Abstract:
A prominent British newspaper and its website publishes an inflammatory article stating that a lifeboat charity has been cynically abused by migrant traffickers who are using it as a ‘free ferry service’ to get their cargo of human beings into the United Kingdom. What reaction is generated on the Twitter social media network? What narrative, language usage and sentiment is formed? How does the charity react? This thesis examines this case and discovers through word frequency and conversational analysis how one news story reverberated in 280 characters or less. Themes impacted by this research include Twitter as a social media network service, fake news, echo chambers and their bubbles, trust and audience perception, news media literacy, social campaigning and awareness, and crisis communication and news/stakeholder management. The conclusion reached is that the story had the potential to adversely affect the charity’s reputation and future income stream even though it was doing its duty because of its unwillingness or inability to engage with stakeholders and correct any misunderstandings. The thesis discusses why this was not a good idea and considers how the story could have developed into a broader, more damaging entity with relative ease, especially with the role social media can play for news consumers in today’s society.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study has been to shed light on the notion of tall buildings in thecontemporary architecture and urban planning discourse in the Swedish media. By concretizingwhich ideas and values are expressed, we have also made visible which viewpoints that positiondebaters for or against the phenomenon. Discourse analysis has been used as a theory andmethod based on social constructivism, where discourses through visual and verbal rhetoric areconsidered to construct social reality. For this study, 23 selected articles from the daily pressand the scientific press constituted the empirical material. The results show three paralleldiscourses that can be distinguished in the statements, which are Position of Power,Architectural quality and The city is changing. The conclusions show that criticism of the highrise debate can be linked to ideas about rational planning and distaste for the functionalistplanning ideal of the 1960s. The conclusions also show that contemporary discourses becomea guideline for what should be prioritized from a planning and development context. The mediahas a great deal of influence over which discourses are noticed, and consequently which issuesare prominent in the development of society.

This thesis also reports a research that its main objective is to contribute to studies of Brazilian chronic and there are two objectives: 1. to ascertain the extent to which the opinion columns published in the columns of newspapers Folha de S. Paulo and O Estado S. Paulo can be characterized as textual genre - discursive. It is appropriate to the selected theme since there are several materials, prepared by journalists in the area of media that deal with gender and the treatment have a stated perspective, does not focus on the textual - discursive characterization of newspaper articles published in space called column. This thesis assumes that all social change produces a change in discourse and vice versa. The investigation involved the following instruments: 1. Theoretical and analytical procedure, from contexts, textual sequences and scale of the sequences in a more hierarchical sequence. 2. Selecting the analysis of material were selected texts from 1890 to the present day, published in the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo and Folha de S. Paulo. 3. Abstract:
The end of the Franco era and the start of the period known as the democratic transition was a change at various levels in the communicative situation, so far, was in Barcelona. Nilsson, Ninni. "Pragmatics, Newspapers and Context : A Study of How British Tabloid Newspapers Construct Context."

Full text
Abstract:
While the original focus of pragmatics was spoken conversation, this approach has been increasingly used in the analysis of written and monological texts, e.g. advertisements (Tanaka, 1994), as a means of explaining how the meanings within them are generated and recovered through context. The range of texts subjected to pragmatics has thus far been somewhat limited and there is scope for applying pragmatics in other genres. The research for this essay was designed to explain the generation of implicatures in newspapers by relating a sample of articles to theoretical approaches offered within pragmatics, such as Relevance Theory and deixis. A number of semantic and stylistic devices are used in such articles, such as anaphora, metaphor and metonymy. These depend upon an expectation of reader familiarity with them and they are thus able to contribute to brevity and comprehension. While newspapers have been examined by scholars to some extent, the focus of these studies has been on headlines and not on entire articles. In this current study, three articles from different British tabloid papers were examined. The examination showed that the articles had many features in common and what was the most salient was that they require the reader to rely heavily on encyclopaedic knowledge. It turned out that writers keep their articles brief by withholding details or clarifying information from the reader, as they assume the reader are familiar with the phenomena mentioned. Anaphora is frequently used in tabloid newspaper articles as it also enables the writers to keep their articles brief, but also because it makes the articles more varied and less repetitive. Additionally, reader familiarity with metonymy, metaphor and deixis is necessary if the reader is to make sense of what an article means.

Fournier, Shannon. "The Human Trafficking Crusade: A Content Analysis of Canadian Newspaper Articles." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/41403.

Full text
Abstract:
Although human trafficking was not a new concept, it gained increased attention across the United States and Canada in the first two decades of the 21st century. To better understand the Canadian anti-trafficking movement, this thesis analyzed the discourse on the topic in six local and national daily newspapers between 2008 and 2018. The goal of this thesis was to investigate the emergence of human trafficking as a social problem. Using social constructionism as a point of departure, a critical discourse analysis was conducted in NVivo of the quotes made by human trafficking experts in Canadian media. The results of this analysis suggest that an Unofficial Christian Coalition emerged in Canada, which – assisted by the media – led a moral crusade against human trafficking and pushed for the adoption of restrictive sex work legislation in Canada.

