Mudambanuki, Weston T. "News values of United Methodist Church editors." Virtual Press, 2003. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1259754.

Abstract:
Twenty-two United Methodist Church (UMC) editors Q-sorted fifty-four news stories in this research study. The concourse was constructed using six news values mainly used by editors and reporters in the commercial news media: conflict, impact, magnitude, prominence, novelty, and proximity. The stories were sorted along an eleven point bi-polar continuum from "most important" to "least important"The study revealed that two kinds of editor perceptions emerged in the UMC: the denominational editors who selected news stories based on the proximity news element, and the ecumenical editor, who selected news stories based on the news elements of magnitude, impact, and novelty.Despite the use of these news values, the study also showed that the environmental factors such as organizational policies of the UMC and the bishops, influenced story selection for publication.

Carter, Jessica. "An examination of Australian news coverage of Papua New Guinea." Thesis, Department of Media and Communications, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/7200.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines Australian news coverage of Papua New Guinea, a country with which Australia shares geographic proximity and strong historical ties. Specifically, this study examines the coverage of PNG by The Australian and The Sydney Morning Herald newspapers from January 01 until June 30, 2010. This work aims to demonstrate that PNG is a neglected news region. This neglect – in terms of quality reporting – has produced a limited and fragmentary portrayal of PNG in the Australian media. In this context, this study observes that the majority of news stories about PNG tend to lack analysis and contextual background. By examining the process of news framing and news values, this thesis suggests that the disproportionate emphasis on events associated with crime, chaos, disaster, and corruption has constructed PNG as a fragile, suffering and dependent society. The key methodologies used in this thesis are content analysis, and indepth interviews with a selected number of Australian journalists currently or previously based in PNG. The thesis forms part of a much broader examination of the changing trends in international news coverage of developing countries, particularly the Asia-Pacific.

DeVito, Michael A. "Facebook Family Values| A News Feed Hierarchy Of Needs." Thesis, The George Washington University, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1590713.

Full text
Abstract:

Algorithmic curation is a growing influence on our information flows as it complements and sometimes supplants traditional mass media and personal information sharing. One of the primary agents of this rise in algorithmically-curated information flows is the Facebook News Feed, a onetime source of primarily entertainment that has, as of late, taken large strides towards the news business. It is fair to say that Facebook has a huge influence on our information, one that will likely expand in the future; even if not Facebook, similar systems will rule our information. Yet, we know next to nothing about how they work, as the algorithms that power them are sealed inside a black box. This thesis approaches the Facebook News Feed through a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods in a process dubbed “Negative Reverse Engineering” in an attempt to gain access to the contents of the black box not through traditional technical means, but through an analysis of Facebook’s values structure and needs. Components include an extensive, cross-disciplinary review of the literature, an experiment based around the generation of filter bubbles through the application of negative pressure, a grounded content analysis of Facebook’s statements and documents, an autoethnography of Facebook use, and a regression analysis of Facebook under duress. From this data, a Hierarchy of Needs for the News Feed is created, rejecting the model of News Feed filtering as an equation in favor of a holistic, values-based model.

Abstract:
The problem investigated in the dissertation is the relationship between journalists’ understanding and practice of the professional values in their daily routines and the expansion of news management scenarios into the news production stages. Work presents theoretical framework for the analysis of the professional values as well as the analyses of the power of national media in cultural and economic contexts. Empirical research let to confirm the types of communicative relationships: that of the one-way effect, the mutual effect, and that of the hybrid effect and showed the dynamic position of the journalists during the social interactions of their professional activities. Types of possible manipulative mentality were distinguished in the work. A link between the evaluation of the manipulation and its use was found. The research also showed the relation between the use of the manipulation originated from the materialistic interest and the size of the journalists’ salaries. The connection between the frequency of the manipulation use and the awareness of the use was indicated. The ties between the rate of the manipulation use and the activeness of the contradictory to the professional values behavior were investigated. The research has permitted the detection of manipulative schemes. The use of the manipulation is more often along with the pragmatic professional values. The dissertation states that news management intervention to the news production process is influenced by... [to full text]

Yang, Guolan. "Gatekeeping Analysis of The Asian Magazine: A Case Study." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/52898.

Full text
Abstract:
As one of the most enduring theories in communication, gatekeeping suggests that stories have to move from one gate to another gate before being published. During this process, some stories are selected, while others are rejected. Previous studies heavily focus on traditional news media and explore the influence of internal and external forces on story selection. Very few studies, however, look at gatekeeping in new areas of technology. This case study extends this literature into social media. It looks at how editors at The Asian Magazine (TAM) select stories for its WeChat public account. Interviews with editors identify news values and news categories that these gatekeepers think are important. Results of the WeChat content analysis between May and August 2014 indicate that TAM editors do not strictly rely on established news values to select WeChat stories. News categories better predict story decisions. Examining which WeChat items generate the most reader engagement gives evidence of how well news content matches what attracts readers online. News category priorities closely match what readers want to read.

Thomas, Penelope Leith. "Facebook in the Australian News: a corpus linguistic approach." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/18747.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyses the reporting about Facebook in the Australian newsprint media over time, from 2004 to 2013. Based on linguistic analysis of news values, it investigates how traditional news organisations have presented Facebook as ‘newsworthy’. It makes use of a 104,514 word specialised corpus built specifically for the investigation called the ‘Facebook News Corpus’ (FNC), which consists of Australian news texts that appeared around three main events in the company’s history: 1) the launch of Facebook in Australia on 4 February 2004; 2) the listing of Facebook Inc. on Nasdaq on 18 May 2012; and 3) the introduction of Graph Search on 15 January 2013. The FNC is used to examine how news values are construed around a central topic, representing the first attempt to use corpus linguistics to evaluate news about Facebook. The thesis applies an iterative sequence of corpus linguistic techniques, drawing on quantitative and qualitative methods and analytical frameworks, especially Bednarek and Caple’s (2014) discursive news values analysis (DNVA). The study identifies important news values, clusters of co-occurring news values, and how they are constructed through language. It also provides empirical evidence for shifts in news discourse about Facebook over the three time periods that are investigated. Given the rise of Facebook as a primary news source for its more than two billion users, this information will be useful for future research on the role of social networking sites and their relationship with traditional news organisations.

