Fournier, Shannon. "The Human Trafficking Crusade: A Content Analysis of Canadian Newspaper Articles." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/41403.

Full text
Abstract:
Although human trafficking was not a new concept, it gained increased attention across the United States and Canada in the first two decades of the 21st century. To better understand the Canadian anti-trafficking movement, this thesis analyzed the discourse on the topic in six local and national daily newspapers between 2008 and 2018. The goal of this thesis was to investigate the emergence of human trafficking as a social problem. Using social constructionism as a point of departure, a critical discourse analysis was conducted in NVivo of the quotes made by human trafficking experts in Canadian media. The results of this analysis suggest that an Unofficial Christian Coalition emerged in Canada, which – assisted by the media – led a moral crusade against human trafficking and pushed for the adoption of restrictive sex work legislation in Canada.

Abstract:
Mischlingskinder, also referred to as brown babies were the illegitimate children of African American occupation soldiers in post-World War II Germany. The complexities of their existence are often discussed in the context of national identity, racial identity and diplomacy. Their existence in Germany presented social struggles for the children as well as their mothers as a post Nazi German began towards society of racial acceptance. A few cases, through the cooperation of both the US and German government, some of the children were eligible for adoptions by African American families in America through the Brown Baby Adoption Plan. A thematic analysis was performed on 20 archived newspaper articles to uncover the different themes in which the children are discussed. My question is whether these themes connect to a lager theoretical concept of the “priceless child”. The results uncovered themes in which the brown babies were discussed which included their treatment in Germany, neglect, adoption and arrival in adoptive homes. The narratives of the children change over time in relation to the specific themes.

Abstract:

The present study seeks to add to the scholarly understanding of media coverage of trafficking by analyzing the content of articles on human trafficking published by the Washington Post and the New York Times in 2012 and 2013. Because the media have the potential to reach large numbers of the public and policymakers through the stories they tell, understanding exactly what the media are saying about trafficking and how that discourse changes over time can offer insight into the role of media in our society, particularly their ability to legitimize or challenge the dominant trafficking agenda. An analysis of trafficking articles also offers a chance to reexamine our perceptions -- if one of the major roles of the media in society is to educate or inform the public about social issues such as trafficking, then what perceptions are we being left with, and how accurate are they? By simultaneously focusing on these types of descriptive and theoretical research questions, this study adds to the growing literature on both fronts. The present study also partially replicates work conducted by another researcher for articles published between 1980 and 2006 in order to make comparisons between the two data sets and identify changes in the media coverage of trafficking over time.

Jakaza, Ernest. "Appraisal and evaluation in Zimbabwean parliamentary discourse and its representation in newspaper articles." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/79951.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: “Unofananidza Jesu naKombayi here? (Lit. Are you comparing Jesus with Kombayi?) (Condolences on the death of Senator Patrick Kombayi, 28th July 2009, Appendix B4, line 350) This Shona interjection during the debate on the motion on condolences on the death of Senator Patrick Kombayi (MDC- T) in the Zimbabwean parliament presents the speaker stance taking, appraising and strategically manoeuvering advancing certain argumentative positions. Considering the impact of the outcome of these debates on governance, discourse- analytic researches have to be carried out in order to explore the sorts of appraisal and argumentation principles that are realised. This study makes a multifaceted theoretical approach to a comprehensive exploration of debates and speeches in the Zimbabwean parliament and their representation in newspaper articles. The appraisal theory, the extended pragma- dialectic theory of argumentation and controversy analysis have been integrated to uncover important linguistic insights on parliamentary discourse and news reporting. The analysis is based on a corpus of debates and speeches in the Zimbabwean parliament within the period 2009 and 2010. Another corpus consists of newspaper reports on these debates and speeches in this period. A thematic approach informed by theoretical principles is utilised in the selection of reports, debates and speeches. Firstly, I examined parliamentary discourse. Focus have been on the critical discussion model, argumentative strategies- forms of strategic manoeuvering, how the dialectic- rhetoric relation can be understood, how appraisal resources are realised in the argumentation process and on examining how appraisal resources employed reflect the type of a debate or speech. Secondly, I explored newspaper articles from four Zimbabwean newspapers reporting on the same themes on debates and speeches. Focus has been to make comparative analysis of news reporting examining how appraisal resources are utilised in the representation of parliamentary discourse in different newspapers (independent versus government or state owned newspapers and English versus Shona newspapers) and to examine the nature of argumentation and strategic manoeuvering principles that are utilised in news reporting and how controversial (divergent) debates or issues are represented. This multifaceted analysis offered varied dimensions in the exploration of parliamentary discourse and news reporting and expansions of the appraisal and argumentation theories.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: “Unofananidza Jesu naKombayi here?

