Abstract:
This article explores how the political orientation of newspapers is reflected in their page layout. The authors compare the layouts of five German national quality newspapers exemplarily and exploratively in a combination of quantitative and qualitative analyses. Dimensions of comparison are typography, size, colouration, quantity and arrangement of elements. Results show systematic differences between the page layouts of left-wing and right-wing newspapers. These differences are reflected in the contrast of traditional and contemporary styles and also in the use of ideologically charged typography and colours. In addition, the size of headlines seems to be dependent on political extremity. Graphic design seems to work as an ideological symbol system with different layout styles quite consistently representing partisan positions. If media users could come to learn and recognize such visual patterns, layout could function as a visual frame for political messages.

Abstract:
The purpose of the article is to explore the differences in perceptions and approaches to typographic design among the various communities that make up Haredi society. In general, the shape of the letter will be affected by the division between religious and non-religious genres, as well as by the intra-Haredi social division between “Hasidim” and “Lithuanians”, the two dominant groups that make up the Haredi society, whose lifestyles differ in several areas. The proposed article is an additional tier to previous studies and investigates the Hebrew letter and its role in the world of journalism as conveying a message in the social-educationalideological context, even without referring to what is actually written. The study reveals and deciphers the power struggles and relations that exist in the ultra-Orthodox world through the images and through the mechanisms activated through them and their results, as part of the visual culture. The research methodology is based on the integrated use of general scientific methods: analytical, systematic, historical, and comparative. Conclusions. The daily and weekly Haredi press is considered as something that “under the circumstances” is needed and yet is a major player in the Haredi visual world. The Ashkenazi Haredi press is divided into defined sectors. The newspapers of the Hassidic communities preserve a long-standing typographic, advertising, intra-community tradition, based on the design style of Jewish newspapers from early twentieth-century Europe. The newspapers of the Lithuanian communities reflect the character of the public who read them, who are more modern in their lifestyle. Even though there is strict control over the content, these newspapers reflect modernism in their typographic layout and letter style selection. The newspapers in both groups undergo strict editing in both content and form, and their respective rabbinical councils work hard to adapt them to their respective readership. The choice of letter, colour, and composition are borrowed, among other things, from the world of clothing, which has many rules, and reflects what is happening within the community. The differences between the Hasidic and Lithuanian groups are evident in their attitude to the visual elements in the various types of printing and advertising. The Haredi public are proficient readers and are aware of the subtleties of the shape and size of the letter from an early age. Therefore, the letter serves both as content and form, and its use in the visual world is varied. In addition to being a tool for content, the letter will be used for an image, a Hebrew date, gematria and to create an atmosphere of sacred or secular, depending on the typographic choice.

Abstract:
The newspaper layout has a special place in the continuum of news production. It is located at the interface between conception and materiality - between newsroom and pre-press area. The discourses and prerogatives for which in can be responsible confer it an important strategic organizational potential. And yet, the newspaper layout remains a little-understood element in the sociology of media. This study, which finds itself at the intersection of interactionist sociology and actor-network theory, is dedicated to the layout and those who construct it and use it daily in the newspaper. We show that it is through their differentiated roles that two agents in particular make it possible for the layout to realize its full potential: editorial secretaries (SR) and typographers. We try first to understand why these three actors (the layout, SR and typographers) have remained invisible within the newspaper. It is therefore a question of rethinking their place and role – of renewing and widening the observation matrix. We can then observe how these three actors interact at the core of the news-production process. To do this, we develop three examples from fieldwork carried out in a regional daily newspaper. In fact, it is an attempt to understand the ways in which copy-editing journalists and typographers were more or less able (depending on the eras selected; and in a non-linear way) to seize control of the layout and create what was necessary – the newspaper – as closely as possible to their vision of how it should be done.

Abstract:
Abstract Taking up an analysis of the materiality of the American Mission Press (AMP) bilingual catalogs printed from 1884 to 1896 in Ottoman Beirut, in this article I identify these booklets as publications that circulated among broad networks of books, journals and newspapers during the period of the Arab nahda. By examining these catalogs in terms of the wider historical significance of their materiality, specifically their organization, layout, typography and illustrations, in this essay I show how these booklets promoted the AMP and its mission’s entangled messages in an increasingly competitive publishing industry. On the one hand, the catalogs highlighted the AMP’s ‘western’ qualifications and strove to engage local readers’ interests in ‘modern’ culture, science and technology. On the other hand, these works marketed the mission’s universalist evangelical views. Thus, in this study I show how such ephemeral publications, when studied for their dynamic content, make evident nineteenth-century Arabic print commerce at work and also illustrate early examples of nascent advertising practices.

