Abstract:
The Google Books Ngram Viewer is a data mining tool that searches datasets derived from Google Books to generate frequency charts of language usage from the dawn of print until the present time. The available languages are English, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, and Russian. With a database in excess of two trillion words, it is the largest corpus of linguistics information in existence. In spite of concerns about the reliability of metadata used in Ngram Viewer, it is still viewed as a valuable resource for research into long-term cultural trends.

Abstract:
The objective of this paper is to verify if Google Books Ngram Viewer, a new tool working on a database of 361 billion words in English, and enabling quick recovery of data on word frequency in a diachronic perspective, is indeed valuable to socio-cultural research as suggested by its creators (Michel et al. 2010), i.e. the Cultural Observatory, Harvard University, Encyclopaedia Britannica, the American Heritage Dictionary, and Google. In the paper we introduce a study performed by Greenfield (2013), who applies the program to her Ecological Analysis, and contrast the findings with a study based on similar premises, in which we follow the trends in changes in word frequency throughout the 19th and 20th centuries to observe if these changes correspond to one of the major socio-cultural transformations that took place in the studied period, i.e. mediatization. The results of this study open a discussion on the usefulness of the program in socio-cultural research.

Abstract:
ObjectivesCulturomics is the study of behaviour and culture through quantitative analysis of digitised text. We aimed to apply a modern technique in this field to examine trends related to the history of psychiatry. In doing so, we aimed to explore the nature of the Google Ngram methodology.MethodsUsing Google Ngram Viewer, we studied Google’s corpus of over 4% of all published books and explored relevant trends in word usage.ResultsAn exponential growth in the use of ‘psychiatry’ between 1890 and 1984 was identified. ‘Sigmund Freud’ was mentioned more frequently than all other prominent figures in the history of psychiatry combined. Mentions of ‘suicide’ increased since 1820. The impact of several DSM editions is discussed.ConclusionThis study demonstrated the potential application of the Ngram methodology to the study of the history of psychiatry. The role of textual analysis in this field merits careful, constructive consideration and is likely to expand with technological advances.

The article discusses the evolution of key concepts referring to governmentality in comparative perspective. The Russian discourse on government and power is compared with the Western discourse. The Google Books Ngram Viewer databank covering the period from 1800 to 2019 is used as a source of information. This databank contains more than 5 % of all published books. The proposed discourse analysis suggests that the Russian and Western discourses have some elective affinity: in both cases there is little room for truth telling and whistle-blowers face significant risk.

Abstract:
Computer communication is revolutionizing modern society to the same extend as the invention of writing or the printing press have unsettled the archaic or the ancient society, respectively. In the present article, this idea will be exemplified by a demonstration of how the Google Ngram viewer – an online graphing tool which charts annual counts of words or sentences as found in the largest available corpus of digitalized books – allows for checks and challenges of familiar self-definitions of modern society. As functional differentiation is considered the central unique feature of modern societies, the hypotheses focus on the testing of prominent modern trend statements and predictions, such as the secularization, politicization, economization, and mediatization of society. All hypotheses are tested through a comparative analysis of word frequency time-series plots produced by means of the Google Ngram Viewer. The results show that the importance of individual function systems to society features significant change in time and considerable regional differences. Furthermore, the findings suggest adopting a skeptical position on some of the most frequent common senses of trends in functional differentiation and corresponding self-definitions of society.

Google Ngram Viewer reports that usage of the word interrogation has been climbing steadily since 1942. liberals will of course argue, not without force, that the George W. Bush administration's embrace of “enhanced interrogation” (i.e., torture) drove the recent steady rise. To that sound point one might, however, also advance a less palatable observation: that representatives of the academy were in the interrogation room, doing the interrogating, long before the Bush administration got into the act.

Abstract:
Google Books Ngram Viewer (GNV) is an analytical tool that uses quantitative methods to analyze digitized text. This paper looks at the possibilities and limitations of using GNV in management fashion research, an area of management research that examines the lifecycle and evolution of management concepts and ideas. GNV provides a historical big picture of the lifecycle and popularity of specific terms and phrases in books. It is argued that this tool could have a natural application in the study of management fashions, since books are a medium through which popular management concepts and ideas have traditionally been diffused. The paper provides several illustrative examples of how GNV can be applied to study management fashions and identifies the tool’s main possibilities and limitations. Although GNV has obvious advantages such as accessibility and user-friendliness, researchers should exercise caution, as it only provides a partial picture of the impact of management fashions.