Traynor, K. E. "Making local news : an organisational ethnography investigating news values within Local Digital Television Programme Services (L-DTPS)." Thesis, Liverpool John Moores University, 2017. http://researchonline.ljmu.ac.uk/6848/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study of the production of British broadcast journalism, rather than its finished products, reveals the ways in which the organising and financing of journalism have traceable consequences on the ways in which news is selected and constructed, supporting the critical political economy perspective. Using a comparative ethnographic approach including interviews and observation of professional practice in three local television newsrooms, studios and other production spaces, this study represents a rare opportunity to gain insights into the ways in which events, issues and sources are selected by journalists, editors, producers and others engaged in the production of British broadcast news and how material is shaped into news bulletins and other programming. Drawing on news value theory (Galtung and Ruge 1965; Golding and Elliott 1979; Harcup and O’Neil 2001, 2016), the study offers a new model of news value analysis, the ‘News Value Matrix’, which takes account of the interplay between two key categories of news values, organisational pragmatics and perceptions of audience appeal. The study will be of interest to local broadcast journalists, editors and producers, to policymakers concerned with media and cultural policy, and to those wishing to develop a greater critical understanding of the professional practice of journalism.

Watson, Lucy. ""How far will Miley go next?”: Miley Cyrus and the news in celebrity gossip magazines." Thesis, Department of Media and Communications, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/12444.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines news values in celebrity news. News values have been thoroughly analysed with regard to “serious” news, but little has been done to see how useful existing conceptions of news values are for celebrity news in gossip magazines. This thesis examines coverage of Miley Cyrus in four Australian gossip magazines from December 2010 to July 2014 according to traditional news values, and argues they are inadequate for understanding how celebrity news is produced. It then proposes and tests a different set of news values that function for celebrity news. Using a queer approach to heteronormativity, this thesis argues that the news values employed by celebrity magazines uphold and maintain a normative hierarchy, through the promotion of non-normative behaviour as scandalous gossip, and normative behaviour as worthy of celebration.

Rafeeq, Ali. "Covering Conflicts: the coverage of Iraq War II by The New Zealand Herald, The Dominion Post and The Press." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Mass Communication and Journalism, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/981.

Full text
Abstract:
The New Zealand news media have covered Iraq War II extensively, and from different perspectives, shaped by reporting restrictions, public opinion and editorial policies of the media organisations. This thesis studies New Zealand's three largest daily newspapers' coverage during the invasion phase of the war exploring their reliance on global news agencies such as Reuters, AFP and AP and on elite British and US newspapers. The research also aims to explore the newspapers' dependence on global news agencies and other content providers and the extent of US and Coalition domination of the news agenda. Global news media, including mainstream news agencies which mostly rely on government and military officials for information on military conflicts such as Iraq War II, become channels for propaganda and facilitate elite sources to set the agenda for national and global audiences. A content analysis of the three daily newspapers - The New Zealand Herald, The Dominion Post and The Press - reveals that the war coverage in New Zealand was framed by international news agencies, US and UK newspapers. And their reliance on US and Coalition official sources in the news construction meant that they became vehicles for propaganda. The mainstream New Zealand newspapers' coverage of Iraq War II is examined through the contexts of globalisation, news flows, media-source relations, news management and propaganda as these are the issues that have shaped the war journalism discourse in New Zealand. As there have not been many studies in New Zealand of news media coverage of wars, this research is an opportunity for studying mainstream newspapers of a country that is not a direct participant in the war. It gives the opportunity to compare reporting by newspapers in a country not directly involved in Iraq War II with that of countries that are directly involved. What emerges from this study is that the level of involvement in a war is no longer the most important factor in determining the direction of news media coverage. News values, globalisation, economic interdependence, news flows and propaganda are all highly significant factors affecting coverage. This thesis shows that the US military and government sources dominated the news agenda through various media management strategies. The findings of this research also demonstrate the dominance of the global news agencies and US and UK publications as main content providers in the war coverage. The implication of this is that the few Western media outlets are able to set the news agenda for news retailers such as New Zealand newspapers, and their readers.

O'Neill, Deirdre. "New values and selectivity in the construction of news : commentary on peer-reviewed published research articles." Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 2017. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/34426/.

Full text
Abstract:
This Commentary critically appraises my body of work over 15 years, the starting and end points being an exploration of the news values underlying the selection of news carried out 15 years apart, via various case study research articles that examine the type and quality of news that audiences receive. This body of work interrogates – from a range of perspectives – the ways in which some voices are privileged in the press, others are marginalised, while still others are absent in the news. I explore these issues from the perspective of the selection of news, through news values and source selection; how journalists develop those values and use sources to shape the news; the manner in which labour disputes are reported and trade union officials and members are legitimised or delegitimised; the extent to which celebrities are adopted and promoted in the news; how the views and achievements of women politicians are reported; and whether women have made headway in sports news, both in terms of the coverage of women athletes and in sports writing. The Commentary contextualises this body of work within both critical theoretical perspectives and rapid cultural, technical and social changes to situate the nine publications submitted for the degree to make clear the coherent nature of my inquiries. In this research I have maintained a contemporary analytical approach that suggests that the processes by which sources are chosen and news is selected undermines the plurality of voices in the press; that previous understandings of news values are outdated and that news values change over time and need to be revisited; that independent reporting is limited and a great deal of news relies on press subsidies with vested interests; and that ideological factors are frequently being played out in the news we receive. All of these findings have negative implications for the range and quality of our news. My findings have contributed to national and international debates about the news media, including an All-Party Parliamentary Report into Women in Parliament, challenged taken-for granted views about the news we receive and questioned the quality and bias of our news. The research has been disseminated nationally and internationally at leading conferences and in international journals and books, and in press articles, and is widely cited.