Murphy, Amanda Clare. "Evaluation in English and Italian newspaper opinion articles on the Kosovo crisis." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2004. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.633229.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the content and realization of evaluation through the lexico-grammar in comparable corpora of English and Italian opinion articles on the 1999 Kosovo crisis. The evaluations of the war protagonists Nato, Milosevic and the United Nations are compared, and goal-achievement is revealed to be important: negative evaluation of Nato concentrates on lack of achievement in the English corpus, and on lack of clarity of goals in the Italian. The evaluative adjective moral is found to be a banner word in the English corpus. Investigations into the lexico-grammar include an analysis of a) first person verbs and impersonal structures with evaluative functions, in which it is found that the English corpus makes greater use of first person structures; b) reporting markers before that-clauses and che-clauses, where argumentative attitudes towards reported propositions are more frequent in the English corpus, and c) adverbs of stance, which are used more to make argumentation explicit in the English corpus. The functions of interrogatives are investigated: interrogatives in the English corpus are interpreted as closing down debate in the text more than in the Italian corpus. Overall, evaluations in the English corpus are found to have a more overtly argumentative slant than their Italian equivalents.

Salih, Rashwan Ramadan. "A comparative study of English and Kurdish connectives in newspaper opinion articles." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/29255.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a comparative study that investigates English and Kurdish connectives which signal conjunctive relations in online newspaper opinion articles. This study utilises the Hallidayan framework of connectives in light of the principles of Relevance Theory established by Sperber and Wilson (1995). That is, connectives are considered in terms of their procedural meanings; i.e. the different interpretations they signal within different contexts, rather than their conceptual meanings. It finds that Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) classification of conjunctive relations and connectives needs to be modified, in order to lay out a clearer classification of English connectives that could account for their essential characteristics and properties. This modified classification would also help classify Kurdish connectives with greater accuracy. The comparison between connectives from both languages is examined through the use of translation techniques such as creating paradigms of correspondence between the equivalent connectives from both languages (Aijmer et al, 2006). Relevance Theoretic framework shows that any given text consists of two segments (S1 and S2), and these segments are constrained by different elements according to the four sub-categories of conjunctive relations. Different characteristics of connectives are considered in relation to the different subcategories of the Hallidayan framework of the conjunctive relations as follows: additive: the semantic content of the segments S1 and S2; adversative: the polysemy of the connectives; causal-conditional: iconicity in the order of the segments and temporal: the time scenes in the segments S1 and S2. The thesis comprises eight chapters. Chapter One introduces Kurds and Kurdish language, provides the rationale for conducting this project, and outlines the research aims and questions. Chapter Two reviews the existing research on connectives in particular and discourse markers in general. Chapter Three outlines the data and the combined methodology used in the following chapters. Chapters Four, Five, Six and Seven are dedicated to the four subcategories of conjunctive relations and connectives: additive, adversative, causal-conditional and temporal relations respectively. Finally, Chapter Eight reflects on the contribution of the research to the field in terms of findings and methodology and gives suggestions for future research.

Abstract:
Mischlingskinder, also referred to as brown babies were the illegitimate children of African American occupation soldiers in post-World War II Germany. The complexities of their existence are often discussed in the context of national identity, racial identity and diplomacy. Their existence in Germany presented social struggles for the children as well as their mothers as a post Nazi German began towards society of racial acceptance. A few cases, through the cooperation of both the US and German government, some of the children were eligible for adoptions by African American families in America through the Brown Baby Adoption Plan. A thematic analysis was performed on 20 archived newspaper articles to uncover the different themes in which the children are discussed. My question is whether these themes connect to a lager theoretical concept of the “priceless child”. The results uncovered themes in which the brown babies were discussed which included their treatment in Germany, neglect, adoption and arrival in adoptive homes. The narratives of the children change over time in relation to the specific themes.

Abstract:
<p> The present study seeks to add to the scholarly understanding of media coverage of trafficking by analyzing the content of articles on human trafficking published by the Washington Post and the New York Times in 2012 and 2013. Because the media have the potential to reach large numbers of the public and policymakers through the stories they tell, understanding exactly what the media are saying about trafficking and how that discourse changes over time can offer insight into the role of media in our society, particularly their ability to legitimize or challenge the dominant trafficking agenda. An analysis of trafficking articles also offers a chance to reexamine our perceptions -- if one of the major roles of the media in society is to educate or inform the public about social issues such as trafficking, then what perceptions are we being left with, and how accurate are they? By simultaneously focusing on these types of descriptive and theoretical research questions, this study adds to the growing literature on both fronts. The present study also partially replicates work conducted by another researcher for articles published between 1980 and 2006 in order to make comparisons between the two data sets and identify changes in the media coverage of trafficking over time.</p>