Abstract:
Over the last few decades, an integral part of public finance development is budget (fiscal) transparency and accountability. It is also in the focus of scientific interest and international organizations’ activity. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of valuable empirical research on identifying key triggers and inhibitors of budget (fiscal) transparency and its cohesion with other concepts in public finance management. Thus, this research deals with the realization of several tasks: 1) identification of budget (fiscal) transparency genesis and its essence in modern terms; 2) clarification of its cohesion with other concepts in public finance management using modern tools of bibliometric analysis; 3) characteristics of a current state of budget transparency in Ukraine, identification problems and prospects in this sphere. The second task fulfillment is based on Google Ngram Viewer, Google Trends, and VOSviewer bibliometric tools. Implementation of Google Ngram Viewer is aimed at popularity quantification of the concepts “budget transparency”, “fiscal transparency” and “budget accountability” in English Google books for 1960-2012. It defines budget (fiscal) transparency and accountability became the focus of scientific interest starting from 1960th, demonstrating an increase from the 1990th, and peaked in 2005. Google Trends analysis also showed that the peak of Internet users’ interest in budget (fiscal) transparency issues was in 2005-2006. Moreover, Google Trends analysis and frequency of Scopus articles published on the budget (fiscal) transparency issues lead to the conclusion that this concept remains popular among both scientists and regular Internet users worldwide. VOSviewer analysis of 419 Scopus articles reveals that budget (fiscal) transparency closely connected with economic prosperity and sustainability at national and local levels, poverty elimination, environmental responsibility, democratic values implementation, fight against corruption, good governance, and especially the efficiency of public finance management, fiscal policy, and government expenditures. Finally, analysis of budget transparency level in Ukraine based on Open Budget Survey 2019 allows concluding that despite the general improvement of the country score (from 54 to 63 points) in comparison with the previous Survey period, Ukraine still has problems with Mid-Year Review and Pre-Budget Statement. Keywords: Bibliometric Analysis, Budget Accountability, Budget Transparency, Google Ngram, Google Trends, Fiscal Transparency, VOSviewer.

Abstract:
Diachronic morphology and gender equality This paper is part of the study of gender discrimination, in particular focused on some morphological dissymmetries. The study, based on the use of printed and electronic dictionaries, aims to demonstrate how Italian, a language that has a powerful morphological resource, sometimes especially for the denominations of certain occupations – engineer, architect, lawyer and judge – encounters rule blocks certainly not due to grammar, but dependent on a male-oriented worldview (not infrequently rooted and introjected by women themselves) and by the extralinguistic context that impedes normal application. For the purposes of this study, for a survey that takes into account the change in the frequency of use of the names of the professions under analysis in a fairly wide time span- from 1800 to 2019- Ngram Viewer, a Google program, was used to analyze corpora of texts of many languages, including Italian.

Context: In the last decades, one has the impression that the term sustainable development has evolved towards social responsibility and that the activities carried out by organizations and institutions are very similar. Nevertheless, this paper presents a theoretical discussion of the contribution of social responsibility. The question of this research is: through indicators of general interest and scientific production, it is possible to determine the evolution of sustainable development towards social responsibility? Methodology: Using the non-participatory method of secondary data analysis, secondary data from articles in the Redalyc, WorldCat, Microsoft Academic, Scopus, and Web of Science databases and specialized books on the topics were analyzed. Google Ngram Viewer and Google Trends were used to compare the variations of the indicators of scientific production and interest. Results: Through secondary data analysis, it was possible to establish indicators of general interest and scientific production. A discussion is presented on the evolution of sustainable development towards social responsibility. Conclusions: The results showed that the evolution of sustainable development towards social responsibility was not surpassed over time, except at some moments and in specific geographical locations. Abstract:
The concept of populism has generated endless controversy marked by both the contrasting political feelings it conveys and a particular problem of definition. This article—based on political speeches, academic literature, and relevant online sources, such as Google Ngram Viewer, catalogs of great libraries, and digital archives of newspapers—adopts a pragmatic approach to the concept throughout its history, from the moment when the noun appeared in North American political life in the late nineteenth century until the most recent “populist moment” in response to the economic crisis that started in 2008. The study of its changing meanings shows, however, some elements of continuity that make sense of what Margaret Canovan defined as “a notoriously vague term.”