Abstract:
Paper 1: Self-contained literature review - This systematic review considered the literature exploring associations between socio-economic status and depression. Fourteen quantitative studies deemed to show quality and relevance were selected for inclusion. Results focussed on the areas of income, education, neighbourhood factors, social support and resilience and cognitive appraisal. Findings suggested that individual socio-economic status was significantly associated with depression, with income and education being a mediating factor. Neighbourhood socio-economic status appeared to compound this effect. Negative appraisal of personal and social status was also suggested to increase vulnerability to depression. The research considering the effectiveness of social support in promoting resilience was contradictory and required further exploration. Paper 2: Main research report - Following the release of the Depression Report in 2006, Professor Layard recommended increased funding be given to psychological services within the NHS, prompting the development of the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies agenda. This agenda paid particular focus to cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT). This study considered the way in which CBT was represented in eleven newspaper articles, post Layard, using critical discourse analysis. Findings suggested the presence of gendered accounts of mental illness. Individuals considered suitable for receiving CBT were often constructed as passive. CBT was not only suggested to be potent and fashionable, but also showed characteristics that were paralleled with concepts of masculinity. The text was seen to polarise in several ways, often marginalising other therapeutic approaches. Emerging discourses were found to frequently mirror wider socio-historical practices. Clinical implications of the findings and suggestions for future research were discussed and a critical appraisal of the research process included.

Iceton, Jennifer. "Media Representations of Abortion Politics in Florida: Feminist Geographic Analysis of Newspaper Articles, 2011-2013." Scholar Commons, 2016. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/6263.

Full text
Abstract:
Feminist geographers argue that gendered bodies and power are deeply entwined (McDowell 1992; Rose 1993). However, few geographers have investigated how gender and power interact in relation to the politics of abortion access. This thesis seeks to fill this gap by conducting a feminist content analysis of six newspapers from Florida’s three largest metropolitan areas to determine how articles featuring abortion are framed. Analysis of the dataset concludes that the politicization of the abortion debate results in the erasure of women from the conversation, the identification of a pregnant women trope which homogenizes all women into one category, and Planned Parenthood’s classification as a health care provider being ignored subsumed under a recognition of its role in providing abortion services. Overall this study argues that patriarchal institutions regulate women into compulsory motherhood, thereby constraining their agency and ability to fully participate in society participate in political democracy.

Abstract:
This paper analyzes some forms of linguistic manipulation in Japanese in newspapers when reporting on North Korea and its nuclear tests. The focus lies on lexical ambiguity in headlines and journalist’s voices in the body of the articles, that results in manipulation of the minds of the readers. The study is based on a corpus of nine articles from two of Japan’s largest newspapers Yomiuri Online and Asahi Shimbun Digital. The linguistic phenomenon that contribute to create manipulation are divided into Short Term Memory impact or Long Term Memory impact and examples will be discussed under each of the categories. The main results of the study are that headlines in Japanese newspapers do not make use of an ambiguous, double grounded structure. However, the articles are filled with explicit and implied attitudes as well as attributed material from people of a high social status, which suggests that manipulation of the long term memory is a tool used in Japanese media.

With the objective of investigating identity construction of teachers on strike through the observation of evaluative discourse in newspaper articles, this study analyses online articles, published by the newspapers O Globo and O Dia, during two periods in which the public school system of Rio de Janeiro entered on strike –from August to October, 2013 and from May to June, 2014. The investigation aims at discussing the following questions: 1) what identities of teachers on strike are constructed by the evaluative discourse of the newspaper articles? 2) how do the evaluative linguistic resources produce discourse which constructs these identities? 3) what ideological meanings are generated by the discourse of the articles analysed, suggesting relations of power and dominance involving teachers on strike? Adopting an interdisciplinary focus, the study is based on Martin s (2005) telelogical perspective of discourse genres; on the sociosemiotic approach to language proposed by Systemic-Functional Linguistics (Halliday, 1994), particularly on the resources of Appraisal Theory as well as on the tenets of Critical Discourse Analysis (Chouliaraki and Fairclough, 1999) and on the socioconstructionist theories of identity (Moita Lopes , 2003; Hall 2005; Bauman, 2005; Duszak 2002). Results suggest the construction of multiple identities of teachers on strike, most of them negative, such as: aggressive, riotous, troublemakers, uncompromising, irresponsible and, in a positive manner, courageous. Amongst the theoretical contributions of the study, it is highlighted the rich interface between social and critical linguistic approaches which understand the linguistic phenomenon as cultural and sociohistorically situated. Regarding my teaching practice –and that of other teachers from the public school system who recognise the strike as a legitimate right –, the study provided the reflection on how educators have their identities discursively constructed by journalists in the media.