Full text
Abstract:
News values are used by journalists to construct events and news actors as newsworthy. The present study investigates the use of news values in the reporting on two territorial disputes, one between China and Japan (Diaoyu/Senkaku) and one between Japan and South Korea (Dokdo/Takeshima), in the US news outlets CNN, FOX News and the Washington Post. In addition, it also examines what news values tend to be associated with the involved parties, US-allies Japan and South Korea, and US non-allies China, as well as to what extent the news values associated with Japan differ between the reporting on the two disputes. This is done through a Discursive News Values Analysis (DNVA) which examines how news values are construed using linguistic resources. The aim is to produce new insights into how international conflicts are reported on, and how certain nations are made newsworthy in US media. The results suggest that the news values of Eliteness, Negativity, Superlativeness and Timeliness were foregrounded in the reporting on both disputes, while Proximity was far more common in the Diaoyu/Senkaku dispute articles. Eliteness and Personalisation were commonly associated with US allies while a combination of Superlativeness and Negativity was more common with US non-allies, which resulted in Negativity being further emphasised. Finally, Proximity was far more commonly associated with Japan in the Diaoyu/Senkaku dispute articles compared to the Dokdo/Takeshima dispute articles. Thus, the analysis shows that US allies tend to be constructed as newsworthy in a more positive light than non-allies, and it also indicates that nations defending a contested area in a territorial dispute appear to be framed more positively than their counterparts.

Robinson, Kelly Tatum. "News Values and Information Subsidies: How Organizations Build the Agenda on Social and Traditional Media." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/48964.

Full text
Abstract:
Information subsidies have been used for decades by organizations seeking media coverage. However, over the last decade, organizations are increasingly seeking to earn greater coverage by moving beyond traditional media and attempting to generate social media "buzz" about topics of significance. Agenda building theory has been used by a variety of scholars as a way to understand how sources influence, or build, the media's agenda. Since the media agenda influences the public agenda, influencing the media agenda is important for sources. Existing research and literature has successfully linked the use of information subsidies with agenda building. A separate body of research has established that there is a set of news values that make a story newsworthy. This study attempts to link these bodies of research on agenda building and news values by examining how the presence of news values in information subsidies affects subsequent media coverage. It also extends these concepts and theories beyond traditional media and into social media. Results indicate that agenda building theory also can apply to social media, but more research is needed to understand how organizations help build the agenda on traditional media. News values do affect coverage, but they affect social and traditional media differently. The specific values of conflict and magnitude correlate with greater traditional media coverage, while a higher number of news values overall in a release correlates with greater social media conversation. The presence of conflict also correlates with higher social media conversation. Implications for both public relations theory and practice are discussed.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to show which content that is most common in the Swedish News Agency TT Nyhetsbyrån’s sports coverage. It also shows if the coverage is concentrated to for example any special sports, clubs, people or topics. This study uses a quantitative content analysis and the result is based on texts from 28 systematically selected days during one year. In total, the study includes 906 texts. The result of this study shows that the sports content of TT Nyhetsbyrån’s news feed is mainly concentrated to two sports, football/soccer and ice hockey. Several studies of other Sports Media show the same result as this study in terms of news content.  One of the conclusions is that the sports coverage is focused on athletes and teams at a professional level. Only a few sports, almost entirely practiced by men, is represented in the reporting. There are also other attributes that seem important for the news coverage. One of the most common attributes is that a big part of the news texts includes Swedish Athletes. Another important attribute is that the news can be related to a country that is close to Sweden in culture.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the impact of web and social media analytics on news content production in three Australian legacy outlets (ABC News, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Australian). It proposes the idea of 'identity news' under an evolving quantification ethos in newsrooms shaped by the institutionalisation of news metrification practices. Identity news refers to the process of selection, design, crafting and news distribution according to the multiple demographics and inferred identities revealed by two basic measurement approaches in the field (the platform engagement regime on social media and the retention regime in websites).

Abstract:
This bachelor thesis, which is also the result of a Minor Field Studies scholarship, examines journalists’ situation in Cuba. The aim is to see the working conditions of the journalists by listening to how they themselves perceive their professional role, what their professional values are and what they see as opportunities and obstacles in their work. A major reason for undertaking this research is the theoretical perspective that emphasizes the importance of journalism studies in developing countries. The results are based mainly on fourteen qualitative interviews with Cuban journalists. By comparing the results with earlier studies including development journalism and studies about digital media in Cuba the study shows that Cuban journalists’ main duty is to defend the Communist Party. Many of the interviewed journalists experience self-censorship as a problem and blame it on Cuba's lack of a press law. Even if journalist salaries are extremely low, just like salaries of other professions in the state, the journalists highlight many positive aspects of their job. The education is free and some of the interviewees have opportunities to travel both within and outside the country because of their job. Cuban journalists are well educated, normally have a great passion for their profession and often have a strong desire to improve their work. The technological development in Cuba is slow but changes the conditions for the journalistic work and will continue to have a great influence on Cuban society.

Abstract: The objective of this research is to investigate the news values adopted by Jornal de Londrina to deal with urban issues in the city of Londrina, such as land use and occupation, the environmental issue and its relations with the construction industry and the real estate sector. The clipping used was the last three years of operation of the newspaper, which circulated between July 1989 and December 2015. This clipping allowed the selection of 121 reports, divided into eight themes that are related to this newspaper's agenda. Of these, two themes were chosen to be analyzed in the light of the news values, as they are more conflicting situations and deal with legal deviations and relevance, referring to two of the most important news values that appear since the first academic studies on the subject. journalism. The debate on news values was made based on a discussion proposed by five authors: Gisele Silva, Marcos Paulo da Silva, Pamela Shoemaker, Mauro Wolf and Nelson Traquina. These authors were chosen because their reflections point to a model of operational news values and easy to apply to the daily practice of newsrooms.

