The last decade of the reign of Nicholas I (1845 - 1855) was the time when the projects of renewal of church paintings in Russia appeared. Public discussion of the problems of the tradition of the Russian art started with the publication in 1845 of a brochure "On Icon-paintings" by the Ostrog bishop Anatoly, who wasn't, however, a zealous adherent to the traditional icon-paintings, his "theory" of icon-paintings tending towards neoclassicism. In difference from the Right Reverend Anatoly's approach in his brochure, the Rev'd Grigoriy Debolsky argued for the inseparable connection between the n

Abstract: This paper discusses humanist translations of Greek patristic texts dedicated to Pope Nicholas V. Patristic studies were particularly relevant for his pontificate, which followed the Council of Ferrara-Florence and witnessed the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottoman Turks. Nicholas’s patronage was informed by his wish to unite the eastern and the western church, make Rome the ultimate capital of the Christian world, and preserve the literary heritage of the Byzantine empire. Introduction. The Saint Nicholas Church in Maloshuyka, dated 1638, is notable for being one of the earliest known examples of a widely spread type of wooden temple. Despite its historical and cultural significance, this object remains largely unstudied. To better understand the development of Russian wooden church construction and set up a typology, it is necessary to consider the Saint Nicholas Church in the context of all-Russian church building traditions of the 17th century. A monument of such significance needs to have its own place in the history of Russian wooden architecture.

This work examines the ideas of Nicholas of Cusa (c. 1401-1464). It brings together elements of his thought that have hitherto remained separate in the historiography, and it offers a new interpretation of the continuity between his ecclesiological and his philosophical works. In essence, I suggest that the theme of Cusa's ideas is one of man, and especially of man's intellect, as the conjunction between human and divine. Specifically, I argue that Cusa focuses upon human powers of communication, cognition and interpretation as the means to provide solutions to human conflicts, but equally as