ON THE AMBIGUITY OF THE TERM BIBLIOGRAPHY YET AGAIN — ON THE TERM “BIBLIOGRAPHY STUDIES” FOR THE FIRST TIME Referring to the term “bibliography” and its ambiguity, the author proposes the introduction of a new term, “bibliografoznawstwo” into the Polish terminological system. The proposal is preceded by a description of a similar situation from the 1970s in the Soviet Union, where eventually the Russian term библиографоведение and its equivalents — бібліографознавство in Ukrainian, and бібліяграфазнаўства in Belarusian were fully accepted. Finally, the author challenges the theses concerning the existence of equivalents of the term in other languages on the basis of a lexicographic analysis and data from Google Books Ngram Viewer. In conclusion he argues extensively in favour of the introduction of the new term “bibliografoznawstwo” as well as possible benefits of such a decision.

An integral component of successful entrepreneurial activity is the establishment of strong relations with partners, the form and type of which varies depending on the sphere of activity and its scope. Considering that a prerequisite for a business partnership is constant communication, the style, and quality of which mainly determines the success of doing business, the development of business communication skills becomes an object of continuous research by both scientists and enterprise managers. The main goal of this study was to examine the role and the importance of business partnerships in Google Trends. Another goal of the study was to look at how often the term business partnership appears in Google books, with the help of Google Books Ngram Viewer, as well as in a database of Science Direct, with the help of Science Direct’s search function. The top year of the interest frequency of business partnership was 2004 in the Google Trends worldwide in business and industry categories. The bottom year of interest frequency was 2006. The geographic analysis revealed that most people searched in Botswana, in Jamaica, in Zimbabwe, in Ghana, and Uganda for the term business partnership. Interestingly, these countries are all located on the African continent, except Jamaica. Most people searched in Accra, in Nairobi, in Manila, in Quezon City, and Cebu for the term business partnership. The results of the bibliometric analysis of the relationship of business partnerships with other categories made it possible to conclude that people (mostly from the Philippines, Ethiopia, the USA, Canada, and Kenya) inquired about the joint venture and limited partnership. The conducted study revealed that from 1950 to 1970, the frequency of appearance of business partnership in the Google Books` database has been decreasing continuously. From 1972 the frequency has been growing gradually, then from 2006, the frequency has been decreasing gradually. The use of the term “business partnership” shows in the Science Direct a second-degree polynomial growing trend. Summarizing all these results, we can conclude that while people in developing countries in Africa and Jamaica were most sought for expressing business partnerships, people in developed countries were more interested in types of business partnerships. Abstract:
While not quite a neologism at this point, the term “digital humanities” for some still bears a significant measure of ambiguity. What separates digital humanities from the humanities? Throughout this article, I will attempt to offer some clarity on this separation, outlining what it is that makes digital humanities, digital. The field of scholarship now recognised as the digital humanities has not always held this particular mantle. Initially, this emerging discipline was referred to as “humanities computing”, a term that gathered momentum as early as the late ‘70s, the evidence for which can be found in a quick n-gram of Google Books. N-grams offer an approach to probabilistic language modelling that can be used for a variety of purposes, in this case, to identify the frequency of a sequence of words in a set of texts. Google Ngram Viewer is not a scholarly tool appropriate for research, but it is ...

Abstract:

Context: The term sustainable development has remained in the interest of experts, governments and government institutions, but a discussion of its translations into Spanish is presented. The objective of this work was to clarify the debate on the term sustainable development in Spanish by analysing its use over time, geographically and by discipline. Method: Through the non-participatory methods of secondary data, databases and computer tools were analysed articles from scientific journals, specialized books and databases were reviewed such as Web of Science, Scopus, Taylor & Francis, Scielo, Redalyc, among others. Computer tools such as Google Trends and Google Ngram Viewer were used to analyse the variation of indicators of evolution of search interest and scientific production. Results: Through the combination of non-participatory methods, indicators of general interest and scientific production were determined. Conclusions: The results revealed that both terms are used indistinctly, preference is observed in the use of the term term desarrollo sostenido over the term desarrollo sustentable, both over time and in the economic and environmental disciplines.

