Abstract:
The economic strike literature focuses on rational actors engaging in strike activity to increase their economic outcome. A separate literature emphasizes institutional, behavioural and political reasons for strike activity. While these literatures are rarely integrated, we posit that micro-level institutional turmoil, indexed by the presence of intra-firm union rivalries or outside third-party provo cateurs, and the maturity of the bargaining relationship, are important determi nants of economic strike activity. In three new micro-level data sets from Korea, micro-level institutional turmoil is found to be significantly related to strike activity.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this study is to develop an analytical comparison between the impact of social media communication (both user-generated and firm-created) and the effects of traditional media communication. In particular, the components of customer-based brand equity and any difference in the effects according to brand origin associations are investigated. The target group consisted of fans and followers of beer brands on social media. Design/methodology/approach In all, 192 questionnaires were collected a survey link that was posted on beer brand pages that operate in the Italian market. Structural equation modeling was developed to investigate the impact of social and traditional media communication on brand equity and a multi-group analysis to examine the differences according to the brand names’ origin associations. Findings Results show that fans and followers cannot be considered as a collective unit. Additionally, consumers make a clear distinction between firm-created/user-generated social media and traditional media communication. Specifically, they distinguish how the effects of the two media outlets differ in relation to the brand origin associations. International brands should concentrate on both firm-created and user-generated communication, whereas national (Italian) brands should foster their firm-created communications. In both cases, however, traditional media communication loses its effectiveness on the brand equity components. Originality/value Contrary to existing literature, this project compares the effect of 2.0 and traditional media on various social media platforms, pointing out two different models according to the brands’ origin associations. This study develops interesting insights both for international companies with huge brand portfolios and for national firms in a complex market like those for beer.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Top management of a multidivisional firm needs to strike a balance between providing transfer pricing autonomy to divisional managers and retaining some level of control to prevent dysfunctional behavior. Little empirical evidence exists on how top management makes this trade-off. Drawing on agency theory, we predict that transfer pricing autonomy is influenced by intermediate product standardization, foreign investment, tax rate difference, and the weight on firm-level performance measures in the divisional manager's performance evaluation. We also predict that the extent of mismatch between transfer pricing autonomy and organizational characteristics leads to lower perceived fairness and perceived transfer pricing effectiveness by divisional managers. Using data collected from a cross-sectional survey of 210 divisional managers, we find results consistent with our predictions.

Abstract:
Native advertising is a type of online advertising that matches the form and function of the platform on which it appears. In practice, the choice between display and in-feed native advertising presents brand advertisers and online news publishers with conflicting objectives. Advertisers face a trade-off between ad clicks and brand recognition, whereas publishers need to strike a balance between ad clicks and the platform’s trustworthiness. For policy makers, concerns that native advertising confuses customers prompted the U.S. Federal Trade Commission to issue guidelines for disclosing native ads. This research aims to understand how consumers respond to native ads versus display ads and to different styles of native ad disclosures, using randomized online and field experiments combining behavioral clickstream, eye movement, and survey response data. The results show that when the position of an ad on a news page is controlled for, a native ad generates a higher click-through rate because it better resembles the surrounding editorial content. However, a display ad leads to more visual attention, brand recognition, and trustworthiness for the website than a native ad.

Abstract:
We examine how a firm’s operational slack is associated with current income and future stock price crash risk. By doing so, we test the validity of a firm’s alternative motivations for holding operational slack. We show that Supply Chain Slack, which is based on excess working capital, is associated with higher current profits and higher future crash risk. This evidence is consistent with the firm hoarding bad news. In contrast, SG&A Slack, which is based on excess selling, general, and administrative expenses, is associated with lower current income and lower future crash risk. This evidence is consistent with the firm insuring against rare and adverse events. Furthermore, a firm’s stock price crash risk is lower when a slack type is more costly, consistent with both motivations. Overall, our findings suggest a stronger profit-crash risk tradeoff when firms hold more operational slack.

