Abstract:
Brisbane author Nick Earls holds a position of exceptional significance for a writer in his home town. After some 10 years in the literary limelight, Earls was chosen as the face of the city in a television and print media campaign for Brisbane tourism (the ‘It's happening’ campaign), suggesting that he and his work would be widely recognised, and his opinions respected — key reasons for choosing a celebrity to promote any product. Earls represents a new type of public role for writers, who often must cross boundaries of intellectual respectability and popular cultural or ‘celebrity’ appeal to succeed in the current media climate. Leading up to the Brisbane promotional campaign, Earls had a long association with the local press, which enabled him to work simultaneously as a serious author, comedian, boy-next-door and social commentator. His decision, in his early published novels, to make maximal, unapologetic use of Brisbane as a setting earned him the title of ‘Brisbane's favourite son’ (MacColl 1998). At times he has used this title to his advantage; at other times the press has made him work in an ambassadorial role for Brisbane even as the themes and scenes of his writing were changing. Earls has also had considerable international success, particularly with his first novel for adults, Zigzag Street. Using theories about the production of celebrities and close analysis of Earls' press coverage, this article examines the author as a text, looking at the interaction between Earls, his novels and the broader condition of the contemporary publishing and media industries for clues as to how Earls, over other Brisbane writers, found himself with the keys to the city.

Abstract:
The nick translation and gap filling procedures, without external addition of nicking enzymes, were performed in situ on fixed chromosomes of mouse preimplantation and postimplantation embryos and of bone marrow in order to detect possible DNA single-strand breaks (nicks and (or) gaps). All chromosome preparations were made using the same technique. Nick translation of chromosomal DNA with DNA polymerase I (Pol I) or gap filling with the Klenow fragment of Pol I in the presence of biotinylated-dUTP, demonstrated a regular absence of label on chromosomes of postimplantation embryos and bone marrow. No difference in sensitivity was found between the holoenzyme and the Klenow fragment. In preimplantation embryos, the chromosome reactivity in nick translation was highest at the blastocyst stage and varied according to cleavage divisions of the zygote.Key words: DNA-strand break, chromosomes of mouse embryos, in situ nick translation.

Abstract:
The article analyses the humour in Hermann Huppen and Morphée’s series of comic books about a boy called Nick, with primary focus on the third issue, Ça, c’est Filarmo, Nic [That’s Filarmo, Nick]. Drawing on Bakhtin’s theory of the carnivalesque, the article identifies a variety of humorous devices, including wordplay, puns, quotations, unusual transformations, and mésalliances. Special attention is paid to the visual level of the comic book. Humour is located in visual metamorphoses, invisible “phantom” panels, and the incongruity between words and images. The article also addresses the comic book’s intertextual ties with Little Nemo in Slumberland, a series of comic strips from the early 20th century, and compares the way authority is represented and challenged in the two texts. The impossible spaces that Nick traverses within the chronotope of the road are examined as places that invert the usual hierarchies and relations, allowing Nick to experience a level of agency usually reserved for adults. The end of Nick’s travels across the dreamscape is examined as both a departure and continuation of the pattern from Little Nemo, and as a logical conclusion of a temporary carnivalesque subversion of traditional structures that dominate the adult world.

