Abstract:
Purpose and framing of the question: To study how Aftonbladet’s news values and news selection have changed in the last two decades. Method and material: Quantitative study in form of a coding scheme covering Aftonbladet’s front pages in the month of march of 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2015. Main result: Both news selection and news value remains in the bigger perspective unchanged, indicating that the newspaper print version is rather unaffected by the change of online journalism. That in turn indicates that the gatekeeper role more or less remains the same for the print version of Aftonbladet.

Abstract:
This study analyses the construction and cultural effects of news values in the discourse of British and Japanese television news. This cross-cultural comparative study seek to clarify how public service broadcasting in each country forms values in television news items, and how culture and society are related to language in the news discourse in each nation. This study is based on the notion that the language of news does not reflect the intrinsic importance of the events which are reported. Rather, every element in the discourse of television news is selected by newsmakers according to their particular criteria: news values, which can be defined by features of a news event judged by newsmakers to be significant to the audience. This study also considers that news values are ideological structures that are socially and culturally constructed. This thesis develops a multi-dimensional framework for analysing the discourse of both British and Japanese television news. The framework consists of different levels of elements, including content (commentary; selection of information), discourse organisational structure (rhetorical features; textual relationship), the use of language (the arrangement of lexical items; syntax) and non-linguistic strategies (visual elements; iconography).

Abstract:
News value assessment has been done forever in the news media industry and is today often done in real-time without any documentation. Editors take a lot of different qualitative aspects into consideration when deciding what news stories will make it to the first page. This thesis explores how the complex news value assessment process can be translated into a quantitative model, and also how those news values can be predicted in an effective way using machine learning and NLP. Two models for news value were constructed, for which the correlation between modeled and manual news values was measured, and the results show that the more complex model gives a higher correlation. For prediction, different types of features are extracted, Random Forest and SVM are used, and the predictions are evaluated with accuracy, F1-score, RMSE, and MAE. Random Forest shows the best results for all metrics on all datasets, the best result being on the largest dataset, probably due to the smaller datasets having a less even distribution between classes.

Background: Science journalism is essential for keeping citizens of democracies informed and educated, this is part of the public service concept. However, some authors assume much arbitrariness of selectivity mark science news as a peculiar journalistic genre. This study investigates how science news are valued alongside general news in swedish public service programme Rapport. Method: The science features from two years of prime time broadcasts of Rapport was analyzed quantitatively by means of content analysis. Results: Studies with some connection to Sweden, a ”human angle”, emphasizing health risk, seems most likely to be covered. Conclusions: Put into context, the results was interpreted as invalid in some respects that support the conjecture of the peculiar nature of science news. The findings therefore suggest that news value theory needs special revision to account for newsworthiness in science.

How much space they get in the paper and how the newspaper works with these sources and channels. The front pages of the newspaper are going to be compared with the insides of the newspaper. The reports roles in the making of news are also examined.

Material/method: To be able to answer my questions I’m going to use three different methods. An observation on the papers morning meetings, an quantitative content analysis of five numbers of an local paper and four interviews with two news managers and two reporters on the paper.

Main results: The paper makes most of the news by them as well as them receives many of the tip-offs from private persons. These are ranked as news that cost a lot of money to make for the paper. In the paper internal and external sources get a half each. The local paper have many information channels that the public can use to tip the paper. The two channels that are used the most are e-mailing and the telephone. The front pages of the newspaper indicate very well on the material in the inside of the newspaper. The reports does not come with own ideas as much as they would like to, they mean that the most ideas for articles comes during another job.

Abstract:
With the increase in the number of small investors in the Brazilian stock market, public information increases its influence over expectations and, consequently, over the value of determined stocks traded in this market. In this context, an event study can identify irregularities caused by imperfections in the dissemination of information, and their effects on the stock market. This project analyzes, using an event study, the impact of articles published on the front page of the Valor Econômico newspaper on the value of the stocks involved in those articles. The comparison of the returns of those stocks before and after the event was performed, aiming at identifying biases that could demonstrate or not the strength of the information issued.

The purpose with this study is to examine how the media coverage of the train accidentoutside Kimstad, on the night of September 12th 2010, was framed in one local (Norrköpingsnyheter) and one national newspaper (Expressen) and how the coverage of the accident wasdifferent in the local newspaper compared to the national newspaper. The material is 12 articles within a fixed time limit which is from September 13th toSeptember 15th. The material consists of six articles from each newspaper. The method we use a qualitative text analysis with its basis in medialogic, news value andframing theory. In the essay’s analysis we show a synthesis of both newspapers coverage of the train accidentoutside Kimstad and how they stand in relation to the theory of news value and we end with aterminative comment about the results. The conclusion shows that the coverage of the event was different in many ways. Expressenuses a more dramatic framing and a more sensational language which describes the eventmore badly than it was. NT uses a more informative and objective information which almosttrifles the event but which informs about relevant information for the locals. Expressen mostlyturns to civil persons and the passengers on the train for quotes while NT turns to governmentpeople and cites them. Expressen also used personalization more than NT, but NT simplifiedtheir stories more than Expressen. We could also see that the crisis could be marked by the definitions of a crisis made byUlmer, Sellnow & Seeger. We could also relate the crisis event to the coverage of the crisis. They were both short and sudden.Earlier research has shown that national newspapers have a tendency to dramatize news morethan what local newspapers do.

