Abstract:
The study examines the newspaper company „Radikal“, which is founded in 1914 and declares bankruptcy in 1939 in the wake of WWII and the major transitions in Bulgaria during that time. The company’s final end comes in 1953. There are no studies in the journalistic literature that examine „Radikal“ in detail, so this study aims to fill this gap by tracing and evaluating the company’s activities. The study uses a chronological approach and content analysis and is based on archival sources that have not been previously used in the scientific literature, as well as on newspaper sources and other references from the journalistic and historic literature. The study concludes that „Radikal“ presents a good example of a successful party-associated newspaper publishingcompany, which is why it left a significant mark on the newspaper industry in the history of the Bulgarian Kingdom.

Abstract:
Many Russian, Soviet and foreign Russian-language publications since 1882 were called “Pravda”. Some of them (the newspaper, the printing house and the publishing house) had a similar name in Yiddish containing Hebraism – “Der Emes”. The main problem of the research is to identify interaction points of these organizations. The purpose of this study isto find out how these print media relate to each other. The author considers their history on the basis of archival documents and memoirs of employees of these institutions. The analysis of publishing production was carried out on materials of the bulletin of the Russian Book Chamber and collections of Jewish publications found in two main libraries of Russia. The author has identified several printing houses with the same name of different subordination, working with printed products in Yiddish and Russian. The author came to the conclusion that the newspaper editorial board, the Printing house and the Publishing house “Der Emes” were in close cooperation.

Abstract:
The serialized novel in the Pałuczanin newspaper from Żnin 1927–1939In the history of the Polish press of the interwar period, a provincial publishing center located in Żnin, in Pałuki region, played a major role. In the 1930s, Żnin was home to a dynamically developing press company, offering high-circulation titles of nationwide coverage Moje Powieści, Moja Przyjaciółka. The first step towards the creation of the future Publishing House of Alfred Ksycki was the establishment of the Pałuczanin newspaper in 1927, which formed the basis for subsequent publishing initiatives. The periodical, including a few supplements, was edited in accordance with the principle of “everything for everyone”, and signalled the upcoming era of mass press. One of the ways of acquiring new readers, was the printing of novels in episodes, which started already in the first issue of the newspaper with a mini rural novel by Stanisław Kluczek, a folk writer of sensational historical novels. The newspaper featured 30 other popular novels from authors associated with the region Wanda Brzeska, Jan Andrzej Kraśny, Alojzy Kuzio, Franciszek Ksawery Tuczyński, but also those known from 19th-century French newspapers Émile Richebourg, Jules de Gastyne. The article presents the characteristics of all the titles published through the newspaper.

Abstract:
The French - local daily newspaper in Indochina appeared with the development of commerce and the presence of colonial capitalists (industrialists, miners, intellectuals, civil servants and traders) in the mid-1880s. French daily newspapers not only reflected the change of localities, but also played a role in promoting development through a focus on defending political views, providing economic information. Le Courrier d'Haiphong is a case of a local daily newspaper that balances factors such as operational objectives, publishing conditions, and is a “witness” of Hai Phong's urbanization process and plays a role as “participant factor” accelerating the modernization of one of the trade-industrial centers in the North of Vietnam during the colonial period. Out of the local sphere, Le Courrier d'Haiphong existed as a forum of French capitalists in Tonkin. As one of the very few newspapers that had not been suspended during its lifetime, Le Courrier d'Haiphong newspaper provided a way to publish newspapers in the early stages of journalism in Vietnam. At the same time, it is also a valuable resource for research on economic history, urban history, or cultural exchange and acculturation activities in the late nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century.

Abstract:
Khalil Sarkis (1842–1915) was an eminent figure in late Ottoman Beirut and an important contributor to thenahḍa, the Arab literary-cultural “awakening” that began in the latter part of the 19th century. Less known to Western scholarship than Butrus al-Bustani, Faris al-Shidyaq, or Jurji Zaydan, he is not usually regarded as a pillar of that awakening. He may not have been, but he certainly was an indispensable brick in its edifice. Born in 1842, when the most exciting changes were still in the future, Sarkis spent all his life in the service of his country's cultural betterment. He is mostly remembered for his newspaper,Lisan al-Hal, which was launched in 1877 and for many decades was one of the most credible Arabic organs. More than a journalist, however, Sarkis was a pioneering printer, a prolific publisher, and the author of nine books. In the last quarter of the 19th century he built one of Beirut's largest printing businesses, which turned out several journals, hundreds of books, and numerous publications. In the 19th-century Middle East, being a printer often meant being a publisher; Khalil Sarkis was both on a grand scale.