Abstract:
This study investigated the components of the layout to be considered in order to increase readers' attention and what visual perception principle correlated with the book cover, which has the limitation of a small and limited paper. In previous studies, the top four books with high consistency between book content and cover layout were selected among the 15 coverings of the library, and an experimental survey was conducted on 100 college students majoring in design. As a result of conducting a correlation analysis between attention, layout components, and response results to the visual perception principle, Typography and Image of the cover of the document were the most influential. In particular, the visual perception principle showed that the proximity of typography and the continuity of images were highly correlated. Second, the cover of the library of steady sellers showed remarkably low attention. Based on the results of the study, it could be estimated that applying the visual perception principle to strategic designs that can enhance the attention of typography and images in book edition design would be effective, and suggestions for attempts to increase the attention of book cover through new cover designs such as steady sellers' redesign.

Abstract:
Visual compositions have been present in Western society since the beginning of civilization. They evolved due to technological advances and are nowadays more visual than ever with the use of images, colors, layout, and typography. The latter has gained the attention of theorists such as van Leeuwen (2006), Serafini and Clausen (2012) and Silva and Barbosa (2020). Its potential may be seen in picturebooks – a literary and multimodal material widely used in educational contexts (Serafini, 2014). Therefore, this research investigated the semiotic potential of typography in contemporary picturebooks in order to understand the possible meanings of its organization. Five picturebooks from the website Vooks were selected and three parts – the cover, pages of narration, and pages of mental and verbal processes – were analyzed. Then, their typography was described based on the categories proposed by van Leeuwen (2006) and Serafini and Clausen (2012). The results showed that typography has the potential of visually defining which participant is speaking as well as establishing relations with the meaning of the word. For example, the typography of “jumped” was organized as if the letters were jumping themselves. Thus, the emphasis on aspects such as weight, size, and framing may make readers aware that typography can express meanings that go beyond the verbal text.

Abstract:
This study is a multi-theoretical explication of selected 21st-century literary texts with a focus on determining how literary pieces with experimental typography can be analyzed which places emphasis on a literary primer that can be produced from the textual analysis, interpretation, and explication of the texts analyzed. This research study examines the significance of experimental typography in selected literary texts, specifically focusing on Tahereh Mafi’s Shatter Me Novel, Austin Kleon’s Newspaper Blackout, and shape poetry. The findings revealed that authors employ various types of experimental typography to convey additional layers of meaning in their works. The analysis of Tahereh Mafi's novel "Shatter Me" identifies the use of strikethrough, the management of space, and the unconventional use of mechanics as experimental typography techniques. In blackout poetry, the interaction between visual and textual elements through the use of semiotics plays a vital role in conveying the intended message. Shape poetry, on the other hand, integrates language, design, and visual representation to create a cohesive composition, offering a unique and visually engaging reading experience. Based on the findings, it is concluded that writers utilize multiple modalities manifested in experimental typography, embedding symbolism in literature. Readers must recognize these modalities and analyze their impact on literary elements to develop accurate interpretations. The study recommends further exploration of 21st-century literary analysis, emphasizing works incorporating experimental typography and innovative forms of literary expression. It suggests making a primer on experimental typography available to literature students to enhance their understanding of typography's expressive potential. Additionally, the study proposes exploring other modalities employed by modern writers and testing the primer's usability in schools to optimize its impact on students' learning experiences and curriculum enhancement. This research contributes to the understanding and appreciation of experimental typography in contemporary literature.

Some account is taken of the linguistic content of these pages, but the primary focus is on typographic resources such as font choice, salience, and layout. It is found that there is a strong association between the nature of the typographic choices and the disciplinary orientation. Specifically, the more marked semiotic resources are likely to be associated with theses which are oriented towards the “New Humanities”, that is, adopting a more subjective approach to research.

