Mudambanuki, Weston T. "News values of United Methodist Church editors." Virtual Press, 2003. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1259754.

Abstract:
Twenty-two United Methodist Church (UMC) editors Q-sorted fifty-four news stories in this research study. The concourse was constructed using six news values mainly used by editors and reporters in the commercial news media: conflict, impact, magnitude, prominence, novelty, and proximity. The stories were sorted along an eleven point bi-polar continuum from "most important" to "least important"The study revealed that two kinds of editor perceptions emerged in the UMC: the denominational editors who selected news stories based on the proximity news element, and the ecumenical editor, who selected news stories based on the news elements of magnitude, impact, and novelty.Despite the use of these news values, the study also showed that the environmental factors such as organizational policies of the UMC and the bishops, influenced story selection for publication.<br>Department of Journalism

Abstract:
Fourteen Malawian news editors Q-sorted fifty-four stories under two situations: their real environment which is a developmental press system, and a hypothetical ideal situation emulating a western libertarian system. The Qconcourse was constructed using eighteen news value combinations developed by Water Ward through a 3x3x2 factorial design. The stories were sorted along an eleven point bi-polar continuum from "most likely to use" to "least likely to use."The study showed that in an ideal situation, all Malawian editors selected stories with conflict, known principal and impact. In their own situations, the editors split into two: Pro-government Editors who selected known principal, conflict and magnitude stories; and Privatelyowned Newspaper Editors who valued known principal and impact, followed by conflict and oddity. Despite the use of these news elements, the study showed that environmental factors in their own situations such as organizational policy and ownership also influenced story choices. Progovernment Editors would rather use a "normality" story, than use one with conflict, impact and known principal, but speaking ill of government.<br>Department of Journalism

Jordan, Perez Eduardo Roberto. "Australian Foreign News Coverage in the Global News Environment." Thesis, Griffith University, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/376517.

Full text
Abstract:
This research project will examine whether the cultural training that news editors receive in their organisations affects their international news selection, and whether this ultimately affects international news reportage in Australia. The study is based on previous research focusing on three main areas of scholarship, drawn from a wider range of international theatres. These three bodies of work focus on: (1) factors affecting the selection, construction and presentation of international news; (2) how news editors and news directors function as gatekeepers of international news within newsrooms, and how they prioritise international news; and (3) whether cultural training occurs in Australian newsrooms, and if so, how it influences the gatekeeper’s news selection process, and through it, world news coverage in the Australian news media. This study partially replicated research completed by Australian media scholar Peter Putnis in 1996 (Putnis 1996), and extended it to three Brisbane news bulletins: a commercial television bulletin, a public radio news bulletin, and a commercial online portal. The data obtained from the news bulletins were gathered during a constructed week to analyse whether the selection and framing around the presentation of international news in Australia had changed since Putnis’ seminal work. In addition to the aforementioned qualitative analysis of media content, a number of news editors and media experts across Australia were interviewed to determine their self-perception of gatekeeping responsibilities; and assess their degree of agency as gatekeepers in conjunction with institutional news priorities and directions. Within this framework, the gatekeepers were asked how important cultural training was for them and how they believed such training changed the reporting outcomes. These interviews were then used to develop a radio documentary that was broadcast on the national community radio network. Using these interviews as both data for qualitative research and source content for a media production demonstrates how such information-gathering methodologies are shared and used in both journalism studies research and journalism production. The argument proposed in this study is that international news is not prioritised in Australian journalism; and that a lack of world news coverage persists because Australian news editors believe international news is not important to their audiences —even though Australia is a multicultural country. It then argues, based on interviews with news editors and news directors, that cultural training is needed to create awareness about events happening outside Australia. These research aims are demonstrated through both the series of radio documentaries, and the exegetical component of this work.<br>Thesis (PhD Doctorate)<br>Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)<br>School of Hum, Lang & Soc Sc<br>Arts, Education and Law<br>Full Text