Author: Camilla Andersson Title: The depiction of female and male elite soccer players in Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter –  A quantitative and discursive analysis of the World Cup 2002 and 2003 Level of education: C Subject: Media and Communication Studies Umeå University: Department of Culture and Media Studies Term: Spring 2004 Pages: 70   The purpose of this essay is that from a gender theoretical and critical discourse analysis perspective  study how the image of the Swedish football national teams and players in the 2002 World Cup (men) and 2003 (women) were constructed in the media coverage. I analyze articles published in Dagens Nyheter, Swedens biggest morningpaper and Aftonbladet, biggest eveningpaper. The method is based on a quantitative content analysis, and critical discourse analysis in which I use van Dijk's analytical approach.   Issues : 1. What constructed the World Cup in 2002 and 2003  players and teams, from a gender theoretical perspective in the mediatexts? 2. Can the constructions in question 1 (with respect to the World Cup, players and teams ) be attributed to a specific gender discourse and how can they then be explained from a discursive perspective?   Both the content analysis and critical discourse analysis points to significant differences in the attention value of the World Cup in 2002 and 2002.   • It differs in structure / presentation of the actual event where mens World Cup is constructed as a dramatic and historically important event. It has an impact on all pages in the paper: debate  culture, news sites as well on the sports pages. Articles about the female players are more concentrated on the sports pages. • The difference in the portrayal of the fotball players. The portraits of the men are elaborate and well researched. The portraits of the women are much thinner, more of haste. The male practitioner depicted additionally as potent and purposeful and may control the narrative about himself. The image of the female practitioner will be that she "corrects herself nicely " after the reporter team. Women players are also asked to comment on other events, for instance the men´s competition, than the direct cause of the text that should be a portrait of the female player. They are also compared to male players . There are also some cases of differences in language use with a tendency to reduction of the female player. Important to remember, however, is that this is only a small number of texts that have been analyzed. Remarkable, however, are the results from the content analysis that there is much greater focus on the team when it comes to the ladies, and more focus on individuals when the men are described . • The difference in the quality of production with respect to the number of articles , number of writers and in the construction of the articles. The number of articles is on average 5 times as many during the 2002 World Cup about Swedish national team (men) compared to the VM 2003 and the women's national team. Articles are also backed up in a greater extent by the factfile, tables and general articles relating to the World Cup. For the ladies it does not exist the same editorial back-up to lift the event to a few levels higher in readers' rankings. Here the focus is most of the game situation and to the team.   Attention value is higher for men, not only in terms of quantity but also in terms of where the texts are published. It is clear that in the material there is a dominance and importance discourse connected to gender in the surveillance of the World Cup.   Keywords: Mass Communication, Gender, Sport, Daily News Paper, World Cup, Attention Value

Abstract:
Paywalls have quickly become a large part of the media industry and are constantly evolving. Most news media today use a form of paywall to be able to earn revenue off their content. In this study we have made a qualitative text analysis where we compared themes between COVID-19 articles behind paywalls and articles which are free to read on Aftonbladet and Expressen. By using theories concerning news value, news selection and media logic, we were able to examine what kind of themes we could find in the articles placed behind paywalls and compare that to the articles that is free to read.   The results showed that there were more differences than similarities between the content that is placed behind paywalls and the content that is free to read on Aftonbladet and Expressen. When the articles were free to read, they frequently had content that focused on the simplification of information from the authorities, calming articles where experts are not worried and articles about the individuals and their role in a crisis. For the articles that were placed behind paywalls, clickbait captions were more frequently used, probably because of a financial aspect. Most of the articles that were placed behind paywalls had a negative tone where words such as death, panic and worry were involved. According to this result, we came to the conclusion that the articles in the analyzed online newspapers have two different media logics: one for the news that is placed behind paywalls and one for the news that is free to read.

Abstract

Title: Foreign news coverage. Does the media influence the action in international crises? (Utrikesbevakning. Påverkar media agerandet i internationella kriser?)

Number of pages: 39

Author: Charlotta Andrésson

Tutor: Professor Lowe Hedman

Course: Media and Communication Studies C

University: Division of Media and Communication, Department of Information Science, Uppsala University.

Date of submission: 2007-01-03, autumn term of 2006

Purpose/Aim

The purpose of the essay is partly to examine if foreign news coverage influence the political agenda setting and the incentives of the public’s willingness to give charity for humanitarian crises. It is also to answer if the media are responsible for the possible consequences of the news coverage. My main questions at issue are:

1. Does the foreign news coverage influence the political agenda setting and the incentives of the public’s willingness to give charity for humanitarian crises?

2. Is media responsible for the possible consequences of their foreign news coverage?

I also ask a question at issue in a research of Swedish foreign news coverage in my essay to get a clearer picture of the foreign news coverage:

3. How does Swedish foreign news coverage relate to prior research?

Method:

The second chapter of the essay is a literature research of news selection and news values. The third chapter of the essay is a research of media’s influence on the world politics and humanitarian aid. These two chapters are literature studies based on prior research, theories and debates. The fourth chapter is an empirical study of a news programme on a Swedish TV-channel during a five months period between 2004 and 2005. My interest in the empirical study was to examine how the material was divided geographically and as regards contents. The fifth and sixth chapter of the essay consists of an analysis and a discussion.

Main results:

As my main result I concluded that the media influence the political agenda setting and the the incentives of the public’s willingness to give charity for humanitarian crises. The media throw light upon which crises that should be given priority to. The theories for news selection and news value agrees with the result of my research of Swedish foreign news coverage. I also concluded that the media alone was not responsible for the possible consequences for their foreign news coverage but that they are the premier channel of information about the world for most people.

Abstract:
The same digital forces that are changing the Communications, Information, Media and Entertainment industries in general are radically changing newspaper companies in particular by changing their value chain. Newspapers are seeing their dominance erode when Internet and digitization are fundamentally changing and disrupting their traditional business models.  There is a clear collectively decline in news consumption, and with that the news organizations’ roles in society are changing. Moreover, the reduced consumption of news puts pressure on the newspaper’s economy with shrinking revenues and increasing costs. The transformation of the newspaper into a purely digital business has been in progress under the past decade and it is rapidly accelerating.   The subscribers of the printed morning newspaper have historically been characterized by a high degree of loyalty and engagement as well as a low price sensitivity. They constitute an attractive group for the newspaper to keep as digital subscribers in a possible future situation where the printed newspaper no longer can be provided.  Thus, the purpose of this study is to find out to what extent the studied newspaper company can rely on the existing print subscribers to stay as digital subscribers and count them as a stable resource, that is as a part of the future digital subscription revenues.

