Atrobucca nibe distributing in coastal water from the west Indian Ocean to the west Pacific Ocean is one of the species in Sciaenidae. Benthic layer with sand and mud is the habitat of Atrobucca nibe, thus the fishery of Atrobucca nibe usually use trawler as fishing method or gill net、pole and lines boote、long line and set net. There are three main fishing ground in the East China Sea, and the southern fishing ground includes north Taiwan although A. nibe can be found in all surrounding waters. Past researches indicated that the spawning seasons of A. nibe in north Taiwan was shorter than south west Taiwan and north Taiwan had more females than south west Taiwan according to the sex ratio, hence research on identifying the stock of A. nibe between areas is need. We collected A. nibe from three different habitats and analysed length composition, length-weight relationships, condition factor, spawning season, the length of mature, sex ratio, histological examination of ovary, carbon and oxygen stable isotope of otolith and using scale to determine the growth equation of north Taiwan. In the result, length composition seems different among three regions. The slope in linear regression of weight and length and condition factor in north and north east Taiwan is similar but different between north and south west Taiwan, north east and south west Taiwan. The spawning season in north Taiwan is from May to June, July in north east and January to May in south west. The amount between female and male is different in north and north east Taiwan but similar in south west. The type of reproduction is group synchronous base on histological examination of ovary in three region. There is the similar value in carbon and oxygen stable isotope of otolith in core region and the growth equation in north Taiwan is Lt =56.29 (1-e -0.12 (t+1.56)). The result of stable isotope of otolith indicate that they experienced similar environment when they were young. According to the different in condition factor, relationships of weight and length, sex ratio and spawning season between north and south west Taiwan, we should separate A. nibe in Taiwan into two different stock. We should investigate the reason making difference in north and south west Taiwan in the future.

The black croaker (Atrobucca nibe) is one of the important commercial species for trawl fishery in southwestern Taiwan. This study aims to understand the reproductive biology of black croaker in the waters off southwestern Taiwan. A total of 871 specimens (348 females and 523 males) were sampled monthly from the trawl catches landed at Tongkang fishing port from July 2012 to July 2013. The range of total length (TL) and body weight (BW) in this study are 158.3-480 mm and 42.6-1247.4 g, respectively. The relationships between total length (TL) and body weight (BW) estimated as BW=2.0X10-5TL2.9248 (R2=0.974,n=348) for females and BW=2.0X10-5TL2.9068 (R2=0.967,n=523) for males. Based on the macroscopic appearance, histological examination of ovary, gonadosomatic index, and oocyte diameter monthly distribution, the spawning season for black croaker in the coastal waters off southwestern Taiwan is from January to May and peaks in March to May. Mean fecundity and mean batch fecundity of this species were estimated as 247,426±227,408 and 57,576±37,205, respectively. Relative fecundity and relative batch fecundity of this species were estimated as 139~1387 and 42~265, respectively. The sex ratio is 0.40 (Female/Total) and females outnumbered males at ≥ 300 mmTL. The sizes at 50% maturity (L50) were estimated 309.68 mm TL and 243.73 mm TL for the female and male, respectively. Logistic curves describing the relationship between proportion of maturity at each length interval and total length were estimated as P=1/(1+e6.29-0.02TL) for females and P=1/(1+e5.51-0.02TL) for males.