By not only ‘member checking’ previous findings with sub-editors but also including the layout designers’ input on their collaborative process, I re(de)fine my original set of production values. My data suggest that in this particular newsroom the layout designer’s voice can be heard louder than ever. Combining elements appropriately within a coherent page layout is a well-recognized and crucial aspect of sophisticated information presentation. The precise function and nature of layout has not, however, been sufficiently addressed within computational approaches; attention is often restricted to relatively local issues of typography and text-formatting, leaving broader issues of layout unaddressed. In this paper we focus on the selection and function of layout in pages that appropriately combine textual and graphical representation styles to yield coherent presentation designs. We demonstrate that layout offers a rich resource for achieving presentational coherence, alongside more traditional resources such as text-formatting and the text-internal marking of discourse connections. We also introduce an integrated approach to layout, text, and diagram generation. Our approach is developed on the basis of a preliminary empirical investigation of professionally produced layouts, followed by implementation within a prototype information system in the area of art history.

Abstract:
In 1941, the Nazi regime revoked the long-established convention of typesetting German texts in Fraktur styles.1 This study examines the significance of the messages conveyed by letterforms in Nazi propaganda and the extent to which the regime put into practice its professed typographic policies. Taking into account different audiences and channels, it focuses on books by the Ahnenerbe institute controlled by Heinrich Himmler, the women’s magazine NS-Frauen-Warte and the newspaper Völkischer Beobachter. Fraktur styles seem to have functioned as the main letterforms of the blood and soil ideology, but another strand of Nazi typography departed from Fraktur and probably translated the importance of the Oera Linda book and the Codex Aesinas in the image of a supposedly ‘Aryan’ past. Meanwhile, the Nazi propaganda incorporated forms and norms that it appropriated from modernist typography, a topic implicitly raised in the dispute between Max Bill and Jan Tschichold in 1946. Typography functioned as an instrument for exclusion, racial discrimination and gender stereotyping and to mark the boundaries of the ‘Aryan’ community, challenging the notion of print-language as intrinsically inclusive expressed in Benedict Anderson’s Imagined Communities.

Abstract:
Aim of the article. This article deals with the iconic typography of the Talmud page and focuses on the relationship between script and religious identity. It examines changes in design and typography in the modern editions of Steinsaltz, Artscroll, and Koren since the 1980s, and how they led to the removal of some of these editions from the yeshiva world, preventing yeshiva students from using them. Results. The Talmud is the central and most influential text in the world of Jewish law. Its study holds great spiritual significance, and many regard it as a means for self-expression and connection to the Torah’s oral tradition. During the second half of the 20th century, initiatives were taken to change the traditional layout of Judaic texts. The aim of these initiatives was to create a new “Israeli design” for Judaic texts while remaining loyal to the past. Designers sought to strike a balance between conservation and innovation in aspects such as book design, technological advances in the printing industry, accessibility regarding reading, studying, and prayer, and catering to broader target audiences. In most cases, new book formats were chosen, but at times, such changes generated strong opposition in certain Jewish sectors, resulting in those books being banned from study halls and synagogues. A case in point was Rabbi Steinsaltz’s project of redesigning the Talmud to make Talmud study more accessible for struggling learners. Rabbi Steinsaltz changed the format of the Talmud page to a more readable format, using new fonts, additional punctuation, and wider spacing between the lines. This change, however, was not accepted by the Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) and parts of the National- Religious public. Scientific novelty. Existing research deals separately with the issue of Zionist Hebrew typography and the issue of the ultra-Orthodox society. To the best of our knowledge, so far, no research has directly linked the two issues to examine the ultra-Orthodox approach to design in general and to Hebrew typography in particular. This study contributes to previous research on Hebrew typography, emphasising its role in conveying a social, educational, and ideological message, regardless of the written text’s content. Conclusions. Judaic texts that are used in the ultra-Orthodox world are visually different in design from those used in the secular and/ or National-Religious world. While the ultra-Orthodox staunchly preserve the traditional Judaic book format (albeit with minor changes), the secular world and parts of the National-Religious public welcome books that have a variety of fonts, colorful designs and pictures, decorations, and didactic explanations to aid the reader. The Talmud is a book with a distinct typography and contains a wealth of information. The layout of a Talmud page allowed for a variety of different texts to be combined in one book, making it easier to study. The fixed template, which is exactly the same in all tractates, generates a visual representation of the text so that a large amount of information can be remembered through an “eidetic memory” of images. Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz’s edition of the Talmud (Koren), which changed the traditional page layout to make the text more accessible, remained only partially faithful to the original but brought about a true revolution. For some audiences, this innovative edition represents a pinnacle of Hebrew literature, while for others, it is seen as a violation of the sacred literature and should be banned. There has always been a strong connection between the ultra-Orthodox world and Hebrew typography, and it is still present on a daily basis. The Hebrew letters are cornerstones in the design of the Holy Scriptures. However, the attitude of the ultra-Orthodox world toward modern Hebrew typography as reflected in this study, is one of ambivalence, some acceptance but mostly strong reservations.

