This chapter explores how today’s and perhaps future young people in Sápmi shape their Sami identity through narratives from seven young coastal Sámi in a coastal Sámi community. In the official definition from the Norwegian Sámi Parliament (Sámi Parliament, 2023), having a Sámi-speaking great-grandparent and identifying as Sámi oneself is sufficient to be considered Sámi and included as a voter. However, there are other definitions and approaches to being Sami, outside the public system, that have a severe impact on young people, for example on various websites, blogs and digital newspapers.
