Lo, Jade, and Nina Eliasoph. Broadening Cultural Sociology's Scope: Meaning-Making in Mundane Organizational Life. Edited by Jeffrey C. Alexander, Ronald N. Jacobs, and Philip Smith. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780195377767.013.29.

Abstract:
This article proposes a more serious engagement between the fields of cultural sociology and organizational sociology by studying how culture shapes daily organizational life and how, in turn, everyday activity can build up to large-scale cultural change. It argues that people’s everyday methods of coordinating action in organizations, no matter how mundane, are meaningful. To support its arguments, the article examines transformations of words’ meanings in everyday language use by looking at three examples, one from a study of changes in the publishing industry and the other two from a larger study of youth civic engagement projects in the United States. It also discusses the concept of typification, structuralism in practice, border disputes within organizations, and Jeffrey C. Alexander’s notion of “performance” within organizations. Finally, it considers the use of cultural sociology to see how people in organizations coordinate action.

Stover, Angela M. Integrating Patient-Reported Outcomes into Routine Cancer Care Delivery. Edited by David A. Chambers, Wynne E. Norton, and Cynthia A. Vinson. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190647421.003.0021.

Abstract:
This case study describes a cancer hospital’s experience with implementing symptom questionnaires into routine care delivery. Implementing symptom questionnaires (patient-reported outcome measures [PROs]) into cancer care delivery is a useful case study for implementation science because there is ample evidence for effectiveness in improving care but stalled implementation throughout most US health care systems. No “turnkey” PRO implementation strategies exist; thus, each clinic or health care system has to make many complex implementation decisions on its own. The Organizational Model of Innovation Implementation and the Theoretical Domains Framework are used to illustrate the implementation planning process and barriers and facilitators encountered.

Boken, Vijendra K., Arthur P. Cracknell, and Ronald L. Heathcote. Monitoring and Predicting Agricultural Drought. Oxford University Press, 2005. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195162349.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Agricultural droughts affect whole societies, leading to higher food costs, threatened economies, and even famine. In order to mitigate such effects, researchers must first be able to monitor them, and then predict them; however no book currently focuses on accurate monitoring or prediction of these devastating kinds of droughts. To fill this void, the editors of Monitoring and Predicting Agricultural Drought have assembled a team of expert contributors from all continents to make a global study, describing biometeorological models and monitoring methods for agricultural droughts. These models and methods note the relationships between precipitation, soil moisture, and crop yields, using data gathered from conventional and remote sensing techniques. The coverage of the book includes probabilistic models and techniques used in America, Europe and the former USSR, Africa, Asia, and Australia, and it concludes with coverage of climate change and resultant shifts in agricultural productivity, drought early warning systems, and famine mitigation. This will be an essential collection for those who must advise governments or international organizations on the current scope, likelihood, and impact of agricultural droughts. Denis, Philippe. Case Study: Memory Work with Children Affected by HIV/AIDS in South Africa. Edited by Donald A. Ritchie. Oxford University Press, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780195339550.013.0011.

Full text
Abstract:
This article focuses on working with children affected by HIV/AIDS in South Arica. In the early years of the AIDS epidemic, relief organizations focused their efforts on the material needs of children, but their psychological and emotional needs are no less important. Recognizing this, the Sinomlando Centre for Oral History and Memory Work in Africa, a research and community development center located at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, in Pietermaritzburg South Africa, has pioneered a model of psychosocial intervention for children in grief—particularly but not exclusively in the context of HIV/AIDS. This model uses the methodology of oral history in a novel manner, combined with other techniques such as life story work and narrative therapy. During the early years of the project, the model followed for the family visits was the oral history interview. A discussion on caregiver as the narrator and skills required in memory work especially in these cases concludes this article.

Délano Alonso, Alexandra. Introduction. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190688578.003.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter provides a conceptual framework to understand the role of origin countries in offering programs focused on social assistance for their migrant populations in other countries. It examines the literature on diaspora policies and immigrant integration, identifying some of the gaps as well as opportunities to put these concepts and policies in conversation considering migrants’ access to social rights. It proposes that a transnational approach to issues of integration offers new ways to understand the processes through which it takes place—particularly considering precarious status migrants—as well as the various actors that participate, including origin-country governments, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), civil society on both sides of the border, and government institutions in the destination country. This chapter also discusses a transnational methodology for the study of diaspora institutions, specifically consulates.

Gunz, Hugh, Sally Gunz, and Ronit Dinovitzer. Professional Ethics. Edited by Laura Empson, Daniel Muzio, Joseph Broschak, and Bob Hinings. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199682393.013.23.

Abstract:
This chapter introduces professional ethics as a specific example of applied or practical ethics. The authors provide a short review of the literature on theoretical and applied ethics in order to give context for the subsequent discussion. They examine three foundational concepts of professional ethics: codes adopted by professional bodies, professional autonomy, and the contested role of gatekeeper. Next, the authors consider ethical pressures experienced by professionals in the non-professional organization (NPO), and then the Professional Service Firm (PSF). Here the authors compare the pressure exerted by employer and clients and examine how so-called “client capture” can become a complex phenomenon when both client and professional are corporate entities. Finally, the chapter considers the challenges for the study of ethics in the PSF highlighted by this account.