Abstract:
Digitization of newspapers is of interest for many reasons including preservation of history, accessibility and search ability, etc. While digitization of documents such as scientific articles and magazines is prevalent in literature, one of the main challenges for digitization of newspaper lies in its complex layout (e.g. articles spanning multiple columns, text interrupted by images) analysis, which is necessary to preserve human read-order. This work provides a major breakthrough in the digitization of newspapers on three fronts: first, releasing a dataset of 3000 fully-annotated, real-world newspaper images from 21 different U.S. states representing an extensive variety of complex layouts for document layout analysis; second, proposing layout segmentation as a precursor to existing optical character recognition (OCR) engines, where multiple state-of-the-art image segmentation models and several post-processing methods are explored for document layout segmentation; third, providing a thorough and structured evaluation protocol for isolated layout segmentation and end-to-end OCR.

AbstractThe paper compares the typography of the first edition of Goethe’s collected writings 1787–1790 with the layout (‹mise en page›) of the manuscript copies from which the print was set. It tries to establish the textual authority of particular typographic devices for print dramas such as the indications of scenes, stage directions, and speech prefixes by tracing their relation to the manuscript setting copies and their development in subsequent volumes of the print edition, but especially for the tragedy Torquato Tasso. It turns out that print typography is sensitive to the manuscript record but shows substantial tendencies to introducing additional typographic hierarchy, thereby underlining outward form, i. e. external characteristics of classicist drama. Later editions published during Goethe’s lifetime seem to go much further in this direction. The consequences for the typographic setup in critical editions of Goethe’s dramas are discussed.

Abstract:
Decades ago, people hurried to read newspapers. He was ready to count to the last penny in order to buy an interesting edition. At that time, the format and size of the newspaper were different, external beauty was not paid much attention to, it was strict, standard, gray. There were long columns and sloppy lyrics. However, the public was interested in the abundance of news on the pages of the publication. It is not easy to please the modern reader. Television, radio, computers, various CD-MD-DVD players, satellite and cable TV channels attract audiences and make periodicals uncompetitive. However, editors of newspapers and magazines tend to compete and consider different ways to meet the needs of the reader. Undoubtedly, there is room for an attractive design of the publication. The designer and layout designer of a newspaper can be compared to an architect and a builder, and the main elements of the design of a newspaper can be compared to the bricks from which a building is being built, that is, a newspaper issue. Designers and layout designers solve a complex of problems related to the plan of this construction – with the composition of numbers and bands, with the placement of materials, etc. The composition of the pages depends on the composition of the entire issue of the newspaper, which in turn is determined by the content of the published materials and their nature. In almost every newspaper, a more or less stable composition is gradually taking shape, which means the design of the pages, the main sections and headings characteristic of this publication. The article discusses some methods of layout of newspapers and magazines.

Abstract:
DI's Way is present as a new media in the world of print media. Print media originating from Surabaya, and for Surabaya residents. It looks like a magazine but is published every day, has a cover layout that is not like a magazine or newspaper. The cover design, in this case, especially the layout, has an aesthetic to determine the mass media, especially print, whether the media will sell or not. However, this daily is claimed to have many fans, both in its initial form, namely a website, to becoming a daily printed in color. This study uses a qualitative method with a hermeneutic approach to explore the impression of what the cover layout design shows that is not like a magazine or newspaper to Surabaya. The hermeneutic method is carried out by interpreting the data seen in the DI's way cover design, layout theory, and also matters related to Surabaya. This data mining is done by looking at the cover layout design in terms of the use of grids, margins, and also text and image elements. The results that can be seen are as a DI's way daily like a newspaper or newsletter that has a template for each edition with a cover layout showing the impression that the main interest of this media is to be able to tell important news to the City of Surabaya, by always using a large size for the main news photo and also for the text element (headline) but the arrangement can still be followed as a comfortable reading flow. A large portion seems to want to show the impression of the characteristics of the City of Surabaya as a city of heroes which has a great and passionate fighting spirit. Meanwhile, supporting news is placed below it according to the order of its news value, showing the impression of the vision that the City of Surabaya has in building a city that is more advanced from all aspects. In addition, grid management displays the impression of being a local mass media that is regularly reported in its media according to the identity of a daily media that has a news order position like an inverted pyramid.

