Editor's reportAny report of this year's activity must begin with an acknowledgement of Bill Reese's central role. Every issue of 1995 has been put together by Bill, and several issues of next year will also bear his imprint. Over his seven years as editor, Bill Reese has set a high standard of editorial excellence. Under his leadership, the size of the Quarterly has increased markedly, as the number of articles, essay reviews, and book reviews has grown. In these same years, subscriptions and memberships have also increased steadily, which I take to be a measure of widespread approval of Bill's work. I am pleased that Bill will continue his affiliation with the Quarterly by serving as one of four associate editors.

Abstract:
New Zealand has had three women prime ministers, and the first country in the world to give women a vote, but there is still a gender gap in leadership in the traditionally staid arena of daily newspapers. One-third of the country’s daily newspapers have never had a female editor. The gender imbalance is significant in an industry that still breaks the majority of news items, and is influential in public information. The low ratio of women editors is incongruous with the fact the majority of journalism students are female, and a large number new hires are women. This longitudinal study has interviewed every woman who has held the position of editor, which totals only 15. The good news is that currently there are more women in editorships than ever before, the sad news is that this still represents only 29 percent of daily editors. The attitudinal interviews show the editors love the job, but quit after only a few short years, but this may be changing.

Abstract:
Online comments within news articles are a key way people share opinions. Discovering insightful comments can, however, be challenging for readers. A solution to this problem is using comment curation, whereby professional editors select the highest quality comments manually --- referred to as ''editor-picks''. This paper studies the growing use of professional editor-curation for user-generated comments. We focus on the New York Times as a case study, using a dataset covering 80k articles. We study the characteristics of editor-pick comments, highlighting how editor criteria vary across news sections (e.g. sports, entertainment). We find that editor-pick comments tend to be longer, more relevant to the article, positive in sentiment, and contain low toxicity. Our analysis further reveals that editors within different news sections exhibit differing criteria when they perform comment selection. Thus, we finally propose a set of models that can automatically identify good candidate editor-picks. Our ultimate goal is to reduce editor and journalistic workload, increasing productivity and the quality of curated comments.

Abstract:
News planning is the process of planning and managing all aspects of news production. It involves the steps an editor, reporter or editorial team takes to decide on the topic, story, sources, style and format to use in preparing the story. The goal of news planning is to ensure that news is presented in a way that is clear, accurate, balanced and attractive. The news agenda refers to the list of topics or issues that the media chooses to cover in a certain period of time. The focus of health news refers to the approach or point of view taken in preparing and covering health issues. Health news can cover a wide range of topics, from the latest medical developments, health policy issues, healthy lifestyles, medical research, pandemics, medicines, and more. This Community Service (PKM) was carried out by a combination of lecturers from two private universities (PTS), after observing the Covid-19 Pandemic and its impact on society. Held at the People's Editorial Office of New Makassar City, against journalists and editors. There were obstacles related to the busyness of the editors, but managed to provide an understanding of the importance of news in maintaining environmental health for the editors

Abstract:
This research discusses the editorial policy of Ujung Pandang Ekspress in presenting political news. This research aims to find out the editorial policy of Ujung Pandang Ekspres in presenting political news on online portals and knowing the stages in raising political news that will be published on online portals. This research adopts a qualitative research method, which involves collecting data in the form of detailed narratives from respondents. The sources of information in this research include the deputy director, chief editor, and editor. This research utilizes two types of data, namely primary and secondary data. The data collection process included observation as well as interviews. Data analysis was conducted through three main steps: data simplification, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the working mechanism of Ujung Pandang Ekspress (Upeks) Daily in determining political news to be published involves several stages, namely editorial meetings, coverage process, editing process. After the editing process is complete, the editor-in-chief has the authority to determine which political news will be published. Related to these three stages are editorial meetings, reporting, and editing. The editorial policy of Ujung Pandang Ekspreks in presenting political news on the online portal involves several important considerations to determine whether a political news is worth publishing. News eligibility is determined based on the value of the news. Before the news is published, the editor-in-chief holds a meeting involving editors and editors to decide which political news will be published and in the meeting, priority is given to news that is current, factual, and in accordance with the needs of readers.

