarjota uutiseen uutta sisältöä, vaan hyödyttää mainontaa ja kohentaa uutisen uskottavuutta. Lisäksi analyysi osoitti, vastoin Knoxin tutkimustuloksia, että verkkosivun luenta tapahtuu lineaarisesti, ja että sivun sisältö on järjestetty vastakohtaparien Given–New ja Ideal–Real mukaisesti

Full text
Abstract:
This study utilizes William Benoit’s Image Repair Theory to frame the dominant crisis communication strategies that fast food chain Chick-fil-A (CFA) employed before, during and after their CEO mixed his personal opinion on social issues with corporate policy in June 2012. The thematic analysis draws from three distinct data sets that include 3,900 Facebook comments posted by the general public on CFA’s social media page, 32 individual Atlanta Journal-Constitution news articles that address the debate and CFA’s public response to the crisis titled “Who We Are.” This thesis aims to identify both the dominant themes in Facebook posts and the news articles, as well as how these themes are situated within Benoit’s Image Repair Theory. Research shows that CFA representatives utilized eight of Benoit’s 14 strategies to address their CEO’s comments on gay marriage in an attempt to salvage their reputation. The transcendence strategy was used more than any other throughout the crisis. The thematic analysis of Facebook comments showed that religion and loyalty were the most addressed theme within social media users’ posts on the company’s page. Research also shows that a national boycott initiated against CFA by the LGBTQ community did not hurt the company, but may have helped to spur brand recognition and overall sales. Another pertinent question arose during this research; did company representatives purposely forgo sharing their 2011 and 2012 tax documents that prove they had already stopped contributing to supposed anti-gay organizations more than a year before the controversy arose? Was CFA benefiting from the crisis to such an extent that they strategically remained silent and allowed the misconception to take place when they could have ended the crisis and shown proof?

Abstract:
A prominent British newspaper and its website publishes an inflammatory article stating that a lifeboat charity has been cynically abused by migrant traffickers who are using it as a ‘free ferry service’ to get their cargo of human beings into the United Kingdom. What reaction is generated on the Twitter social media network? What narrative, language usage and sentiment is formed? How does the charity react? This thesis examines this case and discovers through word frequency and conversational analysis how one news story reverberated in 280 characters or less. Themes impacted by this research include Twitter as a social media network service, fake news, echo chambers and their bubbles, trust and audience perception, news media literacy, social campaigning and awareness, and crisis communication and news/stakeholder management. The conclusion reached is that the story had the potential to adversely affect the charity’s reputation and future income stream even though it was doing its duty because of its unwillingness or inability to engage with stakeholders and correct any misunderstandings. The thesis discusses why this was not a good idea and considers how the story could have developed into a broader, more damaging entity with relative ease, especially with the role social media can play for news consumers in today’s society.

Abstract:
AbstractThe generation and spread of fake news within new and online media sources is emerging as a phenomenon of high societal significance. Combating them using data-driven analytics has been attracting much recent scholarly interest. In this computational social science study, we analyze the textual coherence of fake news articles vis-a-vis legitimate ones. We develop three computational formulations of textual coherence drawing upon the state-of-the-art methods in natural language processing and data science. Two real-world datasets from widely different domains which have fake/legitimate article labellings are then analyzed with respect to textual coherence. We observe apparent differences in textual coherence across fake and legitimate news articles, with fake news articles consistently scoring lower on coherence as compared to legitimate news ones. While the relative coherence shortfall of fake news articles as compared to legitimate ones form the main observation from our study, we analyze several aspects of the differences and outline potential avenues of further inquiry.

