Full textMedia company put almost all of their financials on online products and the printednewspaper is almost gone thanks to rationalized thinking (Svenska mediehus 2014/152015). In todays media climate there is more opportunities in online journalism andwhen it comes to design, you will find a lot of conditions that are both similar and differentfrom printed journalism. One of the similarities is the adaption to ads, ratherthan to readers and to journalism (6.3.1:5; 6.3.3:5).One of the differences is the layout and when it comes to print, your can lay the bodytext in two or many columns, but the standard online is to lay it in one. This creates, rather than a horizontal, a strictly vertical reading and a (potentially) infinite column.3Although the exceptions exist, focus in online journalism is on the one column andaspects as font, whitespace and image take part. This essay will focus though on afourth and as important aspect: type size.Since long there is a standard for printed newspaper, while online there is anotherset of approaches. Ads and old times low-resolution screens gave birth to a web designwhere design elements where perceived as small. More and more evidence showsthat body text will get larger. If you follow the model set by Information Architectsyou can easily calculate which font size to use online, if you want it to equal the experienceof reading a printed body text (Information Architects 2006). If you follow thismodel to get the digital text match the printed, the font size will naturally get bigger, among other things, because we read it from a bigger distance. If you apply theoriesof typography and readability from among others typographers as Hallberg (1992)and Hellmark (2005), and designers as Peetre (6.3.1), Häggström (6.3.2) and Sigfridsson(6.3.3), a depiction, if not wholly solid but still, will appear that will indicate anincrease in font size. With a quantitative study of all (125) Swedish newspapers on the Internet, a researchintroductory material takes shape, which gives an overview on the state of typesize in body text in newspapers on the Internet. To lead up to the research problem,When it comes to type size, line spacing and column width, how is the body text designed in Swedish newspapers on the Internet? What are the aspects, focusing on typesize, that facilitates readability?, the quantitative study is supported by interviewswith representatives from the industry and a web survey which gives circumstantial ofreading habits and reading experience among readers of newspapers. With this data, this essay strive to answer questions about how the type size appears today but also ifthere is a problem and how, on this particular aspect, web design should develop.Sweden is among the best in the world when it comes to readers of newspapersper capita (World press trends 2014). Right now web design in newspapers is at crossroads and an overview of the situation should be of great interest.

Full textThe international typographic style, also known as the Swiss style, was developed in Switzerland in the 1950s, emphasizing purity, readability and objectivity. Distinctive features of the style are asymmetrical layouts, the use of a grid, serif fonts and text alignment on the left edge. Style is also associated with the preference of photography over illustrations or drawings. This style became an "international" style in art, architecture and culture after the 1950s, and was used by artists from all over the world. The report reveals the main aspects of the Swiss style.

Full textA descriptive visual content analysis was conducted on research articles from 30 academic journals with highest impact factor equally distributed between Mathematics, Medicine and Education research, to examine whether a correlation could be established between academic discipline and graphic design conventions used. The survey included layout aspects (e.g. size of pages and margins, text columns, use of graphic elements, placement of tables, visuals and page numbers) and typographical appearance of title, sub-headings, body copy and abstract (e.g. character height, weight, alignment, typeface, use of colour and inter-line distance). The results show that the disciplines used different but also shared some common graphic design conventions. In Mathematics often a single-column layout was used, with a small typographic variation, using a single Transitional or Transitional/Didone typeface for the entire document, not using any colour and seldom using any graphical elements. Medicine showed greater variation, using colour, non-centered typography combing sans-serif and serif typefaces, graphical elements and frames emphasising the often used double-column grid system. Education research shared appearance common for both disciplines, leaning mostly towards Mathematics. This thesis is in its entirety written in Swedish and is typeset partially in accordance with the findings from this survey. Code book is included.

Full textFor the creation of restaurant menus there are studies that show which recommendations you should use to achieve a well-designed menu. The purpose of the study is to investigate whether pizzeria personnel and designers create digital pizza menus consciously from the design recommendations that exists. This study is a qualitative research work and we have used a survey as strategy. Data collection methods that have been used to answer the study questions are literature search, a visual content analysis, group interviews and semi-structured interviews. One result from the interviews showed that the pizzeria personnel thinks that their menu design does not match their brand. The pizzeria personnel and customers have different perceptions about what the brand stands for. The group interviews show that the digital menus live up to customers expectation and their experience of the low-price pizza. The conclusions show that there are common and distinctive graphical elements. Most low-price pizzerias do not have a well thought out branding, although the pizzeria personnel and designers do not have consciousness regarding the design principles and recommendations.