Abstract:
(digital) history can give us about the past pandemics and dealing with them. We show that the Google Ngram Viewer (GNV) can discover hidden patterns in history (of pandemics). Our study is searching for evidence that the COVID-19 is not a unique phenomenon in human history. By using the approach of Digital Humanities, we are testing the hypothesis that the flu-like illness that caused loss of taste and smell in the late 19th century (Russian flu) was caused by a coronavirus. This approach could give hints on how the COVID-19 might develop in the following years. The objective was to calculate the ratio of increasing to decreasing trends in the changes in frequencies of the selected words representing symptoms of the Russian flu and COVID-19. The primary methodological concept of our approach is to analyse the ratio of increasing to decreasing trends in the changes in frequencies of the selected words representing symptoms of the Russian flu and COVID-19 with the Google NGram analytical tool. Initially, keywords were chosen that are specific and common for the Russian flu and COVID-19. We show the graphic display on the Y-axis what percentage of words in the selected corpus of books (collective memory) over the years (X-axis) make up the word. To standardise the data, we requested the data from 1800 to 2019 in English, German and Russian (to 2012) book corpora and focused on the ten years before, during and after the outbreak of the Russian flu. We compared this frequency index with “non-epidemic periods” to test the model’s analytical potential and prove the significance of the results. The limitation of this study is that it is difficult to formulate a hypothesis for a microbiological aetiology of a pandemic that occurred 133 years ago based on symptoms. There are indications that COVID-19 is not unique because the Russian flu (1889-1891) might be a coronavirus infection. The most crucial observation of similarities between the Russian flu pandemic and COVID-19 is the loss of smell and taste (anosmia and ageusia). Results show that all the three analysed book corpora (including newspapers and magazines) show the increase in the mention of the symptoms “loss of smell” and “loss of taste” during the Russian flu (1889-1891), which are today undoubtedly proven to be key symptoms of COVID-19. The mention of symptoms and the pandemic-related words fell sharply after the pandemic stopped. According to our analysis of historical records with the approach of GNV, 1) the ‘natural’ length of a pandemic is two to five years; 2) the pandemic stops on its own; 3) the viruses weaken over time; 4) the so-called “herd immunity” is not necessary to stop the pandemic; 5) Our approach has shown that a significant crisis does not need to occur after the COVID-19 pandemic. According to our study, GNV clearly shows the influence that social changes have on word frequency. The results of this study open a discussion on the usefulness of the Google Ngram insights possibilities into past socio-cultural development, i.e. epidemics and pandemics that can serve as lessons for today. However, this method has severe limitations and can be useful only under cautious handling and testing. Despite the numerous indications, we are aware that this thesis still cannot be confirmed and that it requires further historical and medical research. Abstract:
Background & Objectives: Nutritional culturomics (NCs) is a specific focus area of culturomics epistemology developing digital humanities and computational linguistics approaches to search for macro-patterns of public interest in food, nutrition and diet choice as a major component of cultural evolution. Cultural evolution is considered as a driver at the interface of environmental and food science, economy and policy. Methods: The paper presents an epistemic programme that builds on the use of big data from webbased services such as Google Trends, Google Adwords or Google Books Ngram Viewer. Results: A comparison of clearly defined NCs in terms of geography, culture, linguistics, literacy, technological setups or time period might be used to reveal variations and singularities in public’s behavior in terms of adaptation and mitigation policies in the agri-food and public health sectors. Conclusion: The proposed NC programme is developed along major axes: (1) the definition of an NC; (2) the reconstruction of food and diet histories; (3) the nutrition related epidemiology; (4) the understanding of variability of NCs; (5) the methodological diversification of NCs; (6) the quantifiable limitations and flaws of NCs. A series of indicative examples are presented regarding these NC epistemology components.

Abstract:
The prediction that reduction of negative selection decreases group-level competitiveness, as reflected in increased individual-focused and diminished group-focused moral foundations, is tested. To measure this hypothesized shift in moral foundations, we conduct a culturomic analysis of the utilization frequencies of items sourced from the moral foundations item pool, tracked among Britannic populations from 1800 to 1999 using Google Ngram Viewer. The resultant higher-order factor, which tracks increasing individualizing values and decreasing binding values, is termed Asabiyyah (capturing social cohesion and collective purpose). Two predictors of this factor are examined: change in the strength of intergroup competition and change in levels of indicators of developmental instability. Both the strength of intergroup competition and levels of developmental instability associate with Asabiyyah. Rising developmental instability mediates the impact of inter-group competition, indicating that reduced between-group competition might have relaxed negative selection against mutations, which might reduce Asabiyyah via their effects on inter-genomic transactions. These results must be interpreted carefully, given the clear real-world evidence that explicit commitment to group-oriented values often features in harmful and maladaptive social and political ideologies of an extreme character.