Griffiths, Nikki. "Factors affecting the decision making of news editors in South Africa." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/23743.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this exploratory study is to gain an understanding of the factors which influence the decision making of news editors in South Africa. The independent news media is an important source of information in modern society. It has a significant influence on people’s perceptions of the political and social issues facing a society. However it is not a neutral institution as it is a commercial business driven by profit. Within news organisations, editors are key decision makers as they decide how resources are allocated and which stories enter the public domain. The decisions taken by editors are immediately open to public scrutiny and often impact a range of stakeholders in society. In this study an exploratory phenomenological approach was used, as this approach seeks to capture the meaning of an experience through an examination of an individual’s lived experiences. To achieve this, twelve, in-depth interviews were conducted with editors, with over 85 years of editorial experience, in order to establish which factors influence their decision making process. The data was analysed using content and frequency analysis. The main factors which the editors identified as influencing their decision making process when evaluating a story included the following: the relevance to the audience, accuracy, the public interest, newsworthiness and entertainment value. In difficult editorial decisions which involved a trade-off between two or more important factors, the editors showed a strong commitment to the journalistic values of acting in the public interest and newsworthiness. Consultation, knowledge and personal attributes emerged as important competencies in ensuring good editorial decisions. Gunter, Heather M. "A Q study of Indiana religion editors' attitudes toward religion news." Virtual Press, 2000. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1177975.

Full text
Abstract:
A study was conducted to determine what attitudes Indiana religion editors and reporters hold toward religion news and what attitude patterns exist among them.Using Q Methodology, this study explored the attitudes of religion reporters and editors at 22 Indiana daily newspapers. Newspapers included in the study had a religion reporter or editor who covered local religion news. The concourse for the study was developed by using statements from Ranly's 1977 study and from articles from trade and scholarly journals. The Q-sample included a total of 54 statements related to personal religious beliefs, the state of religion news and working as a journalist. The subjects completed a questionnaire, which included questions about their professional and religious background, and interviews were conducted with the subjects. The typical Indiana religion reporter was: a Caucasian female who had worked as a journalist for less than 10 years, who had held the position of religion reporter for less than five years, who held a bachelor's degree in journalism or English, and who had at least one college religion course. She had exposure to religion while growing up, is now involved in religious activities, and attends church weekly.QMETHOD software was used to tabulate the Q-sorts, and the investigator determined that two factors could be drawn out from the results. Hypothetical reporter types were labeled as "moderate" and "traditional." There was a high correlation between the two factors. Moderates were more news-oriented in their approach. They believe that religion news should be covered like any other news topic. Traditionalists were more faith-oriented. They believe that their faith and their jobs are not conflicting.<br>Department of Journalism

Kwak, Ki-Sung, and n/a. "Aspects of the Korean ethnic press in Australia 1985-1990 : an analysis of the backgrounds of editors and publishers and news content." University of Canberra. Communication, 1991. http://erl.canberra.edu.au./public/adt-AUC20060815.103805.

Full text
Abstract:
The present study examined the role of the Korean ethnic press in Australia with special reference to the ways in which their professional backgrounds shaped the construction of the news content of their newspapers. The study sample consisted of six Korean ethnic newspapers produced in Sydney. Both intrinsic and extrinsic factors relevant to the role of journalists were identified in interviews with the editors and publishers. The overall news content was analyzed through quantitative and qualitative content analysis. The principal finding of this study was that none of Shoemaker's (1987) theoretical statements about how economic factors shape news content could be applied to the Korean ethnic press in Australia. Despite their reliance on commercial sources for their economic survival, all six papers devoted more space to issue oriented news than to event-oriented news, and were not responsive to their readers and advertisers in Shoemaker's terms. Journalistic professionalism as discussed by Henningham (1989) also was treated as a less important factor by Korean ethnic newspaper staff. Rather the professional identity of the ethnic press editors and publishers was grounded in the culture of their local community instead of in the mainstream standards of It is concluded that Korean ethnic newspapers in Australia have more pragmatic criteria both for the selection of their news content, and for the professional standards of their newspaper staff.