Abstract:
This article systematizes the results of a study of the news releases of the Nizhni Novgorod branch of the VGTRK GTRK and analyzes which topics the editors of regional television focus on. Based on their own preferences, editors put their concerns at the beginning of the informational news block. This is how the place of these materials in the information space of Nizhni Novgorod region and beyond is determined. The study shows that most of the news stories presented at the beginning of the issue have a social nature. In most cases, topics came directly from the viewers. However, there are substantial differences in the structure of the news release, depending on the personality of the editor. This, among other things, affects the nature of the formation of the news agenda. On the one hand, it can be social and criminal, on the other – directly civil.

Twenty-two United Methodist Church (UMC) editors Q-sorted fifty-four news stories in this research study. The concourse was constructed using six news values mainly used by editors and reporters in the commercial news media: conflict, impact, magnitude, prominence, novelty, and proximity. The stories were sorted along an eleven point bi-polar continuum from "most important" to "least important"The study revealed that two kinds of editor perceptions emerged in the UMC: the denominational editors who selected news stories based on the proximity news element, and the ecumenical editor, who selected news stories based on the news elements of magnitude, impact, and novelty.Despite the use of these news values, the study also showed that the environmental factors such as organizational policies of the UMC and the bishops, influenced story selection for publication.<br>Department of Journalism

Abstract:
Fourteen Malawian news editors Q-sorted fifty-four stories under two situations: their real environment which is a developmental press system, and a hypothetical ideal situation emulating a western libertarian system. The Qconcourse was constructed using eighteen news value combinations developed by Water Ward through a 3x3x2 factorial design. The stories were sorted along an eleven point bi-polar continuum from "most likely to use" to "least likely to use."The study showed that in an ideal situation, all Malawian editors selected stories with conflict, known principal and impact. In their own situations, the editors split into two: Pro-government Editors who selected known principal, conflict and magnitude stories; and Privatelyowned Newspaper Editors who valued known principal and impact, followed by conflict and oddity. Despite the use of these news elements, the study showed that environmental factors in their own situations such as organizational policy and ownership also influenced story choices. Progovernment Editors would rather use a "normality" story, than use one with conflict, impact and known principal, but speaking ill of government.<br>Department of Journalism

Abstract:
This research project will examine whether the cultural training that news editors receive in their organisations affects their international news selection, and whether this ultimately affects international news reportage in Australia. The study is based on previous research focusing on three main areas of scholarship, drawn from a wider range of international theatres. These three bodies of work focus on: (1) factors affecting the selection, construction and presentation of international news; (2) how news editors and news directors function as gatekeepers of international news within newsrooms, and how they prioritise international news; and (3) whether cultural training occurs in Australian newsrooms, and if so, how it influences the gatekeeper’s news selection process, and through it, world news coverage in the Australian news media. This study partially replicated research completed by Australian media scholar Peter Putnis in 1996 (Putnis 1996), and extended it to three Brisbane news bulletins: a commercial television bulletin, a public radio news bulletin, and a commercial online portal. The data obtained from the news bulletins were gathered during a constructed week to analyse whether the selection and framing around the presentation of international news in Australia had changed since Putnis’ seminal work. In addition to the aforementioned qualitative analysis of media content, a number of news editors and media experts across Australia were interviewed to determine their self-perception of gatekeeping responsibilities; and assess their degree of agency as gatekeepers in conjunction with institutional news priorities and directions. Within this framework, the gatekeepers were asked how important cultural training was for them and how they believed such training changed the reporting outcomes. These interviews were then used to develop a radio documentary that was broadcast on the national community radio network. Using these interviews as both data for qualitative research and source content for a media production demonstrates how such information-gathering methodologies are shared and used in both journalism studies research and journalism production. The argument proposed in this study is that international news is not prioritised in Australian journalism; and that a lack of world news coverage persists because Australian news editors believe international news is not important to their audiences —even though Australia is a multicultural country. It then argues, based on interviews with news editors and news directors, that cultural training is needed to create awareness about events happening outside Australia. These research aims are demonstrated through both the series of radio documentaries, and the exegetical component of this work.<br>Thesis (PhD Doctorate)<br>Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)<br>School of Hum, Lang & Soc Sc<br>Arts, Education and Law<br>Full Text