Abstract:
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2013.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: “Unofananidza Jesu naKombayi here? (Lit. Are you comparing Jesus with Kombayi?) (Condolences on the death of Senator Patrick Kombayi, 28th July 2009, Appendix B4, line 350) This Shona interjection during the debate on the motion on condolences on the death of Senator Patrick Kombayi (MDC- T) in the Zimbabwean parliament presents the speaker stance taking, appraising and strategically manoeuvering advancing certain argumentative positions. Considering the impact of the outcome of these debates on governance, discourse- analytic researches have to be carried out in order to explore the sorts of appraisal and argumentation principles that are realised. This study makes a multifaceted theoretical approach to a comprehensive exploration of debates and speeches in the Zimbabwean parliament and their representation in newspaper articles. The appraisal theory, the extended pragma- dialectic theory of argumentation and controversy analysis have been integrated to uncover important linguistic insights on parliamentary discourse and news reporting. The analysis is based on a corpus of debates and speeches in the Zimbabwean parliament within the period 2009 and 2010. Another corpus consists of newspaper reports on these debates and speeches in this period. A thematic approach informed by theoretical principles is utilised in the selection of reports, debates and speeches. Firstly, I examined parliamentary discourse. Focus have been on the critical discussion model, argumentative strategies- forms of strategic manoeuvering, how the dialectic- rhetoric relation can be understood, how appraisal resources are realised in the argumentation process and on examining how appraisal resources employed reflect the type of a debate or speech. Secondly, I explored newspaper articles from four Zimbabwean newspapers reporting on the same themes on debates and speeches. Focus has been to make comparative analysis of news reporting examining how appraisal resources are utilised in the representation of parliamentary discourse in different newspapers (independent versus government or state owned newspapers and English versus Shona newspapers) and to examine the nature of argumentation and strategic manoeuvering principles that are utilised in news reporting and how controversial (divergent) debates or issues are represented. This multifaceted analysis offered varied dimensions in the exploration of parliamentary discourse and news reporting and expansions of the appraisal and argumentation theories.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: “Unofananidza Jesu naKombayi here? Hierdie veelvlakkige analise het wisselende dimensies by die verkenning van parlementêre diskoers en beriggewing en uitbreidings van die waardebepaling- en beredeneringsteorieë gebied.<br>This project is a reality because of the generous scholarship I received from the African Doctoral Academy

Abstract:
Guardian and Zeit online articles attract a large number of reader comments in generaland those that include links specifically. Using both quantitative and qualitative contentanalysis, the reader comments that include links in 80 articles on four topics – TheRefugee Crisis, the Syrian Conflict, Elections and Artificial Intelligence – from bothnewspapers were classified according to type and pro or contra stance to the article theywere posted in response to.The aim was to discover whether a majority of these comments agreed with or opposedthe main premises of the articles they were responding to and to determine whetherdifferent topics results in different reactions. In addition to that the goal was to try andascertain whether these findings indicated falling trust in journalists or not, and whatreaders sought to achieve by commenting and posting links, if in fact they had a concretemotivation.Findings demonstrated that 61.1% of reader comments with links disagreed with thearticles they were posted to, and controversial topics were more likely to attract links byreaders and greater disagreement. Previous research and this study could not clearlyconclude whether audience trust in journalists is falling or whether that was a mereextension of falling trust in authorities and organizations for example. It could also notdetermine whether audiences comment and share links to effect some form of change orwhether they simply seek a platform to express their opinion without any conscious goalin mind.

Abstract:
Paper 1: Self-contained literature review - This systematic review considered the literature exploring associations between socio-economic status and depression. Fourteen quantitative studies deemed to show quality and relevance were selected for inclusion. Results focussed on the areas of income, education, neighbourhood factors, social support and resilience and cognitive appraisal. Findings suggested that individual socio-economic status was significantly associated with depression, with income and education being a mediating factor. Neighbourhood socio-economic status appeared to compound this effect. Negative appraisal of personal and social status was also suggested to increase vulnerability to depression. The research considering the effectiveness of social support in promoting resilience was contradictory and required further exploration. Paper 2: Main research report - Following the release of the Depression Report in 2006, Professor Layard recommended increased funding be given to psychological services within the NHS, prompting the development of the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies agenda. This agenda paid particular focus to cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT). This study considered the way in which CBT was represented in eleven newspaper articles, post Layard, using critical discourse analysis. Findings suggested the presence of gendered accounts of mental illness. Individuals considered suitable for receiving CBT were often constructed as passive. CBT was not only suggested to be potent and fashionable, but also showed characteristics that were paralleled with concepts of masculinity. The text was seen to polarise in several ways, often marginalising other therapeutic approaches. Emerging discourses were found to frequently mirror wider socio-historical practices. Clinical implications of the findings and suggestions for future research were discussed and a critical appraisal of the research process included.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.A. (Psychology)) --University of Limpopo, 2015<br>The aim of the study was to explore the psychological profiles of perpetrators of domestic violence as represented in newspaper articles. An archival research approach was chosen as the appropriate design for the present study. The researcher accessed and studied all newspaper articles from two daily newspapers reporting on domestic violence over a two-year period (that is, from January 2011 up to December 2012). A total of 98 newspaper articles (sixty from the Sowetan newspaper, and 38 thirty eight from the Daily Sun newspaper) covering the period under review were retrieved. The data was captured on a self-developed data record sheet. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyse the data. The results were analysed and presented using frequency tables, descriptive statistics and cross-tabulations. The results of the study showed that the majority of the victims of domestic violence were women with little education and skills. Assault, attempted murder and murder were found to be the forms of violence perpetrated against the victims. The majority of the perpetrators (70.4%) were males, with higher education and skills. Some of the perpetrators were represented in the newspaper articles as being emotionally troubled (69.4%), passively aggressive (11.2%), mentally disturbed (5.1%) and socially deviant (3.1%). The majority of the mental health problems that were associated with the perpetrators of domestic violence included depression, borderline personality and acute psychosis. A number of triggers were found to lead to domestic violence. These included family arguments, jealousy, substance abuse, and criminal behaviour. Based on the above results, the study is concluded by recommending anger and stress management as some of the programmes that the government could introduce to minimise domestic violence.