This research analyzed how newspapers Correio da Paraíba and Jornal da Paraíba reported news about young adults who were victims of violent crimes, in Cidades and Últimas sections, throughout a sample of 2014. The objective was to identify the meaning behind the choices made by both media, verifying aspects as the importance given to this kind of article, the published content’s diversity, the sources heard by the reporters, the news character, as well as the perceptions regarding youth, criminality and the individuals judged as deviants. The Content Analysis was the method chosen because it can identify the news tendencies, turning the raw data (like texts and images) into clear and justified statistics. The quantitative aspect also makes it possible to have a qualitative analytical approach, evaluating the details observed through the frequencies. In order to do it all, authors from communication, sociology, anthropology and Content Analysis were essential, such as Cremilda Medina, Mauro Wolf, Mar de Fontcuberta, Émile Durkheim, Howard Becker, Roberto DaMatta, Pierre Bourdieu, Mario Margulis, Marcelo Urresti, Michel Foucault, Laurence Bardin and Heloiza Herscovitz, debating themes as news values, crime, deviation, violence, youth and the methodological viability. Achieving the goals of this research, it was verified that, in general, both media reported news similarly: there is no consensual vision about what being young is like, nor any differential because of how young the victims are; both newspapers focus on answering the journalistic lead paragraph (who did what, when, where, how and why), only describing the occurrences by what they heard from official sources; there is no photographs attached, nor any highlights on the covers of the gazettes; mostly, there isn’t almost any purposed reflections concerning what those reported cases mean beyond what it is stated. Therefore, the media reports follow a standard, as if the journalist only answered to mandatory questions in a form. This is why the victims could be exchanged among the reports without any need to make changes on news’ structures. It’s clear though that both newspapers have potential to get over this kind of bureaucracy related to the way the reports are written and go much further on their narratives, as seen in other news about different subjects. However, it’s believed that this situation is due to the fact that both media don’t think the victimization of young adults is newsworthy enough, but keep posting about them in order to reinforce their panoptic social surveillance.

Abstract:
News in our contemporary newspapers has come to be associated more and more with what the elites do and say. Both their deeds and misdeeds are treated as newsworthy events and in the process they become newsmakers, both actors and sources of news. Even when they are not directly involved in news events they are sought out by journalists to validate those events and to interpret the social reality to the readers as news sources. This study is about the selection of news sources in the Daily Nation, a contemporary, independent newspaper based in Nairobi, Kenya. In this study, I set out to unravel the complex processes that underlie newsmaking and source selection. This study is informed by the theory of news values and the paradigm of the role of media in democracy. Based on qualitative interviews, observations and content analysis of the front-page stories, it investigates the process of news and source selection in front-page stories. Through these approaches, I established that news values are significant criteria that inform journalists in both the selection of front-page news stories and the sources of these stories. I also established that social values of the society in which this newspaper operates are heavily embedded in the news. For example, the journalists preferred male politicians as sources of news in the front-page stories to women, and the elites to ordinary people, and this reflected on the social structures and cultural norms that are prevalent in this society. This study, further, established that the news values of this newspaper share commonly with the Western news media in terms of journalistic conventions and ways of interpreting the social reality in the news. Ideally, the newspaper embraces the principles of democracy in news reporting, but in practice it does not satisfactorily adhere to the full requirements of its democratic role in terms of source selection. The democratic principles in news reporting require, among other things, that the newspaper should allow a diversity of views in the news, representing various groups that are found in real society including the elites, non-elites, women, ordinary people and minorities. In the case of the Daily Nation, a tiny group of elite male professional politicians made up the largest majority of its front-page news sources.

Abstract:
In this thesis project, the phenomenon of news media representation of punitivism has been researched through a methodology of a socio-semiotic discourse analysis framed within a theoretical structure of Durkheimianism and news value components. Articles concerning MetroXpress’ representation of criminal deviance and punishment were located through a buzzwords search within the newspaper’s online data archives. The search granted a total of 702 word-occurrences appearing in 216 separate news articles. The discourse analysis seperated these articles into the five sub-discourses of “Blurbs”, “Verdicts”, “Spectacle”, “Single Agent Focus” and “Cultural Context”. The distribution of articles pertaining to specific sub-discourses were distributed such that the highest concentration of articles was present in the “Blurbs” discourse, closely followed by “Verdicts”, placing “Single Agent Focus” and “Spectacle” in the middle, while the “Cultural Context” discourse was made up of the fewest articles. The methodology granted insight into functional punishment and MetroXpress’ representation of criminal deviance, revealing the newspaper’s discourse to be one of situated timeliness which positively promoted judicial-systemic activity. Presenting an anti-Durkheimian conception of deviance in relation to its supposed manifestation in any society, the newspaper presents the phenomenon as defeatable by the judicial system. In this regard, MetroXpress has positioned itself as the mouthpiece of the justice system, in such a manner that they function as a legitimizing force for the punitive system. Beyond the hierarchy of eliteness which permeates the discourse, a normalization of the conception of criminal deviants as dysfunctional obstacles who prohibit organic social cohesiveness is another facet of the discourse. Consequently, a primary focal point within the narratives center on the functional relationship between the deviant individual, systemic representatives and their relation to social cohesiveness.

Heywood, Emma. "Foreign conflict reporting post-9/11 and post-Cold War : a comparative analysis of European television news coverage of the Middle East conflict." Thesis, University of Manchester, 2014. https://www.research.manchester.ac.uk/portal/en/theses/foreign-conflict-reporting-post911-and-postcold-war-a-comparative-analysis-of-european-television-news-coverage-of-the-middle-east-conflict(1f514bbd-0779-44c9-bc27-66c26b507194).html.