Heywood, Crystal. "A Critical discourse analysis of word choices surrounding ethnic identities of sexual exploitation victims and perpetrators in Canadian newspaper articles." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/45039.

Full text
Abstract:
Language used in the media to depict sexually exploited youth reflects societal assumptions that manifest in the health and well-being of these young people. Using Critical discourse analysis (CDA), this study examined word choice usage in 144 Canadian newspaper articles, attending specifically to the ethnicity of the victims and the perpetrators of sexual exploitation. The purpose of the study was to examine how power placement and to gain insight into how society perceives those involved in the sexual exploitation of youth. This study utilized both quantitative and qualitative analysis strategies. The results of the CDA suggest that society identifies that the sexual exploitation of youth in Canada is a problem; however, for the most part, society is not intervening. The findings also illustrate that the ethnic identities of the victims of sexual exploitation are more frequently revealed than the perpetrators. The victims of abuse are often from minority ethnic backgrounds; however, youth from a number of countries have been exploited. The almost invisibility of the exploiters of abuse who represent positions of power and trust, and whose ethnic identities are Caucasian support the concept of white privilege being present in society’s view of the sexual exploitation of youth. The results of the CDA support the need for culturally safe and competent nursing interventions for both the victims and perpetrators of sexual exploitation.

Abstract:
This research sought to explore media framing theory, first introduced by Erving Goffman, which asserts that the media portray certain items in a way that affects awareness, salience and tone of those items. There has long been debate about media framing especially as it pertains to the framing of violent events. Mass shootings are of particular interest because of the graphic and often senseless nature of the crime. This study looked particularly at the 2011 Tucson, Arizona mass shooting. A content analysis of articles between February 7, 2010, and November 8, 2011, was conducted to explore media framing of gun control after the Tucson, Arizona mass shooting involving U. S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords. Results showed an equal amount of articles with a negative or neutral tone, with the tone shifting to being more frequently neutral after the shooting. The topic shifted toward legislation, adding further support to media framing theory. These findings have impacts for media and public relations.

Full text
Abstract:
A key element in cultural and gender power relations surrounding abortion is how women who undergo an abortion are represented in public talk. We analyse how women were named and positioned, and the attendant constructions of abortion, in South African newspaper articles on abortion from 1978 to 2005, a period during which there were radical political and legislative shifts. The name ‘woman’ was the most frequently used (70% of articles) followed by ‘girl/teenager/child’ (25%), ‘mother’ (25%), ‘patient’ (11%) and ‘minor’ (6%). The subject positionings enabled by these names were dynamic and complex and were interwoven with the localised, historical politics of abortion. The ‘innocent mother’ and the bifurcated ‘patient’ (woman/foetus) positionings were invoked in earlier epochs to promote abortion under medical conditions. The ‘dangerous mother’ and woman as ‘patient’ positionings were used more frequently under liberal abortion legislation to oppose and to advocate for abortion, respectively. The positioning of the ‘girl/teenager/child’ as dependent and vulnerable was used in contradictory ways, both to oppose abortion and to argue for a liberalisation of restrictive legislation, depending on the attendant construction of abortion. The neutral naming of ‘woman’ was, at times, linked to the liberal imaginary of ‘choice’.

Abstract:
This study aims to examine two daily newspapers and three travel magazines’ production of Dark Tourism, and find out what differences and similarities the petitions have. The aim is also to find an in-depth understanding of Dark Tourism and the different perspectives and common features found in the articles. The empirical material consists of 25 articles, of which 15 were from daily newspapers and 10 come from travel magazines. A critical discourse analysis has been applied as a method in this study and the results show that two different discourses, one of which is melancholic and the other is sanguine, characterizes these journal genres. It is also clear that the discourses that prevail in the newspapers can have a big impact on people's perception of the phenomenon of Dark Tourism.   Keywords: Dark Tourism, Discourse, Newspaper Articles, Critical Discourse Analysis, Media

