Brewitt-Taylor, Sam. Christian Radicalism and the Enactment of Secular Theology. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198827009.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter outlines three examples of how secular theology was put into practice in the 1960s: Nick Stacey’s innovations in the parish of Woolwich; the radicalization of the ‘Parish and People’ organization; and the radicalization of Britain’s Student Christian Movement, which during the 1950s was the largest student religious organization in the country. The chapter argues that secular theology contained an inherent dynamic of ever-increasing radicalization, which irresistibly propelled its adherents from the ecclesiastical radicalism of the early 1960s to the more secular Christian radicalism of the late 1960s. Secular theology promised that the reunification of the church and the world would produce nothing less than the transformative healing of society. As the 1960s went on, this vision pushed radical Christian leaders to sacrifice more and more of their ecclesiastical culture as they pursued their goal of social transformation.

Boutin, Aimée. Aural Flânerie. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252039218.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter establishes that scholarly approaches to flâneurs have downplayed the broader impact of the urban experience on the senses and underappreciated their aural acuity. From the type's early formulations by Honoré de Balzac, Auguste de Lacroix, and Victor Fournel, the flâneur is attuned to city sounds, and flâneur-writing arranges them to portray the city as concert. The art of flânerie consists of transforming the empirical confusion of city sounds into a unified musical composition. As the clamor of the streets promoted selective hearing, street musicians were targeted as major contributors to the city as concert. Close readings of verbal and visual sketches by Delphine de Girardin, Maria d'Anspach, Bertall, and Old Nick show that class-biased ideas about concert music influenced their often humorous reactions to street noise; nevertheless, the neurasthenic bourgeois ear was often less than receptive to the intrusive noise of foreign street performers. In contrast, Victor Fournel waxed enthusiastic about the people's love of music. A close reading of his Ce qu'on voit dans les rues de Paris makes sense of his distinctive appreciation for street music.

Abstract:
The success of Ballad for Americans allowed Latouche to move into nice quarters in Greenwich Village and marry Theodora Griffis. During this period, that is, the early 1940s, his new friends included Carson McCullers and Leo Lerman. He also continued to befriend notable émigrés, including Brion Gysin, Jimmy Ernst, Yul Brynner, Marlene Dietrich, Eleonora and Francesco von Mendelssohn, Anaïs Nin, and Ruth Yorck. Meanwhile, his interest in the occult was reflected in his friendships with medium Eileen Garrett, palmist Margaret Mamlok, sand astrologers Charles Jayne and Natacha Rambova. He and many of his friends took stimulants under the supervision of Dr. Max Jacobson, with whom Latouche collaborated on some projects, and who became known as the notorious Dr. Feelgood.

Geller, Theresa L., and Julia Leyda, eds. Reframing Todd Haynes. Duke University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1215/9781478022626.

Full text
Abstract:
For three decades, award-winning independent filmmaker Todd Haynes, who emerged in the early 1990s as a foundational figure in New Queer Cinema, has gained critical recognition for his outsider perspective. Today, Haynes is widely known for bringing women’s stories to the screen. Analyzing Haynes’s films including Safe (1995), Velvet Goldmine (1998), Far from Heaven (2002), and Carol (2015), as well as his unauthorized Karen Carpenter biopic, Superstar (1987), and the television miniseries Mildred Pierce (2011), the contributors to Reframing Todd Haynes reassess his work in light of his long-standing feminist commitments and his exceptional career as a director of women’s films. They present multiple perspectives on Haynes’s film and television work and on his role as an artist-activist who draws on academic theorizations of gender and cinema. The volume illustrates the influence of feminist theory on Haynes’s aesthetic vision, most evident in his persistent interest in the political and formal possibilities afforded by the genre of the woman’s film. The contributors contend that no consideration of Haynes’s work can afford to ignore the crucial place of feminism within it. Contributors. Danielle Bouchard, Nick Davis, Jigna Desai, Mary R. Krebs, Dennis L. Survival of the Virtuous. Oxford University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197629482.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Survival of the Virtuous offers an account of how moral traits evolved in the human species. It explains why we are not necessarily bad by nature, why we are not evolved to look out only for number one, and why nice guys need not finish last. It offers an account of how virtuous behaviors such as altruism, justice, honesty, loyalty, self-control, purity, and respect for authority evolved in our species (and in other species as well). It argues that the key to solving puzzles of morality such as what it is, how we acquire moral traits, why we sometimes behave badly, and how we make moral decisions lies in figuring out what adaptive functions moral traits served in early human environments and how they are influenced by social learning, culture, and strategic social interactions in the modern world. It offers evidence that the primary function of virtuous behaviors is to enable individuals to advance their interests by cooperating with others and that moral decision-making mechanisms evolved and develop in a Russian doll manner. Uniquely human “new brain” mechanisms that enable us to make moral decisions in rational ways evolved on top of “old brain” mechanisms that induce us (and some other animals) to make moral decisions in more emotional-intuitive ways. Although we tend to become increasingly rational as we develop, we retain the capacity to make moral judgments in primitive ways, and reason is a tool that can be used for good or evil.

Laursen, Finn. The Founding Treaties of the European Union and Their Reform. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acrefore/9780190228637.013.151.

Full text
Abstract:
Today’s European Union (EU) is based on treaties negotiated and ratified by the member states. They form a kind of “constitution” for the Union. The first three treaties, the Treaty of Paris, creating the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) in 1951, and the two Treaties of Rome, creating the European Economic Community (EEC) and European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM) in 1957, were the founding treaties. They were subsequently reformed several times by new treaties, including the Treaty of Maastricht, which created the European Union in 1992. The latest major treaty reform was the Treaty of Lisbon, which entered into force in 2009. Scholarship concerning these treaties has evolved over time. In the early years, it was mostly lawyers writing about the treaties, but soon historians and political scientists also took an interest in these novel constructions in Europe. Interestingly, American political scientists were the first to develop theories of European integration; foremost among these was Ernst Haas, whose 1958 book The Uniting of Europe developed the theory later referred to as neo-functionalism. The sector on integration of coal and steel would have an expansive logic. There would be a process of “spill-over,” which would lead to more integration. It turned out that integration was less of an automatic process than suggested by Haas and his followers. When integration slowed down in the 1970s, many political scientists lost interest and turned their attention elsewhere. It was only in the 1980s, when the internal market program gave European integration a new momentum that political scientists began studying European integration again from theoretical perspectives. The negotiation and entry into force of the Single European Act (SEA) in the mid-1980s led to many new studies, including by American political scientist Andrew Moravcsik. His study of the SEA included a critique of neo-functionalism that created much debate. Eventually, in an article in the early 1990s, he called his approach “liberal intergovernmentalism.” It took final form in 1998 in the book The Choice for Europe. According to Moravcsik, to understand major historic decisions—including new treaties—we need to focus on national preferences and interstate bargaining. The study of treaty reforms, from the SEA to the Lisbon Treaty, conducted by political scientists—including the treaties of Maastricht, Amsterdam, and Nice—have often contrasted neo-functionalism and liberal intergovernmentalism. But other approaches and theories were developed, including various institutionalist and social constructivist frameworks. No consensus has emerged, so the scholarly debates continue.
