Editor's reportAny report of this year's activity must begin with an acknowledgement of Bill Reese's central role. Every issue of 1995 has been put together by Bill, and several issues of next year will also bear his imprint. Over his seven years as editor, Bill Reese has set a high standard of editorial excellence. Under his leadership, the size of the Quarterly has increased markedly, as the number of articles, essay reviews, and book reviews has grown. In these same years, subscriptions and memberships have also increased steadily, which I take to be a measure of widespread approval of Bill's work. I am pleased that Bill will continue his affiliation with the Quarterly by serving as one of four associate editors.

Abstract:
New Zealand has had three women prime ministers, and the first country in the world to give women a vote, but there is still a gender gap in leadership in the traditionally staid arena of daily newspapers. One-third of the country’s daily newspapers have never had a female editor. The gender imbalance is significant in an industry that still breaks the majority of news items, and is influential in public information. The low ratio of women editors is incongruous with the fact the majority of journalism students are female, and a large number new hires are women. This longitudinal study has interviewed every woman who has held the position of editor, which totals only 15. The good news is that currently there are more women in editorships than ever before, the sad news is that this still represents only 29 percent of daily editors. The attitudinal interviews show the editors love the job, but quit after only a few short years, but this may be changing.

Abstract:
Online comments within news articles are a key way people share opinions. Discovering insightful comments can, however, be challenging for readers. A solution to this problem is using comment curation, whereby professional editors select the highest quality comments manually --- referred to as ''editor-picks''. This paper studies the growing use of professional editor-curation for user-generated comments. We focus on the New York Times as a case study, using a dataset covering 80k articles. We study the characteristics of editor-pick comments, highlighting how editor criteria vary across news sections (e.g. sports, entertainment). We find that editor-pick comments tend to be longer, more relevant to the article, positive in sentiment, and contain low toxicity. Our analysis further reveals that editors within different news sections exhibit differing criteria when they perform comment selection. Thus, we finally propose a set of models that can automatically identify good candidate editor-picks. Our ultimate goal is to reduce editor and journalistic workload, increasing productivity and the quality of curated comments.

Abstract:
News planning is the process of planning and managing all aspects of news production. It involves the steps an editor, reporter or editorial team takes to decide on the topic, story, sources, style and format to use in preparing the story. The goal of news planning is to ensure that news is presented in a way that is clear, accurate, balanced and attractive. The news agenda refers to the list of topics or issues that the media chooses to cover in a certain period of time. The focus of health news refers to the approach or point of view taken in preparing and covering health issues. Health news can cover a wide range of topics, from the latest medical developments, health policy issues, healthy lifestyles, medical research, pandemics, medicines, and more. Abstract:
This article systematizes the results of a study of the news releases of the Nizhni Novgorod branch of the VGTRK GTRK and analyzes which topics the editors of regional television focus on. Based on their own preferences, editors put their concerns at the beginning of the informational news block. This is how the place of these materials in the information space of Nizhni Novgorod region and beyond is determined. The study shows that most of the news stories presented at the beginning of the issue have a social nature. In most cases, topics came directly from the viewers. However, there are substantial differences in the structure of the news release, depending on the personality of the editor. This, among other things, affects the nature of the formation of the news agenda. On the one hand, it can be social and criminal, on the other – directly civil.

This study suggests that the tolerance of newspaper editors for computer manipulation depends on the category of photographs. Editors differ significantly in their tolerance level of computer manipulation of spot news, feature, and photo illustrations. In a survey experiment among 677 newspaper editors, results suggest that editors use a continuum of photo categories. Editors are intolerant of altering spot -news photos, but much more tolerant of altering soft-news photos such as feature photos and photo illustrations.

Abstract:
It is the desk editor’s task to revise the press releases presented to the newspaper in order to get news stories that are fit to print. What does that mean: Revise? This question is answered by a corpus study of appositions in press releases and the news stories that are based on them. The analysis is carried out in two directions. In the ‘forward’ analysis, the question is how appositions in source texts are dealt with by desk editors. In the ‘backward’ analysis, the origins are traced in the news stories. It is shown that appositions are revised quite often. From the revision data we may infer a number of motives for editorial interventions. Newspaper editors are more inclined than writers of press releases to favor concise sentences with a smooth, uninterrupted intonation contour and with a neutral outsider’s perspective.

