Full textOur life is affected by our choices, once made we are bound by them. The materials that I use in my exhibition speak to my ideas about community and harmony. By placing familiar everyday objects such as discarded chairs and boat sails in an art installation, I am attempting to challenge social norms that shape one's destiny by exploring broader possibilities. The physical tensions in the work are created through tying, binding, pulling, stitching, and assembling to manifest the state of co-dependence and interconnectivities between the objects and materials. I approach my practice as a vehicle to express something about our human experience, and by transforming everyday materials and found objects into new forms and structures, I wish to connect art and ephemeral everyday experience and forge new meanings.

Sendo assim, é preciso continuar a progredir na descoberta de novas soluções que permitam superar estas questões. Para que isso seja possível, será aqui apresentado um estudo das redes de próxima geração em termos das opções para existentes para combater as limitações actuais tentando obter uma direcção para os próximos anos. Neste documento é apresentado um estudo das redes de acesso anteriores a NG-PON2, são procuradas em projectos actuais de grande envergadura e em publicações actuais de grupos de investigação de relevo tendências que contribuam para os vários requisitos de NG-PON2.
Nowadays, the common understanding is that the new access networks in optical fiber can provide unlimited capabilities; however, in reality, the practical aspects of the implementation, the architectural and network equipment performance options often lead to limited capacity values, although far superior to those currently available for copper networks. Therefore, we must continue to progress in finding new solutions to address these issues. To make this possible, a study of next-generation networks will be presented here, presenting the options available to tackle the existing constraints and to try to get a direction for the following years. In this document, a study of the access networks prior to NG-PON2 is presented, as well as trends in current projects in major publications and in relevant current research groups that contribute to the various requirements for NG-PON2.

Nowadays, there is the perception that new optical fiber access networks can provide unlimited capabilities, but the reality is different. The practicalities of implementation, the architectural options and performance of network equipment almost always lead to a limited capacity. However, optical fiber networks have much greater capacity than the existing copper networks. Therefore it is essential to continue the search for new solutions to address these issues. To make this possible, is presented here a study of next generation networks in terms of options to tackle the current constraints, and to obtain a direction for the upcoming years, where they fit coherent optical networks, which are seen as a strong possibility to fulfil NG-PON2 requirements.

Full textAlong with privacy and security, the growth of demand from the consumer for higher bandwidth presents one of the most important modern challenges in telecommunications infrastructures. The researchers were encouraged to nd not only e cient but also the economically viable solutions capable of meeting the growing needs of the consumer. Optical communications are the way that can accompany this growth. The Passive Optical Network (PON) is an architecture that shares the ber bandwidth among several users. There has been a constant study under this topic for the purpose of using all the ber abilities and to nd new solutions to keep the access network simple. Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) are a technology that emerged to help the complexity of the hardware that exists nowadays. It is a single chip capable of integrating numerous optical components, which leads to a reduced complexity, size and power consumption. These are the important characteristics that make the PICs a powerful tool to use in several applications. This dissertation presents a monolithic PIC transceiver in the context of Next Generation of Ethernet Passive Optical Network (NG-EPON) which aims to design and implement integrated optical circuits for future access networks. The transceiver architecture is able to be used as an Optical Network Unit (ONU) with a 4 channels approach for 100 Gb/s solutions. The present work contributed for the FUTPON project supported by P2020.
Em par com a privacidade e segurança, a crescente procura do consumidor por maiores larguras de banda apresenta um dos mais importantes desafios modernos das infraestruturas de telecomunicações. Esta procura incentiva assim a investigação de novas soluções não são eficientes, mas também economicamente viáveis, capazes de satisfazer as crescentes necessidades do consumidor. As comunicações óticas apresentam ser o meio apropriado para acompanhar este crescimento. A Rede Óptica Passiva (PON) e uma arquitectura usada para distribuição de fibra ótica ate ao consumidor final. Esta tecnologia permite dividir a largura de banda de uma única fibra por diferentes clientes. Tem havido um estudo constante no âmbito deste tópico para conseguir tirar máximo partido das capacidades da fibra e de modo a encontrar novas soluções para tornar este método mais simples. Os Circuitos Oticos Integrados (PIC) sao uma tecnologia que surge para ajudar na complexidade do hardware existente hoje em dia. Consiste num único chip capaz de integrar vários componentes óticos, o que leva a uma diminuição da complexidade, tamanho e redução do consumo de energia. Estas características fazem com que seja uma tecnologia vantajosa para uso em diferentes aplicações. O desenho e a implementação da arquitectura do transrecetor em formato PIC no contexto da Next Generation of Ethernet Passive Optical Network (NG-EPON), e o principal objectivo desta dissertação onde visa o desenvolvimento circuitos óticos integrados para redes oticas de acesso futuras. Esta arquitectura devera ser utilizada como Optical Network Unit (ONU) contendo 4 canais para atingir 100 Gb/s. Este trabalho contribuiu para o projecto FUTPON suportado pelo P2020.

Full textAs redes ópticas passivas (PONs) prometem satisfazer os requisitos dos utilizadores e provedores de serviços de forma a obter débitos mais elevados, quando comparados com as tecnologias baseadas em cobre. Com este trabalho pretende-se estudar e apresentar as tecnologias PON correntes actualmente, as suas características principais e alguma interpretação de como estas conseguem satisfazer os requisitos impostos. Vários standards para PON têm vindo a ser desenvolvidos ao longo dos anos e, considerando que a necessidade de melhores características de serviço é contínua, surgiram as redes ópticas passivas de próxima geração. As NG-PONs prometem satisfazer as exigências dos novos serviços, garantindo melhor qualidade de serviço global que os seus antecessores. Neste trabalho as recomendações do ITU-T e do IEEE são estudadas e apresentadas em detalhe e, como corolário, são comparadas por forma a identificar as suas diferenças e semelhanças. Com base nos conhecimentos obtidos, e com o intuito de validar por simulação alguns dos limites impostos pelas normas são feitas várias simulações de uma rede PON, seguindo a norma 10G-EPON. São variados parâmetros como distância da fibra, número máximo de utilizadores e perdas máximas por inserção de forma a poder avaliar o seu efeito e enquadrar com a norma obtida.
Passive Optical networks (PONs) promise to overcome the requirements of users and service providers to achieve higher data rates than conventional cooper Technologies. This work study and present the actual PON technologies, their main features and how they can successfully fulfill the imposed requirements. Several PON recommendations have appeared all over the years and due to ever increasing demand of improved services, PON networks evolved to Next Generation Passive Optical Networks. NG-PONs come to respond to the new quality and demanding services, ensuring better global performance than their antecessors. The ITU-T and IEEE recommendations are studied and presented in detail, and by corollary are compared in order to easily comprehend the differences and similarities between them. Based on the knowledge obtained and with the aim of validate by simulation some of the boundaries imposed by the recommendations, several simulations of a PON network are performed, following the 10G-EPON standard. Parameters like, fiber distance, number of users and maximum insertion loss are changed to evaluate their impact in the PON performance and to frame them in the recommendation.