This paper was written to promote better understanding of the environmental news value in local television news, once it has long been treated as a supporting subject. The sources for the study were news reports from the television news ABTV (2nd edition) at TV Asa Branca (the Rede Globo affiliate in Caruaru / PE) and interviews with the professionals in charge of producing and editing them. As well as writers such as Traquina (2005), Vizeu (2005, 2008, 2009), Dias (2003) Cox (2010), Guerra (2014), Berger and Luckman (1985), McCombs (2009) and Tuchman (1983). Quantitative and qualitative analyses were used to find out how the television news deal with environmental issues and if the journalists see the news as a tool to promote environmental education among the viewers. In our analysis, we see that the environmental issues were considered as light news, normally used to shut down the television news, or for the last blocks. Also realized the loss of space theme to other matters in the television news’ mirror

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to examine which effect tabloidization has had on the news content and the presentation of the Swedish news program Rapport, during the years 1979 and 2009. Rapport is broadcasted in the Public Service channel "Sveriges Television".

Our main concern was to examine whether Rapport has stayed true to their assignment or if they have made changes to appeal to the popularised audience. To do so we focused on three questions: What is the journalist’s role? What becomes news? Who are interviewed?

We used theories such as social representation, news value and media logic to help us perform the analysis. Qualitative methods were used to analyse the news broadcasts, of which John Langer’s story-types was the primary method. In addition to that we used the method of semiotics to reveal signs of tabloidization in the imagery of the broadcasts.

Our results showed that the tabloidization of Rapport lies in the format rather than the news content. The changes in the news content are barely noticeable, even though the time span is quite long. The format however, has seen some tabloidization in 2009, with changes to the vignette and the feature structure. We also found changes in which people that Rapport chose to interview and changes among the journalists themselves. For instance we discovered that the representation of different groups of people is much more varied in 2009 than it was in 1979. The results also showed that the journalistic role has shifted from the task of educating the citizens to the task of being sensational and entertaining.

Abstract:
We live in a world where technology and especially digital communications are rapidly evolving, but we rarely think about how or what this development affects. The aim of this bachelor study was to examine whether any differences in news value could be found between the digital and printed versions of a local newspaper, Kristianstadsbladet, as well as the causes for such differences. Using the quantitative method, we coded all 1,230 local news articles (585 printed and 645 digital) from Kristianstadsbladet’s printed paper and website versions, from 2019-11-11 to 2019-11-29, with excluding days of Saturday’s and Sunday’s. Our results showed that our main hypothesis did not quite agree with our results since news value was largely the same on both platforms. Kristianstadsbladet published the same amount of subject categorys in percentage terms, except the subject “Lifestyle” which got more space on their website than in their printed paper. We also concluded that digitalization of mass media is one of the biggest reasons for Kristianstadsbladet to publish the same local news on both their platforms due to modern technology.

Abstract:
This Master’s thesis investigates the matter of relations as a contributing factor to foreign audiences’ interest in, and interpretation of, news events. An explorative designed quantitative study is conducted based on the example of the terrorist attacks in Norway, 2011. First, a questionnaire was created and shared online with audiences from 53 different countries, with the target group of members of the international exchange student organization Youth For Understanding. 318 responses were collected and analysed in SPSS and the thesis then analyses behavioural-, knowledge- and attitude responses through a quantitative content analysis. The findings are discussed in relation to earlier research on news value, psychology, global compassion and cultural studies.   In the results, it is found that foreign audiences’ relationships to the affected foreign country matter to a large extent, both seen to personal relationships such as having friends or family in or around Norway; but also features such as the respondents’ ability to identify with, and relate to, the news. The survey results show that a relation to Norway contributes to more in-depth knowledge and a higher interest rate in the news about the terrorist attacks, and also how relations to Norway affected the respondents’ cognitive and emotive memories of the event. The author recommends further studies with news examples tested on other, larger populations in order to reach a more reliable, valid and generalizable result.

Abstract:

The present research seeks to analyze the changes that involve the newsworthiness criteria in the environment of online journalism from a now bigger participation of the public via social networking sites. To do so, it is used a comparative of parameters between journalists and the public. While taking as a measure of the journalist's values the headlines of the cover of the sites of the Correio do Povo and Folha de S. Paulo, is based on the most shared news by the public from the official profiles of the two communication vehicles on social network sites Facebook and Twitter. As a methodology, it is used interviews with site managers, observation and the creation of data collection mechanisms that allows the comparison through four variables: presence of editorials, position on the page, presence of news-values and presence of detailed news-values. It is verified that in the majority of the cases analyzed here there is consonance between the journalist and the public in relation to the criteria of importance, but it is attentive to the importance of the differences, also essential in the process, suggesting that the issue should not be summarized to one or the another.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to explore how the Black Lives Matter movement was constructed on Instagram by American television channels the week after George Floyd was killed. The purpose was to answer the following questions; (1) What proportion of the posts were dedicated to the Black Lives Matter movement during the chosen week? (2) How was George Floyd and Derek Chauvin portrayed on the media ́s Instagram? (3) What words and images were used to describe the Black Lives Matter movement? (4) What similarities and differences can be found between the channels ́ portrayals of the Black Lives Matter movement? The approach chosen was a multi-method research, thus using a both qualitative and quantitative design. Based on this method 112 Instagram posts uploaded between May 27th and June 2nd, 2020 were analyzed. CNN, Fox News and MSNBC are the largest news channels in the United States and therefore chosen for this study. Our study concluded that the overall presentation of the Black Lives Matter movement was positive, in terms of the total reporting from all three channels. Observing the channels separately, CNN and MSNBC mostly portrayed it positively, while Fox News mostly negatively. According to our analysis, the reason why the posts could be perceived in this way was based on the words used and images displayed. The words death, looter, and violence provided a negative understanding of the situation. Whereas the words such as loving, solidarity and freedom created a positive appearance. Overall the study found that the proportion of reporting on Black Lives Matter was vast in comparison to other news stories on all three channels. However, one of the substantial differences between them was the portrayal of the offender Derek Chauvin and the victim George Floyd.