Abstract:
Introduction: One to three per 1,000 live births suffers from significant hearing impairment. However, 2 to 4 per 100 infants who survived neonatal intensive care have some degree of sensorineural hearing loss. If hearing impairment in newborns is detected earlier, early management can prevent undesirable and often irreversible damage due to late detection. Early detection and the treatment of hearing impairment in children are essential for the development of communication skills, social skills, emotional well-being, and positive self-esteem. Unfortunately, this disability remains undetected for many newborns until it is too late to prevent undesirable and often irreversible damage. Unfortunately, not many studies were done on this topic in Bangladesh. The magnitude of the burden of hearing impairment in the study place might be identified by this study. The objective of the study: Hearing screening was done to see the status of hearing impairment in newborns admitted to NICU.
Methodology: A prospective observational study was conducted in the department of neonatology, BSMMU. Newborn admitted to the NICU during the study period was the study population. The newborn who met the inclusion criteria was screened with TEOAE close to discharge from the NICU or before one month of age. A second screen was done with TEOAE again after one month of 1st screen but prior to 3 months of postnatal age if referred in 1st screen. Diagnostic ABR was done prior to 3 months of the postnatal age if referred in both the 1st and 2nd screen.
Results: 426 valid recordings from 493 newborns admitted to the NICU enrolled consecutively constitute the basis of this study. Fourteen newborns were found to have hearing impairment among 426 newborns (3.3%). 2 newborns had unilateral hearing loss, and their hearing losses were moderate in nature. The other 12 newborns in their 24 ears had different grades of hearing loss. It was mild hearing loss in 3 ears, moderate in 9 ears, severe in 8 ears, and profound in 4 ears.
Conclusion: Hearing screening showed that 3.3% of newborns in the NICU have a hearing impairment. It is still an underestimation considering the number of newborns who were lost to follow-up.

Abstract:
This thesis considers and critically analyses literary representations of what I have called “alternative masculinities” within a selection of texts by male writers from the turn of the millennium. The novels chosen for this analysis are Last Drinks by Andrew McGahan (2000), World of Chickens (2001) by Nick Earls and Sushi Central by Alasdair Duncan (2003). The work of R.W. Connell, Doreen Massey and Bruce Bennett will inform a framework blending theories of masculinities, spatiality theories and critical regionalism, providing the tools to conduct a reading of the spaces fictional representations of alternative masculinities engage with. Applying Connell’s hierarchy of masculinities (1995) I examine the emerging textual constructions of alternative masculinities that correspond with the changing cityscape of Brisbane. Within the above texts I argue there is a strong emphasis on the connections between identity and place. This is expressed through references to Brisbane’s social and historical identity and the gendered alignment of Brisbane spaces with particular masculinities.

Abstract:
Infants born prior to 37 weeks gestation are at risk for countless medical problems and developmental delays. In order to help minimize these delays and improve the child’s potential, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Part C, funds Early Intervention (EI) Services. These services may include speech, physical therapy, occupational therapy, or developmental therapy, among others. Purpose and Objective: While numerous studies show the benefits of EI therapies, little is known about barriers to EI participation, what the parents of these children who participate in EI think, or how to improve EI services. This study attempts to answer these questions. Methods: Surveys regarding EI were posted to three preemie parent organizations social media pages, and 140 surveys were returned. These surveys were analyzed for both quantitative and qualitative answers. Qualitative answers were coded and themes were garnered. Results: A total of 148 participants took the survey, and 76% had children that had participated or currently participate in EI. Of the parents who answered their child did not attend EI, most state there was no EI services near them, their child did not qualify, or the EI services were of poor quality. Of the EI parent surveys, most parents (73%) were happy with their child’s EI and their child’s progress, and would recommend EI to others. Most children had EI therapy at least weekly, and were referred to EI prior to leaving the NICU. Parents felt as though their child benefitted in nearly all domains. In addition to the benefits to their child, EI parents also felt as though therapy helped decrease their stress level, gave them a benchmark to measure their child’s progress and connected them with other professionals for their child. Some parents also provided recommendations to improve EI: decrease eligibility requirements, improve communication with parents, provide continuity of care, and create a bridge program for children three and up until they reach school age. Conclusions: With these suggestions, providers can help improve current EI services. Primary care providers should ensure children who are at risk for delays are referred, and EI services should improve communication with parents and enhance continuity of care.