Al-Shunnag, M. A. "Stance in political discourse : Arabic translations of American newspaper opinion articles on the 'Arab Spring'." Thesis, University of Salford, 2014. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/32823/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to introduce the theoretical concept of stance, as an aspect of interpersonal meaning, into the discipline of Translation Studies and to explore the reproduction of stance in translations of a heavily opinionated political genre commissioned by newspapers. It seeks to provide an account of how patterns of stance are conveyed in newspaper opinion articles on the ‘Arab Spring’ originally published in English in the Washington Post and the New York Times and then how these patterns are re-conveyed in full translations of these articles for two quality Arabic-language newspapers with divergent editorial policies: Al-Ghad and Al-Ittihad. A triangulation of methods is employed for providing a coherent analysis of stance at different levels: lexico-grammatical, textual, and contextual. Accordingly, the methodology chosen for the purposes of the study is a combination of corpus- and discourse-analytical methods that operate within the tradition of descriptive translation studies. The former is drawn from the lexicogrammatical framework of stance (Biber et al., 1999; Biber, 2006), while the latter is drawn from appraisal theory (Martin and White, 2005). Also, the combined methodology is complemented by some aspects of Fairclough’s model of critical discourse analysis (1992, 1995a) and Baker’s narrative theory (2006), which, to varying degrees, allow for the contextualisation of the findings and the explanation of translational behaviour. The main contribution of the thesis is that it introduces a new theoretical concept into the field – the concept of stance. This has not previously been approached within translation studies, although it has been high on the research agenda for the past two decades or so within the field of linguistics and its neighbouring disciplines. Also, the thesis has designed and tested a new combined theoretical approach to analyse this phenomenon within the tradition of descriptive translation studies. Moreover, this thesis contributes to the field as well by addressing a new form of shifts in translation, namely shift in stance. The examination of the conveyance and reconveyance of stance reveals that significant shifts in stance occurred in the Arabic translations produced by Al-Ghad and Al-Ittihad. These shifts result in the weakening, accentuation, and entire loss of original stance.

Iceton, Jennifer. "Media Representations of Abortion Politics in Florida: Feminist Geographic Analysis of Newspaper Articles, 2011-2013." Scholar Commons, 2016. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/6263.

Full text
Abstract:
Feminist geographers argue that gendered bodies and power are deeply entwined (McDowell 1992; Rose 1993). However, few geographers have investigated how gender and power interact in relation to the politics of abortion access. This thesis seeks to fill this gap by conducting a feminist content analysis of six newspapers from Florida’s three largest metropolitan areas to determine how articles featuring abortion are framed. Analysis of the dataset concludes that the politicization of the abortion debate results in the erasure of women from the conversation, the identification of a pregnant women trope which homogenizes all women into one category, and Planned Parenthood’s classification as a health care provider being ignored subsumed under a recognition of its role in providing abortion services. Overall this study argues that patriarchal institutions regulate women into compulsory motherhood, thereby constraining their agency and ability to fully participate in society participate in political democracy.

<p>This paper presents why and how teachers use newspaper articles in the classroom when they educate their pupils in chemistry, biology and nature science. All the teachers have worked over 20 years and are, when interviewed, at a Swedish gymnasium in Dalarna. I also have, in a small study, interviewed some of their pupils to get their view about teachers using news paper articles during lessons.</p><p>The teacher’s use of newspaper articles in the classroom can be divided in different ways. They can use the articles to illustrate up to date links to everyday life. Some teachers’ uses articles by letting the pupils read the articles and answer questions about them. Or the newspaper articles can function as background material when the pupils do a project work covering a number of lessons. The major part of the teachers thinks that the main reason why they use articles from newspapers is to get up to date information concerning the course that are covered.</p><p>The results show that the teachers in Dalarna use their newspaper articles in the same way as shown in international studies. For example they used the newspaper articles to start a lesson or a new topic. Or they used the article to have an example on the subject they teach. But a number of differences can also be observed between this study and other international ones, for example the main reason why the articles are presented to the pupils and how the articles are used over time.</p>

