Bartlett, Ciarán M. G. "A history of newspaper journalism in Belfast, 1855-1910." Thesis, Ulster University, 2014. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.650078.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the character, content and legacy of newspaper journalism in Belfast between 1855 and 1910. It locates Belfast's press at this time as the successor of more radical journalism in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, and as a predecessor of the tabloid style or 'New Journalism ' which did not properly take hold in the North until the early twentieth century. Newspapers in Belfast at this time were sectarian, fragmented, overtly political, capitalist, decreasingly radical and highly competitive. Their coverage used an array of literary devices including language, layout, genre and rhetoric to convey meaning to their audiences. They not only reflected Belfast society but also acted as an influence on politics and publics order. They were a vital part of business and social aspects of the civic sphere. The key newspapers of the period of study were the Belfast News Letter, the Belfast Morning News/Irish News, and the Belfast Telegraph. These newspapers continue to exist as dailies and are still capable of providing insight into contemporary Belfast society. The legacy of the Belfast press between 1855 and 1910 can still be identified when it comes to understanding the same newspapers in a 21st Century setting. Until now, newspapers of this period have been used by historians as sources of factual information and historical detail rather than studied in their own right as important social, political, economic and cultural institutions in a developing Victorian city. This thesis provides a taxonomic survey of Belfast's newspapers before exploring newspaper content thematically in terms of sectarianism, business, constitutional and militant nationalism, and socialism. It references previous work by Anderson (1983), Conboy (2004, 2011), Palmegiano (2007), Wolff (1971), Pykett (1990) and others with a view to providing a strong theoretical framework which locates Belfast's press as part of a wider Irish press which must be understood fully before it can be compared to other nations' presses in the Victorian age. The thesis thus makes a major contribution to the field as it is the first rigorously academic document chronicling the history of the North of Ireland's foremost group of newspapers.

Sheese, Charlie Allan. "Newspaper Construction of Homelessness in Western United States Cities." PDXScholar, 2017. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/3676.

Full text
Abstract:
The paths to homelessness are complex and attributable to a combination of structural issues associated with poverty that can magnify personal vulnerabilities. However, as homelessness became more prominent in news media during the 1980s, media discourse increasingly focused on personal characteristics within the homeless population which cast people as personally responsible for their plight. Simultaneously, media explanations for homelessness that called attention to structural conditions that contribute to homelessness decreased during the decade. Scholars explain this shift by situating it within the social and political climate of the time. This study extends the line of research on homelessness in news media in order to understand how coverage of homelessness has changed between the 1980s and the 2010s. A quantitative content analysis examines newspaper articles in two cities in the western United States -- Portland, Oregon, and San Diego, California -- where homelessness is a prominent and enduring social and political issue. News articles are examined for changes between two time periods (1988-1990 and 2014-2016) in mentions of personal and structural factors as well as changes in the discussion of solutions for homelessness. Results show an increase over time in portrayals of structural factors that contribute to homelessness as well as an increase in talk about permanent housing solutions. However, mentions of personal problems and behaviors, such as mental illness and substance abuse, have also increased. This suggests that, while news discourse may be moving toward more nuanced portrayals that acknowledge societal factors, news media still tend to focus on characteristics of homelessness that can cast people as personally culpable.

Miller, Sydney A. "Peaceful Verses: Political Ideology in Newspaper Poetry of the War of 1812." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2013. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/679.

Full text
Abstract:
Both the Centinel and the Republican were publishing during a period when newspapers became increasingly partisan. Editors were changing from largely nonpartisan craftsman to advocates of party policy. Newspapers aligned with the two political parties of the day, the Federalists and the Democratic-Republicans. As statements of political ideology, these papers reveal not only partisan polarization, but also the parties’ shared ideological roots. Though the Federalists and Republicans responded to British aggression in very different ways (one wanting peace at any cost, the other militarization), their reactions paradoxically stem from a common Enlightenment theory of “universal peace,” which held republics to be inherently peaceful institutions. The patriotic poems of the Republican and the Centinel support the idea of a bipartisan reluctance to go to war that J.C.A. Stagg, George Daughan, and Alan Taylor allude to in their comprehensive histories of the war of 1812. The theory of “universal peace” made both Federalists and republicans felt that the belligerent empires were forcing the United States into a military conflict that ill-suited its republican form of government.

Rydland, Christoffer. "Aspects of Cooperation and Corporate Governance in the Swedish Regional Newspaper Industry."

Abstract:
The Swedish newspaper industry was for many years characterized by geographically separated markets. This allowed for open discussions and learning. In addition, economic objectives were often not expressed by the owners of the newspaper companies. This dissertation analyzes two organizations which mirrored these distinctive traits of the industry. The Lindesberg Group (1956-2008) was a secretive group of CEOs. It is described how this group started in a time of crisis to share experiences, how it developed an intricate system of benchmarking, but later transformed into an exclusive personal network with a reputation of power and influence in the media industry. Centertidningar AB (1973-2005) was a group of newspapers owned by the Centre Party. The newspapers were originally acquired to promote a political message, but they soon turned into a profit generator. This dissertation shows that the orientation for profit came from the managers rather than from the owner, and how the managers took complete control from the politicians but made the Party rich. Comparisons to other organizational forms are made, such as the open price associations. Theories of interfirm cooperation and corporate governance are used. An inverse relation between hierarchical integration and open discussions is found. It is shown that many board functions can be replicated by managers. The dissertation is of interest to scholars in business history, media economics, governance, accounting, and organization studies. Christoffer Rydland is a researcher at the Department of Marketing and Strategy (MaST) and EHFF at the Stockholm School of Economics. He is also the illustrator of the cover. A seabird, standing on a small stone, represents the leader's loneliness in the hierarchy. A sea mark on the horizon represents his search for navigation. (Lake Siljan, Midsummer 2009.)