Abstract:
The irreversible impact of the societal challenges and/or changes on individual and social behavior requires new ways of teaching, learning, and assessment. These methods involve metacognition and successful learning strategies in tandem with a teacher strategy and the students’ tactics. The difference between cognition (involves the cognitive mechanism of the mental activities and processes set based on predetermined goals) and metacognition (the control of the goal achievement) points to the research problem stabilized for the article: the study of the metacognition management and successful learning strategies in pre-university education. The research methodology is focused on analysis metasystemic delimitations with Google Books Ngram Viewer based on articles published online. Solving the goal allows to state the following assymptions a) metacognition is a dimension of cognition “developed” as a result of the permanent control of cognition, b) metacognitive abilities must be identified and developed starting with the preschool stage, and c) at the school stage it is important to observe and mitigate the formation of strategies. The conclusion of the research refers to the topicality and importance of studying metacognition at the preschool and school stages.

Abstract:
The present article considers the economization of society a hypothesis rather than a fact. The hypothesis is tested against the results of a Google ngram viewer analysis of the most frequent function system references in the Google Books corpus for the years 1800-2000. Despite the remarkable growth figures in the English, French, and German language corpora as related to economic word frequency shares, the results suggest the rejection of the economization hypothesis. In fact, the growth trends of economic word frequencies are stopped in all of the three language areas, in none of which the economy ever reached a dominant position throughout the entire 200 years. The results give reason to assume that the idea of an economized society is an intellectual artifact rather than a fact. This fact is emphasized not to prove the marginal relevance of research in economic risks and benefits, but rather in terms of a suggestion to consider re-focusing research foci and drawing increased attention to function systems beyond the politico-economic double stars of social science. Maybe even the solution to the present economic crises is not in more, but rather in less attention to the economy.

Abstract:
This article investigates the interplay of lexical competition and socio-historical events through a close examination of the use of gambling and gaming based on large-scale synchronic and diachronic corpora. We first set the background for comparison through a synchronic study of the collocational patterns and grammatical relations of the two words using Sketch Engine. We show that gambling tends to be associated with negatively perceived activities and strong disapproval, whereas gaming tends to collocate with recreational activities, business, and technology. Using Google Books Ngram Viewer, we focus on the drastic diachronic changes in use of the two words, from competition to co-development. Based on corpora trends, we correlate the rise and fall of the two words and the change in their competition relation to particular socio-historical events: gold rushes, sports betting, the popularity of video games, and the gaming industry boom. The classical competition model of near synonyms remained valid until recent socio-economic events introduced additional and unique meanings for both words. The article thus shows that linguistic variations as collective human behavior changes can be leveraged to evidence other collective human behavior changes.

Abstract:
Almost all human activity spheres, from the health care system to the education system, were unprepared for the pandemic. This, in turn, has slowed down the progress in achieving sustainable development goals. The Sustainable Development Goals 4 “Quality Education” and 8 “Decent Work and Economic Growth” were particularly vulnerable. In addition, the widespread concern was caused in the context of the transition to a “knowledge-based economy”. This paper analyzes the readiness of the scientific community to provide preconditions for the acceleration of these SDGs achievements. To do this, a meta-analysis of the academic literature on SDG 4, SDG 8, and the knowledge-based economy during 2015–2021 was conducted. Several special methods and instruments were used, including Scopus, WoS, VosViewer, Publish or Perish, Google Trends, and Google Books Ngram Viewer. The results show the inability of the modern academic community to provide a theoretical and empirical framework for a successful transition to a knowledge-based economy, taking into account the need to achieve sustainability. This is partly due to the relative subject novelty and the lack of academic attention. The challenges posed by the pandemic (lockdowns, unemployment, closing of educational institutions, financial flows reorientation, etc.) together with potential threats (new pandemic, climate change, population displacement, armed conflicts, etc.) necessitate a radical intensification of academic activity in economics to achieve SDGs.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the utility of corpus linguistics and digitised newspaper archives in management and organisational history. Design/methodology/approach The paper draws its inferences from Google NGram Viewer and five digitised historical newspaper databases – The Times of India, The Financial Times, The Economist, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal – that contain prints from the nineteenth century. Findings The paper argues that corpus linguistics or the quantitative and qualitative analysis of large-scale real-world machine-readable text can be an important method of historical research in management studies, especially for discourse analysis. It shows how this method can be fruitfully used for research in management and organisational history, using term count and cluster analysis. In particular, historical databases of digitised newspapers serve as important corpora to understand the evolution of specific words and concepts. Corpus linguistics using newspaper archives can potentially serve as a method for periodisation and triangulation in corporate, analytically structured and serial histories and also foster cross-country comparisons in the evolution of management concepts. Research limitations/implications The paper also shows the limitation of the research method and potential robustness checks while using the method. Practical implications Findings of this paper can stimulate new ways of conducting research in management history. Originality/value The paper for the first time introduces corpus linguistics as a research method in management history.