Abstract:
This paper analyzes some forms of linguistic manipulation in Japanese in newspapers when reporting on North Korea and its nuclear tests. The focus lies on lexical ambiguity in headlines and journalist’s voices in the body of the articles, that results in manipulation of the minds of the readers. The study is based on a corpus of nine articles from two of Japan’s largest newspapers Yomiuri Online and Asahi Shimbun Digital. The linguistic phenomenon that contribute to create manipulation are divided into Short Term Memory impact or Long Term Memory impact and examples will be discussed under each of the categories. The main results of the study are that headlines in Japanese newspapers do not make use of an ambiguous, double grounded structure. However, the articles are filled with explicit and implied attitudes as well as attributed material from people of a high social status, which suggests that manipulation of the long term memory is a tool used in Japanese media.<br>この論文は日本語の新聞中の北朝鮮と核実験に関する報告記事の曖昧さと操作的な態度についてである。

Musundwa, Sibongile C. "Discursive practices around film and music piracy in selected newspaper articles and radio broadcasts in South Africa." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/13765.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyses South African news media discourses on piracy to consider whether corporate interests or those of civil society are served by stories about copyright infringement and piracy awareness campaigns. This thesis employs critical discourse analysis to show that hegemonic interests are ultimately served by news coverage, made up of selected newspaper articles and radio broadcast over a ten year period, that frames a range of commercial and non-commercial copying activities as criminal acts. Two dominant frames are identified: piracy as an economic issue and piracy as a crime. The thesis shows how the harms of copyright infringement are conflated by ideologies of the 'pirate' as a violent criminal and 'piracy' as an activity against commerce. The thesis finds a fracturing boundary between the orders of discourse of corporate and civil interests and those of news media. Entertainment media, as one block, garners a way to construct and sustain alliances with news and information media (such as newspapers and news and talk radio), taking on an ideological form. When this type of consent is won, and thus elite interests served, the ability to ensure a richly sourced and diverse public domain and public sphere is compromised.

Abstract:
The object of this study was to get a wider picture of the articles published in the Swedish online newspaper Nyheter24. The newspaper is the biggest newspaper only coming out online in Sweden today and basically the idea was to get an overview of their content. The study was based upon two research questions: “What does Nyheter24 write about?” and “What type of journalism does Nyheter24 make?” My research method was a quantitative content analysis and the study contains 550 articles in total, gathered during two weeks time from the website. The results show that Nyheter24 writes about various topics but they tend to produce news stories with an odd or sensational angle. More than half of the articles studied in the news section were rewrites from other news media and less than 20 % of the articles in the same section had quotes from interviews done by the newspaper themselves. In the sports section, just one of all the articles published in the section during the two weeks contained a quote from an interview Nyheter24 had done. The study does also show that investigative journalism is rare at Nyheter24. But it was even more uncommon, zero articles in the news section, for the journalists to do reports of places or news events by going outside the newsroom. What played a bigger part in the news from Nyheter24 was social media. Especially the sports section and the entertainment section published stories where social media was the origin of the story. Generally the results show what several other researchers have found out about online journalism. There is a big recycling of news and the journalists tend to be stuck behind a computer, screening websites and doing rewrites to publish a lot of material quickly. Doing interviews to the stories seemed to have a lower priority.

PONTIFÍCIA UNIVERSIDADE CATÓLICA DO RIO DE JANEIRO<br>COORDENAÇÃO DE APERFEIÇOAMENTO DO PESSOAL DE ENSINO SUPERIOR<br>PROGRAMA DE SUPORTE À PÓS-GRADUAÇÃO DE INSTS. No que tange a minha prática docente – e à dos professores da rede pública de ensino que reconhecem a greve como direito legítimo –, o estudo proporcionou a reflexão acerca de como temos discursivamente construídas nossas identidades no e pelo discurso da mídia jornalística.<br>With the objective of investigating identity construction of teachers on strike through the observation of evaluative discourse in newspaper articles, this study analyses online articles, published by the newspapers O Globo and O Dia, during two periods in which the public school system of Rio de Janeiro entered on strike –from August to October, 2013 and from May to June, 2014. The investigation aims at discussing the following questions: 1) what identities of teachers on strike are constructed by the evaluative discourse of the newspaper articles? 2) how do the evaluative linguistic resources produce discourse which constructs these identities? 3) what ideological meanings are generated by the discourse of the articles analysed, suggesting relations of power and dominance involving teachers on strike? Adopting an interdisciplinary focus, the study is based on Martin s (2005) telelogical perspective of discourse genres; on the sociosemiotic approach to language proposed by Systemic-Functional Linguistics (Halliday, 1994), particularly on the resources of Appraisal Theory as well as on the tenets of Critical Discourse Analysis (Chouliaraki and Fairclough, 1999) and on the socioconstructionist theories of identity (Moita Lopes , 2003; Hall 2005; Bauman, 2005; Duszak 2002). Results suggest the construction of multiple identities of teachers on strike, most of them negative, such as: aggressive, riotous, troublemakers, uncompromising, irresponsible and, in a positive manner, courageous. Amongst the theoretical contributions of the study, it is highlighted the rich interface between social and critical linguistic approaches which understand the linguistic phenomenon as cultural and sociohistorically situated. Regarding my teaching practice –and that of other teachers from the public school system who recognise the strike as a legitimate right –, the study provided the reflection on how educators have their identities discursively constructed by journalists in the media.