Hasman, Gregory R. C. "Amarillo Globe-News: How Did Gene Howe and the Globe-News Help Guide Amarillo, Texas through the Dust Bowl and Great Depression?" Thesis, University of North Texas, 2015. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc799498/.

Full text
Abstract:
For many years newspapers were locally owned by editors and publishers. However, today many are run by corporations from out of state. As a result, many communities have lost the personal relationship between the family owned publication and the community. Gene Howe, who served as editor, publisher and columnist of the Amarillo Globe-News from 1926 until his death in 1952, believed the community was where the focus should be and the newspaper should do all that it can to help their readers. Despite the fact that Howe was not born in Amarillo, Texas, his passion and love for the city and its inhabitants compensated for it. During the Dust Bowl and Great Depression Howe and the Globe-News helped Amarillo survive the dust and economic storms that blew through the Texas Panhandle, an area that has not been written as much as other parts of Texas. Through his “Tactless Texan” column, which served as a pulpit to the community, to the various contests and promotions the newspaper sprang up, including the creation of Mother in Law Day, Gene Howe gave the newspaper another dimension little has been studied about, the role of the editor and publisher in guiding a community through a dramatic era. Understanding Howe’s ethos can allow others to examine the roles editors and newspapers play in communities throughout the country.

Hughes, Angela Farnell. "The impact of spin on Australian real estate journalism : a Queensland study." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2009. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/32173/1/Angela_Hughes_Thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Regardless of ‘bear’ or ‘bull’ markets, the great Australian dream remains to own your own home. Central to this dream of home ownership is unflagging interest in the property market, reflected in bulging real estate news sections of newspapers in South East Queensland, the focus area for this thesis research. While there has been much scholarly research into other areas of public relations spin and its impact on news-gathering processes, there appears to be next to no research on real estate spin, how it is prepared and by whom, and journalism’s attitude to and the managing of the spin. Real estate spin remains an under-researched topic requiring further investigation not only in South East Queensland but Australia-wide given the ‘big bucks’ allotted to the promotion of real estate and the income it generates for news media outlets, particularly newspapers. This thesis examines the influence of public relations practitioners and journalists specialising in real estate spin through interviews, content analysis, and how real estate spin envelopes itself in today’s society. From content analyses and observations of journalism in the real estate rounds of the two major newspapers in South East Queensland, I found that journalists were using massive quantities of real estate spin supplied by PR practitioners and other associated industry sources. This spin is supplanting investigative newsroom journalism, thus allowing newspapers to operate with minimal staffing levels yet still able to publish large weekly real estate news sections. My research also revealed growing commercialisation of real estate news through increasing outsourcing of journalistic work to a writing bureau, which could jeopardise both the professions of journalism and public relations in the future.

Abstract:
News companies have a need to automate and make the editors process of writing about hot and new events more effective. Current technologies involve robotic programs that fills in values in templates and website listeners that notifies the editors when changes are made so that the editor can read up on the source change at the actual website. Editors can provide news faster and better if directly provided with abstracts of the external sources. This study applies deep learning algorithms to automatically formulate abstracts and tag sources with appropriate tags based on the context. The study is a full stack solution, which manages both the editors need for speed and the training, testing and validation of the algorithms. Decision Tree, Random Forest, Multi Layer Perceptron and phrase document vectors are used to evaluate the categorisation and Recurrent Neural Networks is used to paraphrase unformatted texts. In the evaluation a comparison between different models trained by the algorithms with a variation of parameters are done based on the F-score. The results shows that the F-scores are increasing the more document the training has and decreasing the more categories the algorithm needs to consider. The Multi-Layer Perceptron perform best followed by Random Forest and finally Decision Tree. The document length matters, when larger documents are considered during training the score is increasing considerably. A user survey about the paraphrase algorithms shows the paraphrase result is insufficient to satisfy editors need. It confirms a need for more memory to conduct longer experiments.

Donoho, Stephen Halley. ""[A] humbled China will be more open to receive the salvation of Jesus Christ!" : two church periodicals' views on the Cing-Japanese war and Japanese-Táiwanese war." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/31432.