Abstract:
It provides a unique relational opportunity that can be offered shortly after premature birth and it has already shown many benefits for the premature new-born and his/her parents. Like other care practices, skin-to-skin care can still be improved and adjusted to the high-technology environment of industrialized countries, in order to create an optimal sensorimotor and relational niche. Objective: the objective of the research-action of this doctoral thesis was precisely to test the benefit of a change of positioning during skin-to-skin care in NICU. Our hypothesis was that the innovative positioning in Supported Diagonal Flexion ('SDF') would allow improvements in the opportunity for individualized parent-new-born interactions, but also provide support to the construction of parenthood, plagued by premature birth, and improve postural and motor prevention in the premature new-born. Methods: we conducted a prospective monocentric interventional control-case study. Forty-two very premature infants, born between 27 and 32 weeks of gestation, and their mothers were included from may 2015 to july 2016. They were allocated to two groups: group 1 with skin-to-skin installation as it is commonly carried out in situ, which is 'Vertical' with a nursing pillow ('Vertical' group) and group 2 with Sustained Diagonal Flexion ('FDS' group), observed consecutively and matched with group 1 according to the term and weight of the children included. The study looked at the very premature infant, his/her mother et their multimodal communication (vocal, visual, tactile and smile) at five stages: at birth, during the first skin-to-skin, 15 days later, at term corrected age and at three months corrected age, thus on a six to seven months' time-span for each dyad. Results: from the very first skin-to-skin, mothers installed in 'FDS' displayed more affective, active and varied spontaneous tactile mothering, and immediately offer a more dense and musical sound cocoon. Mother in the 'FDS' group had a significantly lower risk of post-partum depression after 15 days of skin-to-skin practice and at term corrected age, they naturally lengthened the duration of skin-to-skin sessions and developed more variability when carrying their infant in their arms. When installed in 'FDS' during hospitalization, the two partners dispayed more multimodal behaviours and the infant's behaviours were contingent (1 s) to the mother's in greater proportion. At term corrected age, these differences partly reversed, but we observed a better investment of the calm awake state, with the child's visual engagement more focused on his/her mother's face. At term corrected age, premature infants in the 'FDS' group showed less postural deformations and a better organization in spontaneous motricity. Conclusion: this doctoral thesis demonstrates that skin-to-skin practice can be improved through the 'SDF' positionning, by physically supporting the new-born, psychologically supporting his/her mother, and finally allowing richer multi-modal mother-child communication by offering the early opportunity to be more sensitive to one another as a basis for the relationship

Abstract:
Comprehensive management in the neonatal nursery involves medical treatment of the infant, as well as developmental care and the provision of guidance, counselling and information to the family who are part of the decision-making process regarding the infant’s care. Neonatal communication intervention is of utmost importance in a country such as South Africa, which has an increased prevalence of infants at risk for disabilities and where the majority of these infants live in poverty. Speech-language therapists fulfil an important role in the neonatal nursery and are an integral part of the team involved with the high risk neonatal population. Local literature showed a dearth of information on the current service delivery and roles of speech-language therapists and audiologists in neonatal nurseries in the South African context. From an asset-based perspective it appears that the South African population receiving services in neonatal nurseries have unique characteristics. This provides speech-language therapists with ample opportunity to intervene, providing that intervention is well-timed in the neonatal nursery context. The country-wide initiative to implement the evidence-based technique of kangaroo mother care indicates that speech-language therapists should recognise its importance and develop communication based materials and tools to complement this successful neonatal intervention. The aim of the research was to establish whether speech-language therapists have needs for assessment and intervention tools/materials in this context. The study furthermore aimed to compile a locally relevant neonatal communication intervention instrument/tool for use by speech-language therapists in the neonatal nurseries of public hospitals in South Africa in order to propose a solution to address the shortage of tools in the public health context. The study entailed descriptive, exploratory research. During Phase 1, a survey was received back from 39 speech-language therapists and two audiologists in six provinces. The data revealed that participants performed different roles in neonatal nurseries, which were determined by the environment, tools, materials and instrumentation available to them. Many participants were inexperienced, but were resourceful in their attempts to develop and adapt tools/materials. Participants expressed a need for culturally appropriate and user-friendly instruments for parent guidance and staff/team training on the topic of developmental care. During Phase 2 a tool for parent guidance titled “Neonatal communication intervention programme for parents” was compiled for use by speech-language therapists and justified by participants’ roles and needs as well as current early communication intervention (ECI) literature. The programme was piloted by three participants. Certain suggestions for enhancements of the programme were made such as providing a glossary of terms, adapting the programme’s language and terminology, and providing more illustrations. The programme complied with the guiding principles for best practice in ECI (ASHA, 2008) and can therefore contribute to neonatal care of high risk infants in South Africa. Speech-language therapists and audiologists must contribute to neonatal care of high risk infants to facilitate optimal health and development and to support their families. Moss, Margaret Loughery. "Prelude to Fame: Trauma Theory in the Early Short Fiction of Ernest Hemingway." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1805/2768.