Full textIn this thesis I'm trying to examine the meaning potential of visual elements and layout in a Swedish newspaper front page and the same newspaper's website's start page, drawing on theories about multimodality and social semiotics developed mainly by Theo van Leeuwen and Gunther Kress. The study is focusing on Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet and the website aftonbladet.se and compares these three different days. In this thesis I also try to examine what the newspaper communicate about its identity through the different visual components. My conclusion is that visual elements and layout have a great importance regarding what a newspaper communicate about how the news articles should be read, but what can be said about a company's identity mostly depend on the genre the newspaper belongs to and how well the reader knows that particular genre.

Full textThis research focuses on the issue of how to best structure text on a Smartphone screen. The factors involved in this research are text size, white space, text and line lengths, serif and sans serif fonts, pictures in text and contrast. The methodology of our research is based on a normative Swedish able-bodied person, as well as on relevant literature, personal analyses, interviews with people in the trade, an online survey, and a test performed with a focus group. The results are that a text written for Smartphones is best structured with: several paragraph divisions made with blank lines, with pictures where the picture has an informational purpose, and text length based on category of subject. The picture should be placed above the body text. Longer texts should be set with a scroll-function. Contrast is of great importance on mobile phones as texts can be read properly even when set in negative. In addition, using serif or sans serif is of no importance. According to the results both serif and sans serif can be read without difficulties on a Smartphone. Text size should be slightly enlarged in relation to the default settings on the mobile device. Since word division is not supported on screen, short words are recommended when possible to prevent a highly uneven right end.
Allen, Patrick T., J. Bateman, and J. Delin. "A model of genre in document layout." 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/3196.
Full textWe present a framework for the describing the genres of illustrated documents, based on analysis at five levels: content structure, rhetorical structure, layout structure, navigation structure, and linguistic structure. We also include three sources of constraints under which a document might be produced and interpreted: canvas constraints, production constraints, and consumption constraints. Document genres are conceptualised as complex specifications composed of descriptions at each of the five levels that conform in characteristic ways to the three kinds of constraint. We propose that the eight parameters together form a 'space' of possible identities for documents, electronic or paper. The notion of 'genre space' captures the fact that it is possible for new genres to develop at different positions in the space, as well enabling relationships between document types, or even transformations between them, to be examined and described.

The research is sampling by the headline of Economic Daily News in 2007, it aimed at the title to fit in with sample standard, and then to sort out good news and bad news based on expected returns, the effect on newspaper layout design and eye movements to design the attention score form. It scored by the different elements, such as space、colors and position dimensions, and also use the variable of attention、industry、company scale to analyze Economic Daily News whether affect the difference abnormal returns with stock price. The results as follows:Investors will have higher attention to electronic stocks than other common stocks, to look at the attention, if the large news report space have high attention, the abnormal returns response also have significance and continuance with low attention of small news report space. To add company scale to investigate, we can see the samples of large company scale, investors will have higher attention than the small company scale, however, page layout it seems that will have significance to affect the attention of investors:higher attention of news event will significance than the lower attention of news event. Therefore, maybe we can inference:when investors read the news, it will bear on visual affect of layout by the editor, and have priority to read the page layout with attractive report rather than small page layout、non-attractive reports.

It has been recognized that typography and layout would affect how readers receive and comprehend the content of an article, and thus may change reading patterns in both behavioral and optical aspects. With the extensively increasing use of digital communication worldwide, preferred choices of digital content and its layout inevitably enter the focus of interest of research and industries. Different forms of design might have an effect on reading patterns and readers’ preferences for content and thereby affect the published message. Former studies on printed matter have already shown the influence of various layout factors on reading patterns. This study aims at exploring whether the participants’ reading speed and the course of the eye movement will be influenced by three basic typographic variables: font type, line spacing, and text orientation. The study was conducted in a controlled environment with 41 students of the College of Journalism and Communication, Chinese Culture University. Subjects were exposed to an experimental setting with eye-tracking apparatus and asked to read articles written in Chinese characters on a back-lit e-book within a fixed period of time. There were two groups of students reading 6 articles each, sorted according to the experimental goal of finding reactions to font type, line spacing, and text orientation. By applying the method of eye-tracking, it has been examined how different forms of layout and typography influence the reader’s perception and reading mode. (1) It could be confirmed that font type, line spacing, and text orientation do affect the eye-movements. It was found that during the same fixed reading time, the identical amount of content induced different reading patterns: clear typo was read quicker than calligraphy style, due to shorter pauses on words; and vertically arranged text was read quicker than horizontally arranged for the same reason. Text with 3.0 line spacing was read quicker than text without spacing. (2) Repeated gazes on words were more frequent in text with characters of rough typo than smooth one, and more often on horizontally organized than on vertical text; as well as on words with a spacing of 1.5 than on words without spacing. Horizontal text of 1.5 spacing was more often gazed at than vertical text without spacing, while eye jumps were more evenly distributed when reading horizontal text, and eye jumps were more evenly distributed in text of 1.5 spacing than in text without spacing. (3) Pauses were more evenly distributed on rough typo, clear typo, and mixtures of both than on calligraphy style, and in the aforementioned order. Gazes were more evenly distributed in vertical text than in horizontal, eye jumps were more frequent on horizontal text than on vertical. The experiment’s results on the use of typography and spacing demonstrate that during a fixed reading time, reading of the same content induces more eye movements on horizontally arranged text than on vertically arranged, but more research needs to be conducted for investigating the reasons.