Full text
Abstract:
There is writing about how nineteenth-century churchgoers' views of other countries were formed by church periodicals. And there is writing about how opinions of the Cing and Japanese Empires were changed by the 'Cing-Japanese War of 1894-1895' ('First Sino-Japanese War'; 'Jiá-wǔ War'), and the 'Japanese-Táiwanese War of 1895'. But, there are no works making connections between these bodies of writing. This work makes such a connection through a comparison of writing about the wars in two church periodicals, the England-based Monthly Messenger and Gospel in China , and the Táiwan-based 'Dāi-lám Church News' ('Dāi-lám Hu-siá n Gào-ho ê -b e'). It makes the argument that the periodicals' writers and editors were on the side of the Japanese, as it seemed to them that Japanese success against the Cing Empire, and Japanese rule in Tái-wan, would make Western ways commoner in these places, which would be good for the Protestant Churches there. But the writers and editors had to give their opinions differently, as their readers were in different positions with respect to the wars. The Monthly Messenger's readers were in England; nothing the writers said about the war would make them any less safe, and so in both wars the periodical gave its support to the Japanese loudly and frequently. But the Church News' readers and writers were in Tái-wan. Openly supporting an attacking country could put them in danger, so the writers said nothing for or against any side in the first war, and were but quietly against the Táiwanese Republic in the second.

Wheeler, Belinda. "EXPANSIVE MODERNISM: FEMALE EDITORS, LITTLE MAGAZINES, AND NEW BOOK HISTORIES." OpenSIUC, 2011. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/dissertations/411.

Full text
Abstract:
The resurgence of modern periodical studies has expanded our understanding of “littleqrdquo; magazines and the editors behind them, but many studies continue to be restricted to the 1920s, examine male editors, and focus on well–established literary journals, rather than the subversive magazines that expanded the reign of modernism in the years from 1910 to 1950. These studies, though fascinating, privilege a select few and leave many lost to the archive. The new theory of book history and those who evaluate the book as a material object that is designed to circulate among a range of publics provide powerful and useful frameworks for recognizing the significance of what had previously been considered mere data. This study focuses on several neglected female little magazine editors who, despite various obstacles, powerfully intervened in the modernism debates throughout the 1910s through to the late 1940s by shaping successful publications to invite public appreciation of values they espoused. Unlike canonical modernist figures such as Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot who championed an elite style of modernism that was usually inaccessible to most, Lola Ridge, Gwendolyn Bennett, Caresse Crosby, and Kay Boyle encouraged diversity and fostered heterogeneity by selecting and juxtaposing material by new writers and artists who moved easily around and over the borders separating high art and mass culture, who recovered marginalized voices from history, and who appealed for social justice. Further, their traditional and non–traditional roles while they served as editors show that in many cases being an editor meant more than just choosing works and arranging them. One chapter is devoted to Lola Ridge, the American literary editor of Broom (1922-1923). Ridge was a cosmopolitan modernist who welcomed a broad audience to Broom and invited readers to champion styles of writing and artwork that contained strong social commentary with American subjects, instead of copying European models that many argued were created for art's sake. Another chapter focuses on African American poet, graphic artist and literary columnist, Gwendolyn Bennett, who held several editorial roles at Opportunity, Fire!!, and Black Opals, from the mid–1920s until the early 1930s. A heterodox modernist, Bennett skillfully discussed and placed artistic work by members of the New Negro movement next to the work by their forefathers, subsequently fostering congeniality between the two conflicting literary groups and promoting a united front during the development of the Harlem Renaissance. She also promoted co–operation between black and white artists and writers with her universally themed poetry, graphic art, and literary column. Chapter four centers on Black Sun Press book publisher, novelist, and poet, Caresse Crosby, owner and editor of Portfolio (1945-1948), who challenged artistic reception on both sides of the Atlantic by bringing glamorous modernism to her unbound journal of eclectic work. Crosby promoted co–operation between artists and writers from conflicting World War II countries through the placement and types of materials she published on the pages of her magazine. The epilogue calls for scholars to expand their view of the modernist project and recover the often “hidden” work by overlooked female little magazine editors. Like Ridge, Bennett, and Crosby before her, Kay Boyle (This Quarter 1927-1929), who can be linked to each editor (directly or indirectly), relied on her trusted network of friends as she edited This Quarter. Her editorial support for young and experienced artists who used innovative styles and her commitment to social justice parallels her colleagues' dedication to the modernist project. These women's labor, the significant literary time periods they worked in, the different genres, critical content, and styles of modernism they championed, and the social formations their journals produced expanded the base of modernism and reinvigorated American art and literature between the Wars, leaving a legacy for future artists and writers.

