Abstract:
The paper makes a discursive analysis of the news value construction in the headlines of new media news. The data chosen is 59 news headlines on coverage of Zimbabwe Crisis released in the apps of BBC from November 6th to November 18th 2017. The data indicates a chronological variance of the news values in the headlines. Specifically, eliteness and negativity are values constantly occurring in the headlines throughout the crisis report. The value of positivity appears only at the final stage of the news coverage. The value of timeliness emerges at the final four days of the news coverage. The value of suspense appears at the middle stage of the event. The value of proximity is employed when the detention just occurred. In terms of the linguistic realization of those news values, the study finds that the frequent use of some words contributed to the realization of news values. This study is important in that it reveals how language resources are used by newsmakers to construct news value in the headlines and how news values are realized in the context of communication.

Abstract:
Comments on social media provide a suitable site to view text-reader relations from the perspective of news reading. This article interrogates readers’ evaluative responses to Weibo shared news in China. The study, drawing upon Discursive News Values Analysis and appraisal, first identifies the news values of Eliteness, Personalization, Negativity and Positivity in a news story about car quality sourced from the Weibo network of People’s Daily. Then the following 1027 comments, including Chinese characters and emojis, are investigated by using a mixed-methods approach. The corpus analysis shows that business Eliteness (the Mercedes dealership) and Personalization (the buyer) are convergently valued news actors, while readers evaluate authoritative Eliteness (the Bureau) in an unexpected way. Close examination of the appraisal devices in the comments uncovers a divergence between negative judgment toward Eliteness and positive affect/judgment for Personalization. Emojis play an important role in activating attitudes through the interplay with language. In commentary journalism, the readers’ response can influence news value decisions when there is a mismatch between the news values promoted by news organizations and the values that readers perceive as newsworthy.

This case study examines how editors select stories for a Chinese-language publication’s WeChat public account. Results of a content analysis between May and August 2014 indicate that editors do not strictly rely on established news values to select WeChat stories. News categories better predict story decisions. Furthermore, news-category priorities identified in interviews with editors closely match what readers want to see.

Purpose and framing of the question: To study how Aftonbladet’s news values and news selection have changed in the last two decades. Method and material: Quantitative study in form of a coding scheme covering Aftonbladet’s front pages in the month of march of 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2015. Main result: Both news selection and news value remains in the bigger perspective unchanged, indicating that the newspaper print version is rather unaffected by the change of online journalism. That in turn indicates that the gatekeeper role more or less remains the same for the print version of Aftonbladet.

Abstract:
This study analyses the construction and cultural effects of news values in the discourse of British and Japanese television news. This cross-cultural comparative study seek to clarify how public service broadcasting in each country forms values in television news items, and how culture and society are related to language in the news discourse in each nation. This study is based on the notion that the language of news does not reflect the intrinsic importance of the events which are reported. Rather, every element in the discourse of television news is selected by newsmakers according to their particular criteria: news values, which can be defined by features of a news event judged by newsmakers to be significant to the audience. This study also considers that news values are ideological structures that are socially and culturally constructed. This thesis develops a multi-dimensional framework for analysing the discourse of both British and Japanese television news. The framework consists of different levels of elements, including content (commentary; selection of information), discourse organisational structure (rhetorical features; textual relationship), the use of language (the arrangement of lexical items; syntax) and non-linguistic strategies (visual elements; iconography).

Abstract:
News value assessment has been done forever in the news media industry and is today often done in real-time without any documentation. Editors take a lot of different qualitative aspects into consideration when deciding what news stories will make it to the first page. This thesis explores how the complex news value assessment process can be translated into a quantitative model, and also how those news values can be predicted in an effective way using machine learning and NLP. Two models for news value were constructed, for which the correlation between modeled and manual news values was measured, and the results show that the more complex model gives a higher correlation. For prediction, different types of features are extracted, Random Forest and SVM are used, and the predictions are evaluated with accuracy, F1-score, RMSE, and MAE. Random Forest shows the best results for all metrics on all datasets, the best result being on the largest dataset, probably due to the smaller datasets having a less even distribution between classes.

Abstract:
Background: Science journalism is essential for keeping citizens of democracies informed and educated, this is part of the public service concept. However, some authors assume much arbitrariness of selectivity mark science news as a peculiar journalistic genre. This study investigates how science news are valued alongside general news in swedish public service programme Rapport. Method: The science features from two years of prime time broadcasts of Rapport was analyzed quantitatively by means of content analysis. Results: Studies with some connection to Sweden, a ”human angle”, emphasizing health risk, seems most likely to be covered. Conclusions: Put into context, the results was interpreted as invalid in some respects that support the conjecture of the peculiar nature of science news. The findings therefore suggest that news value theory needs special revision to account for newsworthiness in science.

Title: Where does the news that you read in your localpaper come from? (Vilket ursprung har nyheten som du läser i din lokaltidning?)

Number of pages: 45 (57 including enclosures)

Author: Elin Rantakokko

Tutor: Göran Svensson

Course: Media and Communication Studies 30 hp

Period: Fall of 2007 University: Division of Media and Communication, Department of Information Science, Uppsala University Purpose/Aim: This paper has the aim to make a systematic survey of the information source and channels that local newspapers use. How much space they get in the paper and how the newspaper works with these sources and channels. The front pages of the newspaper are going to be compared with the insides of the newspaper. The reports roles in the making of news are also examined.

Material/method: To be able to answer my questions I’m going to use three different methods. An observation on the papers morning meetings, an quantitative content analysis of five numbers of an local paper and four interviews with two news managers and two reporters on the paper.