Abstract:
Ice hockey is seen as a rough sport. Sometimes situations tend to become too violent and players now and then get suspended for their acts on the ice. In very unusual cases the legal system has been forced to step in and prosecute players for situations on the ice. This is the case with Jakob Lilja. The purpose of this essay is therefore to seek answers on how two Swedish tabloids have framed Lilja and how the news coverage has changed during this time. The theory used in the study makes it possible to highlight how Lilja has been framed in the tabloids and it also gives the study the opportunity to further explain how Lilja has been portrayed. The scientific method used in this study has been a critical discourse analysis to be able to study the 43 articles included in the analysis in a qualitative manner. The study shows that the news coverage from the case has changed during the course of the time. The early coverage shows the framing of Lilja as an ice hockey player while the latter coverage more frame him as a criminal. But there are differences. The different tabloids have framed the case in different ways and the study shows that one of them has framed Lilja more than the other.

Abstract:
In October 2017, the actor Alyssa Milano announced a wish that all women who, in some way, have been sexually abused would answer their tweets with the words "me too". Almost a day later, #metoo breaks into Swedish social media. There are testimonies of countless of sexual harassments and abuse both from known, unknown and anonymous women who testify to the breadth of the major problem that came to be resembled as a revolution within the next few days. During the news reporting in connection with the campaign we discovered how the Swedish media generally showed differences in how suspected offenders were portrayed in the media. Using formulated analysis tools dramaturgical narrative techniques and criteria for newsworthiness from theories of media logic and theories of news value, we aim to investigate how one of the largest newspapers in Sweden, Expressen, choose to figure suspected perpetrators into sexual offenses in the context of the #metoo campaign. Our main research question is; “How do suspected offenders appear in Expressen's reporting of #metoo in relation to certain dramaturgic narrative techniques?” and “How are some suspects perpetrated in Expressen's reporting of #metoo in relation to certain news value criteria?” With a qualitative content analysis we examined a total of 20 articles and identified results that indicate that the suspected perpetrators according to our interpretation are expressed in the Expressens news reporting in such a way that they are to be perceived as guilty to the crime they're accused for. By identifying our chosen news value criteria in the empirical material which our study is based on, our interpretation is that there's a high news value of reporting suspected offenders in context of the #metoo campaign. The result of our study aims at contributing knowledge about how suspicious perpetrators are portrayed in cases of crime in the media. During our literature review, we found that the research previously conducted on media and crime is primarily about how the victim is portrayed in the media. With our study we want to contribute to the knowledge of how suspected perpetrators are portrayed, which can raise the awareness of how the media through different dramatic storytelling techniques and news evaluation criteria can shape news in different ways.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is, from a journalistic perspective, to examine how the Swedish newspapers reported and presented Ikea and the knife attack that took place at the company's department store in Västerås, Sweden, on August 10, 2015. Eight news articles from the websites of the Swedish newspapers Aftonbladet and Expressen have been analyzed. Using a qualitative content analysis with a hermeneutic strategy the news articles has been analyzed in detail by their main headlines, leads, intermediate headlines and body texts. The News Value theory and the Media Dramaturgy of the Media Logic theory were used as analytic tools for this study. The result shows that the Swedish newspapers reported about the knife attack at Ikea by fulfilling seven out of eight news criterias from the News Value theory. The news reports presented, among other things, cultural and geographical proximity between the event and the audience. The news reports were also focused on how witnesses (including Ikeas staff) experienced the knife attack, and how Ikea took action after the event. Another result shows that the Media Logic Dramaturgy portrayed Ikea as another victim in the context of the event, since Ikea was portrayed as shocked and empathic. The knife attack was portrayed as unpredictable and shocking. Based on the results, one conclusion is that the unique and shocking knife attack at Ikea were newsworthy and therefore appraised as an interesting event for the audience to read about. Ikea was not presented in a critical way because Ikea acted empathetic and responsible immediately after the event.

Historically, incumbent assembly firms with unquestionable strong positions in such industries as the automobile, consumer electronics, computer and mobile phone industries, have lost power when new technology is introduced; at the same time, supplier firms have taken over the power and gained value in the industry. We characterize this phenomenon as value-shift. Many industry experts have intuitive understandings of this phenomenon but not many scholars have identified its mechanism with a full-fledged theory. This paper identifies a mechanism that causes value-shift within the TV set industry, suggesting its application to other industries. This thesis then proposes a clear spectrum of strategies for incumbent assembly firms to prevent value-shift. At the same time, it indicates a set of strategies for supplier firms to take over the industry leadership. The work firstly defines value-shift and presents evidences that it exists in various industries by calculating the transition of value-added. By quantifying the impact of the value shift with this calculation, the thesis urges incumbent firms to take immediate actions to defy the value-shift. Then the thesis closely examines recent technology transition from the Cathode Ray Tube to the Liquid Crystal Display and describes how the value-shift took place in the TV set industry. From this industry analysis, the thesis describes the mechanism of the value-shift and discussed the possible strategies that incumbent firms could use to maintain their power over the industry. Finally, the thesis suggests the generalized mechanism of value-shift as an evolution in four stages using the modularity theory. The thesis implies the proposed mechanism is generally applicable by citing examples from other industries and suggests possible actions for both parties: for the incumbent firms to defy the value-shift and for the supplier firms to obtain industry leadership.