Abstract:
The following master thesis analyzes to which extent streaming services in particularNetflix influence the German television landscape and how this discourse is covered inGerman newspapers. The work shows that online streaming services with their non-linear content have animpact on German television. The theoretical base of the work is the critical discourseanalysis by the German linguist Siegfried Jäger. His work analyzes relevant socialdiscourses with its own method based on the theory of the French philosopher MichelFoucault. The present thesis refers to Netflix as a streaming service and analyzes theaspect of how it influences the television landscape since its introduction on the Germanmarket in 2014. For deeper understanding before conducting the critical discourse aninitial analysis of the German television market is presented. The base of the analysisare newspaper articles. Furthermore, the relevant aspects of the publishing landscape inGermany are introduced to provide the reader with relevant background knowledge. Moreover, the thesis contains an analysis of newspaper articles from three leadingnewspapers in Germany: Süddeutsche Zeitung, BILD Zeitung and taz, die tageszeitung(following referred to as taz). 15 representative articles were chosen and afterwardsanalyzed with the method of critical discourse analysis. The results of all threenewspapers on the Netflix discourse are compared to each other. In conclusion, thework shows that the influence of streaming services, especially Netflix on Germantelevision is stronger then expected. And even if television is still seen as the leadingmedium in Germany, public as well as private broadcasters have to be aware of the newcompetitor on the market and adapt to constant changes especially in the online segment.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study has been to find out what possibilities the journalists at the newspaper Aftonbladet have to live up to the proposed ideas and values that defines journalism, as well as how these values are presented to the readers. With this as a starting-point we have studied what kind of society Aftonbladet presents to its readers as well as how this society is supposed to work and also what it`s like. To be able to answer this question we have first researched through theories and earlier studies, literature about journalism, media science, semiotics, history and laws. With the help of the investigation we found fitting tools to perform the analysis. With the theory as groundwork we have, through the qualitative approach analyzed seven news articles from seven Aftonbladet newspapers during one week. Our study shows that the Afonbladet’s journalists have not been able to present occurrences in society in a correct and impartial manner - because they exaggerate insignificant details and neglect to show real attention to serious societal structures by using sensationalism, dramatization and a very superficial approach to the stories that they are conveying. We have also been able to establish that it is impossible for journalists to follow up and live up to the ideals of journalism. Not only that, it’s also impossible for them to live up to the ideals that the Aftonbladet as a newspaper has assigned for itself. A probable explanation for this is that the journalism field is characterized by high productivity and demands that the news are supposed to be easily understood and have a specific news value. All of this combined amounts to that a lot of times the journalism becomes accentuated, one sided and simplified, all to lure readers every day because Aftonbladet’s main income comes from single copy sales.

Abstract:

The present work is constituted of four main parts, each one dedicated to a topic. In the introduction, it will be told which problems were rose to the study, how they shall be approached and which objectives are expected to be reached. On chapter I, it will be done a brief review of the literature that approaches important historic aspects to comprehend the context of this works production. The next chapter makes some comments regarding the treatment given to the matter that engendered the research. The fourth chapter envolves the direct application of the theory previously exposed. This dissertation applies the linguistic theory known as Discourse Analysis (DA) from the french branch in order to analyse articles taken from the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo between the years of 1942 and 1948, a stage chosen for being delimited by the Shoah and the declaration of independence from the State of Israel.

Abstract:
The object of this study was to get a wider picture of the articles published in the Swedish online newspaper Nyheter24. The newspaper is the biggest newspaper only coming out online in Sweden today and basically the idea was to get an overview of their content. The study was based upon two research questions: “What does Nyheter24 write about?” and “What type of journalism does Nyheter24 make?” My research method was a quantitative content analysis and the study contains 550 articles in total, gathered during two weeks time from the website. The results show that Nyheter24 writes about various topics but they tend to produce news stories with an odd or sensational angle. More than half of the articles studied in the news section were rewrites from other news media and less than 20 % of the articles in the same section had quotes from interviews done by the newspaper themselves. In the sports section, just one of all the articles published in the section during the two weeks contained a quote from an interview Nyheter24 had done. The study does also show that investigative journalism is rare at Nyheter24. But it was even more uncommon, zero articles in the news section, for the journalists to do reports of places or news events by going outside the newsroom. What played a bigger part in the news from Nyheter24 was social media. Especially the sports section and the entertainment section published stories where social media was the origin of the story. Generally the results show what several other researchers have found out about online journalism. There is a big recycling of news and the journalists tend to be stuck behind a computer, screening websites and doing rewrites to publish a lot of material quickly. Doing interviews to the stories seemed to have a lower priority.