Abstract:
Those studying music during the mid-nineteenth century in the United States began to experience music education through many of the models of pedagogy that are still in use at the present time. The use of a method book for music study was a new concept. A few more serious piano students traveled to Europe to study with the major performing artists of the day. As the number of homes with pianos increased, so did piano method books for home use. Women of the gilded age were encouraged to pursue music, most often for the purpose of playing at home and in salon settings, which gave rise to new methodologies such as Nathan Richardson's New Method for the Pianoforte. The intent of this study is to present a careful examination of Richardson's New Method and the context in which his method and the revisions appeared.

Kim-McLean, Katherine Mary. "Engaging the manuscript : new editions and reading the 'whole book' in Chetham's Library MS 8009." Thesis, University of York, 2009. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/1243/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis considers the intersection of the manuscript and its literature through an examination of the late fifteenth century manuscript, Chetham’s Library 8009 (Mun. A.6.31) and provides four diplomatic editions. This manuscript contains fourteen texts in Middle English including romance, hagiography, courtesy literature, and a comic text. This thesis argues for the importance of reading medieval literature in its manuscript context. Although there is a growing trend to consider the ‘whole book’ and integrate analysis of the material artefact with interpretation, much work remains to be done. In Part I, this thesis presents a new paradigm for reading medieval literature, and argues that the manuscript forms a very literal community of texts, and that each text acts as a co-creator of meaning with the others. It then demonstrates four brief contextual readings that may be made within Chetham 8009 across generic boundaries, and that produce a shift in interpretive focus . Part II provides four diplomatic editions from Chetham 8009: the Life of St Katherine, the Liber Catonis, John Russell’s Book of Carving and Nurture, and the Book of the Duke and Emperor. This thesis aims to contribute to the study of medieval literature by arguing for a methodological shift in the way the literature is approached and by providing access to four texts either previously unedited or not easily accessible.

Abstract:
The purpose of this project is to bring to light three concert works by Theodor Albin Findeisen (1881-1936), namely Nixenreigen, Elegie, and Romantische Suite, and prepare them for use by modern double bassists. Save for Findeisen's compositions, which are largely out of print and unknown, the Late Romantic Austro-German school of composition is not represented in the double bass concert repertory. To establish the historical significance of Findeisen's concert works for double bass, this document includes background information on the composer and his work. This research culminates in the creation of newly arranged, transposed, transcribed, and edited performance editions that are informed by Findeisen's methodology and by modern performance techniques. This document addresses editorial decisions in creating these new editions.

Both popular and scholarly observers have portrayed New Orleans as a city both supported and burdened by its image as a diverse cultural other within the American South, historically tolerant of certain sins of the flesh. This image has been used by proponents and critics alike in order to push their respective agenda regarding the Crescent City. This thesis will not seek to discredit this image that is based largely on fact. However, using Prohibition as a case study, this thesis will use letters to the editor to uncover attitudes of New Orleanians in opposition to this reputation to reveal alternative and historically silenced voices of New Orleans, since for instance people of a certain age, gender, or ethnicity were silenced in the halls of government. This paper will reveal the opinions of New Orleanians regarding Prohibition and what these opinions can tell us about New Orleans’s image.