Lins, De Holanda Coelho Gabriel. "Which values are similar? : introducing new methodologies to map the structure of human values and value-expressive behaviours." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2018. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/117637/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research provides the first direct assessment of human values and value-expressive behaviours based on their conceptual meaning. Chapter 1 provides a brief history of the study of human values and dissects the dominant contemporary theory of values, the Theory of Basic Human Values, proposed by Shalom Schwartz. I also discuss methodological approaches used to assess the structure of human values, and the nature of concepts and categorization. In Chapter 2, seven studies containing data from nine samples in two countries (United Kingdom and Brazil) asked participants to compare the meaning of different values found within Schwartz’s influential quasi-circumplex model of values. Different methods were used across the studies, including direct similarity judgment tasks, pile sorting, and spatial arrangement. The results of these diverse conceptual assessments corresponded to spatial configurations that are broadly convergent with Schwartz’s model, both between and within participants. In Chapter 3, four studies were conducted using British samples, asking participants to make direct comparisons between value-expressive behaviours and different levels of mental representations of values (e.g., value types, higher order values). Some of the methods used in Chapter 2 were also used for these studies. It was an open question whether the structure from Schwartz’s value model would be replicated by the spatial plane composed of value-expressive behaviours. The spatial configurations from these studies broadly converged with Schwartz's structure, and also provided a novel point of view of how values and behaviours are related based on how people interpret them. Finally, in Chapter 4, I discuss the contributions of this research, its implications, limitations, and future directions.

Abstract:
The essay examines how the Swedish tabloid newspaper Aftonbladet portrays rape in their news reports. The rape cases that the study is going to analyze are rape that has occurred at festivals, delimited to Bråvallafestivalen 2016, as well as other cases of assault rape taking place during the summer of 2016. The study will also examine potential similarities and differences between the news reports of these two types of rape.By using theories such as Christie’s theory of the Ideal Victim, the Framing theory, the Dramaturgy of the Media Logic, and the News Value theory, in combination with a qualitative content analysis, the textual content of each article is analysed based upon five themes. These themes are how the headline and preamble are constructed, how the victim is portrayed, how the perpetrator is portrayed, how the environment is portrayed, and which other actors that are being mentioned as well as how they are being mentioned. The results of the thematic analysis shows that some differences do exist, when it comes to how Aftonbladet portrays rape at festivals in comparison to assault rape. By using less emotive words and more neutral descriptions in the articles about festival rape, the victims appear as less innocent, the perpetrators as more passive and aloof, while the environment could be perceived as less respectable, as compared to the articles about assault rape. This portrayal can be interpreted as normalizing the rapes that take place at festivals.

Abstract:
Over the past several decades, local governments have provided public services through a dynamic process including direct public delivery and market contracts. These public service delivery modes have been influenced by the dominant paradigms in contemporary public administration such as New Public Management (NPM) and Public Value Management (PVM). This study aims to examine factors influential in choosing public service delivery modes in local governments. Influential factors are divided into three main categories. The first category is public values as perceived by public managers. The second category is related to organizational environments. The third category is associated with characteristics of public services. This study focuses on public service delivery in County and City governments in Virginia. In order to test hypotheses, I use two sets of data: a survey and the U.S. Census. First, the survey measures public values, organizational environments, and public service characteristics. The survey population consists of 95 Counties and 39 Independent Cities in Virginia. The total number of County Administrators and City Managers who responded to the survey was 70. Second, the U.S. Census provides demographic information. In analyzing data to address research questions, I use descriptive analysis and a binary logistical regression model. Findings indicate that the more County Administrators and City Managers perceive the importance of efficiency and customer orientation values from New Public Management in determining public service delivery modes, the more local governments choose contracting out. In contrast, the more County Administrators and City Managers perceive the importance of fairness, political accountability, and employee safety values from Public Value Management in determining public service delivery modes, the more local governments choose delivery by public.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of the study has been to find the differences when it comes to source criticism for two different age groups, and to look into how they value news in digital and analogue media. Method – The pursuit of the study has been qualitative, where the methods interview and participant observation has been used to collect data. Findings – The results of the study show that there are no big differences when it comes to source criticism for the different age groups, but their ways of criticise sources varies. In the result you can clearly see that the faith in analogue media is larger thandigital media. Implications – Due to the fact that all the interviews took place in the same geographical area, Jönköping, the generalizability has been limited. Limitations – The limited time table for the study has inflicted on the result of the study.

Sizikova, Evelina. "Social Media- A New Instrument to Influence Brand Value." Master's thesis, Vysoká škola ekonomická v Praze, 2011. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-125069.

Full text
Abstract:
With the rising power of Internet and especially social media which includes different communities, blogs, portals(1) , etc., nowadays brand value, - its creation and control, is not in the hands of the companies anymore, but is shifted to the consumers. One aim of this paper is to investigate and try to prove the existence of social media influence on brand value. Another goal is to introduce a different vision of brand value in connection with Internet and the rise of social media's influence on consumer's minds. For the purpose of this research the terms brand value and brand equity would bear equal meanings. My theory, which I would like to introduce, was borrowed from biology and physics, namely from I.P. Pavlov's studies and his conditioned reflex theory(2) and the physics part is based on the dispersion of light theory which was first introduced, as we know, by Isaak Newton(3). I dare to say, that nowadays creation of brand value in consumer minds works the same way. When someone, man or woman, hears a brand name, a picture and a feeling, either positive or negative is immediately formed in the person's mind from personal experience with this brand. If not, then the brand is an unfamiliar one, thus we have to rely on a provided opinion, which was previously usually conveyed to us by family, relatives and close friends while recently, also by our growing virtual community. At the beginning of the thesis, I will present the theoretical background and data on World Wide Web and social media, followed by a concise description of some of the existing brand equity models, afterwards introducing my own vision on significant brand value components, elaborating on this theory with the help of relevant case studies and researches. Brand equity has generally been defined as "a brand's power derived from the goodwill and name recognition that it has earned over time, which translates into higher sales volume and higher profit margins against competing brands"(4). Further on in the second chapter I will bring together more definitions on brand equity/value to be able to propose a modified one, components of which will be discussed thoroughly in the same chapter. The main goal of my Master Thesis is to analyze the existence of a dependency between social media and brand value. A second goal is to assess whether the impact is a positive or a negative one or is a mixture of both.