Griffiths, Nikki. "Factors affecting the decision making of news editors in South Africa." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/23743.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this exploratory study is to gain an understanding of the factors which influence the decision making of news editors in South Africa. The independent news media is an important source of information in modern society. It has a significant influence on people’s perceptions of the political and social issues facing a society. However it is not a neutral institution as it is a commercial business driven by profit. Within news organisations, editors are key decision makers as they decide how resources are allocated and which stories enter the public domain. The decisions taken by editors are immediately open to public scrutiny and often impact a range of stakeholders in society. In this study an exploratory phenomenological approach was used, as this approach seeks to capture the meaning of an experience through an examination of an individual’s lived experiences. To achieve this, twelve, in-depth interviews were conducted with editors, with over 85 years of editorial experience, in order to establish which factors influence their decision making process. The data was analysed using content and frequency analysis. The main factors which the editors identified as influencing their decision making process when evaluating a story included the following: the relevance to the audience, accuracy, the public interest, newsworthiness and entertainment value. In difficult editorial decisions which involved a trade-off between two or more important factors, the editors showed a strong commitment to the journalistic values of acting in the public interest and newsworthiness. Consultation, knowledge and personal attributes emerged as important competencies in ensuring good editorial decisions. Abstract:
A study was conducted to determine what attitudes Indiana religion editors and reporters hold toward religion news and what attitude patterns exist among them.Using Q Methodology, this study explored the attitudes of religion reporters and editors at 22 Indiana daily newspapers. Newspapers included in the study had a religion reporter or editor who covered local religion news. The concourse for the study was developed by using statements from Ranly's 1977 study and from articles from trade and scholarly journals. The Q-sample included a total of 54 statements related to personal religious beliefs, the state of religion news and working as a journalist. The subjects completed a questionnaire, which included questions about their professional and religious background, and interviews were conducted with the subjects. The typical Indiana religion reporter was: a Caucasian female who had worked as a journalist for less than 10 years, who had held the position of religion reporter for less than five years, who held a bachelor's degree in journalism or English, and who had at least one college religion course. She had exposure to religion while growing up, is now involved in religious activities, and attends church weekly.QMETHOD software was used to tabulate the Q-sorts, and the investigator determined that two factors could be drawn out from the results. Hypothetical reporter types were labeled as "moderate" and "traditional." There was a high correlation between the two factors. Moderates were more news-oriented in their approach. They believe that religion news should be covered like any other news topic. Traditionalists were more faith-oriented. They believe that their faith and their jobs are not conflicting.<br>Department of Journalism

Abstract:
The present study examined the role of the Korean ethnic press in Australia with special reference to the ways in which their professional backgrounds shaped the construction of the news content of their newspapers. The study sample consisted of six Korean ethnic newspapers produced in Sydney. Both intrinsic and extrinsic factors relevant to the role of journalists were identified in interviews with the editors and publishers. The overall news content was analyzed through quantitative and qualitative content analysis. The principal finding of this study was that none of Shoemaker's (1987) theoretical statements about how economic factors shape news content could be applied to the Korean ethnic press in Australia. Despite their reliance on commercial sources for their economic survival, all six papers devoted more space to issue oriented news than to event-oriented news, and were not responsive to their readers and advertisers in Shoemaker's terms. Journalistic professionalism as discussed by Henningham (1989) also was treated as a less important factor by Korean ethnic newspaper staff. Rather the professional identity of the ethnic press editors and publishers was grounded in the culture of their local community instead of in the mainstream standards of It is concluded that Korean ethnic newspapers in Australia have more pragmatic criteria both for the selection of their news content, and for the professional standards of their newspaper staff.