Abstract:
The thesis explores the state of European foreign conflict reporting by public sector broadcasters, post-Cold War and post-9/11. It provides a comparative analysis of the news values of three television news providers from three differing public systems: BBC’s News at 10, representing a British public service broadcaster, nominally independent of government control; Russia’s Vremya on Channel 1, a state-aligned broadcaster used, to a large extent, as a mouthpiece for the government; and France 2’s 20 Heures, a public service broadcaster, from a media system with a long history of state intervention. By investigating their reports, the study identifies and analyses the differing roles of public and state-aligned broadcasters. It examines the priority they place on certain values leading to particular aspects of a news story becoming news in one part of the world but not in others. The case study under investigation is a two-year period (2006-2008) from the ongoing Middle East conflict which both pre-dates the change in East-West relations and the events of 9/11 and provides a meeting point of many of the geo-political and post-imperial global struggles facing the three selected news reporting countries. The analytical chapters examine a peace conference, Israeli-Palestinian fighting and intra-Palestinian fighting, which reflect discrete aspects of this conflict and enable the broadcasters’ overarching and specific narratives to be considered. The thesis uses these events to assess relations between state and broadcaster and the attendant associations with the war on terror which emerge in the foreign conflict coverage. It investigates possible imbalances in the reports to the detriment of one of the warring parties and contributes to understanding how the broadcasters perceive their own and other countries. The study examines the broadcasters’ news values and agenda-setting techniques. By focusing on these two areas, which influence the shaping, length and positioning of broadcasts, news reports are analysed both quantitatively (e.g. running order, airtime, number of items per programme and subject matter) and qualitatively (e.g. the portrayal of news values and agenda-setting attributes displayed). The overarching argument illustrates that the hierarchy in news values is never arbitrary but can be explained, in part, by the structure of the broadcasters and by events occurring within, or associated with, the reporting country. As a result, the thesis investigations help identify nationally differentiated perceptions of conflict throughout the world and, in a broader context, contribute to studies in the areas of media, foreign conflict and Middle East conflict reporting.

Abstract:
This theoretical master’s dissertation explores the cleavage between how audiences and journalists perceive transparency and objectivity through the following research questions: “Can transparency be understood independently of objectivity, or can it be included in a model of objectivity?”, “What are the underlying interests with normative concepts like objectivity and transparency, and what drives the process of replacing objectivity with transparency?” and “Can transparency replace objectivity’s dominance as ethical ideal in journalism?”. The questions are studied through a comparative research design of the main concepts transparency and objectivity and by employing a methodology that consists of secondary data analysis of qualitative data and qualitative meta-analysis. The theoretical framework consists of pragmatic objectivity, the process model of journalists’ roles, paradigm building and boundary maintenance and is applied to the secondary empirical material (academic articles). The results show that transparency is compatible with pragmatic objectivity, and I argue that unifying the ethical ideals is a way forward in order to resolve the contestation between the ethical ideals. The results also show that transparency has not reached the status of a normative role in contemporary news journalism. Furthermore, there are indications that transparency in contemporary news journalism has not replaced objectivity’s dominance, as the journalistic community is generally unwilling to give any genuine insight into its methodology. From a boundary maintenance perspective, the results also show that objectivity is in the process of being defended by journalists, as it is a highly practiced and valued ethical ideal in journalistic communities.

Abstract:
Manifestations of citizen journalism on Twitter have been mainly analyzed around trending stories, associated with public campaigns or breaking news. Microbloggers' everyday attempts to contribute to professional media coverage, however, have been scarcely addressed in the literature. This research analyzes the practice of tweeting at influential news outlets by using a mixed-method approach. Content analysis anddirected queries about users' own motivation to tweet at media explore the interactionbetween regular users and professional news networks. Results show that there is apredisposition towards negative media commentary followed closely by newsworthy topics generated by the users, which replicate to a large extent mainstream media's agenda. When asked directly in the feed 'why do you tweet at media?', users explain their motivations to address news outlets in diverging ways, from explicit citizen journalism mission, to visibility claims and coincidental tagging. The study contributesto the study of citizen journalism on social media platforms and elaborates a mixed-method approach suited for this type of online data.

Abstract:
In this essay, we have studied whether the Swedish newspaper Sportbladet reporting on the French football league (Ligue 1) is different from the season before to season after Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s arrival at Paris Saint-Germain FC in the summer of 2012. The teories that we applied were news values, framing and personalization. In order to complete our investigation, we used two different methods: a quantitative content analysis and critical discourse analysis to see if the news valuation and framing are different, but also to see what impact Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s arrival has on the media coverage of the league. The result of the quantitative content analysis and the critical discourse analysis shows huge differences between 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons. Sportbladet published ten times as many articles during Zlatan’s debut season in the league in comparasion with the previous season. The articles became generally larger, better placed in the newspaper and contained more columns about the subject. We could also note more focus on individuals in the articles. This change is mainly explained by the increased geographical and cultural proximity during the 2012/13 season, which arose in connection with Ibrahimovic’s transfer from Milan to Paris Saint-Germain. The result was pretty much as we had expected. The 2012/13 season was way more covered with a particular focus on Zlatan and his team in the articles. That shows what kind of importance a national super star like Zlatan Ibrahimovic has on the reporting from the French league.

Abstract:
This dissertation discusses the representation of investigative journalism in two Hollywood films produced between 2009 and 2015. The films in question are Spotlight (2015) and State of Play (2009). Investigative reporting and its practices are being discussed by using academic literature and previous research as the foundation of the study, followed by a discussion about the chosen research method: textual analysis. The textual analysis is conducted by concentrating specifically on three core journalistic practices of objectivity, use of sources and news values, and how these practices are represented in the films. The three core practices are teased out by using specific sequences from the movies in a form of images. The results of the analysis are then contrasted towards the existing literature discussed in the literature review. By using the means of textual analysis, the study found that both films are relying on stereotypes about journalism yet certain ‘reality’ about journalism can be found in these films. The journalists are in many cases shown as outcasts yet heroic figures who conduct thorough investigation and inform the public. In both films, the profession of investigative journalism is legitimized, and the journalists are depicted as the watchdogs of the society. Both movies lay much importance on the individual reporters and the investigation processes: processes that are rare in real newsrooms. This further enhances the mythic and overly positive, romanticized representation on journalism in films. As the study was based on textual analysis only, its nature was qualitative and interpretative. Future studies could include, yet not be limited to, adding another method and through this, to further deepen the research about journalism in films. Areas of research could include films produced in the 21st century and more specifically, films about journalism in the digital era.

