Abstract:
In this paper, we precise the asymptotic behavior of Newton polygons of L-functions associated to character sums, coming from certain n variable Laurent polynomials. In order to do this, we use the free sum on convex polytopes. This operation allows the determination of the limit of generic Newton polygons for the sum Δ = Δ1⊕Δ2 when we know the limit of generic Newton polygons for each factor. To our knowledge, these are the first results concerning the asymptotic behavior of Newton polygons for multivariable polynomials when the generic Newton polygon differs from the combinatorial (Hodge) po

This chapter considers the role of visions and dreams in mathematics by focusing on Leopold Kronecker's desire—or dream—to find solutions to a large and interesting collection of polynomial equations. It begins with a discussion of three kinds of storytelling in mathematics: origin stories, purpose stories, and raisins in the pudding. It then examines Kronecker's so-called liebster Jugendtraum, the “beloved dream of (his) youth,” arguing that the seed of this dream lay in Carl Friedrich Gauss's expression for square roots of integers as trigonometric sums. It also describes three truths about explanation as opposed to proof, along with basic concepts in the epistemology of mathematics, such as the difference between explicit and implicit statements. Finally, it speculates on how Girolamo Cardano, Gauss, Isaac Newton, and Kronecker might solve cubic equations.

This chapter describes the anticipation surrounding the publication of Isaac Newton’s The Chronology of Ancient Kingdoms. The willingness of publisher Jacob Tonson to fork out a sizeable sum of money to secure the publication rights of the Chronology attests to the considerable public interest the book generated. On June 5, 1727, The poet Edward Young informed a friend that Londoners anticipated “with Impatience” the publication of Newton’s theological works; five months later, the Scottish divine Robert Wodrow learned from Colin Maclaurin that the Chronology was in print “and there are very great expectations from it.” More dramatic still was the visual representation of Newton’s chronology as it was engraved on some of John Senex’s more expensive globes.

This chapter applies the Backpropagation Neural Network (BPNN) trained with different numerical algorithms and technical analysis indicators as inputs to forecast daily US/Canada, US/Euro, US/Japan, US/Korea, US/Swiss, and US/UK exchange rate future price. The training algorithms are the Fletcher-Reeves, Polak-Ribiére, Powell-Beale, quasi-Newton (Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno, BFGS), and the Levenberg-Marquardt (LM). The standard Auto Regressive Moving Average (ARMA) process is adopted as a reference model for comparison. The performance of each BPNN and ARMA process is measured by computing the Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD), and Mean of Squared Errors (MSE). The simulation results reveal that the LM algorithm is the best performer and show strong evidence of the superiority of the BPNN over ARMA process. In sum, because of the simplicity and effectiveness of the approach, it could be implemented for real business application problems to predict US currency exchange rate future price.

Abstract:
This roundtable paper will demonstrate that the most central issue in questions of heritage involves changing perception of newborn human life. How does our definition of what comes before us change when the essence of what we are shifts with historical circumstances? In addition, this paper will demonstrate how professors can use research to “professionalize” undergraduates, a proposition that can seem easy in fields like nursing and yet becomes more difficult in English literature and can, at times, turn the broad and complex benefits of the study of literature into a “job training” to become efficient and literate office assistants. However, by engaging our undergraduates early and deeply in research, we professionalize them in a way that does not reduce it to job training. We broaden their horizons and connections, teach them to think deeply and imaginatively, and expose them to the potential of their curiosity. In sum, early exposure to research exponentially expands their abilities, endows them with confidence and allows them to imagine their lives and professions outside narrow frames of geography, age, or class that would limit their professional potential.

Abstract:
The concept of mathematical probability was established in 1933 by Andrey Nikolaevich Kolmogorov by defining a system of five axioms. This system can be enhanced to encompass the imaginary numbers set after the addition of three novel axioms. As a result, any random experiment can be executed in the complex probabilities set C which is the sum of the real probabilities set R and the imaginary probabilities set M. We aim here to incorporate supplementary imaginary dimensions to the random experiment occurring in the “real” laboratory in R and therefore to compute all the probabilities in the sets R, M, and C. Accordingly, the probability in the whole set C = R + M is constantly equivalent to one independently of the distribution of the input random variable in R, and subsequently the output of the stochastic experiment in R can be determined absolutely in C. This is the consequence of the fact that the probability in C is computed after the subtraction of the chaotic factor from the degree of our knowledge of the nondeterministic experiment. We will apply this innovative paradigm to Isaac Newton’s classical mechanics and to prove as well in an original way an important property at the foundation of statistical physics.

The principle of angular momentum implies that the time derivative of the angular momentum equals the sum of all torques, acting on the body. Concerning all types of education it is particularly important that theoretical basic principles are profoundly understood. This often enables to understand difficult mechanical systems by drawing parallels between complex mechanical systems and simple basic principles. One way to genera

Abstract:
Since compliant mechanism is usually required to perform in more than one environment, the ability to consider multiple objectives has to be included within the framework of topology optimization. And the topology optimization of micro-compliant mechanisms is actually a geometrically nonlinear problem. This paper deals with multiobjective topology optimization of micro-compliant mechanisms undergoing large deformation. The objective function is defined by the minimum compliance and maximum geometric advantage to design a mechanism which meets both stiffness and flexibility requirements. The we

Abstract Second-order components of wave loads acting on the floating foundation for wind turbines may induce severe resonance and lead to fatigue damage at natural frequencies of structures. In this study, the INNWIND.EU Triple-Spar and the DTU 10 MW Reference Wind Turbine were simulated by utilizing software FAST to obtain the second-order responses of the floating wind turbine under selected steady winds with collinear random waves. Low-frequency responses at surge and pitch natural frequencies dominated the response spectra, which were underestimated by the first-order numerical model. A r

Increasingly stringent regulations on NOx emissions are enforced by governments owing to their contribution in the formation of ozone, smog, fine aerosols, acid rains and nutrient pollution of surface water, which affect human health and environment. The design of high-efficiency, low-emission combustors achieving these ever-decreasing emission standards requires thermochemical mechanisms of sufficiently high accuracy. Recently, a comprehensive set of experimental data, collected through laser-based diagnostics in atmospheric, jet-wall, stagnation, premixed flames, was published for all isomer

Abstract:
One of the primary concerns in the operation of a compressor station is minimization of fuel consumption while maintaining the desired throughput of natural gas. In practice, the station operator tries to achieve this by shutting down units or controlling individual unit speeds based on experience. This is generally a trial-and-error process without any guarantee of optimality. In this paper we present a robust structured solution process for tackling this problem using simulation-based optimization. The first step to develop this solution process is to devise an analysis scheme that provides

Abstract:
The motions of floating moored structures are affected by first order wave loads which are proportional to the wave amplitude and associated with the wave frequency. On the other hand, second order wave loads are proportional to the square of the wave amplitude and related to the sum or difference of a pair of frequencies of the irregular sea. Although the second order loads are usually smaller compared to the first order loads, these loads can excite resonance motions in frequencies that the system has very low damping. Therefore, second order wave loads have particular importance in the desi