Abstract:
When reading in the 18th century became an activity common among an ever growing part of the European population and thereby a socially more visible cultural phenomenon, a need arose to create concepts and linguistic terms to refer to the new types of reading behavior. The new masses of readers did not seemingly have a rational goal for their reading, they just read for the sake of reading itself. Therefore, an explanation for their behavior was that they had a love of reading. To speak about people’s love of reading became a recurrent feature of the discourse on reading, a sub-discourse of its own, the discourse on the love of reading. The birthplace of the discourse may have been in 17th century France, wherefrom it was mediated into other countries and language areas. Even the contemporaries believed that the reading mania was contagious, and expected, feared, or hoped that something similar would happen in their own country. This caused debate and the use, even invention, of words and phrases that belong to the discourse on love of reading. Even the words and phrases used for speaking about reading migrated over linguistic, political, and social borders. The initiation, growth, and diffusion of the discourse can be followed by searching the typical words and phrases that indicate the presence of the discourse. Data were obtained from Google Books Ngram Viewer and national full-text databases of books and newspapers. A map representing the geographical diffusion of the discourse in Europe until the 20th century is constructed. The historical conditions for the diffusion of the discourse are discussed. Methodological problems are discussed and future research is outlined.

The motivation of medical workers is essential to society since the quality of their work affects the individual and public health. The authors highlighted the special role of state and municipal authorities in motivating medical professionals. The study aims to identify the main directions and elaborate the recommendations to build motivational management models in health care facilities. The study reveals the essence and objectives of personnel policy management in health care facilities. The main methods of motivating health workers were analyzed. The authors evaluated the impact of health reforms on health workers’ motivation. The study proposed several ways to improve the motivational management models. The authors conducted an in-depth analysis of economic and non-economic motivation in health care facilities. The methodological basis of the study is comparative analysis, the method of scientific abstraction, induction and deduction analysis, and synthesis. The practical implementation involved the online services Google Ngram Viewer and SciVal. The findings proved the need to develop the health care quality performances and their approval at the local level. The authors concluded that it is necessary to elaborate on a local program of employees’ motivation of utility non-profit enterprises to implement qualitative indicators. This program may include the mayor’s award, awards free internship programs, invitations to cultural events, symbolic gifts, etc. The obtained results showed that the health reform didn’t cover all activity areas of the health care institutions while the funding for medical care per one patient was insufficient. Therefore, the study emphasized the urgency to solve the above strategic problem in state and municipal management in Ukraine. The findings could be useful for the state and the municipal government of Ukraine in elaborating on motivation programs for health workers and their maintenance.

Abstract:
The article deals with the rare and uncommon vocabulary used in contemporary French political discourse. Nowadays discourse studies are becoming increasingly complex and multidimensional. Political discourse is an essential component of everyday political life. The choice of research question is determined by its contribution to cross-cultural communication, as well as by the lack of discursive explorations regarding the rare and uncommon vocabulary. Our hypothesis is that this type of lexis would have some pragmatic motivation and may serve to realize a certain number of communication tasks. Thus, our research aims to describe the collected samples and reveal their pragmatic potential. Discursive analysis coupled with frequency evaluation shapes a methodological framework for our study. The total number of lexical samples is 32 units coming from public speeches, debates and interviews of contemporary French politicians. We have checked the frequency profile of all collected observations on the Google Books French Corpus Ngram Viewer. In order to test the relevance of the corpus and optimize the interpretation of results, we have also introduced a «control group», which contain 31 lexical units expectedly present in political lexicon. Our analysis shows that the rare and uncommon vocabulary serves various pragmatic goals, such as demonstrating the speaker’s performance, capture the audience's attention, achieving a euphemistic effect and some others. Our research gives us ground to affirm that the pragmatic effects of this type of lexical phenomena are due to its ability to break the functional isomorphism of discourse space. The arising disharmony may be caused by temporary disparity (obsolete words), topical mismatch (special vocabulary) or cultural variance (book words with complex semantics, little-known words or constructions, regional and foreign language borrowings). In general, our research leads us to conclude that the rare and uncommon vocabulary possess diverse pragmatic functions, which present an undoubted interest in further research.