Abstract:
This research sought to explore media framing theory, first introduced by Erving Goffman, which asserts that the media portray certain items in a way that affects awareness, salience and tone of those items. There has long been debate about media framing especially as it pertains to the framing of violent events. Mass shootings are of particular interest because of the graphic and often senseless nature of the crime. This study looked particularly at the 2011 Tucson, Arizona mass shooting. A content analysis of articles between February 7, 2010, and November 8, 2011, was conducted to explore media framing of gun control after the Tucson, Arizona mass shooting involving U. S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords. Results showed an equal amount of articles with a negative or neutral tone, with the tone shifting to being more frequently neutral after the shooting. The topic shifted toward legislation, adding further support to media framing theory. These findings have impacts for media and public relations.

Abstract:
Aware of the well-studied non-neutrality of media and the challenge that represents to have mechanisms to objectively identify the ideological bias, this thesis provides a methodological proposal to assess the political ideology of newspapers. The model’s originality lies on merging the contribution from political and communication sciences, as it is built considering the core values of political ideologies. The model is qualitatively inspired by the Critical Discourse Analysis perspective, and quantitatively by the traditional Content Analysis. It allows to compare samples according to an ideological framework and classify the outlets in four categories: elitism, egalitarianism, communitarianism and individualism. The model was applied to study the one-year time frame (2018) of editorial content (n=2,195) from the eight most read online newspapers in Brazil.

Heywood, Crystal. "A Critical discourse analysis of word choices surrounding ethnic identities of sexual exploitation victims and perpetrators in Canadian newspaper articles." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/45039.

Full text
Abstract:
Language used in the media to depict sexually exploited youth reflects societal assumptions that manifest in the health and well-being of these young people. Using Critical discourse analysis (CDA), this study examined word choice usage in 144 Canadian newspaper articles, attending specifically to the ethnicity of the victims and the perpetrators of sexual exploitation. The purpose of the study was to examine how power placement and to gain insight into how society perceives those involved in the sexual exploitation of youth. This study utilized both quantitative and qualitative analysis strategies. The results of the CDA suggest that society identifies that the sexual exploitation of youth in Canada is a problem; however, for the most part, society is not intervening. The findings also illustrate that the ethnic identities of the victims of sexual exploitation are more frequently revealed than the perpetrators. The victims of abuse are often from minority ethnic backgrounds; however, youth from a number of countries have been exploited. The almost invisibility of the exploiters of abuse who represent positions of power and trust, and whose ethnic identities are Caucasian support the concept of white privilege being present in society’s view of the sexual exploitation of youth. The results of the CDA support the need for culturally safe and competent nursing interventions for both the victims and perpetrators of sexual exploitation.

Abstract:
Abstract The purpose of this essay was to examine what methods might be used in translation from English to Swedish of two informative newspaper articles about current events, which took place in 2010 and 2011, viz. the publishing of secret documents on the Internet by JulianAssange and WikiLeaks. The study is based on Lakoff and Johnson’s theories on metaphorical concepts, presented in their work Metaphors We Live By (1980/2003), and the focus of the translation study is on metaphors and metonomy. The texts contain a large number of metaphors. Almost 100 of those have been listed in an Appendix, attached to this paper, and a great many of these metaphors were analysed. The special metaphor types of metonomy and personification were studied separately, as well as together with the rest of the metaphors. The theoretical model used was Vinay and Darbelnet’s theories of direct and oblique translation, comprising the following seven strategies: literal translation, borrowing, calque, transposition, modulation, equivalence and adaptation. Other theorists, whose professional expertise and experience proved useful in this work, were Munday, Newmark and Ingo. Parallel texts, monolingual dictionaries and the Internet were also most valuable in the translation process. Choosing the appropriate and correct vocabulary and expression in the target language was not always an easy task, and certain words and passages translated were revised on several occasions. As for the translation strategies used, equivalence was the most interesting one, and transposition should perhaps have been used to a larger extent. Literal translation was probably used most of them all.

