Abstract:
Science communication in online media is a discursive domain where science-related content is often expressed through styles characteristic of popular journalism. This article aims to characterize some dominant stylistic patterns in magazine articles devoted to environmental issues by identifying the devices used to enhance newsworthiness, given the fact that for some readers environmental topics may no longer seem engaging. The analytic perspective is an adaptation of the newsworthiness framework that has been applied in news discourse studies. The material is a sample of the 38 most-read environment-oriented articles in the online version of the international science magazine New Scientist collected between late 2013 and late 2014. The articles are analysed qualitatively to show the instantiations of such newsworthiness criteria as novelty and superlativeness, timeliness and impact, negativity and positivity as well as other strategies aimed at engaging the readers: rationalization and speculation, direct address and conversational style. The analysis reveals how, in this case study, science communication is turned into infotainment and considers the implications of this discursive shift for the public understanding of environmental science.

This article consists of a reflection on the citizenship regarding means of communication, more specifically television. It is based on the principle that the viewer’s participation in television news program content should be configured as a right and, therefore, a citizenship guarantee. The study shows how journalists can be involved in the practice of citizenship, basing on the newsworthiness criteria that shape these professionals’ routines in the production process of news that is conveyed in telejournalism. The object of this research is the news frame “Quero ver na TV” (“I want to see on TV”), created by Anhanguera Television, affiliated with Rede Globo, to be aninteractivity channel among viewers and journalists.

Abstract:
Social media have become one of the most important news delivery channels due to their interactivity and large audiences. The content published by news organizations on social networking sites is of particular value to sociologists, because it allows measurement of users’ attitude to certain events. However, we understand that the media choose which events become news in accordance with certain criteria, such as news values. In this study, we decided to examine how news values determine the public’s response as expressed by likes, reposts, and comments. To analyze the characteristics of different media and their audiences, we selected four popular newsgroups on the social networking site Vkontakte: TASS and Russia Today, representing the state media, alongside RBC and Meduza, representing the private media. The posts of the selected newsgroups were coded and analyzed by means of Harcup and O’Neill taxonomy of values (2016). The study showed that news organizations tend to have preferences for some news values rather than others. Regression analysis revealed positive relationships between 1) the sharing of likes and good and entertaining content, 2) the sharing of comments and the presence of celebrities or conflicts in news, 3) the sharing of reposts and comments and significant events. An unexpected discovery was a negative dependency between the number of comments and the presence of exclusive content.

Abstract:
This Frontline article documents and analyses the process of creating a piece of journalism about an Indigenous-run legal bid in the Solomon Islands to challenge potentially corrupt government logging approvals. It also documents the responses of 12 editors to whom the piece was presented to, including the reasons, in terms of standard newsworthiness criterion, that some of them gave for not running the article. This process illustrates how the criteria exclude coverage of some international issues. According to lawyers working on it, this case could set important legal precedents that change the way companies deal with both the government and traditional land owners in the Solomon Islands. Spreading its relevance to other places, the story, when told at length, differs from and therefore challenges stereotypical narratives about PacificIslanders. In doing so, it contributes to a process called ‘social bridging’ described by Ward (2010) as being an aim of ethical journalistic practice. The writing and publication process are analysed with reference to Foucault’s (1972) model of discourse and enunciative modalities.Pictured: Figure 1: ‘Cloud forest’: Mt Rano from the crater rim near Mt Veve on Kolombangara Island. Abstract:
Photojournalism contests have been criticized for continually awarding top prizes in hard news categories to images that depict conflict, disaster, poverty, and other problems. Pictures like these, which have a social issues visual frame, usually focus on people from countries other than the United States and on minorities. Some photojournalism contests, like Pictures of the Year International (POYi), include a features category. Traditionally, the purpose of feature photographs is to celebrate the human condition; however, in recent years of the POYi contest the features category has been dominated by images that stress hardship. To investigate whether this represents an increasing trend in POYi of awarding prizes to pictures that focus on social issues, a content analysis of the winning photographs from the past 20 years was conducted. Understanding whether the feature category in Pictures of the Year International has evolved is important because when it comes to shaping discourses about social issues, national identities, ethnicity, and race, feature photos have the potential for emphasizing commonality. If the newsworthiness of feature photos starts to become tied to similar criteria as hard news photos, that potential will be diminished.

