Abstract:

Abstract:
Charles Nicholas (‘Nick’) Hales was for 40 years a leading figure in UK biomedical research, and for 25 years Head of the Department of Clinical Biochemistry at Cambridge University. During a distinguished career he made major contributions to diabetes research in three quite different fields: development and application of immunoassay methods for polypeptide hormones such as insulin; elucidation of mechanisms regulating insulin secretion; and demonstration of the role of early life nutrition in the development of metabolic disease in adulthood. He had a boundless enthusiasm for science, and especially for exploring new ideas, that infected all who had the privilege of working with him.

Abstract:
In the early nineteenth century, an obscure rural policeman petitioned the French government with an unusual story. Charles Fanaye had served with Napoleon's armies in Egypt. Chased by Mameluks, he was rescued in the nick of time by a black Ethiopian woman and hidden in her home. Threatened in turn by the Mameluks, Marie-Hélène (as the woman came to be called) threw in her lot with the French army and followed Fanaye to France. The couple then sought to wed. They easily overcame religious barriers when Marie-Héléne was baptized in the Cathedral of Avignon. But another obstacle was harder to overcome: an 1803 ministerial decree banned marriage between blacks and whites. Though Fanaye and Marie-Héléne begged for an exception, the decree would plague them for the next sixteen years of their romance.

Abstract:
Recent personal documentary works about major historical events of the twentieth century, e.g., World War II, the Holocaust and the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, offer their readers a rich and multifaceted narrative, or a history that is also "his story," "her story" and that of entire families, cohorts and communities. Often, these works are accompanied by visual artifacts such as photographs, family tress, maps etc., or supported by concise historical surveys. Thus these memoirs complete the work of historians with the lived experiences of the few that represent many. Such is the case with two 2013 books by Charles Farkas and Nick Barlay depicting their mid-twentieth century Hungarian families, one Christian and one Jewish, through two World Wars and the anti-communist uprising, culminating in their escape to the West and in the two authors looking back upon the Hungarian past of their families.

Abstract:
The spectacular surroundings of Kielder Water & Forest Park, in Northumberland, England, are a confluence of opposing states: the man-made and natural; the utilitarian and recreational; the beautiful and isolated; shaped by weather converging from east and west. Kielder Castle was built in 1775 as the Duke of Northumberland's hunting lodge. In recent years the territory has gained notoriety for a series of innovative art and architectural commissions including Belvedere by Softroom Architects (1999), Kielder Skyspace by the American artist James Turrell (2000), Minotaur by architect Nick Coombe and artist Shona Kitchen (2003), and Kielder Observatory by Charles Barclay Architects (2008). This paper outlines one of Kielder's most recent additions – a shelter entitled 55/02 – the result of a collaboration between sixteen*(makers) and manufacturers Stahlbogen GmbH. The work rekindles the symbiotic relationship between design and making once central to the production of architecture. The reawakening of this tradition has been stimulated by the mainstream adaptation of CAD/CAM as an industrial and disciplinary medium which binds the protocols of drawing with those of fabrication. However, as this account of the project shows, the relevance of an increasingly digitised world extends beyond the production of 55/02 as an artefact – it forms the basis of the architecture's relationship with its locality as an industrial, historical, social, cultural and manufactured landscape [1].

Abstract:
Charles Quennell embodied many of the possibilities and contradictions of British architecture in the first decades of the twentieth century. He is a little-known figure today, but one who deserves further consideration, not only for his own remarkably interesting and varied career but also because of the light he sheds on some of the less explored aspects of architecture in the 1895–1935 period. Throughout his life he combined a strong interest in history with a search for efficiency and design appropriate for the modern world. Both of these preoccupations were widespread among his generation although, apart from a few notable exceptions, rarely can they be found combined to as great a degree as in Quennell. For example, in 1914 he was a keen exponent of standardization and at work on large romantic houses in Hampstead Garden Suburb. By 1918 he had designed what have been called the first modern houses in the country and had just published the first of the bestselling books in the series co-authored with his wife, A History of Everyday Things in England. In 1930 he was writing a contemporary tract The Good New Days and he built a neo-Palladian villa. He has been little studied to date, the main accounts being Alastair Service’s of his work in Hampstead, a Masters thesis by Nick Collins focused on issues of building conservation, and Graham Thurgood’s article on his 1920s work in Essex.

Abstract:

“To be, or not to be” surely constitutes a strange walk on the tight rope between delusion and reality, and apparently, Robert Fleming is a man with immense problems. Who is Ziggy Stardust, and who is Stephen Dedalus? Is it relevant to claim that there is more of David Bowie’s true personality inside Ziggy than of, for instance Charles Dickens’ great expectations within Pip? By examining Nick Hornby’s novel High Fidelity and it’s main character from a Freudian perspective using Freud’s theories and ideas of the oedipal concept, this is basically a plain attempt in search for a better psychological knowledge and understanding of the musical world of illusion, which finally ends up in a serious effort to interpret the true and inner meanings of Rob’s dreams and personality.