ZOU, Yizheng. "An English newspaper for British and Chinese : The South China Morning Post study (1903-1941)." Digital Commons @ Lingnan University, 2014. https://commons.ln.edu.hk/his_etd/6.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis studies the relationship between the South China Morning Post and its audiences. To be viable and profitable in the Hong Kong media market, the SCMP had to meet the various needs of its Chinese and British readership. For example, British readers were serious sports fans and the SCMP endeavoured to be the best newspaper to target its wealthy British audience who was obsessed with the game of lawn bowls. Because playing fields were mainly granted to the British ex-pats over Chinese citizens, the sports pages of the SCMP mainly attracted British audiences. Chinese readers were generally merchants who were concerned about their businesses in China and Hong Kong. Hong Kong as an international trade and shipping centre provided both the SCMP and Chinese merchants an opportunity to grow through Chinese and British Imperial business networks. As a result, the SCMP represented the interests of Chinese merchants in its various reporting about China in the first half of the twentieth century. Although the Hong Kong government executed a strict censorship against the Chinese press, the SCMP was free from censorship most of the time; consequently, it could publish sensitive and important events that Chinese subscribers desired to read and comment upon. In particular, Chinese audiences could express their concerns and attempt to mould the opinions of other readers because of reports, editorials and correspondence published in the SCMP. While the Chinese had limited influence in the British colonial government, the SCMP played an important role in improving Chinese audience freedom of expression and its social position in the course of consensus building in Hong Kong. In this manner, the SCMP had an economic, political and social function in the making of Hong Kong in the first half of twentieth century.

Abstract:
The subject of this study concerns the history and development of the newspaper press in the town of Reading from 1855, the year of the repeal of the Newspaper Stamp Tax, until 1980. In particular the approach to this account of provincial press history has been primarily from the production viewpoint, in which the newspapers are seen as business enterprises, emphasis being placed on the patterns of ownership and processes of production rather than on readership and newspaper content.

Park, Annie. "Still Outcasts: Newspaper Discourse Surrounding People with Mental Illnesses in Korea Post-1950." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2019. https://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/2176.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is motivated by a lack of studies on the history of mental illness in South Korea. It builds upon existing studies by historians Theodore Yoo and Bang Hyun Lee, who have also used newspapers to analyze the discourse surrounding mental illness during Colonial Korea (1910-1945). Specifically, I analyze newspapers in the decades following this period to revisit three themes that both Yoo and Lee noted about the colonial period: (1) the religious practice of hitting individuals with mental illnesses, (2) the strong support for the sterilization of people with mental illnesses, and (3) the association between crime and mental illness. Because the colonial period was when people with mental illnesses were increasingly treated as social outcasts, comparing shifts or continuances from the colonial period was useful in exploring the stigma attached to mental illness in Korea. The articles surrounding the first theme revealed that despite the stigma attached to Shamanistic practices of beating during the colonial period due to a growing biomedical understanding of mental illness, they surprisingly persisted. There were also new developments, in which people with mental illnesses were beaten, chained, and isolated in “treatment” institutions across the nation for no particular reason. Articles surrounding the second theme showed that though inflamed rhetoric surrounding sterilization operations were not found post-1950, rhetoric with eugenics undertones lingered. Newspapers reported on these inhumane practices until as late as 1999. For the third theme, this study finds that the press continued to strongly associate mental illness with crime. These associations that effectively equated individuals with mental illnesses to criminals still frequently occur in newspapers today, particularly with what the media calls “Don’t Ask” crimes. Based on these findings, this study discovers that the negative treatment and perception of people with mental illnesses persisted long beyond Colonial Korea. It also stresses the importance of examining the role the press plays in contributing to the stigma attached to mental illness and shaping the way mental illness is understood.

Abstract:
Few historians have examined the portrayals of China by British writers during the nineteenth century. Although Britain lead all other western powers in the penetration, exploration and exploitation of the Chinese Empire during the nineteenth century, British perceptions of China, particularly during the critical final decades of the century, have only been presented as small parts of larger comprehensive surveys of western images of China. Historians agree that as a result of Britain's active role in China, British writers were the leading transmitters of information about China to the West, especially after the formal 'opening' of China by treaty after 1860. However, no one has adequately addressed the question of what information was available to the British reading public during the period from 1860 to 1900. As source material for their conclusions about British perceptions of the Chinese, historians have relied exclusively on a small number of books about China published in the late nineteenth century. They have overlooked the tremendous amount of source material available in British magazines and newspapers from the late nineteenth century. The periodical and newspaper press was the leading source of information for nineteenth century British readers. Therefore, a complete examination of British perceptions of China requires some examination of this material. A survey of more than 200 articles in British magazines and journals from the period 1860 to 1900, revealed three major themes in the presentation of China to the late nineteenth century reading public. Two of these themes, the alien and incomprehensible nature of China and China' s refusal to modernize, have been discussed by other historians. While the books that they used as source material did reveal the negative aspects of these themes, the periodical press better demonstrates the relentlessly hostile presentation of information about China, the constant repetition of a narrow range of topics dealing with China and further, the subtle shift of writers' attitudes against China on an issue such as modernization. While the character of individual Chinese was not a major issue in the few books that historians of the period have examined, it emerged as a major theme in many articles published in the late nineteenth century. Finally, an examination of news reporting from China in the Times of London revealed the persistence of negative portrayals of China year after year. British hostility toward China was most clearly demonstrated through the course of regular Times coverage of events from China. The negative imagery remained consistent despite improving communications between Britain and China and despite the steadily increasing volume of information reaching Britain from China.