Kangzhan Ribao (War of Resistance Daily) was the cornerstone of the CCP’s ideological propaganda among its troops in the Shanxi-Suiyuan Base Area, which the Party established in early 1940. In response to the Party’s call for publishing newspapers for and by all party members and the masses, this newspaper maintained a large network of reporters while relying on those at the grassroots as its authors and turning the illiterate and semi-literate populace into its faithful audience. All these made the newspaper a remarkable success in the history of Chinese journalism.

Kozak, Sergij. "«Ukrajinski visti» newspaper as a source for studying the features of functioning оf «Novi dni» journal (Саnada, 1950—1997)." Proceedings of Research and Scientific Institute for Periodicals, no. 10(28) (January 2020): 3–13. http://dx.doi.org/10.37222/2524-0331-2020-10(28)-1.

Abstract:
«Ukrajinski visti» and «Novi dni» are, respectively, a newspaper and magazine, two different publications. One came out in Germany and the United States, another ― in Canada. Each of them has its own history. However, they had a lot in common ― first and foremost, that their subscribers belonged to related organizations. Moreover, the Ivan Bagryanyi’s Foundation, which was the publisher of the newspaper «Ukrajinski visti» (Germany, 1945 ― USA, 2000) during the last stage of its history, also helped materially with the «Novi dni». So it is no coincidence that «Ukrajinski visti» paid a keen attention to the materials on the fate and content of the «Novi dni». The article aims to elucidate peculiarities of functioning of the «Novi dni» magazine (1950—1997s) via a prism of publications in the «Ukrajinski visti». In the course of this research, a considerable amount of publications has been studied, as well as valuable facts about the history of the magazine have been uncovered. The activities of the Publishing Union and the individuals who took care of its issuing, the names of the editors-in-chief of the journal were revealed. The article has elucidated the changes that occurred in the editorial board after a death of a founder of the newspaper, Petro Volyniak, as well as the most important factors in the life of the magazine in terms of emigration reality. It also outlined a role of the publication in shaping cultural and spiritual heritage of the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada and other countries spanning a significant period. The main method of research was to analyze publications of different genres found in the newspaper. According to the newspaper’s content, among the numerous periodicals of the Ukrainian emigration (diaspora) published in Toronto (Canada), the magazine’s role was especial. First of all, it is one of the oldest of all Ukrainian emigration magazines. «Nоvi Dni» has almost half a century of publishing. To flip through the pages of the «Ukrajinski Visti» stories about this journal is at the same time to trace the post-war sociopolitical, social and, above all, cultural life of Ukrainians. Keywords: magazine, «Ukrajinski visti», «Novi Dni», Canada, editorial board, Publishing Union, article, emigration.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study reviews the changes in Taiwan's newspaper industry during its current period of transition. Contemporary newspaper development in Taiwan after the lifting of martial law in July 1987 is evaluated in relation to transformations in the newspaper marketplace, journalistic practices, labor relations, and freedom of expression. This study concludes that changes in Taiwan's newspaper business are closely related to changes in the country's political atmosphere. The lifting of the Ban of Newspaper brought freedoms for which journalists had fought for decades; however, journalistic quality has not improved at the same speed. Changes will continue in the journalism industry; whether it grows in a healthy way is a topic for future study.

Newman, Sarah Louise. "The celebrity gossip column and newspaper journalism in Britain, 1918-1939." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2014. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:30cc8c66-d243-4134-b891-2eb84ce7de2b.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyses the content, tone, form and authorship of the national newspaper gossip column 1918-1939, as a new means through which the qualities of the popular press in this period can be more closely defined. Often dismissed as an example of the sensational, Americanization of early twentieth-century popular culture, the celebrity gossip column has been loosely grouped with the friendly, informal language and bolder formatting of the ‘New Journalism’ of the late nineteenth century and the development of the dramatic ‘human-interest’ stories of ‘everyday life’ in the interwar period (LeMahieu, 1988; Wiener, 1988). Through a comparative study of six newspapers including the Daily Express, Daily Mail and News of the World, I analyse the changing representation of the celebrity subject, and, originally, the shifting character and persona of the gossip columnist. Whereas some historians have analysed the content of newspapers without considering the questions of the newspaper’s production, I analyse newspaper employment records, gossip columnists’ memoirs and their unpublished letters and diaries to define the specific economic, social and cultural circumstances which, I argue, influenced their public portrayal. Also, in examining the unpublished correspondence between editors, proprietors and columnists and the burgeoning print culture of journalistic training manuals and professional memoirs, I provide a history of the press’s professionalization in this period. The national popular press has often been used as a historical source to define national character and national identity in the interwar period (Bland, 2008; Kohn, 1992). By scrutinizing the content and production of the gossip column and particularly the class, behaviour, interactions and subject matter of the columnist, I argue that the gossip column presented a version of ‘Britishness’ that was not so inward-looking and domesticated as so many accounts of interwar Britain suggest.

Moyo, Chelesani. "A critical history of the rise and fall of the first ever independently owned Matabeleland publication in Zimbabwe : the case of The Southern Star." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1013273.