Abstract:
AbstractIt is easy to forget that, historically, hybridity has always been a part of journalism (Hamilton, 2016). For example, ethnographer and sociologist Gaye Tuchman (1978) first engaged with the ‘hybrid’ context of the television newsroom in the 1970s, unpacking its use of sound, moving images, still images, and lighting in relation to the traditional newspaper newsroom, which she had studied for her 1969 dissertation research. That ten-year production study relied upon the direct observation of news workers, editors, and their workplaces and led her to the powerful conclusion that journalism was in fact socially constructed or ‘made’ (Tuchman, 1969). She would develop her thinking about the news across media in her book Making news: A study of the construction of reality in 1978. Her work remains a model of scholarly engagement with journalism and its various platforms and practices even today.

Abstract:
Editorial criteria in critical editions of Shakespeare’s plays have evolved from a 18th-century arbitrary eclecticism into one restricted by the editor’s knowledge of the nature and transmission of the early texts, a knowledge developed by the 20th-century New Bibliography that specially informs paleographical and bibliographical criteria. Roughly from the 21st century, these criteria have evolved into a conservatism influenced by a social view of texts, which stands on a par with the primordial criterion of reconstructing the text intended by the author. This textualism is nourished by a skepticism about the certainty the New Bibliography inspired in what editors know about the texts’ transmission.

Abstract:
Journalism is not a perfect art, a perfect form. News editors are faced everyday with myriad stories. They have to make instant judgements, important stories fall by the wayside and are ignored. Many other things operate to take our interest, which is in Palestine and Israel, out of focus for a while. But the main point I want to make is that when the story is covered, as it is from time to time now, and as it used to be more consistently, it should be covered properly. And my case is that over the past 20 years now, the BBC particularly, but the other broadcast media as well, and to some extent, newspapers which had been sympathetic to the Palestinian cause or Palestinian legitimate aspirations for equal rights, have not done the job properly. As to the BBC, I say this not because I am anti-BBC, and not because I’m a resentful ex-employee. I still admire the BBC. And I think the institution should remain. But it does not do the Israel/Palestine job properly. It listens to the voices of government and it takes into account the voices of pressure groups instead of listening to public opinion, which as we know, steadily over the past 25 years or so, has moved away from open support of Israel and taken, especially in Britain and in Western Europe, the Palestinian cause seriously.

AbstractIn this piece, I reflect upon my own writing journey, from being a reporter, a translator, and a researcher in the newsroom, to writing for a global audience about my country. Journalistic storytelling is impartial, often done with an emotional distance from the subjects caught up in a news event. During my journalism days, I was surrounded by exceptional writers and editors. It was, however, in Canada where my real writer identity was born. Through word building and writing of a different kind, I seek to understand my own place in a country I hope to one day call home.

Spurred on by new editions of works of modern literature in which manuscript materials are often extant, editorial theory since the 1980s has been laying the groundwork for the wider introduction of a genetic perspective on the works of Anglophone authors. Resistance to the idea from the 1940s is traced. The editing of writers’ journals during the 1970s–1990s shows a hesitation to follow the brave lead of the Harvard edition of Emerson’s Journals in recording in-text cancellations and additions. Editors’ conceptions of the reader of their editions have evolved since 1950. The advent of the Cornell Wordsworth and Cornell Yeats editions broadened understanding of the editorial-archival function; the method has become accepted as the base-line responsibility of digital editors.

Abstract This paper updates previous editions of "The Paint and Coatings Cost and Selection Guide"1 published by the authors biennially through NACE since 1979. The Guide is designed to help coatings engineers, specifiers, and users to: (1) identify suitable paint and protective coating systems for specific industrial environments; (2) calculate current approximate installed costs and estimated service life for each; and (3) determine the most cost-effective systems, including economic justification. Costs for both new construction and maintenance painting are supplied, including typical maintenance repainting sequences and their composition. The effect of maintenance sequences on long-term costs and system performance are reviewed.