Abstract:
This thesis’ original contribution to knowledge is to indicate the unique contribution of qasbah‐based Urdu newspapers to the emergence of an Urdu public sphere in early 20th century South Asia, using as a primary lens the Urdu newspaper Madīnah. In doing so, this thesis will shed light on debates relating to Muslim religious identity, urban life, social status, and gender reform. Madīnah newspaper was published in Bijnor qasbah in Bijnor district, UP, from 1912 onwards. By the early 20th century, elite, literate qasbah dwellers increased their attachment to their ashrāf identity, even as the definition of that social status group was being transformed. The nature of ashrāf conceptions of the qasbah in the Urdu newspaper conversation sheds light onto the nature of the Urdu public sphere, complicating existing narrative explanations of UP Muslim identity transformations. In the 12 years that constitute the span of the study, international developments such as the Italo-‐Turkish War, the Balkan Wars, and World War I, with domestic transformations in municipal policies and the activism of some Hindu groups motivated Muslims to redefine their place in early 20th century society. At the same time, the early 20th century saw the rising prominence of the qasbah as a centre of spiritual and cultural life among ashrāf Muslims. World War I and the non-‐cooperation movement threatened the British Empire’s hold on South Asia. In the midst of these shifting sands stood the city of Bijnor, a backwoods qasbah in the district of the same name. Bijnor’s publication Madīnah provided a regional platform for scholars, laymen, and poets to discuss their place in the new order. As part of a network of literary publications exchanged between qasbahs in the first half of the twentieth century, Madīnah shaped and complicated gender boundaries, religious identity, social status, and political alliance, all in the service of the Muslim ummah, or community. This thesis places Madīnah in the context of the broader Urdu newspaper market and the incipient newspaper culture of qasbahs, which both reflected the broadened geographic horizon of the qasbatī ashrāf and placed a premium on the qasbah as a place set apart from the city. After laying this foundation, the thesis turns to the place of Islam in qasbah newspapers and Madīnah. Newspapers reflected a division among ashrāf regarding the centrality of Islam in elite culture, revealing an ideological division between the qasbah and major urban centres Delhi, Lucknow, and Calcutta. Madīnah and other newspapers sought to establish an indelible link between Islam and ashrāf identity, in contrast to some urban newspapers, which sought to lay the groundwork instead for a secular, nationalized Muslim identity. This thesis then turns to the expanding geographic horizons of Madīnah newspaper, both enabled by novel technology and neutralized as a threat by careful framing of international and trans-‐regional content. The subsequent chapter deals with Madīnah's Women’s Newspaper, which demonstrated a trend toward gender ventriloquism in reformist approaches to gender. Many articles penned ostensibly by women had male authors; Madīnah's articles expressed a complex set of reactions to intimate female experiences, including curiosity, fascination, and anxiety. Qasbah newspapers offer new avenues for insight into the tensions that characterized the Urdu public of the early 20th century. This thesis highlights the character of qasbatī ashrāf's engagement with the broader literary conversation via newspapers during a time of dramatic social transformation, in the process contributing to the form of the Urdu public sphere.

Abstract:
This study traces the history of the Western Mail from 1869 to 1914, and provides an explanation of the newspaper's survival and commercial success in Wales. Based on the records of Western Mail and Echo Limited at the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth, the thesis adopts economic, social and political perspectives. From an analysis of the financial records of the Western Mail and its parent companies, the research reconstructs the history of the Western Mail's management and ownership, within the context of the late nineteenth century newspaper industry. It details the competitive environment within which the Mail and its rivals were produced, and assesses the broader effect that changes within Welsh and British journalism had on the form and design of the paper, and on the style of its approach to its readership. Finally, the study examines the role of the Western Mail editors and journalists in the political communities of Wales in general and Cardiff in particular. Setting the activities of the Western Mail's editors and journalists, and the impact of the newspaper's opinions against the canvass of Welsh industrial and political life reveals the origins of the Western Mail's confident perception of its own role in an essentially hostile political environment. However, the key to the Mail's success in Wales lies not in politics but in newspaper economics, and the concluding assessment presents the reasons and motives for the eventual amalgamation of the Western Mail with its rival, the South Wales Daily News, in 1928. This early history of the Western Mail explains why a Conservative newspaper, rather than a title more sympathetic to the Welsh political tradition, eventually became Wales' major national daily newspaper, the self styled papur cenedlaethol Cymru.