Full text
Abstract:
A key element in cultural and gender power relations surrounding abortion is how women who undergo an abortion are represented in public talk. We analyse how women were named and positioned, and the attendant constructions of abortion, in South African newspaper articles on abortion from 1978 to 2005, a period during which there were radical political and legislative shifts. The name ‘woman’ was the most frequently used (70% of articles) followed by ‘girl/teenager/child’ (25%), ‘mother’ (25%), ‘patient’ (11%) and ‘minor’ (6%). The subject positionings enabled by these names were dynamic and complex and were interwoven with the localised, historical politics of abortion. The ‘innocent mother’ and the bifurcated ‘patient’ (woman/foetus) positionings were invoked in earlier epochs to promote abortion under medical conditions. The ‘dangerous mother’ and woman as ‘patient’ positionings were used more frequently under liberal abortion legislation to oppose and to advocate for abortion, respectively. The positioning of the ‘girl/teenager/child’ as dependent and vulnerable was used in contradictory ways, both to oppose abortion and to argue for a liberalisation of restrictive legislation, depending on the attendant construction of abortion. The neutral naming of ‘woman’ was, at times, linked to the liberal imaginary of ‘choice’.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to analyse how physical activity in the prevention and treatment of diseases, is portrayed in Vietnamese media. This is interesting because the traditional Vietnamese health culture differs a lot from the Western one. The topic is also of immediate importance in Vietnam, because of the increasing numbers of diseases, such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, even called non-communicable diseases. This is connected to the decreasing physical activity and increasing obesity in the country. A Swedish-Vietnamese project in Vietnam is going on since two years, with the aim of disseminating Swedish experiences on the topic to the health care staff and the general public. Thirty-one articles have been analysed with regard to cultural references and persuasion means. The methods include rhetorical analysis, quantitative content analysis and semiotics. The theoretical framework constitutes of previous research on characteristics of Vietnamese/Asian journalism in general, and Vietnamese preventive health education in particular. To get a better understanding of the results, various theories such as post-colonialism and cultural hegemony have been used. The findings indicate that the articles portray the health-benefits of physical activity as something new to the Vietnamese people. It was not possible to find any point of similarity to the traditional forms of Vietnamese preventive health propaganda in the articles. The different references in the articles where mostly made to Western sources. The pictures in the articles signal both threat/fear and hope and they portray both people with East Asian-and Western appearance.

This study aims to examine two daily newspapers and three travel magazines’ production of Dark Tourism, and find out what differences and similarities the petitions have. A critical discourse analysis has been applied as a method in this study and the results show that two different discourses, one of which is melancholic and the other is sanguine, characterizes these journal genres. It is also clear that the discourses that prevail in the newspapers can have a big impact on people's perception of the phenomenon of Dark Tourism.   Keywords: Dark Tourism, Discourse, Newspaper Articles, Critical Discourse Analysis, Media

Eriksson, Daniel. "Using the F-measure to test formality in sports reporting : A comparison of the language used in soccer and horse polo articles in two British newspapers." Thesis, Karlstads universitet, Institutionen för språk, litteratur och interkultur (from 2013), 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-67982.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper investigates the formality level of the language used in twenty articles from two sports that seem to cater to different social classes (soccer and horse polo). The articles that serve as the data were published in two different types of British newspapers, one broadsheet (The Daily Telegraph) and one tabloid (The Daily Express) from September 2010 through November 2017. The study uses a quantitative method by means of the F-measure, and a qualitative analysis of two articles whose results deviate from the rest. The quantitative results show that there is a difference in formality in sports articles on the two sports soccer and horse polo, where articles on polo score higher on the F-measure in both newspapers. Most articles on horse polo follow the pattern of the informational production with features like a high ratio of nouns, pronouns, long words, and adjectives often found in academic papers and legal documents etc. Articles on soccer follow the involved production, characterized by a high ratio of verbs, adverbs, pronouns, and WH-questions often found in spoken interaction. The qualitative analysis shows that the article on soccer which has a much higher F-score than the rest is an informative article on the price of season tickets, and that the polo article with a very low Fscore contained a lot of quoted speech.<br>I den här uppsatsen undersöks formalitetsnivån i tjugo artiklar om fotboll och hästpolo.

This dissertation seeks to analyze the concept of terrorism that can be found in the news articles from two main American newspapers - The New York Times and The Washington Post - in the period between the attacks of september 11 and the war against the Taliban government in Afghanistan. As parameters to the analysis, we used questions raised from two main academic debates related to the concept of terrorism. Abstract:
This thesis contains a qualitative content analysis of Daily Monitor, Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet’s articles about children, and child soldiers in Uganda. In total, there were 26 articles that have been applied to this study. The purpose of this thesis was to compare all 26 articles with each other to see potential diffrences or similarities. Theory based answers were applied when I was analyzing the articles' differences and similarities. The thematic content analysis applied and used to catagorize the concerning theames in the articles are: children or soldiers (as the major theme), and heroes and victims (as undercategorial theme). Postcolonial, childhood and childsoldier theories were used as the theoretical framework to the thesis, and they were all applied in the analysis. The chosen theoretical framework contributed not only to a critical viewpoint about children, and child soldiers, but also to Western power relations, which appeared in many newspapers. Furthermore, the theoretical framework contributed with different views about children, and child soldiers in different social and cultural contexts.

Abstract:
This thesis evaluates and develops a method for studying the occurrence of cascading effects between critical infrastructures. The thesis also analyzes how the results of previous research using the method may have been affected by certain aspects of the method. Applying different inclusion thresholds and exploring how material could be gathered differently, the thesis provides some tentative answers to the value of using newspaper articles when studying cascading effects. In addition, the thesis offers recommendations for future research and policy on the protection of critical infrastructures.