Abstract:
Conversational analysis of language used (and recorded) during 64 different news conferences reveals patterns that editors use in arguing over what stories should appear on the front page. Editors' routinely signal front page newsworthiness by elaborating/defending their choices and work hard to defend the newsworthiness of their choices. Traditional news values are part of the strategy that editors use, but editors also find ways to obscure the role their own ideology may play in their own news selections. One strong trend is that stories are more likely to be chosen for the front page — with little argument — if they are part of a recent ongoing story. News themes, in other words, like individuals, have history.

PurposeThis paper aims to explore the decision‐making practices and processes related to gathering, selecting, and publishing of internal corporate news through intranets in large multinationals in Finland.Design/methodology/approachThis study is based on eight semi‐structured interviews of intranet editors responsible for the corporate news on the intranet.FindingsIntranet editors are the main corporate gatekeepers and agenda setters making news publication decisions; i.e. determining what is important and newsworthy. These editors make decisions independently rather than collectively, thus news gathering is greatly affected by the networking and organizational skills of the individual editors. Companies prefer neutral news. Honesty and openness are principles that justify also the publication of “bad news.”Research limitations/implicationsThis study explored how intranet editors construct reality through shaping internal communication content. The study did not attempt to assess the effects or effectiveness of this communication. Similarly, although intranet's goals and purposes were assessed, the extent to which the intranet helps the company achieve its strategic goals was not analyzed in detail. Further, research is needed to explore these important issues.Practical implicationsThis paper offers practical examples of how large multinationals convey internal news through intranets. It highlights aspects that may help companies improve intranet's strategic value by enhancing internal communication through the intranet.Originality/valueThis paper reveals the power of individual editors in constructing reality for the organization. It also offers practitioners, researchers, teachers, and students a rare view into the real‐life processes and practices related to communication via intranets that can rarely be accessed and evaluated by outsiders.

A national survey of newspaper editors examined how editors view the importance of different criteria in selecting foreign news to run. Results show that editors considered these factors important in making choices: threat to the United States and world peace, anticipated reader interest, timeliness, and U.S. involvement. Editors also regarded loss of lives and property as important but less so than other factors. Most editors appear to focus more on factors having significant impact or consequences, especially when American security and national interest are involved. Canonical correlational analysis indicates that editors' perceptions of foreign news factors are determined by individual differences and organizational constraints in the newsroom.

Letters from the editor-in-chief have both been celebrated and criticized as a potential media accountability instrument. In the light of these divergent qualifications we analyzed corporate accounts in letters from the editor-in-chief in four selected Dutch media, applying Coombs’ defensive-accommodative continuum (2007; 1998) for crisis communication to the news media sector. Content analysis shows that journalistic organizations facing criticism use seven different response strategies, ranging from defensive to accommodative: rejection, refutation, evasion, justification, mitigation, confession and alteration. Although occasionally editors-in-chief admit mistakes, practices and implementation of professional standards remain undisputed. This confirms the ambiguous role of letters from editors-in-chief as a platform for both self criticism and image management.

Abstract:
The newsroom is a place to control news in a mass media. From that room, the editor-in-chief and the editors become important controls to direct the journalists. All editorial crews work with a journalistic code of ethics that is inherent in the profession as a journalist so that it provides various limitations, let alone interferes with independence at work. This study tries to explore the newsroom (newsroom) of Central Java-DIY Metro TV when producing news programs and the various interventions they face. This study uses media political economy theory in a critical paradigm, this study focuses on the structuration process that occurs in the Metro TV newsroom, Central Java-DIY. This study uses an intrinsic case study in a descriptive-qualitative approach. The results showed that there were internal and external interventions in the newsroom. Internal intervention comes from the media business division and external intervention comes from sources within the local government. The editors take measurable actions to respond to all these interventions.

On the surface, the advent of facsimile machines might bode greater and swifter exchange of information. Not so, say U.S. and Canadian editors drowning under a deluge of unsolicited faxed press releases. Most editors don't pay any more attention to faxes than to other kinds of releases, and many wish something could be done to stem the flood.