Abstract:
The purpose of this essay is to examine and compare the news covering of Swedens three biggest cities (the metropolitan areas) and their surrounding areas with the covering of the rest of the country (the provincial areas) in two daily national newspapers, Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter. The aim has been to answer the following questions:- What amount of the news coverage in Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter concern the metropolitan areas compared to the provincial areas, and how do these two newspapers differ in the news covering of these areas?- Is there a difference in the news articles size and content, depending on weather they concern the metropolitan or the provincial areas?- How has the balance between news concerning metropolitan and provincial areas changed over the recent 20 years? The theories used in this study are News values, the media commercialization and Popular Journalism, and The Agenda Setting Theory. The method that has been used is a Quantitative Content Analysis.Despite the essays hypothesis, that the news coverage in the two newspapers would be dominated by material from the metropolitan areas, the result showed that a majority of the examined articles concern the provincial areas. It also showed that Aftonbladet has a bigger percentage of provincial news than Dagens Nyheter. The result also pointed towards the conclusion that the metropolitan areas and the provincial areas are similarly represented in the news, regarding the articles’ sizes and content. The overall conclusion in this study is that the fact that the provincial areas are being overrepresented in the examined newspapers news coverage ought to mean that the consumers of these papers are probable to get a wide, true image of what is Sweden, considering the Agenda setting theory and it’s view on how the media’s priorities will become important to the public.

Abstract:
Problem definition and purpose: A debated question in journalism today is if the mass media have the power to affect norms and values in the society. There are therefore many who believe that the media must works for democratic and equitable news coverage. Studies have shown that there are still many differences in how women and men are being portrayed in the Swedish media, even if Sweden is one of the most equal countries in the world. This inequality may affect the democracy and equality in the society negative. Previous studies have mainly been using gender as the only explanatory factor to explain the difference of coverage between men and women in the news content. The purpose of this study will therefore not only be to compare the coverage of the Green Partys two spokespersons, Åsa Romson and Gustav Fridolin, from a gender perspective but also to take in count other factors that could contribute to differences in the news coverage. Method and material: To find an answer to the purpose of this thesis a quantitative content analysis have been done on a total of 238 news articles in which Åsa Romson and/or Gustav Fridolin occur. Main results: The results of the content analysis show that Gustav Fridolin occurs more frequently in the news than Romson does, and that the articles he appears in is lager than the articles in which Romson appears. The results also show that the tone towards Fridolin in the articles about him is more positive and less negative than the tone towards Romson in the articles about her. Our results also show that Fridolin mainly occur in content related to school and education while Romson occurs more frequently in content dealing with environmental questions.

Abstract:
My study has questioned recognized factors of news valuation in the context of Costa Rican newspapers, with the aim at getting greater understanding in how news are valued in Costa Rican newspapers and what factors contribute to making an event the main article of an issue. My research therefore is a snapshot at how the news valuation process is conducted in Costa Rica at the moment. I furthermore went on to do a quantitative content analysis containing five theories of factors of news valuation, that I have theorised myself as a result of my research containing recognized factors of news valuation.   The data has been selected through a random selection process, and then collected via the national library in San José, Costa Rica. I then went on to carry through a quantitative content analysis, containing 46 variables from recognized factors of news valuation and an additional five variables from my own theories, on the selected samples.   The variables in my analysis to a great extent tried questioning the theories of Judy McGregor, Henk Prakke, Håkan Hvitfelt and Galtung and Ruge.   The results show that some of the theories created by mentioned scholar do apply in the news valuation process in Costa Rican newspapers. It furthermore show that some factors, mentioned by the same scholar, to have great impact in the news valuation process does not at all impact the news value of an event in Costa Rican newspapers. This study shows that there is cultural and geographical differences in how events are valued as newsworthy or not, and that the factors that are acknowledged as determining of news value in one region or country, may in fact not at all apply in another part of the world.   The results of my own theories show that there are differences in what factors that affect the news valuation process. My theories state that there are other factors that affect news values and that there can be opposing factors depending on in what country/region/journalistic area the news are valued.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis was to examine what stories the Swedish periodical Fokus write about in their main reportage, "Veckans reportage", and how they express their stories. Through the survey we wanted to examine which topics, areas and actors that occurred in the texts during the year of 2008. We studied Fokus in two parts. In the first part we read every "Veckans reportage" published in 2008, which is 43 reportages, and categorized them into groups based on topics, areas and actors. The result helped us to pick two representative texts to analyse further. The method we used in the second part of the survey was discourse analysis, with focus on actors, metaphors and representations.

The results of the first part showed that Fokus has a major Swedish perspective, either by topics about Swedish issues or by international topics and what influence they might have on Sweden. The most common topics during the year of 2008 were about politics and about social and welfare issues. The main actors in the texts were politicians and common people. The results showed that most of them were men.

The results of the second part showed that they write about the topics in a typical way for reportage, with detailed descriptions of places, surroundings and people. We also saw that the discourses that appeared in the two reportages corresponded to the given topics in the texts.