Abstract:
Espera-se contribuir para o estudo do jornalismo de revistas no Brasil, em especial para o campo das revistas de cidade.<br>This monograph is a case study of Época São Paulo magazine, Editora Globo\'s monthly publication which circulated from May 2008 to December 2013, as a supplement of weekly Época magazine. The purpose is to investigate the mistakes and successes of the title, both editorial and commercial, in order to explore the formats adopted by city magazines and formulate practical recommendations for this genre of publications in the age of the tablets and smartphones. In this work, this researcher\'s unstructured direct observation, in a period before the official beginning of the research (the author of this thesis worked as a reporter for Época São Paulo from 2008 to 2010 and as its editor from 2010 to 2012, resigning one year before the end of the title) is combined with the indirect observation about the backstage magazine (through long interviews with the three editors in chief in charge of the newsroom in successive periods) and also the study of the published issues of Época São Paulo and the selected bibliography. Among the researched topics were magazine journalism, utilitarian journalism, local information in the scope of the global society, the challenges of the metropolis as a space of consumption as well as of rights, authorship and objectivity in the practice of journalism, influence of the circulation and periodicity in the construction of relevance, and the challenges of communication in the public cyberspace. It is expected to contribute to the study of magazine journalism in Brazil, especially in the area of the city magazines.

Lichnovsky, Michael Wade. "Australian sonatas for alto saxophone and piano: new editions and performance guides for three works by major australian composers." Diss., University of Iowa, 2008. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/30.

Abstract:
This project has come about because of the need for Australian saxophonists to develop an awareness of saxophone history and culture in their own country. Dulcie Holland, William Lovelock and Margaret Sutherland were artists who were active and influential in the areas of performance, composition and pedagogy, helping to create and promote the musical arts in Australia during the first half of the twentieth century. The high regard in which they are held should be evidence enough that their works for saxophone must be performed by their fellow Australians as a part of a well rounded, international exposure to the very best repertoire available. Saxophonists in Australia will be able to place themselves in a relevant world context only when they are fully aware of the heritage their instrument has in their own country. The present editions (created using the type-setting software Sibelius 4) seek to make performance considerably easier by eliminating the need to use the composer's autograph manuscripts, which are sometimes difficult to read and understand, due to poor hand-copying or repeated photocopying which has subsequently made some pages illegible. The accompanying performance guides are designed as introductions, the first step for the young student wishing to tackle these national treasures.

Thus this work takes as the principle corpus of analysis the periods 1997-1998 and 2011-2012. Emphasizing the analysis of the magazine s editorials, covers and advertisements, this work investigates the effects of meaning that these texts produce based on its discoursive construction. For the description and analysis of the verbal-visual texts, it refers to the French semiotic and its model of analysis of the signification proposed by A. J. Greimas, together with the visual semiotic, with the contributions of J. M. Floch. Its objectives are to design a landscape about the emergence of the magazines and their similarity to the newspaper; to localize the emergence of the Brazilian pedagogic publications; to investigate the emergence and consolidation of the Editora Abril as an expressive communication company; to examine the creation of the Victor Civita Foundation and, lastly, to investigate the teacher simulacrum reiterated and strengthened by the discourse of Nova Escola (New School). The analysis points to the reinforcement of a simulacrum that sees education, specially the first two years, as vocation and mission, stressing the instrumental dimension at the expense of the conceptual. The gender questions are also important; above all by the fact of the woman-teacher simulacrum be continuously reiterated in the discourse of the refered media. In terms of discoursive procedures, the play between objectivity and subjectivity, reinforces the scientific discourse as well as the relation of approximation that the magazine establishes with its readers. Thus, this work verifies the absence of any lexeme that treats the associative and sindical questions related to the teaching profession. The reiteration of the red, in what refers to the visual aspects, and the passionate feature of the texts highlights the verbal-visual discourse of Nova Escola, intrinsically connected to the reinforcement of the love-dedication-education relation<br>Este trabalho examina a construção do discurso pedagógico na revista Nova Escola, os procedimentos discursivos utilizados nessa construção, e o quadro de valores no qual esses discursos se inserem.