Heger, Roland Helmut. "Value Measurement for New Product Category: a Conjoint Approach to Eliciting Value Structure." PDXScholar, 1996. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/1305.

Full text
Abstract:
Ability to measure value from the customer's point of view is central to the determination of market offerings: Customers will only buy the equivalent of perceived value, and companies can only offer benefits that cost less to provide than customers are willing to pay. Conjoint analysis is the most popular individual-level value measurement method to determine relative impact of product or service attributes on preferences and other dependent variables. This research focuses on how value measurement can be made more accurate and more reliable by measuring the relative influence of selected methodological variations on performance in prediction and on stability of value structure, and by grouping customers with similar value structure into segments which respond to product stimuli in a similar manner. Influences of the type of attributes included in the conjoint task, of the factorial design used to construct the product profiles, of the type and form of model, of the time of measurement, and of the type of cluster-based segmentation method, are evaluated. Data was gathered with a questionnaire that controlled for methodological variations, and with a notebook computer as the measurement object. One repeated measurement was taken. The study was conducted in two phases. In Phase I, influences of methodological variations on accuracy in prediction and on respective value structure were examined. In Phase II, different cluster-based segmentation methods--hierarchical clustering (HIC), non-hierarchical clustering (NHC), and fuzzy c-means clustering (FUC)--and according conjoint models were evaluated for their performance in prediction and in comparison with individual-level conjoint models. Results show the best models for a variety of design parameters are traditional individual-level, main-effects-only conjoint models. Neither modeling of interactions, nor segment-level conjoint models were able to improve on prediction. Best segment-level conjoint models were obtained with a fuzzy clustering method, worst models were obtained with k-means and the most fuzzy clustering approach. In conclusion, conjoint analysis reveals itself as a reliable method to measure individual customer value. It seems more rewarding for improvement of accuracy in prediction to apply repeated measures, or gather additional data about the respondent, than to attempt improvement on methodological variations with a single measurement.

Abstract:
Twenty-two United Methodist Church (UMC) editors Q-sorted fifty-four news stories in this research study. The concourse was constructed using six news values mainly used by editors and reporters in the commercial news media: conflict, impact, magnitude, prominence, novelty, and proximity. The stories were sorted along an eleven point bi-polar continuum from "most important" to "least important"The study revealed that two kinds of editor perceptions emerged in the UMC: the denominational editors who selected news stories based on the proximity news element, and the ecumenical editor, who selected news stories based on the news elements of magnitude, impact, and novelty.Despite the use of these news values, the study also showed that the environmental factors such as organizational policies of the UMC and the bishops, influenced story selection for publication.

O'Neill, Deirdre. "New values and selectivity in the construction of news : commentary on peer-reviewed published research articles." Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 2017. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/34426/.

Full text
Abstract:
This Commentary critically appraises my body of work over 15 years, the starting and end points being an exploration of the news values underlying the selection of news carried out 15 years apart, via various case study research articles that examine the type and quality of news that audiences receive. This body of work interrogates – from a range of perspectives – the ways in which some voices are privileged in the press, others are marginalised, while still others are absent in the news. I explore these issues from the perspective of the selection of news, through news values and source selection; how journalists develop those values and use sources to shape the news; the manner in which labour disputes are reported and trade union officials and members are legitimised or delegitimised; the extent to which celebrities are adopted and promoted in the news; how the views and achievements of women politicians are reported; and whether women have made headway in sports news, both in terms of the coverage of women athletes and in sports writing. The Commentary contextualises this body of work within both critical theoretical perspectives and rapid cultural, technical and social changes to situate the nine publications submitted for the degree to make clear the coherent nature of my inquiries. In this research I have maintained a contemporary analytical approach that suggests that the processes by which sources are chosen and news is selected undermines the plurality of voices in the press; that previous understandings of news values are outdated and that news values change over time and need to be revisited; that independent reporting is limited and a great deal of news relies on press subsidies with vested interests; and that ideological factors are frequently being played out in the news we receive. All of these findings have negative implications for the range and quality of our news. My findings have contributed to national and international debates about the news media, including an All-Party Parliamentary Report into Women in Parliament, challenged taken-for granted views about the news we receive and questioned the quality and bias of our news. The research has been disseminated nationally and internationally at leading conferences and in international journals and books, and in press articles, and is widely cited.

Abstract:

The understanding of value is often described in terms of an industrial view in which value creation is linear, additive process. The emerging view takes a different approach to value creation: it’s interactive, relationships-based and synchronic. But either of these views capture fully the value creating importance of elements present especially in converging industries: coopetition, networks and external relationships. This thesis has been conducted by gathering primary data from telecommunication industry companies in forms of interviews. The studied companies are engaged in numerous different kinds of external relationships and they are viewed as strategically important. Additionally, respondents believed that their companieswere part of a network but no clear illustration of it could be given. For the purpose of describing some of the complexity present, the value network -framework has been developed.

In the commercial industry, an investment in a new innovation can make or break a company. In order for the new innovation to succeed in a competitive marketplace, it must deliver value to its stakeholders. Companies are thus rewarded to assess the value an innovation will deliver to its customers early in the design process. This thesis provides a framework to measure the potential value a new innovation will deliver to consumers based on scoping the project. The framework provides details on creating a model based on the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) by establishing a hierarchy of customer objectives. The application of the framework is then applied to a large company developing two new innovations. Two interesting facts arose from the study. First, the value assessment model can be fractionated to evaluate how new products are valued by multiple market segments. A company can use this information to align a new innovation with a brand segmentation and develop an appropriate strategy to launch products. Secondly, this methodology has been shown to work on incremental innovation and non-traditional products which expand the customer base. The methodology does work when applied to radical innovation which overturns existing value structures and changes the market dynamics.