Abstract:
The following master thesis analyzes to which extent streaming services in particularNetflix influence the German television landscape and how this discourse is covered inGerman newspapers. The work shows that online streaming services with their non-linear content have animpact on German television. The theoretical base of the work is the critical discourseanalysis by the German linguist Siegfried Jäger. His work analyzes relevant socialdiscourses with its own method based on the theory of the French philosopher MichelFoucault. The present thesis refers to Netflix as a streaming service and analyzes theaspect of how it influences the television landscape since its introduction on the Germanmarket in 2014. For deeper understanding before conducting the critical discourse aninitial analysis of the German television market is presented. The base of the analysisare newspaper articles. Furthermore, the relevant aspects of the publishing landscape inGermany are introduced to provide the reader with relevant background knowledge. Moreover, the thesis contains an analysis of newspaper articles from three leadingnewspapers in Germany: Süddeutsche Zeitung, BILD Zeitung and taz, die tageszeitung(following referred to as taz). 15 representative articles were chosen and afterwardsanalyzed with the method of critical discourse analysis. The results of all threenewspapers on the Netflix discourse are compared to each other. In conclusion, thework shows that the influence of streaming services, especially Netflix on Germantelevision is stronger then expected. And even if television is still seen as the leadingmedium in Germany, public as well as private broadcasters have to be aware of the newcompetitor on the market and adapt to constant changes especially in the online segment.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study has been to find out what possibilities the journalists at the newspaper Aftonbladet have to live up to the proposed ideas and values that defines journalism, as well as how these values are presented to the readers. With this as a starting-point we have studied what kind of society Aftonbladet presents to its readers as well as how this society is supposed to work and also what it`s like. To be able to answer this question we have first researched through theories and earlier studies, literature about journalism, media science, semiotics, history and laws. With the help of the investigation we found fitting tools to perform the analysis. With the theory as groundwork we have, through the qualitative approach analyzed seven news articles from seven Aftonbladet newspapers during one week. Our study shows that the Afonbladet’s journalists have not been able to present occurrences in society in a correct and impartial manner - because they exaggerate insignificant details and neglect to show real attention to serious societal structures by using sensationalism, dramatization and a very superficial approach to the stories that they are conveying. We have also been able to establish that it is impossible for journalists to follow up and live up to the ideals of journalism. Not only that, it’s also impossible for them to live up to the ideals that the Aftonbladet as a newspaper has assigned for itself. A probable explanation for this is that the journalism field is characterized by high productivity and demands that the news are supposed to be easily understood and have a specific news value. All of this combined amounts to that a lot of times the journalism becomes accentuated, one sided and simplified, all to lure readers every day because Aftonbladet’s main income comes from single copy sales.

Jonas-Kowalik, Matylda. "“No one knows who refugees really are” Discourses around the ‘refugee crisis’ in Poland : Analysis of selected mainstream media articles published from 2014 to 2017." Thesis, Malmö universitet, Malmö högskola, Institutionen för globala politiska studier (GPS), 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:mau:diva-40643.

Abstract:
The so-called refugee crisis was among the most significant events affecting European political and social structures during the previous decade. Previous research proves that the questions regarding refugee reception had instigated a rise of ethno-nationalistic and exclusionary sentiments across Europe. The Polish context has been a clear example. This study aims to analyze the ways in which Polish media produced and reproduced the discourse pertaining to the refugee crisis and subsequently the perceived representation of refugees. Based on the review of literature and theories of discourse, mediatization, politicization and Othering, selected mainstream media articles from 2014 to 2017 were analyzed. The findings illustrate that an exclusionary discourse and Islamophobic notions were prevalent during this period. Moreover, the results indicate that a discursive shift regarding the representation of refugees has occurred, significantly altering the manner in which Polish society perceives both refugees and the refugee crisis more generally.

Abstract:

Mauritzson, Maja, and Schewen Lina von. "”Anledningen: Hon hade träffat en annan man och ville skilja sig” : En textanalys av tidningsartiklars beskrivningar av mäns våld mot kvinnor." Thesis, Malmö universitet, Malmö högskola, Institutionen för socialt arbete (SA), 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:mau:diva-39397.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to investigate how articles from two well-known Swedish evening newspapers describe the violence that men use against women in close relationships. Furthermore, the study examined which causal explanations the newspaper articles use in the descriptions of the violence. This is done through a qualitative text analysis of newspaper articles' descriptions of violence. The results of the study have been thematized with a theoretical approach through the socio-ecological model and the National Board of Health and Welfare's definition of violence in close relationships. The media has proven to play a significant role in helping people understand social issues as what is described in the media often becomes people's reality. Therefore, it is important that the media provide a fair and correct picture of the large and widespread phenomenon that violence in close relationships constitutes. The results show that physical violence is the most described violence of newspaper articles. Furthermore, most causes of men's violence against women are described by newspaper articles with a structural perspective. Only one of all included newspaper articles describes men's violence against women in close relationships through all four perspectives of the socioecological model. The model which, in accordance with the National Board of Health and Welfare, is of great importance for obtaining a comprehensive description of men's violence against women in close relationships.