Abstract:
Estas mudanças são explicitadas aos leitores como estra-tégia para renovar o contrato de leitura entre o periódico e seu público, especialmente nas edições de aniversário do jornal, onde a publicação conta e reconta sua história, reafirmando seu papel na comunidade em que circula.<br>The general objective of the research is to identify the graphic and editorial transformations of the newspaper Diário Popular de Pelotas between 1890 and 2016, tensioning how these relate to the local character of the journal and the contextual and technological changes that affect the publication. The methodological procedures are based on the model presented by Fonseca, Gomes and Campos (2016) for investigations into the history of design from printed materials. It covers the researcher's approach to the socio-historical context of the print from bibliographical and documentary research and graphic analysis of the journal itself. The cor-pus of analysis is composed of the newspaper's anniversary editions published at the begin-ning of each decade, as well as five other issues considered relevant in the pre-analysis survey, which resulted in a total of 18 editions, evaluated in their editorial aspects (covers, sections, columns and special pages, inserts and supplements) and graphic aspects (support, format, grid, newspaper name, typography and images). It can be observed that the construction of the editorial and graphic identity of the newspaper is associated with the principles of lo-cal/regional journalism, and turns to the scope in which it circulates – Pelotas and its sur-rounding cities. The editorial organization in special sections and columns, as well as the hierarchy of information that prioritizes the local news (with the largest section, supplements or with prominent spaces) lends visibility to these principles. Throughout the evaluated pe-riod, there is an editorial and graphic consistency, although the newspaper goes through ad-aptations related to technological and contextual changes. These changes are made explicit to readers as a strategy to renew the contract of reading between the paper and its public, especially in the newspaper's anniversary editions, where the publication tells and recounts its history, reaffirming its role in the community in which it circulates.

Abstract:
The topic is focused on a main period of the history of art and French post-war design but which is though largely unknown. During this period of growth also called « Trente Glorieuses », a line of eleven young French designers impose their self in the landscape of the model’s creation. This generation tries hard to promote the design from the end of the Second World War by basing on the social functionalism’s doctrine which is defended before by Francis Jourdain, father of the French serial furniture and member of the UAM, and then by his disciples René Gabriel and Marcel Gascoin. Their communal training in the best schools or in the design offices of their eldests, the similarity of their careers and the existence of personal affinities may allow us to claim the possibility of a generational phenomenon never identified in itself yet. Together or separately, this designers desire to defend the French rationalism and a production without any artifice, but above all the collaboration of the creator and the manufacturer for relevant forms and the proclamation of the beauty in the utility. Moreover, it is with them that appears the designer status who has to conceive furniture and interior organisations of quality and which is functional and reachable for everyone. This pioneer generation, relegated at the middle ground of the design history, deserves to have their place in the genesis of a profession and a discipline from which we still learn lessons

Especially in Taiwan, there is only one institution provides such statistics, therefore the authenticity of these statistics has been widely quest about. Scholars also shown their worry about that the commercially development of news organizations will lead them heading to the iceberg. Indeed, News organizations need a tool to evaluate the effects of their programs to the audience. Even through TV rating has been queried by scholars, why the tool still irreplaceable? There must be something that deep inside between TV rating and news organizations that haven’t been noticed. To break into this connection, we must first realized that TV rating already been symbiosis with news organizations. And clear-out how the tool been used inside news organizations. For the time being, scholars have been reviewing such relation from outsider point of view and made the conclusion based on such basis. From which, we think is just skin-deep. In this study, we will provide evidences from inside the news room. This thesis is based on analyze of the communications between editors. Together with interviews of senior news producers, we try to assay the tool phenomenology of TV rating inside the news room. Further we observe how news organizations use rating to discipline news editors under the theory of genealogy of power form Michael Foucault. In contrary, how editors resist news organizations through floating power of rating. From such study we can clearly identified the reality of close connection between TV rating and news room. And then we could have more valid suggestions about replacing TV rating in the future. Keywords: TV rating, news editors, tool phenomenology, Foucault, power