Abstract:
Aware of the well-studied non-neutrality of media and the challenge that represents to have mechanisms to objectively identify the ideological bias, this thesis provides a methodological proposal to assess the political ideology of newspapers. The model’s originality lies on merging the contribution from political and communication sciences, as it is built considering the core values of political ideologies. The model is qualitatively inspired by the Critical Discourse Analysis perspective, and quantitatively by the traditional Content Analysis. It allows to compare samples according to an ideological framework and classify the outlets in four categories: elitism, egalitarianism, communitarianism and individualism. The model was applied to study the one-year time frame (2018) of editorial content (n=2,195) from the eight most read online newspapers in Brazil. The results show the feasibility of the model and draw a scenario dominated by a strong elitist discourse with only one off-key Brazilian newspaper leaning towards an egalitarian worldview.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to analyse how physical activity in the prevention and treatment of diseases, is portrayed in Vietnamese media. This is interesting because the traditional Vietnamese health culture differs a lot from the Western one. The topic is also of immediate importance in Vietnam, because of the increasing numbers of diseases, such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, even called non-communicable diseases. This is connected to the decreasing physical activity and increasing obesity in the country. A Swedish-Vietnamese project in Vietnam is going on since two years, with the aim of disseminating Swedish experiences on the topic to the health care staff and the general public. Thirty-one articles have been analysed with regard to cultural references and persuasion means. The methods include rhetorical analysis, quantitative content analysis and semiotics. The theoretical framework constitutes of previous research on characteristics of Vietnamese/Asian journalism in general, and Vietnamese preventive health education in particular. To get a better understanding of the results, various theories such as post-colonialism and cultural hegemony have been used. The findings indicate that the articles portray the health-benefits of physical activity as something new to the Vietnamese people. It was not possible to find any point of similarity to the traditional forms of Vietnamese preventive health propaganda in the articles. The different references in the articles where mostly made to Western sources. The pictures in the articles signal both threat/fear and hope and they portray both people with East Asian-and Western appearance.

This dissertation seeks to analyze the concept of terrorism that can be found in the news articles from two main American newspapers - The New York Times and The Washington Post - in the period between the attacks of september 11 and the war against the Taliban government in Afghanistan. As parameters to the analysis, we used questions raised from two main academic debates related to the concept of terrorism. That refers to the debate about legitimacy and the use of political violence and to the debate about the existence of a new terrorism in the contemporary world. Our proposal was to disclose some of the answers to this academic questions that can be found in the content of the articles, in the aftermath of the greatest terrorist attacks in history.

Abstract:
The so-called refugee crisis was among the most significant events affecting European political and social structures during the previous decade. Previous research proves that the questions regarding refugee reception had instigated a rise of ethno-nationalistic and exclusionary sentiments across Europe. The Polish context has been a clear example. This study aims to analyze the ways in which Polish media produced and reproduced the discourse pertaining to the refugee crisis and subsequently the perceived representation of refugees. Based on the review of literature and theories of discourse, mediatization, politicization and Othering, selected mainstream media articles from 2014 to 2017 were analyzed. The findings illustrate that an exclusionary discourse and Islamophobic notions were prevalent during this period. Moreover, the results indicate that a discursive shift regarding the representation of refugees has occurred, significantly altering the manner in which Polish society perceives both refugees and the refugee crisis more generally.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study has been to shed light on the notion of tall buildings in thecontemporary architecture and urban planning discourse in the Swedish media. By concretizingwhich ideas and values are expressed, we have also made visible which viewpoints that positiondebaters for or against the phenomenon. Discourse analysis has been used as a theory andmethod based on social constructivism, where discourses through visual and verbal rhetoric areconsidered to construct social reality. For this study, 23 selected articles from the daily pressand the scientific press constituted the empirical material. The results show three paralleldiscourses that can be distinguished in the statements, which are Position of Power,Architectural quality and The city is changing. The conclusions show that criticism of the highrise debate can be linked to ideas about rational planning and distaste for the functionalistplanning ideal of the 1960s. The conclusions also show that contemporary discourses becomea guideline for what should be prioritized from a planning and development context. The mediahas a great deal of influence over which discourses are noticed, and consequently which issuesare prominent in the development of society.