Abstract:
Cultural journalism is a sub-field of journalism characterized by specific knowledge and education required from the journalists working as both reporters and reviewers and often close interaction with arts and cultural industries. The importance of cultural journalism lies in its role of providing for society a self-reflective discourse describing values and modeling patterns of behaviour and thought through journalistic practices such as reporting and reviewing on everyday culture and arts. However, the role of cultural journalism in the context of contemporary media environment is deminishing. This pushes for finding of new models of work in this field that at the same time puts under question professional identity of those working in cultural journalism. Until now cultural journalism is an underresearched domain in journalism studies, especially, from the media management and economics as well as work organisations/conditions point of view. This paper contributes to the reseatch on the roles and identity of cultural journalism focusing on exactly these aspects of journalistic practice. The purpose of this paper is to explore flexible working models in the field of cultural media in Latvia in connection with reflection of professional role and corporate identity. To achieve this, 12 in depth interviews were conducted with editors and journalists of Latvian media companies. The findings show that professionals interviewed see the goal of their professional activity broader, often combining their role in journalism with other roles in the field of culture. They can more or less be aware of their professional identity as journalists, tend to experiment deliberately with working schemes, but mostly recognize their corporate identity.

Abstract:
Accuracy is one of the basic principles of journalism. However, it is increasingly hard to manage due to the diversity of news media. Some editors of online news tend to use catchy headlines which trick readers into clicking. These headlines are either ambiguous or misleading, degrading the reading experience of the audience. Thus, identifying inaccurate news headlines is a task worth studying. Previous work names these headlines ``clickbaits'' and mainly focus on the features extracted from the headlines, which limits the performance since the consistency between headlines and news bodies is underappreciated. In this paper, we clearly redefine the problem and identify ambiguous and misleading headlines separately. We utilize class sequential rules to exploit structure information when detecting ambiguous headlines. For the identification of misleading headlines, we extract features based on the congruence between headlines and bodies. To make use of the large unlabeled data set, we apply a co-training method and gain an increase in performance. The experiment results show the effectiveness of our methods. Then we use our classifiers to detect inaccurate headlines crawled from different sources and conduct a data analysis.

Abstract:
With the purpose of attracting clicks, online news publishers and editors use diverse strategies to make their headlines catchy, with a sacrifice of accuracy. Specifically, a considerable portion of news headlines is ambiguous. Such headlines are unclear relative to the content of the story, and largely degrade the reading experience of the audience. In this paper, we focus on dealing with the information gap caused by the ambiguous news headlines. We define a new task of explaining ambiguous headlines with short informative texts, and build a benchmark dataset for evaluation. We address the task by selecting a proper sentence from the news body to resolve the ambiguity in an ambiguous headline. Both feature engineering methods and neural network methods are explored. For feature engineering, we improve a standard SVM classifier with elaborately designed features. For neural networks, we propose an ambiguity-aware neural matching model based on a previous model. Utilizing automatic and manual evaluation metrics, we demonstrate the efficacy and the complementarity of the two methods, and the ambiguity-aware neural matching model achieves the state-of-the-art performance on this challenging task.

Abstract:
In our current era of disinformation, ready access to trustworthy sources is critical. “Fake news,” sophisticated disinformation campaigns, and propaganda distort the common reality, polarize communities, and threaten open democratic systems. What citizens, journalists, and policymakers need is a canonical source of trusted information. For millions, that trusted source resides in the books and journals housed in libraries, curated and vetted by librarians. Yet today, as we turn inevitably to our screens for information, if a book isn’t digital, it is as if it doesn’t exist. To address this gap, the Internet Archive is actively working with the world’s great libraries to digitize their collections and to make them available to users via controlled digital lending, a process whereby libraries can loan digital copies of the print books on their shelves. By bringing millions of missing books and academic literature online, libraries can empower journalists, researchers, and Wikipedia editors to cite the best sources directly in their work, grounding readers in the vetted, published record, and extending the investment that libraries have made in their print collections.