Abstract:
A consistent theme throughout the Canadian historiography on the Korean War is that it is Canada's forgotten war. However, as evidenced by the newspaper editorials published during the first year and a half of the war, this was simply not the case. Editorialists were keen to disseminate their opinions about the war to the Canadian public. The purpose of this thesis is to provide a detailed examination of Canadian newspaper editorials pertaining to the Korean War between 1950 and 1951. This time period was the most active of the entire war, both on the battlefield, and with governments and organizations, where issues pertaining to the war were consistently discussed. Taking into account location, language, and political orientation, seven newspapers were selected to achieve a pan-Canadian understanding of the war: the Vancouver Province, Winnipeg Free Press, Toronto Star, The Globe and Mail, Montreal Gazette, Le Devoir, and Halifax Chronicle- Herald . This thesis focuses on three major themes highlighted in the seven newspapers' editorials: the role Canada played in the war, the apparent threat of Communism, and attitudes regarding the United Nations. The English-language editorials generally argued that Canada should playa meaningful role in the Korean War, while editorials in Le Devoir raised some concerns. Furthermore, English-language newspapers were critical of the federal government's response to the war, and Canada's unprepared military, which were portrayed as leaving Canada vulnerable to Communist influence and attack. The threat of Communism was undeniable, though editorialists were unsure of its larger implications. The role the Soviet Union was playing in Korea, managing Communist China, and the influence of Communism in the United Nations were frequently debated in the newspaper editorials. In contrast to the standard historical argument that Canada has consistently been a strong supporter of the United Nations, some editorialists questioned how effective the UN could be in the Korean War. Others, however, believed the UN showed great promise. Opinion also varied as to whether the UN could dispel concerns that it was simply a renamed League of Nations, and, if it could move past this epithet, how would this be achieved. Finally, it was discussed whether the UN could even bring a lasting peace to the Korean peninsula.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the reaction to Maynard H. Jackson’s election as the first black mayor of a major southern city, Atlanta, through selected articles of its major newspaper, The Atlanta Constitution, covering the period of Jackson’s announcement of his candidacy through the end of his first two years in office. This particular paper was chosen because it was the dominant day-time newspaper and because of its moderate viewpoints and its emphasis on political news. While The Atlanta Constitution was aware of race as a factor, it was able to be objective in its treatment of Jackson. For example, the articles did not elaborate on Jackson’s race, but rather his qualifications and platform which made him eligible to be mayor of Atlanta. One would expect more criticism, and more emphasis on the race issue, but there was very little of such in the newspaper’s reporting of events during the Jackson era.

Abstract:
This study reviews the changes in Taiwan's newspaper industry during its current period of transition. Contemporary newspaper development in Taiwan after the lifting of martial law in July 1987 is evaluated in relation to transformations in the newspaper marketplace, journalistic practices, labor relations, and freedom of expression. This study concludes that changes in Taiwan's newspaper business are closely related to changes in the country's political atmosphere. The lifting of the Ban of Newspaper brought freedoms for which journalists had fought for decades; however, journalistic quality has not improved at the same speed. Changes will continue in the journalism industry; whether it grows in a healthy way is a topic for future study.

Abstract:
The prominent division in early America between the established eastern populations and communities in the West is evident when viewed through the lens of eighteenth-century Philadelphia newspapers, which themselves employed an East-West paradigm to interpret four events: the Paxton Boys Incident, Regulator Rebellion, Shays's Rebellion, and Constitutional Convention. Through the choices of what words to use to describe these clashes, through oversights, omissions, and misrepresentations, and sometimes through more direct tactics, Philadelphia newspapermen revealed a persistent cultural bias against and rivalry with western communities. This study illustrates how pervasive this contrast between East and West was in the minds of easterners; how central a feature of early American culture they considered it to be.

Giombolini, Alecia Jay. "Anarchism on the Willamette: the Firebrand Newspaper and the Origins of a Culturally American Anarchist Movement, 1895-1898." PDXScholar, 2018. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/4471.

Full text
Abstract:
The Firebrand was an anarchist communist newspaper that was printed in Portland, Oregon from January 1895 to September 1897. The newspaper was a central catalyst behind the formation of the culturally American anarchist movement, a movement whose vital role in shaping radicalism in the United States during the Progressive Era has largely been ignored by historians. The central argument of this thesis is that the Firebrand publishers' experiences in Gilded Age Portland shaped the content and the format of the newspaper and led to the development of a new, uniquely American expression of anarchism. Anarchism was developed in response to the great transformations of the nineteenth century and the anxieties of a society that was being entirely restructured as industrialization and urbanization took hold across the globe. The anarchism of the Firebrand was a regional response to these same changes, an expression of radical discontent at the way in which life in Portland and the Pacific Northwest was rapidly changing. According to the Firebranders, the region had transformed from a place of economic opportunity and political freedom into a region driven by economic and political exploitation. Thus, the newspaper developed a uniquely western American perspective and expressed a formation of anarchist communism that was steeped in the history and culture of the United States. The newspaper was just as influenced by centuries of American libertarian activism as it was by outright anarchist philosophy. As a result, the newspaper frequently included articles about free love and women's rights, issues outside of the typical purview of anarchist communist political philosophy. This Americanized expression of anarchist communism allowed the newspaper to expand beyond the movement's core urban, immigrant audience and attract culturally American, English-speaking radicals to the cause. In the Fall of 1897, after two years and eight months in publication, three of the Firebrand publishers were arrested for the crime of sending obscene materials through the mail. The Firebrand's frank discussions of sexuality, women's rights, and free love offended the local censor and gave law enforcement an excuse to prosecute Portland's anarchists. The ensuing trial would result in the newspaper's closure. Nonetheless, a new intellectual movement had been established, and though the movement would remain small, it would play a disproportionately large role in shaping radical American politics and culture for the next two decades.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyses the content, tone, form and authorship of the national newspaper gossip column 1918-1939, as a new means through which the qualities of the popular press in this period can be more closely defined. Often dismissed as an example of the sensational, Americanization of early twentieth-century popular culture, the celebrity gossip column has been loosely grouped with the friendly, informal language and bolder formatting of the ‘New Journalism’ of the late nineteenth century and the development of the dramatic ‘human-interest’ stories of ‘everyday life’ in the interwar period (LeMahieu, 1988; Wiener, 1988). Through a comparative study of six newspapers including the Daily Express, Daily Mail and News of the World, I analyse the changing representation of the celebrity subject, and, originally, the shifting character and persona of the gossip columnist. Whereas some historians have analysed the content of newspapers without considering the questions of the newspaper’s production, I analyse newspaper employment records, gossip columnists’ memoirs and their unpublished letters and diaries to define the specific economic, social and cultural circumstances which, I argue, influenced their public portrayal. Also, in examining the unpublished correspondence between editors, proprietors and columnists and the burgeoning print culture of journalistic training manuals and professional memoirs, I provide a history of the press’s professionalization in this period. The national popular press has often been used as a historical source to define national character and national identity in the interwar period (Bland, 2008; Kohn, 1992). By scrutinizing the content and production of the gossip column and particularly the class, behaviour, interactions and subject matter of the columnist, I argue that the gossip column presented a version of ‘Britishness’ that was not so inward-looking and domesticated as so many accounts of interwar Britain suggest.