Abstract:
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)<br>While it is commonly acknowledged that the primal traumatic events of Hemingway’s time as an ambulance driver in Italy during World War I had a profound influence on his works of fiction, there has been relatively little exploration of the notion that the “working through” which occurred in the recovery from his own personal trauma manifests a complex and interwoven relationship with the writing process. This is certainly not unknown territory for scholars; when Hemingway first embarked upon the earliest fiction writing of his professional career, biographical research indicates he was once again enduring a traumatic experience of sorts. Yet formal trauma theory has rarely been applied to the study of Hemingway’s most intensely autobiographical short fiction. It is my contention that the “working through” of Hemingway’s writing process demonstrated in his published and unpublished Nick Adams stories was prompted by both his defining war-time trauma experience and his later, more private hardships.

Lusney, Nadine. "Stories of Early Experiences of Nursing Care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit from Parents' Whose Infants are born with Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/5229.

Full text
Abstract:
The birth of a child diagnosed with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) involves significant intensive care at the beginning of life and the need for surgery. Parents’ experiences during the acute phase of hospitalization for a critically ill infant not born premature is currently limited in the literature; in particular, there is no literature describing parents’ experiences of nursing care for having a infant with CDH in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Using narrative inquiry this study explores stories of parents’ early experiences of nursing care in the NICU for an infant born with CDH. A thematic analysis revealed a main overarching theme of “not knowing” with three interrelated subthemes related to parents’ need for information and open communication; participation, power and partnership; and nursing presence to transition from not knowing to knowing their infant. The findings from this study suggest that parents want to be recognized as key members within the multidisciplinary team and that the nurse has the ability to facilitate aspects of care to impact parents positively or negatively. Implications for practice focus on supporting parents through evolving empowerment and participation in the care of their infant.<br>Graduate<br>0569

Abstract:
The Gulf of Tehuantepec is well known for having strong offshore winds, which occur predominantly during the winter months when significant atmospheric pressure differences develop between the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean, forcing winds through a mountain gap at the head of the gulf. During the Gulf of Tehuantepec Experiment (GOTEX), conducted in February 2004, we collected surface-wave and wave-breaking measurements using a conical scanning lidar (NASA Airborne Terrain Mapper, ATM) and a downward-looking video camera on the NSF/NCAR C-130 aircraft. We present ATM observations of surface waves as well as statistical and spectral descriptions of the wave field. We also present measurements of the occurrence and strength of breaking using digital video data to identify actively breaking waves. In order to infer the dynamics of breaking from simple physical models, the kinematics of the breaking must be separated from the kinematics of the underlying waves. This is done using linear and nonlinear estimates of the underlying orbital velocities from the spatio-temporal surface displacement data measured by the ATM. Nonlinear estimation of the orbital velocities is described in a companion paper in this symposium (Grue et al., OMAE 2008). Frequent breaking is observed under the strong wind forcing. Examples of the spatial structure of waves are compared to simultaneous video imagery, giving an indication of the scale at which wave breaking occurs. The GOTEX observations, to almost full wave development, are tested against the latest wind-wave numerical spectral models that include the effects of wave generation, nonlinear wave-wave interactions and wave dissipation due to breaking. This paper is dedicated to Nick Newman by the lead author in appreciation of Nicks encouragement and assistance when he (WKM) moved to MIT in the early 1980s.