The purpose of this study were to understand the seasonal change of sonic muscle in the black croaker (Atrobucca nibe) and some works have been done as follow: (1) Characteristics of sound The frequency of the call ranged from 180~3000 Hz with a fundamental frequency (326.1±40.7Hz). Each call consisted of a train of 2-7 pluses. The duration of each call was mainly ranged from 80~360ms correlated with the pulse number (ANOVA, p<0.05). (2) Structure of sonic muscle Extrinsic sonic muscles lying adjacent to the swimbladder were only found in the male black croaker. The C.S.A. (cross section area) of sonic muscle fibers was significantly smaller than those of abdominal muscle fiber (t-test P<0.05). A core-like structure (central core) and alternating ribbons of sarcoplasmic retuiculum and myofibrils were found in the cross section of sonic muscle fiber. The mitochondria distributed within the central core and around the peripheral of sonic muscle fiber. Two types of sonic muscle fiber (IIa, IIc) were identified and more than 99% of the sonic muscles were composed of Type IIa fibers. (3) Annual variation of sonic muscle The length and width of sonic muscle did not exhibit annual variation, but the thickness and weight of sonic muscle did. The C.S.A. of sonic muscle fiber increase to the highest value of 528.59±122.90μm2 in May and decrease to the lowest value of 127.37±9.36μm2 from October to December. Obvious central core and well developed sarcoplasmic reticulum were noted in hypertrophied sonic muscle fibers. (4) Annunal cycle of gonad condition. G.S.I.(Gonadosomatic Index) of both sex approached the peak value during March and May. Their gonadal development reveled the predominance of mature gametes. H.S.I. (Hepatosomatic Index) of both sexes inversely decreased to the lowest value during March to May and declined to a constant level. The female increased their H.S.I. abruptly during December and February may be due to the synthesis of vitellogenin in the liver. Sonic muscle of black croaker varied significantly with the gonadal condition. The changes of sonic muscle in the spawning season will lead to increase sound amplitude that may be helpful for spawning success in the dim-light evening and high-turbidity inshore. Therefore, those seasonal changes of sonic muscle may be the adaptation for reproduction.

The black croaker ~u2;Atrobucca~u1; ~u2;nibe~u1; of 758 specimens , caught by small trawler and bottom longline in Tungkang waters from April 1986 to May 1987, were determining age and growth from otolith annuli. Opaque annuli were formed in otolith once per year during May to July. The oldest fish found in this study were 8 yrs for female and 7 yrs for male, respectively. There are significant differences in the relationship of total length (TL) and otolith radius (R). These are: TL=79.410R-110.225 (TL:mm; R:mm) for female and TL=77.143 R-104.071 for male. The von Bertalanffy growth equations are estimated as: Lt=533.84{1-exp[-0.183(t+0.316)]} (mm) for female and Lt=525.77{1-exp[-0.187(t+0.214)]} for male. The relationship between body weight (W) and total length for both sexes, fitted by allometric growth equation, are W=1.208*10-5* L^2.968 (W:g; L:mm) for female and W=1.374*10^-5L^2.936 for male. The von Bertalanffy growth equations expressed in weight are : Wt=1500.97 {1-exp[-0.183(t+0.316)]}^2.968 (g) for female and Wt = 1333.55 {1-exp[-0.187(t+0.214)]}^2.936 for male.

Fishery biology of the black croaker (Atrobucca nibe) caught in surrounding waters of Guei-San Island, northeastern Taiwan from Oct. 2005 to Oct. 2006 were examined, and the results were compared with similar study conducted during 1982-1984 period to evaluate fishing impacts on the species. In total, 570 A. nibe were collected, and the sexes-combined length-weight relationship for the species was W=0.00692L3.10. The spawning season of the species was from April to June, and the size at first maturity for males was 19 cm, and 24 cm for females. The fecundity ranged from 35,130 to 1,138,272, and the sex ratio was different from 0.5 during spawning season, but also differences in other months. The condition and visceral indices both increase during spawning season, maintain high level, and decreased to low value during December-April, while the Hepatosomatic Index was high during the fall before it decreased in November-December. The index increased again before spawning and dropped to the lowest value in June (after spawning). These patterns indicated that major feeding season of A. nibe was mainly in the summer and fall, and the species may use energy reserved in the liver for spawning. The formation of annuli for the species was found between April and May. The maximum ages for male and female fishes were estimated to be about 5 and 13, respectively. The von Bertalanffy growth equations in length (cm) and weight (g) estimated were Lt =48.06(1-e-0.275(t-0.086)) (for ages 1-9) and Lt =64.91(1-e-0.147(t+0.289)) (for ages 1-13), and Wt = 1128.9 (1- e -0.275 (t-0.086) )3.10 (for ages 1-9), Wt = 2866.3 (1- e -0.147 (t+0.289) )3.10 (for ages 1-13). Males matured at age 1 and female at age 2. The age structure of the population was dominated by ages 2 to 3, different from study conducted in 1982-1984 which dominated by ages 2 to 6. The results also indicated that heavy fishing pressure on the population has caused decreases in size and age at first maturity, increase in growth rate, and mean size at each ages also increased. The population was dominated by younger age groups, but the body weight and condition for the same size of the fish decreased. In addition, the population fecundity may decreased up to 43%, indicating that a serious overfishing may have occurred for the species, and a management measure should be imposed immediately for sustainable use of this resource.
