AbstractNews automation is an emerging field within journalism, with the potential to transform newswork. Increasing access to data, combined with developing technology, will allow further inquiries into automated journalism. Producing news text using NLG (natural language generation) is currently largely undertaken in specific, predictable news domains, such as sports or finance. This interdisciplinary study investigates how elite media representatives from Finland, Europe and the US imagine the affordances of this emerging technology for their organization. Our analysis shows how the afforda

Abstract:
The use of automation in news content creation is expanding from the written to the audio-visual medium with news organizations including Reuters turning to video automation services provided by companies such as Wibbitz. Abstract:
The production of data-driven journalism is becoming increasingly automated, impacting its composition and comprehensibility. Given the importance of data-driven reporting for democratic participation, this study investigates, firstly, how readers evaluate the composition of data-driven articles produced with and without the help of automation and, secondly, how these evaluations affect readers’ perceptions of the articles’ comprehensibility. In an online survey experiment, 3135 online news consumers evaluated 24 articles produced with or without automation using criteria developed in prior re

Abstract:
Software studies is a research field that focuses on the social and cultural implications of the software. They are grounded by interdisciplinarity, borrowing to digital humanities, cultural studies, or new media studies. Their application domains are as heterogeneous as software can be, from interfaces to new digital mediatic forms. This paper examines the relevance of software studies for journalism studies in the context of automated news production, where technological artifacts can also be understood as being shaped by professional values and cultural practices. It also explores methods n