Abstract:
A content analysis was conducted to determine the amount and type of causal explanation included in coverage of the 1992 Los Angeles riots in The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times and The Christian Science Monitor. The data were analyzed to determine whether causal explanations were primarily societal or individual/situational. The primary purpose was to examine whether the press has altered its reporting techniques since the Kerner Commission report criticized the narrow, descriptive-based reporting of the 1960s riots. Study results indicate riot coverage was predominantly descriptive and similar in content to that detailed by the Kerner Commission. The most frequently cited cause was the triggering event, the Rodney King acquittal verdict.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to provide a close textual reading of representations of slavery in The Montreal Gazette, primarily within the period of 1785-1805, the first twenty years after the newspaper became bilingual. This project has three main outcomes. Firstly, it provides a history of black slavery in Montreal details the founding of The Gazette and evaluates its spatial layout, particularly the classified section where slave ads appear. Secondly, it analyzes the representation of black slaves in two distinct news forms: (1) ads of sale and (2) notices of escaped slaves, with particular focus on representations of race, gender, class, and criminality. Thirdly, it addresses the presentation of race and national identity in The Gazette, through both textual analysis and comparative analysis with the United States and Haiti. The project engages with conceptions of Canadian national identity throughout, particularly with respect to issues of tolerance and selective memory.

Abstract:
This research is premised on the understanding that alternative forms of media emerge to deal with specific ideological projects and, as such, must be seen as satisfying a specific need at a specific point in time. Using the case of a weekly newspaper, The Southern Star which was in circulation from January 2012 to June 2012, this study sought to understand the factors that led to the establishment of the newspaper, what it sought to achieve, how it went about putting that into practice, its message in relation to debates emanating from the ‘Matabeleland Question’ and also the factors that led to the its collapse. In order to address my research questions, I adopted a two stage research design qualitative content analysis and semi structured in depth interviews. In locating the study within the qualitative epistemic understanding of research, it was clear from the qualitative content analysis of 13 editions of the publication and in depth interviews held with 15 respondents that the newspaper was set up with the aim of serving a marginalised section of the population (in this instance the Ndebele) by providing them with a platform to articulate issues affecting them. It also sought to ‘speak’ the ‘unspoken’ within the mainstream media by focusing on Matabeleland identity politics. It achieved this by creating content around the Gukurahundi genocide, Matabeleland development, Matabeleland history and Matabeleland heroes. The newspaper also sought to emancipate the people from the South by advocated for social, cultural, economic and political justice as a resolution to the ‘Matabeleland Question’. However, the newspaper failed to sustain operations due to lack of advertising revenue. As a result of the constraining political environment in which the newspaper operated, potential advertisers were afraid of placing advertisements in the newspaper because of the nature of the content produced, which in view of Zimbabwe’s rival ethnic history, could easily be labelled ethnically divisive. Also, being a new player in the market worked to their disadvantage as prospective advertisers opted to place their adverts in “tried and tested” publications (Zimpapers and Alpha Media Holdings). Additionally, because of poor management, roles were not clearly defined and hence the newspaper failed to operate as a business enterprise. As noted during interviews with junior reporters, there was little or no experience at management level. The paper lacked a coordinated circulation strategy and from inception, was never officially launched, which resulted in the failure to reach significant audiences.

Abstract:
Both popular and scholarly observers have portrayed New Orleans as a city both supported and burdened by its image as a diverse cultural other within the American South, historically tolerant of certain sins of the flesh. This image has been used by proponents and critics alike in order to push their respective agenda regarding the Crescent City. This thesis will not seek to discredit this image that is based largely on fact. However, using Prohibition as a case study, this thesis will use letters to the editor to uncover attitudes of New Orleanians in opposition to this reputation to reveal alternative and historically silenced voices of New Orleans, since for instance people of a certain age, gender, or ethnicity were silenced in the halls of government. This paper will reveal the opinions of New Orleanians regarding Prohibition and what these opinions can tell us about New Orleans’s image.