Mayo-Cubero, Marcos. "A multivariable analysis on news production in Spain: digital newsroom profile, polyvalent journalists and gender perspective." Communication & Society 35, no. 3 (2022): 1–14. http://dx.doi.org/10.15581/003.35.3.1-14.

Abstract:
This article explores how the main Spanish newsrooms structure news production in the digital convergence from a quantitative approach. The data come from a nationwide survey applied to 30 editors-in-chief of Spain’s leading newspapers, radios, televisions, and digital natives. We study the newsroom size, news sections weight, freelancers, news agencies, and gender with multivariable analysis. We found that the gender gap has been overcome, and women are mostly in newsrooms (61%). Despite progress, women continue to have higher levels of unemployment and keep facing a glass ceiling in accessing the top positions. They just account for only 6.6% of the editors-in-chief in the sample. Likewise, we found a correlation between female journalists and the Society news section size. Findings suggest a specific news production organization by analyzing newsroom journalistic practice. Politics (23%) is the main news section and in decreasing order of importance: Society (18.5%), Business (16.5%), Sport (16.5%), International (14%) and Culture (11.5%). The average newsroom has between 101 and 300 journalists, with less than 20% freelancers. The media industry demands a polyvalent journalist. Skills, abilities, and competencies that different professionals previously developed now converge in a single professional with a polyvalent and multitasking profile. We found that it is a widespread journalistic practice in most TV outlets for reporters to work for several daily editions of newscasts (midday and night) and even provide news content for other organization shows. Journalists no longer work for a specific section, not even for a news show, but they now work for the entire organization.

Abstract:
This study sought to determine whether top editors at chain-owned and large newspapers would have more autonomy and freedom to improve editorial content than top editors at independent and small newspapers. The theoretical rationale is that role specialization promotes increased emphasis on news and editorials and, at the same time, removes the influence of publishers and owners from the news production process. The study found that differences between chain and independent ownership were not significant, but that top editors at larger newspapers did have more autonomy.

Abstract:
This thesis is entitled "Clone Journalism Practices and Violations of Journalistic Ethics (Case Study of Press Company Organizations in Bengkulu Local Media)". The aim of this research is to present the practice of cloned journalism and violations of journalistic ethics in case studies of press company organizations in the local Bengkulu media. This research uses a descriptive analysis method with a qualitative approach. In the practice of cloning journalism and violations of journalistic ethics based on the code of ethics guidelines created by the Press Council and regulated in Law No. 40 of 1999. By paying attention to news elements such as news titles, leads, news content, and quotations using Galtung's gate keeper theory and Ruge (McQuail, 2010:310). The research results show that local media in Bengkulu have carried out the practice of cloning journalism on news published in their respective media. Researchers also found that the media that most often practice clone journalism are media that are members of the Benkulu press company organization, namely the Indonesian Cyber Media Union (SMSI). The practice of cloning journalism is an ethical violation committed by many elements. Starting from journalists, and editors to editor-in-chief. This practice is carried out systematically and the editors do not function in editing and editing news. The practice of cloning journalism is a violation of journalistic ethics in article 2 which states that Indonesian journalists must use professional methods in carrying out journalistic practices.

A survey of 66 foreign desk editors of metropolitan dailies revealed the majority of editors believe their audience is interested in reading about South Africa, and more so than reading about other African nations. Both readers and policy makers have been influenced by what they have read on South Africa, the editors said. News about South Africa is adequate in volume but lacking in analysis, according to the editors.