Abstract:
Competing newspapers, after all, tend to publish the same information in agiven time frame. However, each editor tends to aggregate and present thenews according to certain criteria such as editorial policies, filteringstrategies, readers base, etc. Thus, the proper choice and filtering ofinformation makes one newspaper different from the other and, the propermanagement of such criteria, may deem the success or failure of a newspaper. From the editor’s perspective, the news selection process is a trade-offbetween informativeness and attractiveness, as determined by the readership.Could there be an optimal balance between these two conflicting forces? Moreover, is it possible that cultural and political inputs from social mediamay impact the news selection process?Political news on social networks represent nowadays a valuable informativeasset that gives the possibility to correlate newspaper information with publicrequest expressed on social networks. We believe that it is possible to developa theory to mitigate the newspaper’s cultural identity with the publicinformation needs collected on social media. In our work, we show how to measure the society request for information, andhow this can be conveyed.

Abstract:
The University of Rhode Island (URI) University Libraries publishes five active open access, peer-reviewed scholarly journals on our DigitalCommons@URI platform. Our journal publishing program has grown slowly but steadily over the last decade, with new services added incrementally as needed. In early 2019, we conducted three focus group interviews with nine editors and assistants representing all of the journals on our platform in order to assess our journal publishing efforts. We asked editors to identify the successes, challenges, and unmet needs that they have encountered in the publishing process and what resources they have found to support their journals outside of library offerings. We highlight what we learned from our editors: what they value, what they need, and what they want from library publishing services. We also outline our plans going forward to facilitate ongoing conversations among editors and to find creative solutions to help them with their biggest challenges.

Abstract:
Disinformation, the deliberate spread of false or misleading information, has become an increasingly pressing issue in today’s society. The media industry, which plays a critical role in providing reliable and accurate information to the public, has been significantly impacted by the rise of disinformation. This IBERIFIER Report provides an analysis of the effects of disinformation on the media industry and the challenges it poses for journalists, media organizations, and the public. It highlights the erosion of public trust in the media, the need for journalists to verify information more rigorously, and the creation of a market for sensationalist and biased news. The researchers from IBERIFIER surveyed the Spanish and Portuguese population to analyze their response to disinformation and misinformation, their trust in media outlets, and their perception of media verification procedures. Data shows that both countries had high trust in health institutions, and both achieved high rates of complete vaccination among all population groups, especially the elderly and most vulnerable. Respondents from both countries trusted researchers, scientists, and experts the most, followed by journalists and doctors. However, respondents in Spain were skeptical about media paywalls and whether they prevented the dissemination of fake news. In Portugal, respondents showed a higher concern for disinformation in politics than among family members, colleagues, or friends. The survey analysis in Spain showed that gender influenced the loss of trust in media outlets that publish fake news, while the degree of trust in the media depended on the political party they voted for in the last elections. Media editors in both countries confirmed the importance of verification procedures, although there were differences in their approach. The report also suggests several solutions to combat disinformation, such as investing in media literacy programs, regulating online sources of disinformation, and promoting transparency and accuracy in reporting. By reading the report, policymakers, media organizations, and the general public can gain a better understanding of the effects of disinformation on the media industry in Spain and Portugal and the steps that can be taken to address this growing problem.

Measuring the Political Economy of Tax Lawmaking: A Methodology and Evidence from Argentina. Inter-American Development Bank, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0011521.

Abstract:
Although recent research has shed new light on the political determinants and economic consequences of tax lawmaking, existing analyses rely on coarse data measuring political aggregates. Consequently, little is known about the political processes determining how tax legislation is written or their effect on the nature of tax reforms. This paper therefore develops a methodology to examine how Congress edits the content of tax legislation by measuring the ways Deputies, Senators, Presidents, and Ministers propose and amend such legislation. The Legislative Substance Scale proposed here measures the distance between a bill's original position and the actual outcome of the legislative process by comparing the differences in content according to coding of the main tax policy dimensions. The scale is used to build the first systematic database of tax lawmaking in Argentina, and to describe its general patterns of authorship, approval and substantive content across presidencies in the current democratic period.
