Abstract:
Purpose: We evaluate presenting features of pediatric thyroid eye disease, and discuss the morbidity and clinical course of this condition in the pediatric population. Methods: A retrospective chart review of 11 patients referred for evaluation of thyroid eye disease at a pediatric tertiary care facility in Miami, Florida. Results: The average age at presentation was 12.7 years. The most common ocular complaint was mild irritation. Patients tended to be positive for thyroid stimulating immunoglobulin and thyroid peroxidase antibody. The average displacement on Hertel exophthalmometry was 21mm for the right eye, and 21.45mm for the left eye. Lower scleral show was the most common eyelid finding. Conclusion: In contrast to thyroid eye disease in adults, the condition tends to present with mild ocular findings in children. Pediatric patients presenting with thyroid eye disease respond very well to medical therapy aimed at enhancing the altered ocular surface.

Abstract:
Over the past 3 decades or so, some variation and revision have been introduced into the recording, reporting, and interpretation of the prime historical benchmark of individual golf achievement: number of established major tournaments won. In the interest of accuracy, consistency, and even equity, some analytic record-keeping suggestions are proffered here, based on coherence and logic, toward presenting the history of golf’s major championships in the fairest possible way. Idiosyncrasies of that historical sequence mean that the resolution is not obvious and more taxonomic work remains to be done. However, acceptance of the principles and conventions proposed herein may move the golf history culture and even basic golf chronicling closer to advantageous closure. One competitive implication of this reanalysis applies, significantly, to the total of “majors” won by historical greats Jack Nicklaus, Bobby Jones, and Tiger Woods.

Abstract:
Background: ETV/CPC has become an increasingly common technique for the treatment of infant hydrocephalus. Both flexible and rigid neuroendoscopy can be used, with little empirical evidence directly comparing the two. We, therefore, used a propensity-matched cohort and survival analysis to assess the comparative efficacy of flexible and rigid neuroendoscopy. Methods: Individual data were collected through retrospective review of infants < 2 years of age, treated at one of 2 hospitals: 1) Boston Children’s Hospital, exclusively utilizing flexible neuroendoscopy, and 2) Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, exclusively utilizing rigid neuroendoscopy. Patient characteristics and post-operative outcome were assessed. A propensity score (PS) model was developed to balance patient characteristics in the case mix. Results: A PS model was developed with 5 independent variables: chronological age, sex, hydrocephalus etiology, prior CSF diversion, and prepontine scarring. PS analysis revealed that compared to flexible neuroendoscopy, rigid neuroendoscopy had an ETV/CPC failure OR of 1.43 and 1.31 respectively, compared to unadjusted OR of 2.40. Furthermore, in a Cox regression analysis controlled by propensity score, rigid neuroendoscopy had a HR of 1.10, compared to unadjusted HR of 1.61. Conclusions: Much of the difference in ETV/CPC outcome between endoscopy types is attributed to the case mix. An observational study or randomized controlled trial is required to provide evidence-based guidelines.

This thesis explores the application of H2/H [infinity] control synthesis methods to launch vehicle ascent, specifically the pitch-plane control of the Kistler Aerospace launch vehicle, K1. A classical single-input, single-output design is also presented in order to assess the true applicability of a modern control synthesis approach to launch vehicle ascent. In addition, the K1 dynamics are developed to include aerodynamic, fuel-sloshing, tail-wags-dog, and body-bending effects. The objective of the modern control synthesis approach presented here is to design compensation for pitch tracking and disturbance rejection. It combines techniques in optimal H2, optimal H [infinity], and sub-optimal control synthesis to create pitch control laws that provide 6 dB of gain margin and 302 of phase margin. The sensitivity and high-order of traditional H2/H [infinity] synthesis are addressed through the implementation of uncertainty in the design model and the application of balanced, model order reduction on the resulting controllers. To reduce the complexity in applying these methods, a hierarchical approach and design strategy is employed. Additionally, a graphical user interface is presented that exploits the capabilities of commercial software during the design. A comparison of the two design methods, classical and modern, reveals that each design architecture is capable of creating controllers of equivalent order with both nominal and robust performance. The advantages of the modern approach are realized in the design process itself. The hierarchical methodology and intuitive nature of the modern approach helps to manage the selection of design parameters. Whereas, classical methods provide less insight into strategies for parameter selection and control design. Additionally, the ability to address disturbances and uncertainty in the modern approach offers a more direct alternative to the ad hoc and iterative nature of classical methods, and although not fully exploited here, the modern approach does allow coupling between channels to be accommodated. These conclusions confirm the viability of a modern control synthesis approach and establish the foundation for future development of modern-based, ascent control laws.