Gender differences is rooted in all societies and it is manifested in many different forms. In the context of media communication, studies on magazines, printed press, advertisements commonly discuss how media use their photos, pictures, word choices, and sentences to reflect or to affect people on their perceptions of males and females. To explore gender difference in the media context, this study investigated the use of adjectives in three main newspapers in Taiwan and discussed how such usage reflects people’s perceptions of males and females. The selected adjectives are from three main newspapers in Taiwan; they are UDN, LT and AD. A total of 68 columns were collected. Adjectives were selected based on three criteria: (a) they appear in all the three three newspapers (b) they are used to describe both males and females (c) they appear in the columns of best actress/actor award (BAA) from Golden Horse Award (GHA) and in the columns of the dressing criticized columns (DCC) from GHA. The results of the study show that adjectives such as 大 dà ' wide, big or large in volume, square measure, numbers, capacity, age, etc' and 資深 zī shēn ‘experienced' are male-oriented and have positive meaning. Adjectives such as 青春 qīng chūn ‘young’, 細膩(的) xì nì (de) ‘exquisite and delicate’, and大方 dà fāng ‘to describe one's appearance is dazzling’ are female-oreinted and have positive meaning. The adjective 小 xiǎo 'narrow, little or few in volume, square measure, numbers, capacity, age, etc' is a female-oriented adjective but has negative meaning to descibe both males and females. The results indicate that some of frequently used adjectives such as 大 dà, 完美 wán měi, 成熟 (的) chéng shú (de) and 細膩(的) xì nì (de) are maintained or reinforced gender stereotypes by news media to reflect or affect people’s perceptions.

"Constructions of Motherhood and Fatherhood in Newspaper Articles on Maternal and Paternal Postpartum Depression." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10388/ETD-2014-08-1170.

Full text
Abstract:
Postpartum depression (PPD) is a medicalized condition that exists on a continuum of postpartum mood disorders. PPD is reported to be experienced by 10-15% of mothers and 10% of fathers during pregnancy or after the birth of a baby. PPD, as experienced by either parent, is considered a serious condition because of its potential short- and long-term negative impacts on the developing child. In this thesis I explore how motherhood and fatherhood are constructed in the context of articles on maternal and paternal PPD in Canadian and American newspapers. Specifically, I focus on how references to the opposite partner were used to position each parent, and how each parent was positioned with respect to the new baby. In the articles on maternal PPD, husbands were either inconsequential to the story, positioned as being absent, or constructed as supporting the mother through instrumental and action-oriented behaviours. In addition, mothers were constructed as lonely and isolated because of self-imposed limitations (e.g., feeling ashamed for not being happy). In the articles on paternal PPD, the mother-father relationship was based on differences and competition. Fathers were constructed as isolated, lonely and misunderstood, most often through mother-blaming, such as by positioning the mother as responsible for the father’s well-being (e.g., causing his PPD), and by labelling PPD “a woman’s domain.” Fathers’ loneliness was presented as being due to imposed limitations of others (e.g., others did not properly prepare fathers for fatherhood). Mothering was constructed as being instinctually skilled, tolerant, and self-sacrificing, with the inherent capability to manage multiple roles and changes. The mother-baby relationship was constructed as naturally joyful, all-important and –consuming. Fathers were not expected to be as skilled or instinctively prepared and tolerant, to engage in chores/childcare, or to be explicitly overjoyed with the baby. Mothers were blamed for their distress in the role, while others were blamed for fathers’ distresses. Gendered stereotypes in the parenting role were perpetuated in these newspaper articles. Parenthood was not constructed as a collaboration, but rather motherhood and fatherhood stood in isolation from each other, with motherhood positioned as the primary role. These constructions continue to maintain fathers in the background of parenthood as an “other,” and to position mothers as responsible for the well-being of her partner, child(ren) and herself.