Abstract:
This study aims to show how much space Donald Trump and Stefan Löfven get in the digital edition of the Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet. To investigate this, a quantitative content study was used, counting the number of articles in which they appear between January 21st 2017 and July 21st 2017. In total 967 news articles were included in the study where articles appearing in the entertainment and sports section were excluded as well as editorials and columns.   In the articles we counted the amount of words and how long the quotes of the two persons were. We also counted how many articles in which both Donald Trump and Stefan Löfven appear and how the quotes were distributed between them. To count the articles we created a coding scheme with rules for interpretation.   The result of the study was that Donald Trump appeared more frequently in the tabloid than Stefan Löfven. This tells us that Aftonbladet priorities news about Donald Trump over news about Stefan Löfven which can be explained by globalisation, which is one of the theories used in this study, along with the theory of news values. However it was also clear that procentually Stefan Löfven was quoted more than Donald Trump. This can mean that even though globalisation brings nations across the world closer to each other, the physical distance still has a factor in what news sources appear in the news media.

Abstract:
This study examines how the media reports on the Pride Festival in Stockholm and what news topics and themes it prioritizes. The purpose of this paper is to examine whether the media coverage of Pride highlights political questions related to social and societal problems. One of the main focuses of the study is on how the media covers male and female homosexuality. The newspapers examined are the tabloids Aftonbladet and Expressen and the respected dailies Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet. The study extends over three periods: 19-07-2010 to 07-08-2010, 25-07-2011 to 14-08-2011, and 24-07-2012 to 11-08-2012. Several key theories and themes frame the study. One of the theoretical bases of this study is agenda theory, which is based on the idea that issues get more media attention when the audience perceives them as important. Another key theory in the study is the theory of news values, which concerns how potential news items are evaluated editorially. The study also looks at the theme of sex and gender as a power aspect and how the representation of the sexes appears in today's media. Using quantitative content analysis, 291 articles have been studied. The results show that media coverage during the Pride festival includes articles that address both serious and non-serious issues. Furthermore, the results show that the coverage of male homosexuals is more frequent than of female homosexuals. However, the majority of the articles focused on the collective concept “LGBT” and not on gender related issues.

Abstract:
The present research work aimed at studying the proximity of the journalism practiced in the case of primetime newsbulletins broadcast by RTP-Madeira. As such, our research question was: how is proximity constituted as one of the news value in Telejornal Madeira? Our main objectives were: 1) to meet the criteria of newsworthiness privileged by the news construction of Telejornal RTP-Madeira; 2) to analyse and characterize the structure, content, actors, journalistic genres, and the alignment of this newscast, comparing it to the newscast of RTP1; 3) to understand whether the content presented by the Regional Telejornal covers the principles of public service. For this purpose, we use a method of mixed analysis, in addition to literature review, included content analysis to television news and carried out an in-depth interview with the information director at RTP-Madeira. Given the results, we conclude that the Telejornal-Madeira conducts proximity journalism. Apart from its main news-value being proximity, the relevance of the regional information in the programme reflects its nature. While Telejornal-RTP1 focused primarily on political issues and also focused on issues somewhat close to sensationalism, the insular newscast offered additional emphasis on topics of citizenship. In addition, we conclude that the newsbulletin of RTP-Madeira meets, on the whole, with the principles of public service.

Abstract:
On the 11th of march, the coronavirus was declared as a pandemic and during the following weeks the media coverage about the virus drastically increased. The aim of this essay was to examine how two swedish newspapers, Dagens Nyheter and Aftonbladet, reported about and framed the news about the coronavirus. This was achieved by examining the difference between the reporting of the two newspapers and the difference between how the coronavirus was framed depending on which country was reported about. The framework of this study contains of framing theory, agenda setting theory, the studies of news values, stereotypes, and the Other. The method used to examine this topic was a quantitative content analysis based on 331 articles about the coronavirus. The results of this study show that even though the coronavirus was classified as a pandemic, that spread across the world, the main focus of the reporting centered around the coronavirus in Sweden. The places that the newspapers focused the least on was Africa and South America with barely any news about the spread of the coronavirus. In accordance with previous research, the most utilized theme in relation to the coronavirus was actions to slow the virus down and management of the virus. The most commonly used sources of the articles were other media outlets. The second most commonly used source spokespeople for different companies, they often spoke about the negative consequences that fell upon the companies due to the coronavirus. Aftonbladet produced 77 more articles than Dagens Nyheter, measured during the same timespan. Dagens Nyheter produced more articles about the economic effects that were caused by the coronavirus than Aftonbladet, they focused more on articles about actions to slow the virus down. The choice of angles of the articles also differed between the newspapers. Aftonbladet focused more on the negative effects of the coronavirus, while Dagens Nyheter did not have one specific angle that was more prominent.

Abstract:
Title: The news betrayal from TT – A quantitative content analysis of TT’s news reporting from the north In the year of 2013 TT-nyhetsbyrån closed down their three local editorial offices in north Sweden with a promise that the news coverage of Norrland would remain the same. In this study we aim to examine if, and how, the journalistic content has changed due to their centralization.  Based on theories of media and democracy, the commercialization of journalism and news evaluation, this study investigates different aspects of TT’s journalistic output such as news outlets, news topic, democratic value dimensions, framing, original reporting and sourcing.  The material of examination consists of a total of 199 articles which derive from Luleå, Umeå and Sundsvall. Further the material is spread out over two periods of time. More particularly five years before, and five years after the close down. We have employed a so-called synthetic week during both time intervals, meaning that you randomly select Monday one week, Tuesday the following week, and so forth.  The result of the quantitative study showed that TT’s news reporting about the municipalities has decreased in all the aspects that have been investigated. The analysis of the result, together with previous research and chosen theories, indicates that TT seems to have become more commercialized and audience-oriented, which may have affected how news is valued. From a democratic perspective it is problematic. As the largest news agency TT plays an important role in Swedish journalism, not least when editorial offices around the country reduce their own news coverage.

Abstract:
This report shows a qualitative study on how six young adults in the ages between 20-30 who are students at Linnaeus University in Kalmar percieve their news consumption habits and their use of news media on digital platforms. The aim of the study is to examine whether the six students feel the strogest connection with the press where they were raised or where they currently live, why they choose to use the media platforms they do and what meaning the use of the media bare to the students. We have seen a lack of information concerning why young people choose to consume news online instead of in printed media. The study is focused on theories concerning what affects people in their choice of media platforms and channels. This report shows that geographic nature, the quality of the content and which political ideology the daily press is founded on does not affect the respondents choice of media. Our study shows that the most important factor for the respondents is that the platform is easily accesssible and flexible. We can also see that the dissapering of the printed newspaper is connected to generations and techonology.