This presentation explains the process that made people in general forget about the Caldeirão, a peasant community, created in 1926 at Cariri, south of Ceara, and the facts that destroyed it, through the relationships between memory and history. For that, O Povo, O Estado and O Nordeste, newspapers from Ceara, will be analyzed, from 1935 to 1981. These newspapers had the same opinion about pollitics, economy and social issues, so, they had a very similar speech about the war in Caldeirao, that helped it to be forgotten. This research also brings back the memory of Caldeirao, after the ostracism, through some initiatives. The documentary O Caldeirão da Santa Cruz do Deserto, from the movie maker Rosemberg Cariry, and the string poetry about the community and its leader, José Lourenço, will be analyzed

In the transition from the twentieth to the twenty-first century, with the advent of international policies for Inclusive Education, Brazilian Special Education outlines new directions for its history. In this period, significant changes in the conduct of educational policies for the targeted audience of Special Education students began to occur throughout the country. Given the organizational structure of Brazilian education, the role of states and municipalities were, and are extremely important for the effectiveness of national guidelines. Considering the context of substantial changes, this study aimed to analyze and retell the stories of Special Education in São Paulo [re] produced in the printed newspaper "O Estado de São Paulo", from 1997 to 2004. More specifically, the objective is to: identify and analyze the themes and characters related to special education, more frequent in the texts conveyed by the newspaper; analyze the design disseminated by the newspaper on Special Education and its target audience; and relate the content of the articles with educational policies for the target audience of Special Education. It was adopted as reference the conception of history and of historical production proposed by the Annales school, which breaks with the tradition of factual history, great heroes and ultimate truths, based on written records and especially on official documents. The documentary corpus consisted of texts published in the printed newspaper "O Estado de S. Paulo" in the period of 1997-2004, which were given at least a descriptor related to educational references in Special Education, previously established. Data were collected in the official site collection of the newspaper "O Estado de S. Paulo" through image capture, stored and organized in a digital database. About 5,844 articles were examined, from January 1997 to December 2004. The content analysis was made with the help of Atlas.ti software. The first analysis step was to filter the text with a focus on education. In the second, the texts were categorized based on the analysis axes: scope, condition, character, theme and relationship with educational policies. In the third one, the analysis was performed through the calculation of the frequency, absolute and cumulative, and content c-coefficient of co-occurrence of the analysis categories. Finally, in the fourth stage, stories of the Special Education in São Paulo were rescued, based on articles published in the newspaper "O Estado de S. Paulo". In all, 698 texts were selected for analysis. The results show that among the groups that comprise the target audience of Special Education, the condition of deficiency was the most discussed, with emphasis on the use of generic terms. The most frequently mentioned topics were school inclusion (n = 72) and philanthropy (n = 57), and the characters more often cited were special institutions (n = 168) and special school (n = 65). Several links between themes and characters were also found. By rescuing some stories we could identify an increase in the number of Special Education targeted students enrollment in regular education, successful experiences of school inclusion, the role of specialized institutions in school inclusion times, the need for restructuring of the educational system for the effectuation of the proposed inclusive education and how educational policies were translated in the field, as well as their relationship with the stories rescued.

Abstract:
Utilizing the theory of John Naisbitt's 1982 Megatrends, this study identifies eight trends for the future of higher education using content analysis of generalized print media reports for three bell-wether states. For the period of 2001-2005, generalized reporting for three newspapers, the Los Angeles Times from Los Angeles, CA, the Miami Herald from Miami, FL, and the Denver Post from Denver, CO, included over four thousand articles and covered 21 primary topics and over 200 secondary topics. Eight trends emerge from the content analysis. Trend 1, from the ivory tower to the public domain, identifies increasingly critical public scrutiny of higher education standards and curricula. Fight or flight, Trend 2, reveals more consistent no-tolerance policies for student behavior. Trend 3, scholar to celebrity, reveals an increasingly public role for university presidents. Academic freedom to academic flexibility, Trend 4, identifies a tightening of academic freedom policies for university staff and faculty. Trend 5, pay now, learn later, focuses on increased popularity of pre-paid and tax free plans for saving college tuition. Fraternity party to fraternity accountability, Trend 6, identifies increased scrutiny of Greek organizations and Greek life within the university environment. Trend 7, tenure to temporary, reflects the growing trend of hiring more part-time faculty rather than hiring faculty for tenure track positions or full-time instructor jobs. Lastly, campus to cyberspace, Trend 8, identifies the continued success of online instruction at the university level.