Full text
Abstract:
As one of the most enduring theories in communication, gatekeeping suggests that stories have to move from one gate to another gate before being published. During this process, some stories are selected, while others are rejected. Previous studies heavily focus on traditional news media and explore the influence of internal and external forces on story selection. Very few studies, however, look at gatekeeping in new areas of technology. This case study extends this literature into social media. It looks at how editors at The Asian Magazine (TAM) select stories for its WeChat public account. Interviews with editors identify news values and news categories that these gatekeepers think are important. Results of the WeChat content analysis between May and August 2014 indicate that TAM editors do not strictly rely on established news values to select WeChat stories. News categories better predict story decisions. Examining which WeChat items generate the most reader engagement gives evidence of how well news content matches what attracts readers online. News category priorities closely match what readers want to read.

Abstract:
In August 2010 an accident occurred in the San José mine in Chile. 33 miners were trapped in a shelter at a depth of 700 meters for over two months before they were rescued. The accident got a lot of media cover-age worldwide. In our study we have challenged the media logic by testing three news value theories from the content of aftonbladet.se:s and dn.se:s news articles regarding the mining accident. The newspapers were selected because they are the largest evening and morning newspaper in Sweden. We looked at which of the theories that best could be applied to the newspapers articles and also the differences between the newspa-pers' reporting from the perspective of the theories. The news value theories that we tested are from the theorists Håkan Hvitfelt, Tony Harcup & Deirdre O'Neill and Pamela J. Shoemaker, Tsan-Kuo Chang & Nancy Brendlinger. In the analysis we made a qualitative text analysis and analyzed the articles hermeneutically through eight dimensions in an analytical framework. During the study we concluded that there are only small differences between the newspapers in their reporting. We only found differences in two of the eight dimensions we analyzed. None of the theories fully consists with the newspapers reporting, but Hvitfelt is the theorist whose theory is most consistent with how the newspapers were written. He is followed closely by Harcup & O'Neill, then Shoemaker et al. It should be emphasized that the factors in the theories in many cases are vague and difficult to interpret, which led us to make our own interpretations in those cases. Although the theorists’ ideas differ, none of them has succeeded in creating a theory that is complete. It is only when the theories converge that they demonstrate an acceptable way of how an occurrence becomes news worthy in today's media landscape.

Rafeeq, Ali. "Covering Conflicts: the coverage of Iraq War II by The New Zealand Herald, The Dominion Post and The Press." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Mass Communication and Journalism, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/981.

Full text
Abstract:
The New Zealand news media have covered Iraq War II extensively, and from different perspectives, shaped by reporting restrictions, public opinion and editorial policies of the media organisations. This thesis studies New Zealand's three largest daily newspapers' coverage during the invasion phase of the war exploring their reliance on global news agencies such as Reuters, AFP and AP and on elite British and US newspapers. The research also aims to explore the newspapers' dependence on global news agencies and other content providers and the extent of US and Coalition domination of the news agenda. Global news media, including mainstream news agencies which mostly rely on government and military officials for information on military conflicts such as Iraq War II, become channels for propaganda and facilitate elite sources to set the agenda for national and global audiences. A content analysis of the three daily newspapers - The New Zealand Herald, The Dominion Post and The Press - reveals that the war coverage in New Zealand was framed by international news agencies, US and UK newspapers. And their reliance on US and Coalition official sources in the news construction meant that they became vehicles for propaganda. The mainstream New Zealand newspapers' coverage of Iraq War II is examined through the contexts of globalisation, news flows, media-source relations, news management and propaganda as these are the issues that have shaped the war journalism discourse in New Zealand. As there have not been many studies in New Zealand of news media coverage of wars, this research is an opportunity for studying mainstream newspapers of a country that is not a direct participant in the war. It gives the opportunity to compare reporting by newspapers in a country not directly involved in Iraq War II with that of countries that are directly involved. What emerges from this study is that the level of involvement in a war is no longer the most important factor in determining the direction of news media coverage. News values, globalisation, economic interdependence, news flows and propaganda are all highly significant factors affecting coverage. This thesis shows that the US military and government sources dominated the news agenda through various media management strategies. The findings of this research also demonstrate the dominance of the global news agencies and US and UK publications as main content providers in the war coverage. The implication of this is that the few Western media outlets are able to set the news agenda for news retailers such as New Zealand newspapers, and their readers.

Salazar, Serrano Luis José. "Weak value amplification : new insights and applications." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/404048.

Full text
Abstract:
Weak Value Amplification (WVA) is a signal enhancement technique proposed in 1988 by Aharonov, Albert, and Vaidman that has been widely used to measure tiny changes that otherwise cannot be determined because of technical limitations. It is based on: i) the existence of a weak interaction which couples a property of a system (the system) with a separate degree of freedom (the pointer), and ii) the measurement of an anomalously large mean value of the pointer state (weak mean value), after appropriate pre and post-selection of the state of the system. The usefulness of weak value amplification for measuring extremely small quantities has been demonstrated under a great variety of experimental conditions to measure very small transverse displacements of optical beams, beam deflections, angular shifts, temporal shifts, phase shifts, frequency shifts, velocity measurements and temperature differences, among others. In this thesis we make use of this concept to improve current technologies and analyse the true usefulness of this technique with respect to other experimental alternatives. In particular, we have applied the concept to measure femtosecond temporal delays between pulses much smaller than their pulse width. From the theoretical model we estimate that the ultimate sensitivity of this scheme will allow to measure delays of the order of attoseconds using femtosecond laser sources. In addition, we have developed an innovative experimental scheme that makes use of the interference effect present in a WVA scheme to generate a highly-sensitive tunable beam displacer that can outperform the limitations imposed by the use of movable optical elements. From the experimental results, we were able to perform a scan of a Gaussian beam with waist 600 μm over an interval of 240 μm in steps of 1 μm. Moreover, we have implemented a proof-of-concept experiment aimed at increasing the sensitivity of Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) temperature sensors. The sensors behave as frequency filters whose center is determined by its surrounding temperature. By means of a WVA scheme we were able to measure a polarization dependent frequency shift that is small compared to the width of each FBG spectrum, and from that value we were able to obtain a four-fold enhancement of the sensitivity with respect to current schemes. Finally, we address the question of what can offer the concept of WVA and what can not in terms of achieving high sensitivity measurements. By using a specific example and some basic concepts from quantum estimation theory, we have found that while WVA cannot be used to go beyond some fundamental sensitivity limits that arise from considering the full nature of the quantum states, WVA can notwithstanding enhance the sensitivity of real and specific detection schemes that are limited by many other things apart from the quantum nature of the states involved, i.e. technical noise.