Abstract:
With today’s rise of social media, the traditional media industry must embrace the development of new media, and media practitioners must also integrate with the industry’s transformation. This study explores the changes in United Daily News journalists’ gatekeeping practices when they are assigned to work as news fan group editors. This study adopts a qualitative approach to study the UDN fan group as a case study, and applies the participatory observation, in-depth interview, and secondary data analysis methods to explore how the newspaper media use social platforms as a way to steer their own news and understand the work practices of the social news media editors. Because news content is affected by the nature of the platform, the journalistic profession is replaced by a traffic- and user-oriented algorithms, so that the new journalistic gate-keeping practices have introduced new standards in the news production process. This study intends to answer the following questions: What newspaper work practices have been adapted in the new role as social media editor? How do the social news media editors chose between social responsibility and platform traffic? The findings of this research show that the news contents offered by the UDN fan group were based on the data which focuses on the fans’ reading habits and issues they may be interested in. In this sense, social media editors need to build an interactive dialog with their fans, devise the news lead from fans’ point of view. However, social media editors still need to make a choice between their social responsibility and increasing news traffic when they deal with controversial issues. Nonetheless, retaining the brand value of the news organization remains the priority.

Abstract:
Abstract This study takes a qualitative look at the interplay between women’s leadership and newsroom socialisation and the news agenda as experienced and understood by women editors at the Mail & Guardian, through a process of interviews with women editors, supplemented by a brief look at the publication when referenced during the course of the interviews. This study confirms previous research that suggests that an increase of women in the newsroom is not enough to address issues of gender representation in newsrooms and news representation. Although at the Mail & Guardian, this study indicates that the appointment of a woman editor impacted the newsroom positively on gender awareness issues and the publication itself in its gender representation, there are indications that this is a result of a number of factors and not gender alone. In summary, this research found that it is the combination of positioning, power and influence, with a gender agenda, intention and purpose, in an environment that is receptive to change, that will significantly contribute to changes both within the socialisation of the newsroom and translate into a higher level of gender awareness and sensitivity in newspaper’s gender representation.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to find an answer to the question if gender influences news production and news selection. It is hypothesized that in national daily broadsheet newspapers, the editor's gender has no influence on the professional behaviour and therefore editors' preferences of topics and news values should be identical. The theoretical part deals with different approaches to the topic of gender influence on the news production, describes the situation and stereotyping of female journalists and strategies they choose to deal with it. Next it briefly recapitulates the main news values theories and dichotomy of "hard" and "soft" news. The research part describes a study of gender influence on decision-making processes during news selection in Czech national daily broadsheet newspapers. The statistical methods used herein include the Student's T-test, Z-test and ANOVA. The statistics show no significant differences between male and female editors in consideration of news topic importance (to the reader), news values assessment or the selection of printable news. All the editors in the researched respondent population tend to favor "hard" news and to consider the same values and topics important in the same manner regardless of their gender. Abstract:
This dissertation project was carried out within the scope of the Master in Communication, Culture and Information Technologies, within the major of Culture and Creative Industries. The current communicational context is defined by its interconnection and large-scale technological evolution. With the evolution of the new media and the audiences exposed to them, there are new realities not only in terms of the media landscape, but also in the techniques used to fulfil organizational goals and create a position in a space where all the players are creators and consumers of contents. Thus, influencers appear as authorities in the digital space and intermediaries between their followers and organizations. This research work seeks to explore not only the way in which the investigation of audiences and the media evolved over time, but also the emergence and spread of the phenomenon of influencers, these themes being addressed within the scope of the case study to Porto Editora. The methodology used consisted of online observation of 64 impressions of the Feed and 215 impressions of the Stories from the Instagram profile @portoeditora, as well as a semi-directed interview conducted with the Head of the Communication and Image Office of Porto Editora, through which it was possible to understand the relationship with this subject and understand the particularities associated with it. The results show that, although influencers are not prominent in Portugal, they are used as a link between established publishers and younger audiences in the in the context of online social networks.