Abstract:
This research aims to analyze the children section of the Estado de Minas newspaper called Gurilândia during the period of 1948 to 1956. Gurilândia was created in a booming period for the children consumer market and was benefited by favorable conditions for its production and circulation by the Estado de Minas entrepreneurship group. Due to these facts, Gurilândia became very popular in the state of Minas Gerais, and it is until today printed. The decision to focus on the 1948-1956 years was based on the period in which Celso Brant, an influential person in the cultural and political scene in Minas Gerais during that time, was in charge of Gurilândia. From 01/25/1948 to 03/18/1956 Celso Brant implemented an innovative editorial project to that children supplement, and this research is direct to the 341 editions of Gurilândia under the Celso Brant management. The analyses of production, circulation and use of Gurilândia in this research are influenced by the dialogue with the fields of History of Books, Printing, Reading and Childhood. The main conclusion of this research is that under Celso Brant direction Gurilândia was developed under an editorial line determined by contemporary educational and pedagogic theories. Gurilândia was an important channel to the diffusion of educational material and it was always open to contributions by scholars and other educational institutions from Minas Gerais State. Many professionals linked to Revista do Ensino and Escola de Aperfeiçoamento, important institutions to the formation and education of many teachers during the first half of twentieth century in Minas Gerais State, made regular contributions to Gurilândia. An interesting aspect of Gurilândia is the production of special content not only to children, but also to teachers, under the influence of Escola Nova educational theories. During that time the editorial production aimed at the children market followed basically two movements: one towards the humor and games content, and other towards a more educative material. This research concludes that under Celso Brant direction Gurilândia can without doubts be included in the second group.

Abstract:
The influence of the media was a fundamental factor in the society s perception and awareness regarding the environmental crisis. As the media started to provide further information about environmental problems, it contributed to the interference and redirection of human relations and to the relations between society and environment. Communication, allied to other factors, was responsible for adding a strong social component in the process of environmental perception. In fact, without the means of communication coverage is almost certain that old problems had not been brought up into the area of public discourse and had not been part of the political process. Starting from these assertions, how has the environment been represented in printed media in Sergipe during the last three decades? What kind of coverage has the printed journalism given to the environmental question? It was from these concerns and from the assumption that the printed journalism role is fundamental to the formation of complex and critical thinking about the environmental question and its possible solutions like sustainable development, for instance that we intend to analyse in what level and how the Gazeta de Sergipe Newspaper (Sergipe Gazette Neswpaper) published articles with environmental themes from 1972 to 1992, trying to identify the space given to these subjects; their depth; the main themes considered; the environment conceptions published; the main information sources consulted; and, at last, elaborating a historical profile of the evolution of environmental themes conveyed. The object of study and the main source of research is the written press, precisely, the news content of articles with envrironmental themes spread by Gazeta de Sergipe. A content analysis and a hermeneutic and dialectic approach were used as methods of research. Gazeta de Sergipe brought to the society in Sergipe latent discussions that happened during the chosen period (1972-1992). As a traditional newspaper in this state (1948-2003), Gazeta de Sergipe kept itself within one of the most turbulent pages in Brazilian History. We can say, by means of a quantitative and qualitative analysis, that this newspaper realized the existence of a gradual demand for environmental themes and discussions about environment. The conduct of Gazeta de Sergipe was not unfavourable to environmental questions that made part of the social, economic and environmental important tripod that had supported the society in Sergipe, during the twenty researched years, however it gave an isolated coverage to the environmental themes. This posture adopted by the press contributed to a fragmented and partial understanding of the environmental question by the society.

Abstract:
Opinião (1972-1977) is one of the most important newspapers of the underground press. The weekly was born to do the opposition to the military regime through the union of many political tendencies, the so-called Broad Front. Even with strong censorship it came\'s a kind of progressive criticism characterized by deep political and aesthetic debate. The film discussion was made not only from de aesthetic point of view, but also as a political imperative against the military regime. We analyze the methodologies of film critics Jean-Claude Bernardet, Sérgio Augusto, Marcos Ribas de Farias, Gustavo Dahl, José Carlos Avellar and Clóvis Marques to observe how each one articulated in the texts the aesthetics and politics imperatives. At the reception of movies, some issues are always present: the role of the intellectual, the discussion about popular culture and the most appropriate language film to win the Brazilian public. The aim of this thesis is to assess how critics reconstruct and rebuild a political and aesthetic project for the Brazilian cinema in the seventies. In the internal disputes of the newspaper, we can also follow how the cultural resistance matters are present in the routine of film critics

Abstract:
At the end of the Second World War Italy, contrary to what happened after the first one, found itself in the ranks of the defeated countries and this implied the loss of the African colonies. The research develops from the need to understand how Italian public opinion was actually involved in the national and international debate regarding the future of the former Italian colonies and how Italy's return to Somalia with the international mandate entrusted to it by the UN was reported, while the19th century concept of colonialism was said to be outdated. An analysis of the newspapers such as La Stampa, Corriere della Sera, l'Unità and Avanti! will reveal whether there was a continuity with the colonial rhetoric of the liberal and then fascist period and whether there was a difference between the narrative made by the national newspapers and the party newspapers.

Abstract:
This thesis charts points of convergence between the fields of historical studies and film studies that generate a line of inquiry which questions how the development and dissemination of film and television have significantly shaped historical conscIOusness. Taking this line of inquiry as a starting point, this thesis identifies the ways in which film (and television) representations have informed American cultural memory of the Vietnam War. The thesis describes how the reporting of the war in newspapers and on television results in the production of a number of vivid and powerful 'nodal images'; these images enable their viewers to locate themselves in relation to the larger event and offer guidance regarding how other representations produced in response to the war might be understood. The thesis goes on to explore how these images play a significant. role in secondary film and television representations, including Hollywood feature films, whereby the initial connotations of the image are recirculated, reenacted and re-scripted. The thesis also indicates how other film representation of the war - such as the film records produced by the American military for tactical and strategic purposes and amateur film produced by American military personnel- are side-lined by the dominance of these nodal images. This study closes by proposing a taxonomy of the key features of these film (and television) representations and profiles the ways in which these features determi~e American cultural memory of the war and mediate historical experience more generally. The conclusion arrived at is that the historical consciousness engendered by these representations encourages the meaning of the Vietnam War to be located in relation to individual phenomenological experience and that the priVileging of this experience above all others marginalises the wider frames of reference - politics, history, economics and so on - which might make that experience meaningful.