Newspaper, one of five major media, influences the public’s ideology, code of conduct and values. Newspaper plays a pivotal role in our life. When did newspaper emerge in Taiwan and how is it compiled? The study focuses on the newspaper during Japanese colonial period. The progress of newspaper made could be known base on the journalism history and editing. In the wake of having all samples skim, observe, photocopy and photograph, the format and features of newspaper during Japanese colonial period are induced. This study indicates: all of printing facilities, technology, editing skills, operation principles were introduced from Japan. Newspaper was innovated continuingly due to the inheritance of Japanese skill and principles as well as the Western up-to-date editing notions and skills. That’s the reason why the diversity was shown on newspaper during Japanese colonial period. The format and feature of newspaper during Japanese colonial is as follow: a. Two parallel frameworks were placed in each newspaper. Each framework is a single page. The framework comes in 3 styles: single-line, double-line and tri-line. b. The arrangement of columns placed straight from top to bottom appeared in most of newspapers. However, the arrangement of columns placed from right to left was seen on few of them. c. Columns were divided by finely horizontal lines. The number of column and row is increasing by time. The number of rows is in direct proportion with the framework width; the number of words in each row is in inverse proportion with font size. The column height and font size of Chinese version were higher and larger than those of Japanese version. d. The column variation, which featured the newspaper editing, plays an important role in the history of Taiwan newspaper editing skills. The variation rules are as follow: Headlines exceeded the column height; and then were followed by contents. Rule variations were engendered from content editing. Finally, it came to the adjustment of column-height. A wealth of formats emerged from the column editing. e. Classified index, article titles and topics were replaced by large and small headlines in the structure and content of newspaper. f. Flags in each newspaper were shown in calligraphy and content shown in Ming-tin. Most of classified index appeared in Li-shu; few headlines and picture illustrations appeared in boldface. As for the content, font size was minimized from 3~3.5 mm to 2~2.2mm. g. Reminders came in 10 symbols:「●、○、◎、☉、▲、▼、△、▽、◆、◇」. The following 7 symbols :「●、○、◎、▲、△、、、。」were used in highlighting. Those mentioned above were utilized for the classification of newspaper content.

Currently, there is an increase in the use of algorithmic approaches in the field of Graphic Design. However, they still have little repercussion in the context of Editorial Design, especially in the generation of printed publications layouts. This dissertation presents a computational system that automatically generates different layout possibilities from the same input content. The system was developed using Adobe InDesign scripting. The system generates results based on a set of rules collected from recognized literature in the field of Typography and Editorial Design. Briefly, the system works as follows. Initially, the user defines the contents (text and/or images). Then, the user can set some properties of the composition. Finally, the system generates the publication. The generation process begins with an analysis of the input content to define aspects of macro and microtypography. Then the document's visual properties, such as margins, or paragraph and character styles, are set. In the end, the content is composed on the page and the result presented to the user. The result is an editable file (InDesign). This allows the user to make any changes they deem necessary for the composition. Also, after each generation, it is possible to save a file with the properties and rules of the result. This file can be used later to generate visually coherent publications, which is useful for example to create collections. Thus, this system is presented as a tool that can help the creative process of graphic designers, especially in the early and more exploratory phases of projects. In this dissertation, we also analyze the results generated by the system in terms of its macro and microtypography properties, as well as its diversity and coherence.