A study of design and color effects on newspaper credibility indicates that earlier notions that readers equate modern color and layout with lack of professionalism may be faulty. The present study finds that readers judge color and design charactistics less harshly than previously thought and that characteristics other than design considerations “color” readers' views of newspaper value.

Abstract:
Horror film posters are often an important medium in attracting the attention of potential audiences and depicting the essence of the film. The typography in the poster plays a crucial role in conveying the message and atmosphere of the film. In many horror movie posters, the typeface often has a spooky character to create a tense atmosphere. The size and layout of the text are also important factors. Some posters choose to expose the film title in large, bold letters to capture attention, while others choose a more substantive look with smaller text to create mystery. Color also plays an important role in horror movie poster typography. The dominance of dark colors, such as black, dark red, or purple, is generally used to create a frightening atmosphere. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with an approach to typographic principles, namely legibility, readibility, visibility and clarity. As a result of the research and analysis, it can be concluded that, on average, Indonesian horror film typography in 2022 uses decorative fonts to create an impression of mystery and is then modified with visual effects to add a visual impression of horror. Based on the theory of typographic principles, the average Indonesian horror film poster in 2022 will still pay attention to this theory and fulfill typographic rules.

Abstract:
Abstract Using the example of newspaper headlines, this paper develops a speech-act theoretic approach to aspects of meaning that can be communicated through the use of typographic means. After considering, more generally, the relationship between speech act theory and writing, analogies between prosody and typography are discussed and the claim is developed that typographic means, just as prosodic means, may function as illocutionary force indicating devices. Using Gallmann’s (1985) system of graphic means, newspaper headlines are defined, more specifically, as typographic objects indicating the (meta-textual) illocution type of an announcement of the text topic. Finally, the relationship between the grammatically determined illocution of a (sentential) headline and its typographically determined meta-textual illocution is modeled, on the basis of Searle’s (1982b) account of fictional speech acts, as an interplay of „vertical“ and „horizontal“ rules. The paper closes with a discussion of the more general question whether typographic acts are speech acts.

Abstract:
Based on the analysis of dynamic typography elements and character transformation methods in the adventure game <What Remains of Edith Finch>, this thesis aims to analyze the elements that recent walking simulator games try to increase expressiveness from various angles. <What Remains of Edith Finch> is a rare example in which the use of text in the game is used as a means of expression beyond a means of conveying a referential meaning or narrative. In this game, the character text functions as various dynamic typography and also serves as a mechanism to express the inner side of the character in detail. In addition, various text objects such as letters, books, newspaper articles, posters, etc. placed in the space of the game are used to expand the scope for players to interpret the work. In addition, the text is not only used as a visual expression tool, but the episodes of short stories with various expressive features such as double narrators, intertextuality, comics-style conversion, and ludo-narrative dissonance are combined in a collage form to enhance the aesthetic perfection.

Abstract:
A cross-sectional design has often been used to study the quality of health-related educational materials meant for lay adults (e.g., patients, the public). The present study addressed this research limitation. We documented the proportion of online physical activity promotion (PAP) material revised within a given time period and how quality was affected, if at all. PAP web articles (N = 139) meant for lay adults, written in English, and first sampled in July 2018, were resampled in July 2020. Mean publication year at timepoint 1 was 2016.82 (±1.24). At timepoint 2 it was 2018.78 (±1.39). At both timepoints, suitability for lay use was appraised using five dimensions of the suitability assessment of materials (SAM) protocol: i.e., content, literacy demand, graphics, layout and typography, and learning stimulation/motivation. There were 61 web articles (43.9%) with indicated revision and analyzed in the present study. Articles were distributed across four organizational subgroups: commercial (n = 21), government (n = 13), professional association (n = 10), and voluntary health agency (n = 17). In the aggregate sample, two SAM dimensions significantly improved: literacy demand (e.g., more active voice) and layout & typography (e.g., formatting). Often, organizational subgroups mirrored the aggregate sample. Although the overall suitability remained within the satisfactory range across the dimensions, a moderate-to-large number of articles remained unsatisfactory at timepoint 2 within several subdomains (e.g., reading grade level, summary section). This study’s findings further evidence PAP materials are somewhat suitable and the need to study suitability subdomains in addition to overall suitability.