Main results: The paper makes most of the news by them as well as them receives many of the tip-offs from private persons. These are ranked as news that cost a lot of money to make for the paper. In the paper internal and external sources get a half each. The local paper have many information channels that the public can use to tip the paper. The two channels that are used the most are e-mailing and the telephone. The front pages of the newspaper indicate very well on the material in the inside of the newspaper. The reports does not come with own ideas as much as they would like to, they mean that the most ideas for articles comes during another job.

Keywords: Local newspapers, information channels, information source, news value, news gathering, news institution.

Abstract:
With the increase in the number of small investors in the Brazilian stock market, public information increases its influence over expectations and, consequently, over the value of determined stocks traded in this market. In this context, an event study can identify irregularities caused by imperfections in the dissemination of information, and their effects on the stock market. This project analyzes, using an event study, the impact of articles published on the front page of the Valor Econômico newspaper on the value of the stocks involved in those articles. The comparison of the returns of those stocks before and after the event was performed, aiming at identifying biases that could demonstrate or not the strength of the information issued.

Abstract:
The purpose with this study is to examine how the media coverage of the train accidentoutside Kimstad, on the night of September 12th 2010, was framed in one local (Norrköpingsnyheter) and one national newspaper (Expressen) and how the coverage of the accident wasdifferent in the local newspaper compared to the national newspaper. The material is 12 articles within a fixed time limit which is from September 13th toSeptember 15th. The material consists of six articles from each newspaper. The method we use a qualitative text analysis with its basis in medialogic, news value andframing theory. In the essay’s analysis we show a synthesis of both newspapers coverage of the train accidentoutside Kimstad and how they stand in relation to the theory of news value and we end with aterminative comment about the results. The conclusion shows that the coverage of the event was different in many ways. Expressenuses a more dramatic framing and a more sensational language which describes the eventmore badly than it was. NT uses a more informative and objective information which almosttrifles the event but which informs about relevant information for the locals. Expressen mostlyturns to civil persons and the passengers on the train for quotes while NT turns to governmentpeople and cites them. Expressen also used personalization more than NT, but NT simplifiedtheir stories more than Expressen. We could also see that the crisis could be marked by the definitions of a crisis made byUlmer, Sellnow & Seeger. We could also relate the crisis event to the coverage of the crisis. They were both short and sudden.Earlier research has shown that national newspapers have a tendency to dramatize news morethan what local newspapers do.

Abstract:
Abstract Early production of gas reservoirs is usually associated with a volumetric gas driving mechanism with no water production. Aquifer activity is minimal as well during the early life of the reservoir. In this paper, we will discuss about the good engineering practices based on several shut-in pressure data to observe and maximize marginal gas field value. We will also discuss about the possibility of water drive behavior in this field. Shut-in pressure data plays an important role in determining the in-place and reservoir dynamics of the gas reservoir. High shut-in pressure usually indicates high gas reserves. On the other hand, it shows a very strong water drive existence. The study takes place on a sandstone gas reservoir with an abnormal pressure regime on it. Production performance was then analyzed using the rate transient analysis (RTA) to determine its properties and gas in place and crosschecked with shut-in pressure data. From these steps, we can determine the trend of both static and flowing material balance (FMB) analysis to predict the reservoir dynamics. During the early life of production, it is clear that volumetric reservoir plays an important role in the reservoir dynamics since it produces no reservoir water. However, after 1 year of production, it starts to produce reservoir water. Monitoring starts when the first shut-in pressure shows a quite unexpected value. It puts a sense of both high gas reserves and aquifer activity. After applying all the pressure and production data on FMB and p/Z plot, it shows that both high gas reserves and aquifer activity exist in this field. The results of this study change the development strategy of this field, preventing doing major investment on high capital expenditure (CAPEX) with low results due to high aquifer activity. We can conclude that good reservoir monitoring and analysis combining several analytical methods can enhance our insight into reservoir dynamics. Combining FMB and p/Z, geologist starts to compare aquifer volume based on geological data and found to be similar with the results coming from analytical data. 3D reservoir simulation also confirms similar results based on those analyses.

Abstract:
Since the early nineteenth century, cacao has been an important export earner for Ecuador. Today the importance of this sector remains, as Ecuador is the main producer and exporter of Fine and Flavor cacao worldwide. Motivated by the main transformations of the global food systems and the increasing demand for multidimensional credence attributes, this study examines the present state of Ecuador's cacao industry, identifies areas of opportunity, and discusses how the private and public sectors can work together to meet existing and emerging challenges. Findings are supported by interviews conducted with the principal actors in the Ecuadorian cacao industry and two case studies. The first case study focuses on how associativity can help cacao farmers producing high-quality beans to differentiate themselves and succeed in modern agri-food markets. The second case study explores the success of a local chocolate firm and its links with local cacao farmers. Findings suggest that market trends have created new business opportunities for cacao producers and chocolate processors. These opportunities are most open to firms who can personalize and differentiate their products, for example, through the use of quality certifications such as organic, fair trade, reduced carbon load, etc. More importantly, market developments are driving exporters to enhance the performance of cacao value chains in the country, but the sector requires coordination to capture reputation and credence-based demands for the local cacao.

Abstract:
In this paper we examine the main transformations that are affecting European automotive industry and which challenges, in particular due to the transition to new forms of propulsion, the industry is going to face. The automotive industry is central to the European economy and the nature of the Global Value Chains are rapidly shifting. While individual countries have developed economic plans to address this, a broader EU wide plan is critically important to addressing the employment and environmental effects of these shifts.