Full text
Abstract:
This research is premised on the understanding that alternative forms of media emerge to deal with specific ideological projects and, as such, must be seen as satisfying a specific need at a specific point in time. Using the case of a weekly newspaper, The Southern Star which was in circulation from January 2012 to June 2012, this study sought to understand the factors that led to the establishment of the newspaper, what it sought to achieve, how it went about putting that into practice, its message in relation to debates emanating from the ‘Matabeleland Question’ and also the factors that led to the its collapse. In order to address my research questions, I adopted a two stage research design qualitative content analysis and semi structured in depth interviews. In locating the study within the qualitative epistemic understanding of research, it was clear from the qualitative content analysis of 13 editions of the publication and in depth interviews held with 15 respondents that the newspaper was set up with the aim of serving a marginalised section of the population (in this instance the Ndebele) by providing them with a platform to articulate issues affecting them. It also sought to ‘speak’ the ‘unspoken’ within the mainstream media by focusing on Matabeleland identity politics. It achieved this by creating content around the Gukurahundi genocide, Matabeleland development, Matabeleland history and Matabeleland heroes. The newspaper also sought to emancipate the people from the South by advocated for social, cultural, economic and political justice as a resolution to the ‘Matabeleland Question’. However, the newspaper failed to sustain operations due to lack of advertising revenue. As a result of the constraining political environment in which the newspaper operated, potential advertisers were afraid of placing advertisements in the newspaper because of the nature of the content produced, which in view of Zimbabwe’s rival ethnic history, could easily be labelled ethnically divisive. Also, being a new player in the market worked to their disadvantage as prospective advertisers opted to place their adverts in “tried and tested” publications (Zimpapers and Alpha Media Holdings). Additionally, because of poor management, roles were not clearly defined and hence the newspaper failed to operate as a business enterprise. As noted during interviews with junior reporters, there was little or no experience at management level. The paper lacked a coordinated circulation strategy and from inception, was never officially launched, which resulted in the failure to reach significant audiences.

Abstract:
The ways newspapers developed as products for readers was influenced by their costs and financing, forms of ownership and market competition. This chapter explores the economics of print and online news publishing in Britain and Ireland from 1900 to 2018 and examines the patterns of ownership, concentration and competition in the national, regional and local newspaper markets. The chapter explores the relationship between the financing of the press, market competition and ownership patterns showing how these have mutually influenced provision. The chapter integrates original analysis of primary and secondary sources and draws on the author’s research on media and advertising relationships to trace the significance of advertising subsidy for publications, up to contemporary challenges, including falling ad revenues for print, and business responses including advertiser sponsored content. The chapter also provides original table data setting out newspaper ownership and circulation for the period.

Abstract:
In June 1829, Joseph Smith and Martin Harris began contacting printers, including Thurlow Weed, who declined a contract, and Egbert B. Grandin, who eventually agreed to publish the Book of Mormon. Oliver Cowdery prepared a printer’s copy of the manuscript, and printing began in late August or early September. Employees of the print shop, including Pomeroy Tucker, Albert Chandler, and John H. Gilbert, later described the process in detail. During this same period, Cornelius Blatchly published an early newspaper article about the Book of Mormon, Abner Cole began illegally publishing extracts from the Book of Mormon, and a controversial revelation dealing with the Canadian copyright was dictated. In March 1830, the Wayne Sentinel announced the publication of the Book of Mormon.

Abstract:
Throughout the period in question, Gaelic periodical publishing has faced a number of persistent problems: relatively small, and declining, numbers of speakers, comparatively low levels of literacy in the language, insufficient institutional support, and editors and writers working for little material reward. As a result, most Gaelic periodicals survived for relatively short periods, and aside from the weekly Mac-Talla, published in Canada from 1892 to 1904, there has never been a Gaelic newspaper of any significance. In spite of this, Gaelic periodicals made a major contribution to Gaelic literature and culture more generally, serving as a platform for new generations of Gaelic writers, a conduit for new styles, particularly of modernist Gaelic poetry, and new genres, such as the short story, plays, social and political comment, current affairs, humour, literary translation, and much else.

Abstract:
The book’s epilogue surveys how the economic dislocations of the 1970s and 1980s resulted in substantial long-term changes for both America’s culture of consumer capitalism and for those who labored in New York to produce it. Inflation and unemployment hobbled the economy, heralding a new age of rising inequality. This crisis in mass purchasing power coincided with the fracturing of the mass market for consumer goods that advertisers and the media had conjured into existence since the turn of the twentieth century. In addition, urban decline, financialization, and an increased hostility to unions by employers and the government added to the difficulties and challenges that culture workers in New York’s television, newspaper, advertising, and book publishing sectors encountered during this transitional phase in the history of consumer capitalism and the history of white-collar labor.