Abstract:
This study examines the effects of the adoption of International Accounting Standards No. 12, Income Taxes (IAS No.12) on the incremental information about future profitability for firms reporting losses compared to Korean Generally Accepted Accounting No.16, Accounting for Income Taxes (K-GAAP No.16). Specifically, this paper shows that whether the IAS No.12 affects the information of deferred tax assets (DTAs) regarding loss persistence which implies the ability to predict earnings sustainability. Using a sample of 2,905 observations from Korean listed firms that reported a loss between 2007 and 2014, we divide loss firm-years into categories of ‘good news’ (GN) or ‘bad news’ (BN) based on whether management appears to report an increase in DTAs. We find that our tax categories have incremental information about the probability of loss reversal under K-GAAP No. 16, but under IAS No.12 the incremental effects of a deferred tax balance disappear. Also, we find that investors underweight the informativeness of DTAs under K-GAAP, and after the adoption of IAS No.12, investors cannot obtain buy-and-hold returns by buying GN firm-years and selling BN firms-years. However, this is not because investors understand the information of DTAs, but because the informativeness of DTAs deteriorates after the relaxation in the recognition threshold of DTAs.

Abstract:
Triple bottom line is making businesses increasingly conscious about the people, planet and profit. On one side where earning profits are crucial for organizations, the concept of sustainable corporate social responsibility (CSR) is also emerging as a major concern for the corporate strategy. How to strike a balance between the two is one of the major challenges ahead for organizations. Moreover, Indian consumers are also nowadays becoming more aware about the responsibilities that a firm should possess. They are not ignorant as they were earlier; media is more vigilant and companies have now started knowing about the escalating negative effects of neglecting society, dynamism, building brand reputation by incorporating CSR and increased competition in the marketing environment for being socially responsible. Therefore, this article is an endeavour to measure the extent to which Indian consumers are aware about CSR and whether CSR has any impact on Indian consumers’ actual buying behaviour. Data were collected from 232 respondents via a questionnaire. The results showed a significant positive effect of independent variables called intensity, intended loyalty and influence of socially responsible firms on dependent variables which is consumers’ actual buying behaviour. Regression analysis was carried out to arrive at the result. In addition to this, the study also found that Indian consumers are aware about the CSR activities of the organizations. The result also indicated that CSR is one of the determining factors while purchasing any product or services.

When disaster strikes, the weak suffer mightily, the strong only slightly. That is the lesson from stock market reactions to COVID-19. Strong firms had a robust financial position, advanced environmental and social performance, and were not severely exposed to social distancing and lockdowns. Firms with significant international exposure suffered more, at least at first. The ultimate effects of policy interventions, including those by central banks, have yet to be revealed. The market recovery in the second quarter of 2020 is like a patient recovering from COVID-19: hopeful but still uncertain. Managers and policymakers should project the future with great caution.

Abstract:
Earnings management and corporate governance relationships are examined for a sample of 49 Portuguese listed firms considering an unbalanced panel for the period 2002-2017, using panel corrected standard errors models and considering the family ownership effect. Empirical findings reveal that there is a positive relationship between corporate board independence and earnings management and that the presence of women on board decreases earnings management practices. Results are consistent with the hypothesis that earnings management practices are lower in family firms than in non-family firms. Size, being audited by the Big 4 companies, return on assets, loss, and the existence of an audit committee on board influence positively earnings management, but leverage, age, and ownership control are negatively related to earnings management. Results indicate that further auditing and control is necessary for Portuguese listed companies leading to strict recommendations to be followed by policymakers regarding control of these firms.

Abstract:
New media and modes of expression present issues that encourage understanding and reframing of modern Latino media. But in an older and little-studied medium that today is a cornerstone not merely of Latino but all mass communication—Spanish-language television such as Telemundo, Televisa, and Spanish International Network—a new need is found in a long unaddressed question: In an English-speaking country, how could a Spanish-language institution have emerged? The need for a first account of Spanish-language television is reflected in fervor among Latinos who believe its obscurity erases their history. Hidden historical source work can be and is found. A detective story that results in an inside story explains the meaning and prominence of Spanish-language television today. Significant yet unknown founding parents, historical roots tangled in two counties (Mexico and the U.S.), conflicts, and eventual landmark strides are introduced. Previewed are several themes and revelations. Because of foreign ownership restrictions, the now-giant Univision began as an outlaw firm. While U.S. mass communication is understood as a “Fortress America,” Spanish-language television internationalized U.S. media with implications scholars and experts have overlooked.