Abstract:
Singular values have been found to be useful in the theory of unitarily invariant norms, as well as many modern computational algorithms. In examining singular value inequalities, it can be seen how these can be related to eigenvalues and how several algebraic inequalities can be preserved and written in an analogous singular value form. We examine the fundamental building blocks to the modern theory of singular value inequalities, such as positive matrices, matrix norms, block matrices, and singular value decomposition, then use these to examine new techniques being used to prove singular value inequalities, and also look at existing conjectures.

Abstract:

Algorithmic curation is a growing influence on our information flows as it complements and sometimes supplants traditional mass media and personal information sharing. One of the primary agents of this rise in algorithmically-curated information flows is the Facebook News Feed, a onetime source of primarily entertainment that has, as of late, taken large strides towards the news business. It is fair to say that Facebook has a huge influence on our information, one that will likely expand in the future; even if not Facebook, similar systems will rule our information. Yet, we know next to nothing about how they work, as the algorithms that power them are sealed inside a black box. This thesis approaches the Facebook News Feed through a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods in a process dubbed “Negative Reverse Engineering” in an attempt to gain access to the contents of the black box not through traditional technical means, but through an analysis of Facebook’s values structure and needs. Components include an extensive, cross-disciplinary review of the literature, an experiment based around the generation of filter bubbles through the application of negative pressure, a grounded content analysis of Facebook’s statements and documents, an autoethnography of Facebook use, and a regression analysis of Facebook under duress. From this data, a Hierarchy of Needs for the News Feed is created, rejecting the model of News Feed filtering as an equation in favor of a holistic, values-based model.

Schiffler, Andreas. "New game physics : added value for transdisciplinary teams." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/923.

Full text
Abstract:
This study focused on game physics, an area of computer game design where physics is applied in interactive computer software. The purpose of the research was a fresh analysis of game physics in order to prove that its current usage is limited and requires advancement. The investigations presented in this dissertation establish constructive principles to advance game physics design. The main premise was that transdisciplinary approaches provide significant value. The resulting designs reflected combined goals of game developers, artists and physicists and provide novel ways to incorporate physics into games. The applicability and user impact of such new game physics across several target audiences was thoroughly examined. In order to explore the transdisciplinary nature of the premise, valid evidence was gathered using a broad range of theoretical and practical methodologies. The research established a clear definition of game physics within the context of historical, technological, practical, scientific, and artistic considerations. Game analysis, literature reviews and seminal surveys of game players, game developers and scientists were conducted. A heuristic categorization of game types was defined to create an extensive database of computer games and carry out a statistical analysis of game physics usage. Results were then combined to define core principles for the design of unconventional new game physics elements. Software implementations of several elements were developed to examine the practical feasibility of the proposed principles. This research prototype was exposed to practitioners (artists, game developers and scientists) in field studies, documented on video and subsequently analyzed to evaluate the effectiveness of the elements on the audiences. The findings from this research demonstrated that standard game physics is a common but limited design element in computer games. It was discovered that the entertainment driven design goals of game developers interfere with the needs of educators and scientists. Game reviews exemplified the exaggerated and incorrect physics present in many commercial computer games. This “pseudo physics” was shown to have potentially undesired effects on game players. Art reviews also indicated that game physics technology remains largely inaccessible to artists. The principal conclusion drawn from this study was that the proposed new game physics advances game design and creates value by expanding the choices available to game developers and designers, enabling artists to create more scientifically robust artworks, and encouraging scientists to consider games as a viable tool for education and research. The practical portion generated tangible evidence that the isolated “silos” of engineering, art and science can be bridged when game physics is designed in a transdisciplinary way. This dissertation recommends that scientific and artistic perspectives should always be considered when game physics is used in computer-based media, because significant value for a broad range of practitioners in succinctly different fields can be achieved. The study has thereby established a state of the art research into game physics, which not only offers other researchers constructive principles for future investigations, but also provides much-needed new material to address the observed discrepancies in game theory and digital media design.

Abstract:
A rapid development with many innovations has happened in recent years. Nevertheless, more than half of all innovations fail, why it is important to understand the customers: their demand, their needs and their benefits. Hence, the purpose of this study is to develop a value proposition for a high technological product in rain measurement, called Ericsson Weather Data (EWD). Since it is a technology-driven product, it is necessary to understand the potential customers to determine the product's market potential. Therefore, semi-structured interviews have been conducted with potential users in Sweden. The purpose has been to understand how they use rain data, which challenges and improvement opportunities there are with current rain data and which the most prominent value drivers are. Our empirical findings show that most of rain data in Sweden is free and published online by public entities. However, the current measurements are one-point measurements, which leads to information losses. This complicates the assessment of rain damages, why there is a great desire for increased spatial resolution. In addition, there is a need for better information regarding local cloudbursts. We have developed a value proposition, matched to the customers’ needs. EWD measures rainfall using the existing mobile network, which is more deployed and achieves a better spatial resolution than the traditional equipment. In addition, EWD measures rain data with an interval of ten seconds, generating tighter (more) information about local cloudbursts. As cloudbursts and spatial resolution were highlighted as the most important factors, a value proposition with resonating focus has been developed, meaning that we focus on these two factors.