Abstract:
Purpose: The purpose of the study is to investigate how Swedish journalists covered murders in which children were victims. The main question of the study is whether in reporting there was a balance between following the professional ethical rules and the news values. The study follows the coverage of three cases where female children were murdered in small Swedish towns (in 1992, 2000 and 2008), and traces the dynamics of how the reporting has changed.   Method and material: The study applied quantitative content analysis and thematic text analysis to analyse the material. The material of the study was comprised of articles published in the morning newspaper Dagens Nyheter, evening newspaper Expressen and local newspapers Östersund-Posten, Barometern and Södra Dalarnes tidning. 467 units were analysed in the quantitative part, and 18 units – in the qualitative part.   The results: The analysis shows that regardless of the type of the newspaper, the journalists often do not follow the professional Code of Ethics when reporting on murders where children are victims. All the newspapers in all the three cases published information that could allow for identification of the perpetrator and provided the reader with (often unnecessary) details about the murders of the girls. The study shows that the frequency of reporting has increased from the beginning of the 1990s, however, in all the three cases, the media rather based their descriptions of the murders on the news values than on the professional ethical rules. This can potentially be explained by the newspapers’ orientation at commercial benefits rather than protection of the next of kin to the murdered.

Abstract:
On the 22nd October 2015 Anton Lundin Pettersson attacked students with a sword at Kronan elementary school, in the Swedish city of Trollhättan. The school is locally known to have many students with different immigrant backgrounds. When the police arrived at the school they shot the perpetrator and after an investigation the police claimed that the perpetrator had racist motives with the attack. Four persons died in the attack, including the perpetrator. The aim of this study was to compare how a local newspaper and a national newspaper covered and framed the school attack in Trollhättan. Our research questions were: How was the attack framed in the articles? How were the victims and the perpetrator framed in the articles? And are there any differences and/or similarities in the newspaper's coverage of the event? In this study we made a qualitative text analysis to examine the comparison between newspapers TTELA (local) and Aftonbladet (national). The timeframe we analysed for the news coverage was from the day of the attack (October 22nd) and one month forward (November 23rd). Totally 29 articles were examined where 17 was from Aftonbladet and 12 was from TTELA. The results showed that both newspapers framed the attack as something that no one saw coming and they both used the words “attack” or “deed” to describe the incident. The newspapers framed some victims as heroes and others as helpless people. Both newspapers framed the perpetrator as a racist, but only the national newspaper (Aftonbladet) framed him as a “lone wolf”. The results showed that the newspapers reported from different forms of othering.

Abstract:
The title of the study is: How long am I prepared to go for my text to get some readers? A qualitative interview-based study about Swedish sports journalism. The aim of this study is to figure out what underlying factors which affects the journalisms news values and selection on news based on which sports that get editorial space. The paper approaches the subject with a specific viewpoint from the sport floorball, which is the largest indoor-sport in Sweden. Though it’s relative size, the sport seems to have an issue: it does not reach out. It gets a lot less coverage and media attention compared with other similar sports, such as ice hockey for example. The development of the sport has been discussed through the years, and a part of that has been an less flattering image as a hobby, not a sport. A part of the discussion has also circulated around the argument that the sport doesn´t get the media coverage it needs. Some essays have been written on the subjects on journalism and media from the point of news value although very little has been done with a combined view on sports, which is why I argue that there is a gap in the research field which this study will partly fill. This work looks at what the sports media in Sweden are focusing on in terms of coverage and what the sport floorball can do to get more coverage. Since the 2020/21 season, the Swedish newspaper SportExpressen streams every game in the top league for both women and men. The theoretical framework in this study is based on the theory of gate-keeping and the commercialization of the media industry which has been put forward by Stromback and Jonsson. The chosen method of the work is a qualitative interview study which consists of an semi-structured interview with four news editors on four Swedish news papers.  The results of the study shows that the news editors believe that floorball get as much coverage as they deserve. There are several factors that affect contemporary sports journalism. One reason is that today´s journalism is well driven by digital metrics. This development in news values and news selection seems to derive from the technological development in the profession, as well as the commercialization.

Abstract:
The purpose of this essay is to analyze the EU discourse in the Swedish media. The questions that the analysis seeks to answer are; what image of EU is portrayed in the Swedish media? To which degree does the EU discourse fulfill media’s “news values”? And what are the potential effects of the discourse on EU’s reputation? After several demarcations, I chose 8 articles form Sweden’s four largest newspapers to base the analysis on.     The theoretical and methodical structure behind this analysis is the theories and practices of Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis. Added to the theoretical structure are also theories about reputation and theories about news values. The method used in the analysis is a modified version of Fairclough’s three-dimensional model of critical discourse analysis. The modifications are modified to suit the questions at issues, at the text dimension of Fairclough’s model the modification are inspired by Fowler’s critical linguistics. The results from the analysis shows EU is portrayed in several ways, partly as “bully” using per-pressure to get its way and partly as a hero that comes and cleans up the European financial mess. In many of the articles EU only plays a supporting role, and rather then being portrayed as part of our political system EU is portrayed as a guiding norm that we should measure up to.   The conclusion is that there is a lack of interest for EU in the Swedish media. News about EU struggle to fulfill two important new values; simplification and human interest. EU is a complex faceless bureaucratic institution with a lack of transparency. Also because of its complex nature it’s very difficult to understand the ongoing work inside EU. The potential effects to EU´s reputation due to medias lack of interest, is that EU becomes vague and unclear. The Swedish media legitimizes the Swedish peoples lack of interest in EU and that leads to a continuing lack of knowledge.