Abstract:
While existing work explains how journalists use news values to select some stories over others, we know little about how stories that meet newsworthiness criteria are prioritized. Once stories are deemed newsworthy, how do journalists calculate their relative utility? Such an ordering of preferences is important as higher ranked stories receive more media attention. To better understand how stories are ordered once they are selected, we propose a model for rational journalistic preferences which describes how journalists rank stories by making cost-benefit analyses. When faced with competing newsworthy stories, such as in an election context, the model can generate expectations regarding news coverage patterns. To illustrate model utility, we draw on a unique case – the US 2016 presidential election – to explain how reporters order newsworthy stories (e.g. scandal and the horse race) by observing changes in the volume. Our content data captures coverage featuring Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump on major broadcast and cable networks over 31 weeks. We find that the rational journalistic preference model explains the imbalance of scandal coverage between the two candidates and the dominance of horse race coverage. In 2016, such preferences may have inadvertently contributed to a balance of news stories that favored Trump.

Abstract:
Palavras-chave: Critérios de noticiabilidade; Valor-notícia; Manifestações sociais; Dispositivos móveis; Jornalismo.ABSTRACT This paper aims to update newsworthiness criteria using as referential the social demonstrations that took place in several cities in Brazil in June 2013.
This thesis mainly aims at analyzing the construction of the journalistic event, in times of digital social media’s advance, based on studies about events, criteria for newsworthiness and convergence culture. For this to happen, I assume that the construction of the journalistic event has been reconfigured, from the advance of the use of digital social media by subjects, stressing the linear process of news production (sender – message – receiver). In order to reflect on this assumption, I chose the "Geisy Arruda-Uniban Event", which first circulated on YouTube, on blogs, on Twitter, and was later turned into journalistic event by portals and traditional media. I use a cartographic perspective to allow for mapping the flow of the journalistic event and its aftermath on G1, R7 and Terra portals, to identify the plateaus of this event and the external and internal issues that shape it as journalistic event. I build the map of "Geisy Arruda – Uniban Journalistic Event" from the 960 articles published on the three portals, since the publication of the videos on YouTube, on October 22nd, 2009, until the release of the biography "Dressed to Cause" on November 17th, 2010.

The present research seeks to analyze the changes that involve the newsworthiness criteria in the environment of online journalism from a now bigger participation of the public via social networking sites. To do so, it is used a comparative of parameters between journalists and the public. While taking as a measure of the journalist's values the headlines of the cover of the sites of the Correio do Povo and Folha de S. Paulo, is based on the most shared news by the public from the official profiles of the two communication vehicles on social network sites Facebook and Twitter. As a methodology, it is used interviews with site managers, observation and the creation of data collection mechanisms that allows the comparison through four variables: presence of editorials, position on the page, presence of news-values and presence of detailed news-values. It is verified that in the majority of the cases analyzed here there is consonance between the journalist and the public in relation to the criteria of importance, but it is attentive to the importance of the differences, also essential in the process, suggesting that the issue should not be summarized to one or the another.

Abstract:
Portuguese photojournalism has been through great changes during its course. Nowadays, with the Internet, paradigms related to photojournalism are being questioned, so it is necessary to analyze what governs this activity, and its values. Making photography for the press means several stages of selection: decisions vary from individual to individual. There are various ways to interpret and approach the same reality: photography is a construction of reality. Likewise, each newspaper has its own identity, which can lead to organizational constraints: a newspaper editorial policy may not be in accord with the ideals of its employees. Financial cuts and the cybernetic age have contributed to speed the process of journalistic photography, asking more work in less time to photojournalists. Furthermore, factors such as citizen’s photojournalism have been testing photojournalistic work. This present study aims to understand how photojournalists see their profession nowadays, given in consideration their actual scenery. Ten interviews were conducted with Portuguese photojournalists, from reporters to publishers, working in a publication (newspaper or magazine) or in an agency, or freelancers. Portuguese photojournalists speak about several constraints to their work, mostly regarding financial questions, which, in turn, accentuate the organizational constraints, the scarcity of human resources and of time.

Abstract:
The present report is the result of a case study originating from an experience of a curricular internship program for a period of six months in the television news network, SIC. Through an empirical study of the planning (agenda) and the programming of news reporting within the studied television station, it was intended to confer the news-values and criteria used during the process of news selection. Furthermore, the aim of this investigation is to understand if and how any form of agenda-setting is carried out during this news selection process at SIC. First of all, an introductory note about the institution, SIC, was made, just as a short reflection on the internship carried out, where we offer a personal testimony of the experience lived during six months internship in a television news network. Secondly, in order to achieve the goal of this investigation, the practical application of the theoretical components of the present case study was carried out through an empirical analysis of the data obtained during the week in study from the planning and scheduling of news reporting at SIC. A comparative analysis was carried out between the two segments (planning and programming of news), with the aim of determining the influence of the process of planning and programming in the selection of news stories in terms of newsworthiness and news criteria, just like any other aspects approached in the theoretical component of this report. In the course of this investigation, we were able to confirm reasons why television news covers certain information, the reasons why certain thematic categories have a greater prevalence in the coverage of news, as well as the appetence for covering what is already scheduled. The results of this investigation show a strong representation of what is in the agenda, that is, what was previously scheduled to report, in the programming of news reporting – namely, the agenda-setting in action. Through this research we were able to give evidence of the existence of imponderable criteria, involved during the process of selecting newsworthiness and the production of news.