Specific Aims: Prevention and management of depression have become serious issues in today’s health policy. Because women constitute a large portion of depressive patients, the wide-spreading discourses of depressive disorders often target at women. Through the medicalization of women’s suffering, medical professions obtain the power to interpret and manage women’s problems. This thesis is aimed to examine gender bias and politics in the discourses of depressive disorders. Methods: The samples were drawn from the databank of United Daily News in Taiwan. In the first part of this thesis, we carried out a quantitative content analysis of articles about depressive disorders, examined gender differences in case illustrations, symptoms descriptions and disease attributions. In the second and major part, we use qualitative methods to analyze and interpret gender implications in the discourses of depressive disorders. Results: The opinions about depressive disorders in newspaper articles mainly come from medical professions. But instead of empirical knowledge, they are contaminated by personal and social prejudices of sexism. The articles over-present women in case illustrations, describe more symptoms for women and excessively label women as depressive patients. Most explanations of depressive disorders are based of patriarchal view and tend to blame women. The biological explanations of depression give undue emphasis to women’s physical diathesis and neglect women’s difficult social situations. The so-called “psycho-social” explanations of depression are limited to gender stereotype, or even worse, act to discipline women’s behavior. The discourses of premenstrual, postpartum and menopausal depression pathologize women’s lifetime and reveal the “double-bound” social expectations of women’s role.

Abstract:
This treatise is a study of media-related articles in the South African press February 1996 to April 1999. Through a discourse analysis approach, the treatise identifies two main discourses relating to normative press models: the watchdog discourse and the nation-building discourse. It is argued that the watchdog discourse largely resembles classical libertarian press ideals, while the nation-building discourse resembles social responsibility ideals. The analysis contains numerous examples of the tensions between the government and the newspaper industry in terms of normative press models. Finally, the treatise challenges the assumed tensions that exist between nation-building and watchdog discourses, and suggests communitarianism as an ideology which upholds the crucial interests of both the press and the government.

Abstract:
The HPV vaccine (Gardasil) is a significant advancement in women’s health that garnered both positive and negative media coverage. Since public opinion and population uptake of the vaccine can be influenced by media coverage, the purpose of this study was to assess the discussion and presentation of risk information about HPV, cervical cancer and the HPV vaccine in Canadian and U.S. newspapers and news magazines. Using directed content analysis, the reporting of fear-inducing messages about HPV, cervical cancer and the HPV vaccine were compared between Canadian and U.S. top-circulating national newspapers between January 2006—December 2007. Significant differences between countries were found in the number of fear messages about cervical cancer (p < 0.05) but not for HPV or the HPV vaccine. Readability was higher than recommended for the public and emotional tone of the articles was progressively negative. Directed content analysis was also used to assess the discussion of risks, fear-inducing messages about HPV, cervical cancer and the HPV vaccine in four high circulating North American news magazines from January 2006—December 2007. Risk messages about HPV and cervical cancer focused on threatening illness or injury and reporting on the HPV vaccine emphasized it being poorly understood by science. Newspaper and news magazine articles on HPV, cervical cancer and the HPV vaccine included fear-inducing messages. Public health officials and health educators need to be aware of media reporting of fear based risk messages in order to alleviate public anxiety and concern about the HPV vaccine.

In this thesis, we present an automatic system to segment title characters in newspaper efficiently. The character segmentation system contains two modules: article analysis and character segmentation. In the article analysis module, we first perform image reduction and connected-component extraction. The large connected-components are next classified as picture blocks, table blocks, graph blocks, and frame blocks, and the small components are classified into text components or title components. After large block classification, we merge all text components into text blocks and merge all title components into title blocks. An article in newspaper is then extracted by performing six relation tests. In the character segmentation module, we extract bi-lines from title blocks. Then we segment Chinese characters, English letters and numerals in title lines. Touched characters are separated according to the average size. In our experiments, the character segmentation rate is about 98.9%. The correct block classification rate is about 97%. This shows the effectiveness of our proposed system.

In the 2002 FIFA World Cup, Germany had totally seven matches. Eleven reports (six from Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and five from Süddeutsche Zeitung) about the first and the last of these seven matches are analysed with text linguistic methods in this thesis, which is divided into five chapters. Chapter one is about the motivation and the structure of the thesis. The text linguistic theory, which is based on the book Linguistische Textanalyse (written by Klaus Brinker), is expounded in the chapter 2. Besides, the analytic steps and the related terms of the thesis are also explained in this chapter. The third chapter describes the media landscape in Germany first, and then the studies of newspaper language are also discussed. At last, the development of modern football and the importance of football to German are also revealed in the same chapter. Chapter four is the main part of text analyses in the whole thesis. Each report is analysed in three different aspects, the thematic, grammatical and communicative aspects. The thematic aspect is about the main and the minor topics of each report. Then in the grammatical aspect, the compounds, borrowed or foreign words, attributes etc. of each report are listed in the tabular form. Finally, what the authors really want to express, is analysed in the communicative aspect. Here are altogether eleven reports about two matches analysed, six of them are about Germany’s first match against Saudi Arabia, while the rest five of them are about the final match Germany against Brazil. At last, the conclusion of the thesis is reached in chapter five. Hopefully, this study can be some help for the people, who are interested in the related theme or football.