Abstract:
The general objective of the research is to identify the graphic and editorial transformations of the newspaper Diário Popular de Pelotas between 1890 and 2016, tensioning how these relate to the local character of the journal and the contextual and technological changes that affect the publication. The methodological procedures are based on the model presented by Fonseca, Gomes and Campos (2016) for investigations into the history of design from printed materials. It covers the researcher's approach to the socio-historical context of the print from bibliographical and documentary research and graphic analysis of the journal itself. The cor-pus of analysis is composed of the newspaper's anniversary editions published at the begin-ning of each decade, as well as five other issues considered relevant in the pre-analysis survey, which resulted in a total of 18 editions, evaluated in their editorial aspects (covers, sections, columns and special pages, inserts and supplements) and graphic aspects (support, format, grid, newspaper name, typography and images). It can be observed that the construction of the editorial and graphic identity of the newspaper is associated with the principles of lo-cal/regional journalism, and turns to the scope in which it circulates – Pelotas and its sur-rounding cities. The editorial organization in special sections and columns, as well as the hierarchy of information that prioritizes the local news (with the largest section, supplements or with prominent spaces) lends visibility to these principles. Throughout the evaluated pe-riod, there is an editorial and graphic consistency, although the newspaper goes through ad-aptations related to technological and contextual changes. These changes are made explicit to readers as a strategy to renew the contract of reading between the paper and its public, especially in the newspaper's anniversary editions, where the publication tells and recounts its history, reaffirming its role in the community in which it circulates.

Patterson, Ryan John. ""So many applications of science" : novel technology in British Imperial culture during the Abyssinian and Ashanti Expeditions, 1868-1874." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/18911.

Abstract:
This thesis will examine the portrayal and reception of ‘novel’ technology as constructed spectacle in the military and popular coverage of the Abyssinian (1868) and Ashanti (1873-4) expeditions. It will be argued that new and ‘novel’ military technologies, such as the machine gun, Hale rocket, cartridge rifle, breach-loading cannon, telegraph, railway, and steam tractor, were made to serve symbolic roles in a technophile discourse that cast African expansion as part of a conquest of the natural world. There was a growing confidence in mid-Victorian Britain of the Empire’s dominant position in the world, focused particularly on technological development and embodied in exhibition culture. During the 1860s and ‘70s, this confidence was increasingly extended to the prospect of expansion into Africa, which involved a substantial development of the ‘idea’ of Africa in the British imagination. The public engagement with these two campaigns provides a window into this developing culture of imperial confidence in Britain, as well as the shifting and contested ideas of race, climate, and martial prowess. The expeditions also prompted significant changes to understandings of ‘small wars’, a concept incorporating several important pillars of Victorian culture. It will be demonstrated that discourses of technological superiority and scientific violence were generated in response to anxieties of the perceived dangers posed by the African interior. Accounts of the expeditions demonstrated a strong hope, desire to claim, and tendency to interpret that novel European technology could tame and subjugate the African climate, as well as African populations. This study contributes to debates over the popularity of imperialism in Victorian society. It ties the popularity of empire to the social history of technology, and argues that the Abyssinian and Ashanti expeditions enhanced perceptions of military capability and technological superiority in the Victorian imagination. The efficacy of European technology is not dismissed, but approached as a proximate cause of a shift in culture, termed ‘the technologisation of imperial rhetoric’.

This paper refers to a Master's thesis from the Education Post-Graduate Program in UEPG. The research presents a study that investigated education and slaves at the end of the Empire in Brazil, specifically in the Province of Paraná, by using as primary source the newspaper “December Nineteenth”, which had been published in Curitiba-PR. The aim of the study was to understand the relationship between political, economic and social interests, and the slaves’ education in Paraná, based on the newspaper publications in 1871, 1885 and 1888. Specifically, we sought to examine the Provincial historical moment in Paraná and highlight slavery and the press; to investigate the ways slavery had been approached in “December Nineteenth” and also analyze the presence of liberal ideas in its publications. We have delimited the years there had proclaimed the latest laws related to the end of slavery: the “Free Womb Law”, the “Sexagenarian Law” and the “Golden Law”. We have selected “December Nineteenth” because it was the first newspaper officially produced in Paraná, and because it had been part of Paraná Province’s history since their emancipation until the end of the Empire. This study has been grounded by Historical Materialism, and its analytical categories were: State, Labor and Education. The methodological procedures were: literature review; survey of primary sources in the Paraná Public Library, Paraná Museum and Digital Brazilian Hemeroteca; selection of publications which were related to the subject and analysis of the selected material. The text has been divided into three chapters: the first one approaches press situation in provincial Paraná and also the slavery in that context; next it addresses more directly the “December Nineteenth” and the presence of black slaves in its publications; finally, in the text, we discuss the presence of liberal ideas in the newspaper publications, as well as education at that time and how it was presented in the journal. We have concluded that the “December Nineteenth” collaborated for spreading the freedom idea, however its pages had been permeated by liberal ideals, which aimed at capitalism effectuation in Brazil, because we couldn’t find any concern about the black people situation, even slaves or free, much less about schooling them.