Abstract:
In the article on the material of the Salzburg weekly «New Days» (1945–1947) various spheres of activity of Peter Volyniak are presented. It is noted that this edition was a business card of the publishing house of the same name and had a history of continuation: in Toronto Petro Volyniak restored the publishing house of the same name and continued the publication in the format of the universal monthly «New Days» (1950–1969). The article also presents periodicals («Latest News», «New Days», «Timpani», «Our Way») and literary, artistic and scientific collection «Steering Wheel», which were published in the Salzburg publishing house of Peter Volyniak «New Days». The purpose of the publication is to trace the path of Petro Volyniak from a writer to a literary critic, journalist and publisher. This trend is reproduced in chronological order. Peter Volyniak as a writer is informed in the article «Literary Evening of P. Volyniak» (author – M. Ch-ka). O. Satsyuk’s literary-critical article is devoted to the coverage of ideological and artistic aspects of Petro Volyniak’s collection «The Earth Calls» (Salzburg, 1947). Petro Volyniak as a literary critic is presented in an article devoted to a collection of literary tales by A. Kolomiyets (Salzburg, 1946), which was published by «New Days». Petro Volyniak as a journalist presents the essay «This is our song…». With the help of content analysis it was observed that the text is divided into two parts: the first contains the author’s reflections on the Ukrainian song, its role in the life of the Ukrainian people; in the second, main, Peter Okopny’s activity abroad is presented. The publisher Petro Volyniak in 1947 in a separate publication of the February issue of the weekly summarizes the third year of activity, providing statistics on the publication of periodicals, books, postcards, calendars, various small format materials. The analyzed material demonstrated the experience of combining creative work and commercial activity.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the analysis of the digital content of publications of one issue of the daily All-Ukrainian newspaper “Den” (March 13-14, 2020). The author aims to identify the main thematic groups of digital designations, as well as to consider cases of justified and unsuccessful use of digital designations. Applying the content analysis method, the author identifies publications that contain numerical notations, determines the number of such notations and their affiliation with the main subject groups. Finds that the thematic group of digital designations “time” (58.6% of all digital designations) is much more dominant. This indicates that timing is the most important task of a newspaper text. The second largest group of digital designations is “measure” (15.8% of all digital designations). It covers dimensions and proportions, measurements of distance, weight, volume, and more. The third largest group of digital signage is money (8.2% of all digital signage), the fourth is numbering (5.2% of all digital signage), and the fifth is people (4.4% of all digital signage). The author focuses on the fact that the digits of the journalist’s text are both a source of information and a catch for the reader. Vivid indicators give the text a sense of accuracy. When referring digital data to the text, journalists must adhere to certain rules for the writing of ordinal numbers with incremental graduation; submission of dates; pointing to unique integers that are combined (or not combined) with units of physical quantities, monetary units, etc.; writing a numerator at the beginning of a sentence; unified presentation of data. This will greatly facilitate the reader’s perception of the information.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the peculiarities of the media content shaping and transformation in the convergent dimension of cross-media, taking into account the possibilities of augmented reality. With the help of the principles of objectivity, complexity and reliability in scientific research, a number of general scientific and special methods are used: method of analysis, synthesis, generalization, method of monitoring, observation, problem-thematic, typological and discursive methods. According to the form of information presentation, such types of media content as visual, audio, verbal and combined are defined and characterized. The most important in journalism is verbal content, it is the one that carries the main information load. The dynamic development of converged media leads to the dominance of image and video content; the likelihood of increasing the secondary content of the text increases. Given the market situation, the effective information product is a combined content that combines text with images, spreadsheets with video, animation with infographics, etc. Increasing number of new media are using applications and website platforms to interact with recipients. To proceed, the peculiarities of the new content of new media with the involvement of augmented reality are determined. Examples of successful interactive communication between recipients, the leading news agencies and commercial structures are provided. The conditions for effective use of VR / AR-technologies in the media content of new media, the involvement of viewers in changing stories with augmented reality are determined. The so-called immersive effect with the use of VR / AR-technologies involves complete immersion, immersion of the interested audience in the essence of the event being relayed. This interaction can be achieved through different types of VR video interactivity. One of the most important results of using VR content is the spatio-temporal and emotional immersion of viewers in the plot. The recipient turns from an external observer into an internal one; but his constant participation requires that the user preferences are taken into account. Factors such as satisfaction, positive reinforcement, empathy, and value influence the choice of VR / AR content by viewers.