Abstract:
Background: South-Africa has a long standing history of migration. Yet in 2008 the country experienced unprecedented waves of xenophobic violence against foreigners in a number of townships around the province of Gauteng. In the aftermath negative sentiments seemed to have developed against foreign nationals. The media is a power tool in the creation of such sentiments. Through images, language, voices and representation of individuals and groups media outlets may have significant impact on the perception of its audiences on their realities. This research aimed to investigate in what ways two South-African newspapers have depicted African migrants in relation to their health and healthcare services. In resource scare settings such as South-Africa, a competition for limited services in combination with an increase of users may have contributed to a xenophobic environment. To examine this hypothesis, articles were investigated for their language use and underpinning discourses. Methods: For the analysis two Gauteng English-speaking newspapers were selected (The Star, The Sowetan). Data were retrieved from the online archive of Wits University library and selected through inclusion and exclusion criteria. Using a Jäger’s structural and fine analysis approaches, a form of critical discourse analysis, articles were analyzed according to their use of rhetoric, metaphors, subjects, voices, power relations and institutional forms of power. Furthermore, authors were investigated and all articles summarized as well as examined for their tone and atmosphere. Moreover, articles’ data were checked for their accuracy. Results and Discussion: Publications in the two newspapers on the subject of health and migration were infrequent with 38 articles between 2008 and 2015. The overall impressions of articles varied but the majority did not frame migrants negatively. Information on the authors was not readily available. Metaphors were framed around the supposedly high numbers of migrants entering the country (waves, masses, etc.). A significant word choice was the word illegal which was often used to imply a criminal act. However, many articles conveyed equally empathic views on the difficult positions of migrants. Moreover, othering through the creation of inside and outside groups were a recurrent form of presenting migrants. Several terms around foreign nationals were used interchangeably to speak about migrants irrespective of their legal status. The majority of migrants articles referred to were Zimbabweans (68%) which was often associated with a negative image. Data use in articles was difficult to confirm or reject as accurate data were not easily accessible. Both newspapers allowed various voices to be heard. There was no evidence for misuse of institutional forms of power. Overall, the main discourses in the articles were around cross-border migration and health risks, the poor management of migration, the use of resources by migrants and the health status of migrants living in South-Africa. Results are limited by the researcher’s bias based on her gender, nationality and social background which also limited the choice of data sources to English speaking newspapers. As a non-native English speaker, linguistic nuances may have gone unnoticed. Moreover, certain information was not available, including data on the authors or the layout of the articles. Lastly, this research limited itself to xenophobia against cross-border migrants and not internally displaced people or xenophobia between ethnic groups. Conclusion and Recommendations: Both newspapers fail to account for the different stories behind cross-border movements. Neither of the newspapers gave particular space to the subject itself.

Abstract:
The research that concerns a PhD, was developed under the project of PhD in education. We leave the question - which relations can be identified between opinion articles concerning Education published in two leading newspapers and the values and aspirations defended by the new middle class? We tried, therefore, look at the school from an outside point of view: the discourse of opinion articles published by Diário de Notícias e Público, between Ocotober 2004 and September 2006. In the media, the school is considered undemanding, although is also described as a promoter of social inequalities; and the teacher’s pedagogical practices seen as few effective. On the other hand, we understand that the opinion makers are able to guide, build and legitimize the social reality; these capabilities allow them to condition the public opinion. Through a quantitative methodology, we interviewed directors of the newspapers that we studied, parents and teachers. We tried to do a critical discourse analysis at the 20 opinion articles that we choose to study. Our investigation has supported initially in Basil Bernstein that studied middle class and Phillip Brown. Because some of the studied opinion articles allow us to raise the hypothesis that they assume and legitimize parentocracy, this concept was introduced by Phillip Brown (1990) to mention parents higher participation in children’s school life, namely the free choice of the school they will attend. However, other articles seem to defend that the investment in school capital is made through a knowledge centred pedagogy, coming close to the demands of meritocracy. It is our belief that it is essential to understand the intentions and the consequences of opinion articles related to school. So the idea that parents would be able to choose which school their child would attend is not covert manner to leave to the implementation of a stratificated system, with an increase of social privileges to those who already had them? However, the School may rather be understood as an element that cans effectively promoting standards of justice inherent to a democratic society.