Period: 1976–1986. The most radiant period in Spanish- language television ensues when SIN’s satellite links provide the U.S. vast international programming. SIN is chief affiliate of Azcárraga Milmo’s multinational network he names “Univision.” Ignoring Fouce’s lawsuit, Anselmo consolidates control. Without competition, turning profits, and freed of Azcárraga’s grip, he pushes numerous initiatives, many unorthodox. His hunger strike in New York obtains a prized World Trade Center transmitting site. Using names of fictitious characters, his letters to the FCC win needed satellite relays. He launches the first Spanish-language network news. Headed by Gustavo Godoy, the newscast excels until Televisa, and its head Jacobo Zabludovsky, attempt its takeover. In the largest-ever mutiny in a U.S. newsroom, Godoy and dozens of news personnel resign. They force Televisa’s retreat. However, a ten-year “golden age” ends with the removal of Anselmo, Azcárraga, and others, and the demise of Spanish International.

Abstract:
Precipitation is often the primary weather factor affecting outdoor activities. Precipitation that is of an unexpected type or intensity or that comes at an unexpected time or recurs more frequently than expected can disrupt both recreational and natural resource management plans. Heavy rain or snowfall can interfere with travel and threaten safety. Precipitation is water, whether in liquid or solid form, that falls from the atmosphere and reaches the ground. Table 8.1, adapted from Federal Meteorological Handbook No. 1 (National Weather Service, 1995), describes the different types of precipitation particles, collectively called hydrometeors. International guidelines for the reporting of precipitation do not include a category for sleet. Meteorologists in the United States use the term to describe tiny ice pellets that form when rain or partially melted snowflakes refreeze before reaching the ground. These particles bounce when they strike the ground and produce tapping sounds when they hit windows. Colloquial usage of the term, often used by the news media, coincides with British usage, which defines sleet as a mixture of rain and snow. Snow pellets, or graupel, are common in high mountain areas in summer. Graupel are low density particles (i.e., not solid ice) formed when a small ice particle (an ice crystal, snowflake, ice pellet, or small hailstone) falls through a cloud of supercooled (section 8.4) water droplets. The tiny droplets freeze as they impact the larger ice particle, building it into a rounded mass containing air inclusions (figure 8.1). This coating of granular ice particles is called rime, and the particle is said to be rimed. Graupel is usually produced in deep convective clouds that extend above the freezing level. Whereas graupel reaches the ground at high elevations, it usually melts to form rain before reaching the ground at lower elevations. As falling snow accumulates, a snowpack develops that can be described in terms of water content and density. The water content of snow is usually expressed as specific gravity, a number obtained in this application by dividing the water-depth equivalent of snow by the actual snow depth.

Abstract:
Based on economic power struggle, the economic strength began to take the place of military power and economic security has been considered as important as military security in this new world order. Multinational companies and their feasibility studies constitute the agenda of politic risks before entering these markets. Political risk faced by firms can be defined as “the risk of a strategic, financial, or personnel loss for a firm because of such nonmarket factors as macroeconomic and social policies, or events related to political instability”. However, terrorism should be considered as a multiplier effect on some of the components mentioned above. Terrorism itself and these strict measures directly affect investments. In 2012, FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) flows into the Middle East and North Africa have been adversely affected by political risk over the past couple of years. Investor perceptions of political risks in the region remain elevated across a range of risks. The Arab Spring countries have fared worse than other developing countries in the region. The risk perception of civil disturbance and political violence, but also breach of contract, is especially prominent in Arab Spring countries. In other words, global terrorism has created a negative multiplier effect in the region. In this context, Multiplier effect can be summarized as an effect on a target, situation or event which exceed its creating strength than expected. Considering this impact, MNC’s SWOT analysis and investment analysis must signify a redefinition in a wide range by the means of political risk perceptions.

Abstract:
Facing an ever-growing demand for large-area solar cells and flat-panel displays, the industry strives to produce larger, cheaper and better performing thin films. Computer simulation has proved to be a reliable and cost-efficient way to optimize existing technologies, to develop and test new ideas. The most widely used technology of thin film production is plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), which involves multiple physical and chemical processes: electromagnetic wave propagation, plasma-chemical processes (ionization, dissociation, excitation, recombination, attachment, ion bombardment, etc.), convective and diffusive transport, thermal effects, gas-phase chemical reactions, heterogeneous reactions on the surface, and the target process of film growth. The temporal and spatial scales of these processes span many orders of magnitude (from nanoseconds to hours and from Angstrom to meters). Modeling these coupled processes with a fine level of detail and appropriate scale in three dimensions is still out of reach of modern computational resources; and special modeling and simulation approaches are required to meet the challenge [1].

