In this paper, the researcher discovered that prior to the contact between the Ngas society and the Western civilisation, the society like any other African societies had their institutionalised ways of inculcating its values to the younger ones. Through this medium, the younger boys were trained and taught the cherished cultural beliefs, goals, traditions and values of the society. However, this contact had negative consequences on the way these cultural values are passed down to the young Ngas boys because new methods of learning were introduced based on the Western model. The resistance to apoptosis of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) cells partly results from the deregulated production of survival signals from leukemic cells. Despite the development of new therapies in CLL, drug resistance and disease relapse still occur. Recently, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), a secreted glycoprotein, has been suggested to have a critical role in the biology of tumors. Thus, we investigated the relevance of NGAL in CLL pathogenesis, analyzed the expression of its cellular receptor (NGAL-R) on malignant B cells and tested whether CLL cells are resistant

The diversity of Brebes Regency has been attributed through scattered heritage tracks both tangible and intangible. All of them frame the identity of the community in Brebes Regency. Among them are the Jalawastu community which is on the slopes of the Kumbang mountain. Jalawastu is a trace of Sundanese in Brebes Regency which still survives. They still maintain some traditions as one of the strengthening of identity as heirs of Sundanese culture. It feels synonymous with the appreciation of the Jalawastu community for their natural cosmology that lives at the foot of Mount Kumbang. In Ngasa's

This study combines quantitative and qualitative data and explores the key factors affecting radio frequency identification (RFID ) adoption decision making in hospitals in Taiwan. RFID is not merely information technology; instead, it is closely related to behavior and organization culture (Ngai, Cheng, Au, & Lai, 2007). Three dimensions, i.e., technology, organization and environment, are discussed in this study to identify key factors of RFID adoption. For researchers, this study can serve as a reference for future studies regarding RFID adoption in hospitals; for practitioners, this st

Abstract Background Tubulointerstitial fibrosis is a powerful predictor of future progression inimmunoglobulin A (IgA) nephropathy (IgAN). Proximal tubular epithelial cells (PTECs), in concert with infiltrating macrophages, are regarded as the agents provocateurs for driving this fibrotic process. However, evidence is now emerging for a contributory role of the distal nephron. The aim of this study was to examine the potential influence of macrophages on collecting duct epithelial cells (CDECs) and their combined role in the progression of IgAN. This study evaluated the potential utility of albuminuria as a “biomarker” of acute kidney injury (AKI) and tested whether AKI induces renal expression of the normally silent albumin gene. Urine albumin concentrations were measured in mice with five different AKI models (maleate, ischemia-reperfusion, rhabdomyolysis, endotoxemia, ureteral obstruction). Albumin gene induction in renal cortex, and in antimycin A-injured cultured proximal tubular cells, was assessed (mRNA levels; RNA polymerase II binding to the albumin gene). Albumin's clinical performance as an AKI biomarker was also tested (29

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is one of the most common inherited diseases and is characterized by the development of fluid-filled cysts along multiple segments of the nephron. Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most common form of PKD, which is caused by mutations in either PKD1 or PKD2 genes that encode polycystin-1 (PC1) and polycystin-2 (PC2), respectively. As ADPKD progresses, cysts enlarge and disrupt normal kidney architecture, eventually leading to kidney failure. Our previous study showed that overexpression of exogenous kidney-specific neutrophil gelatinase

Abstract One of the main ways in which the British Empire rewarded philanthropy among British and imperial subjects was the honours system, an elaborate, hierarchical collection of awards and orders of chivalry. In its symbolism and rhetoric this system supplied a trans-imperial, color-blind judgment of both service and rank. This article uses discourses about honours to examine the formal and informal ways in which class, culture and race factored into public and private judgments about the relative worthiness of different kinds of philanthropy. In practice, British officials and elites were