Abstract:
The Maltese Falcon and The Thin Man by Dashiell Hammett, adapted successfully to the screen, revealed the typically American character of the private detective, with Sam Spade and Nick Charles. The last incarnation of Sam Spade by Humphrey Bogart in 1941 John Huston’s movie remains one of the most famous film noir figures. Nick Charles, with William Powell in Woody S. Van Dyke’s film in 1934, was so popular that both the character, escaping his creator, and the actor were reused in a succession of five films, until 1947.Why does the contemporary French public only know the first (character and actor) and why does it almost ignore the second ?Between them, what place does Dashiell Hammett hold, detective then writer, who became a character of detective writer in Hollywood Wim Wenders’s movie Hammett in 1982 ?The study of all Dashiell Hammett novels adaptations, from 1931 to 1942, enables to compare the various representations of his investigator characters. The study of the five movies reusing Nick Charles character allows to follow its lack of coherence. The observation of the change of the public taste, from the Great Depression until the post- Second World War years and the examination of the cinematographic careers of the two actors, explain the Bogart’s fame in France.Eventually, the French editorial revival of Dashiell Hammett at the beginning of the 21st century makes it possible to consider the author figure as a new myth

Capique, Luc. Thesis, Pau, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PAUU1009.

Full text
Abstract:
The theatrical production of the Spanish Golden Age pro-poses numerous plays dealing with contemporary historical subjects. The interest for this historical material can be particu-larly observed in a symbolic playwright of this period: Lope de Vega. Although the purpose of this material can vary, it often possesses an extradramatic interest. The choice of events staged by Lope de Vega is often connected to corresponding events at the time of writing. The play Carlos V en Francia, written in 1604, is a part of these historical plays where we notice an alteration of events in connection with the political current events of Lope de Vega’s time. The work of the thesis presented here proposes a critical edition with notes of Carlos V en Francia by Lope de Vega, preceded by an introductory study which focuses foremost on its historic aspect and its extradramatic interest; and on the dramatic mechanisms de-veloped by the playwright in the system of the characters, the versification and the structure

Abstract:
After reviewing some recent writing by philosophers and psychologists of emotion (including Patrik Juslin and David Huron), this chapter proposes an “attitudinal theory” of emotion as “felt bodily stance,” grounded in Nico Frijda’s behavioral theory of “action tendencies” (or “action readiness”). It proposes emotional “attitudes” displayed within musical “personas,” following persona theorists such as Jenefer Robinson and Charles Nussbaum. It builds on Nussbaum’s model of the musical persona navigating a landscape of tonal forces, adjusting it so as to project discrete emotional categories. It reconciles Nussbaum’s ecological theory with Jenefer Robinson’s “process model” of emotion, arguing that musical emotion emerges gradually through a cycle of primary and secondary appraisals.

Abstract:
Discord between the princes heightened the sense of threat to Italy by the Ottomans. Accordingly, Paul III increased his efforts to broker peace between Charles and Francis. In 1538 he was finally successful when he brought the two monarchs together in Nice where they agreed on a ten-year truce. At the same time, the Ottoman advance towards Italy continued and Paul needed to spend more and more on defensive strategies. The most effective way of increasing income for troops and defences was the sale of Church offices. Thus the reform proposals, if accepted, would have undermined the pope’s entire effort for peace and concord and hence they gained no traction with Paul or other key actors.

Fingar, Thomas. "New Missions, New Challenges: 2005–2008." In Truth to Power. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190940003.003.0007.

Abstract:
Thomas Fingar’s chairmanship began with two overriding challenges: to implement the intelligence reforms of 2004–5 and to repair the damage to the National Intelligence Council’s credibility in the aftermath of the Iraqi WMD debacle. The reforms had created the position of director of national intelligence (DNI), with a large mandate but no staff, and much of the day-to-day analytic support that formerly would have been done by CIA now fell to the NIC—a major shift from its traditional role in strategic analysis. Ironically, in seeking to restore the NIC’s credibility, Fingar found himself in another controversy—this time over an NIE on Iranian WMD that seemed to downplay the threat. Fingar offers a detailed rebuttal of those charges and examines the larger question of the often-fraught relationship between the intelligence community and the Congress. Finally, the NIC produced both a path-breaking analysis of the security implications of climate change, and Global Trends 2025, which took the series to a higher level.

Abstract:
Abstract In this paper two nice examples are investigated where a ‘chain’ of n = (1, 2) pieces of rigid pipes contains incompressible and frictionless flowing fluid. We give an overview about the linear and nonlinear analysis of the autonomous system, i.e. when the pipes contain steady flow. Assuming pulsatile flow, the system becomes time-periodic. The stability charts of the linearized system are generated applying a numerical method based on Chebyshev polynomials. Finally, we analyze the effect of the nonlinear part in some critical points of the obtained stability charts and the dynamic behaviour of the original nonlinear periodic system is simulated numerically. The results are shown in Poincaré maps and bifurcation diagrams.