Abstract:
Limiting solar power is the inability to cost effectively store energy. The most cost effective means to store solar energy is thermally in the ground, which can then be used for direct conversion to electricity. However, doing so is limited by a historically poor thermal efficiency of such engines. A novel Stirling engine is posed which more closely mimics a Carnot heat engine. It does this through the use of a new passive thermal ‘switch’ which permits heat flow into the expansion chamber of the Stirling engine only when the temperature of the chamber is above a desired value. Ideally heat would be added only at the end of the compression stroke and the beginning of the expansion stroke. Central to this thermal switch is the use of a vanadium dioxide (VO2) low mass heat exchanger internal to the expansion chamber. This low mass heat exchanger allows the film material to track and react to the temperature changes within the expansion chamber, permitting it to transfer heat only when needed. An adiabatic model of this enhanced solar Stirling engine is developed. Results indicate that the thermal efficiency can be nearly doubled, delivering a second law efficiency of over 0.6. Further, a year round overall efficiency accounting for losses in the Stirling engine and solar thermal collectors of 7% appears to be feasible when this engine is integrated with ground solar storage, providing the necessary power to meet loads in a low energy residence. Such results demonstrate promise for future application of this technology.

Abstract:
Abstract To address one of the main environmental concerns, the engine out emissions, an enhanced understanding of the combustion process itself is fundamental. Recent optical and laser optical measurement techniques provide a promising approach to investigate and optimize the combustion process regarding emissions. These measurement techniques are already quite common for passenger car and truck size engines and significantly contribute to their improvement. Transferring these measurement techniques to large bore engines from low to high speed is still rather more uncommon especially due to the bigger challenges caused by the engine size and thus much higher stability requirements and design effort for optical accessibility. To cover this new field of research a new approach for a medium speed large bore engine was developed using a fisheye optic mounted centrally in the cylinder head to design a fully optically accessible engine test bench. This new approach is detailed with a test setup layout and a stability concept consisting of cooling systems and the development of a suitable operation strategy based on simulation and experimental verification. The design of this single cylinder engine with 350mm bore and 440mm stroke providing 530kW nominal load at 750 rpm was tested up to 85% nominal load in skipped fire engine operation mode. The measurements of the flame chemiluminescence of a dual fuel combustion of the diesel gas type present proof of the feasibility of the new design as a starting point for future systematic studies on the combustion process of large bore engines.

Abstract:
In recent years, more severe requirement of budget and safety from industrial fields, especially space exploration and defense field, demand a new class of materials whose characteristics can satisfy both various engineering requirement and strict safety standard. The latter demands materials to have good thermal properties and significantly improved fire retardant property. In this research, multifunctional materials with layered structures are made from polyester resin, glass fiber mats and carbon nanofibers (CNFs). CNFs are added to the resin component of the composite laminates as additives in pulverised form and carbon nanofiber paper sheets (CNFS), respectively. Their flammability behaviors are investigated with cone calorimeter under well-controlled combustion conditions. And their heat release rate and other test parameters are compared and discussed, such as ignition time, heat release rate (HRR), peak heat release rate (PHRR), and so on. Although its PHRR is sharply increased to higher level for CNFS enforced composite laminates, its HRR curve is lowered greatly in most flaming time. Therefore, the pre-incorporated CNFS may act as an excellent insulator and mass transport barrier, improving the flame retardant property.

Abstract:
The primary role of rolling oil in cold rolling is to reduce friction at the rubbing interface of the work roll and metal sheet surface. The rolling performance as well as cost effectiveness of rolled products is influenced by quality of the rolling oil. Lubricants are required to function under increasingly stressful operating conditions, so it is a challenge to evaluate the product under simulated conditions to improve the customer confidence in its performance. A steel rolling mill customer had requested us to develop a rolling oil to roll stainless steel in a new 3-stand 18-high rolling mill and demonstrate its performance on an experimental set up. The present paper describes the methodology adopted to assess the suitability of a rolling oil for the particular rolling mill. The screening was carried out with a SRV (Schwingungs Reibungs und Verschleisstest, meaning Vibration, friction and Abrasion) tribometer and EHD (Elasto-hydrodynamic) interferometry based film thickness apparatus to assess the frictional and film forming characteristics of the oil under simulated operating conditions. In addition, simulated tests were carried out on a laboratory 2-Hi Experimental rolling mill to find out the specific roll force (rolling force per unit width of the strip being rolled) required to obtain 55–60% cumulative reduction in three passes as desired by the customer for different grades of stainless steel. Based on results obtained in the laboratory mill simulating industrial test conditions, the product was recommended and was accepted by the customer for use in their rolling mill.