Abstract:
Online media has been widely used as a media for jihad by Islamic activists around the world, including in Indonesia. These media include HIdayatullah.com and Liputanislam.com. The two media reported on the conflict that occurred in the Middle East. In this study, researchers used the theory of message content hierarchy in the Shoemaker & Reese mass media. Based on the explanation above, this study aims to find out how the theory of influence hierarchy is applied in determining the production of news about the Middle East conflict in the online media Liputanislam.com and Hidayatullah.com. Researchers use the post-positivism paradigm as a research approach. The research method used in this study is descriptive analysis. The data collection method in this study was interviews with the editors of Liputanislam.com, news writers of Liputanislam.com, and editors of Hidayatullah.com. The results of the study show that there are similarities and differences in the editorial policies of Liputanislam.com and Hidayatullah.com in reporting on Middle East conflicts. The similarities lie at the individual and ideological levels. At the individual level, both news writers for Liputanislam.com and Hidayatullah.com have foreign language skills, namely English and Arabic. At the ideological level, the editors of Liputanislam.com and Hidayatullah.com believe that the mainstream media in Indonesia needs to be more balanced and make many mistakes in publishing news about the Middle East conflict. Meanwhile, the difference is at the organizational and extramedia levels. At the organizational level, Liputanislam.com media workers are given more freedom in choosing news sources than Hidayatullah.com media workers. For the extramedia level, Hidayatullah.com editors tend to choose news sources from authoritative media or official news sites and news agencies owned by Middle Eastern countries. On the other hand, the editorial staff of Liputanislam.com refers to media they think share the same ideology and ideals.

Abstract:
Information is now abundant so has it been polluted, thus this paper looked at how professional news production could be redefined to stay away from purveyors of misinformation but a safe space in this era. In order to achieve this, we examined three areas where information could be misappropriated through existing literature namely: headlines, online news editors and gatekeepers. We point out that headlines play a pivotal role in the information ecosystem where they can mislead the audience. This is done through the usage of catchy phrases to grab the attention of the audience. Further, we found out from the exciting research that some online news editors do not adhere to certain ethical standards and so they publish stories without verifying the veracity of the story. We noted that politicians have infiltrated the media space which has had a major negative impact on how the editor chooses his stories. The paper recommends that headlines should not only be written for the clickbait but they should be written so as not to mislead the audience while there should also be a limit on how political figures can influence the media agenda. Lastly, people who do not have a background in journalism to know the ethical implications of their news stories should be coached by an experienced journalist which would help minimise the information pollution we face today in this era of the internet and social media.

Abstract:
The study in this study used a discourse text analysis model to find out and explain the positions of three wary, Analysis and Sinar Indonesia Baru (SIB) newspapers in presenting the issue of the collapse of Al-Ikhlas Mosque at Timor Medan throughout 2012. This study also wanted to know the policy process media in determining one news that will be presented to the reader including determining the issue, title, content of news, paragraphs, placement of news and news sources, especially related to the presentation of the news of the mosque's collapse. The goal is to look at the three newspaper mechanisms examined in producing news, journalists' relations with the media and media editors managing the news. The unit of analysis studied is news of events / hard (straight news / hard news) and news of interviews or analysis (news analysis). Researchers used the main theories of media discourse structure, media construction and media cognition from van. This research was carried out with three steps namely text, social cognition and context. In the text study, the researcher used two methods: analyzing the content with quantitative-descriptive and analyzing the framing of Robert Entmann. From the results of news framing, researchers conducted an in-depth interview with the editor in chief / editor of each newspaper studied to uncover and strengthen the results of the study as in the van Dijk model media text analysis phase. Interviews were conducted to determine the editorial / journalist's social cognition processes in the wary, Analysis and Sinar Indonesia Baru newspapers in constructing and interpreting the news of the collapse of the Al-Ikhlas Mosque. The results obtained from the three newspapers about the study were discourses framed by three newspapers about the news of the collapse of the Al-Ikhlas Mosque which had a difference: first, the wary Daily expressed the truth with the background of the case problem so that it clearly showed its attitude against the mosque collapse. whereas Analysis and Sinar Indonesia Baru are more "safe looking". Secondly, the Daily wary, Analysis, and Sinar Indonesia Baru in constructing the collapse of the Al-Ikhlas mosque are strongly influenced by the background of the newspaper and its readers, and the editor's interpretation is influenced by religious and ethnic sentiments of the newspaper owner's background to strengthen the wary (Islam) Daily ideology. Analysis (ethnic Chinese) and Sinar Indonesia Baru (Christians) in the midst of the community which ultimately makes inconsistencies in the meaning and delivery of messages from the reality of the destruction of the Al-Ikhlas Mosque to the reader.