From an experience of internship, this work intends to analyze the changes in journalism in the digital era and the path that it seems to go through. We are facing an era where the readers are less and less willing to spend money to obtain information when they can find it for free, both partial and complete, on the internet. The devices that allow the readers to access the contents are developing fast, which allows the public in general to have access to objects increasingly faster, more autonomous, and portable and with more accessible prices given the demand. Considering this new form to access the news, professionals try more and more to adapt their contents to the needs of the consumers – they present lighter and more superficial news in order to satisfy their public which is wider and with different tastes. Through the content’s democratization of the online media it was possible to approach the journalism to the general population and, mainly, to the public who wouldn’t search for the news in the first place. It is important to take in consideration that, in March of 2016, more than six million Portuguese people already carried a smartphone, a device with characteristics that allow anyone to access to various types of information anywhere. We are facing a time where the traditional “pull” system, where the readers search news contents, gives place to the “push” system where the companies search the readers. It wouldn’t, however, make sense to talk about this new behavior from the mass media without emphasizing the impact that the social network has had in Journalism and in the media. Facebook and Twitter, essentially, have become allies to the journalists when it’s time to search and diffuse the news in the internet, becoming essential the presence of the mass media on these platforms in order to approach them to the potential readers. The data reported here is worked around a reflection on the impacts of the changes at the news-values. It will, necessarily, implicate a brief historical contextualization, in order to understand the effects that the past has on the new ways to do journalism. This report emerges as a climax point of a three month internship at Jornal de Notícias’ online section. During that time I witnessed the routines that the online newspapers have every day and the pressures they face in order to satisfy the need to consume more and more quickly. This and other questions that appeared during that time will be issue on this report.

Abstract:
The aim of this project is to address the convergence of the various media within Jornal Record newsroom, focusing on the production of sports information for different platforms, trying to understand if the criteria of newsworthiness differ according to the online and the printed edition. The concepts of journalism, sports journalism, journalism in the digital age and journalistic convergence were addressed, which, combined with the analysis of the printed edition and the Record website, and a four-month curriculum internship in the newspaper, helped to sustain the conclusions reached. The news that made the cover in the printed newspaper the week of September 11 to 17, 2016, were subject to a content analysis. A grid was elaborated with several indicators that allowed to perceive the differences / similarities between the contents published in the printed and in the online edition. Also, an interview was held with Director Adjunto Bernardo Ribeiro, in order to better understand the functioning of the newspaper and its various platforms. This study concluded that while Record can be considered a success story in terms of convergence, the printed newspaper remains the dominant platform in the newspaper's editorial, despite the continued growth of the online platform.

Abstract:
Technological innovations and the explosion of gadgets and platforms such as social media and news aggregators, had a major impact on traditional media. In particular, the press was already struggling with a crisis that the Internet and free information model in online has strengthened. In this sense, economic and technological issues underlie the crisis that journalism lives in the present. Structurally, this crisis is reflected in an information more focused on soft news - as opposed to hard news, more serious news and with substance. In this context, this research aims to identify how the trends noted are reflected in news aggregators, in particular its newsworthiness criteria. Thus, we analyzed the MSN Portugal through the method of content analysis and as a complement to it, we used the interview method. We interviewed the editors responsible for news selection in the aggregator to better understand the news criteria and objectives of the same. The results indicate a strong trend toward soft news in an attempt to attract the greatest number of users and therefore the sustainable financial survival of the aggregator. In MSN, it is clear that rather than news value, we see an increasingly “audience value”. In other words, we perceive an orientation to offer what users want to consume. Thus, the aggregator contributes to further enhance these same trends already identified in traditional media.

Abstract:
Social networks have modified the activities of the press, the actions of audiences, and the perceptions of societies. The strategies displayed to avoid losing consumers aim at fulfilling the audience's needs and the gap between the producers' and the consumers' interests tends to widen. This leads to a crisis point in news financing, affecting the traditional logic of the media industry; while advertisers are now able to reach their audiences without its mediation, viralization and instantaneity force the media to publish information incompatible with the public interest as considered by the press. In this way, traditional newsworthiness criteria are replaced by other criteria that redefine the concept of information. The aim of this chapter is to analyze the way in which instantaneity and viralization have affected not only the journalistic activity but also the information selection criteria and the audiences' input on the web.