Abstract:

Ah! This show is a physical explanation of discovery - an attempt to better understand the role of contemporary hand thrown pottery and what it means to make it. A hand thrown pot can contain nourishment as well as it can provide it. Pottery can infuse artful practice and a direct relationship to the producer into everyday objects. It is the potter's responsibility to continue to push form and surface to make the best pots possible. Well crafted handmade objects support the argument for locality and autonomy, which give them greater value in a contemporary context rooted in ambiguous commodity consumption. It is our responsibility to craft the things we consume.

Stevens, Nicklaas. "Implementation of change management with reference to Afrikaans at MNet and SABC / Nicklaas Stevens." Thesis, North-West University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/1049.

Full text
Abstract:
The study deals with the extent to which change should be implemented by institutions. It is of paramount importance that staff be at the centre of the change throughout the entire process. It is worth noting that in the absence of this serious phenomenon, there seems to be little hope of raising employee confidence, as is notable from the responses of the employees of MNet and SABC. The sociopolitical history of South Africa has played a major role in language used in the country's media: television, newspapers and radio. English is by far the most widely used language in the media, followed by Afrikaans and the African languages in that order. Except for multilingual programmes, it was relatively easy to determine the amount of airtime allocated to each individual language. A previous study shows that the distribution of airtime on South African television is strikingly uneven, with English taking up 91,95% of the total weekly airtime, Afrikaans 5,66% and all nine African languages sharing a mere 2.39% of airtime collectively. The study further deals with the origin and development of the Afrikaans language in South Africa. For many years Afrikaans took centre stage in South Africa. Especially during the apartheid years the use and power of Afrikaans increased dramatically on the SABC. Since 1994 English has gained more territorial political clout than Afrikaans in virtually all the country's institutions, including the media. The SABC took a political decision to cut vigorously on Afrikaans programming. That triggered MNet's decision to embark on a business decision to establish a dedicated Afrikaans channel. This study shows that employees at the SABC are generally unsatisfied with the broadcaster's decision and staff at MNet are in agreement with the fact that Afrikaans has lost most of its privileges and political prestige it had during the apartheid era, it could still present a challenge to the hegemony of English in all the higher domains, except diplomacy.

Abstract:
Creative people are driven by certain inner forces, inner needs that are part cognitive, part affective. One such force is intellectual curiosity: the need to know or understand. Another compelling drive is dissatisfaction with the status quo. We saw this as the force that impelled Nicklaus Wirth into creating Pascal (Chapter 1, Section 1.7). But few in the emerging computer science community of the first age of computer science epitomized this characteristic more fiercely than Edsger W. Dijkstra. In his case his discontent was with the direction programming had taken in the 1960s. And the strength of his dissatisfaction was never more evident than in a letter to the editor of the Communications of the ACM in 1968. The practice of communicating new scientific results by their discoverers in the form of compact letters to the editors of scientific journals was, of course, well established in the natural sciences. The British journal Nature (London) had established this tradition right from its inaugural issue in 1869. But in an upstart discipline, as computer science still was, this practice as a means of scientific communication was quite unusual. (In one of his celebrated handwritten “EWD notes,” Dijkstra, reflecting retrospectively, explained that his short paper was published as a letter to bypass the usual publication pipeline and that the editor who made this decision was Nicklaus Wirth.) Dijkstra had long been concerned with the question of program quality and how one may acquire confidence in the reliability or correctness of a program. But, as the title of the letter— “Goto Statement Considered Harmful”— tells us, the object of his discontent lay in the use of the goto statement— the unconditional branch available in one notation or another in most programming languages, including Algol-like ones. Dijkstra claimed that the quality of the programmers decreased as a function of the frequency of the goto statements in their programs. And so he proposed that the goto should be banished from all high- level programming languages.

Abstract:
Abstract Can one train for peak performance? As a choral conductor, you are no different from an elite athlete. An athlete’s peak performance is the outcome of physical, technical, and mental factors, and so is yours. Mind and body cannot be separated in peak performance, which exhibits the strength of the mind-body link. In it, what one thinks is echoed by what one does. There is, of course, no substitute for complete mastery of technical skills—stick technique, an informed ear, effective leadership, and so on. However, the higher the level of physical and technical skills, the more important the mental aspects of performance become. For example, during the Olympics, every competitor has high technical and physical skills. That is why Olympic athletes readily admit that mental skills alone make the difference between the winners and losers in those contests. As Mark Spitz said in Montreal, after winning seven gold medals: “At this level of physical skill, the difference between winning and losing is 99 percent psychological.” The great golfer Jack Nicklaus said, “Mental preparation is the single most critical element in peak performance” (emphasis added).

Abstract:
In his chapter, Tobias Nicklas focuses on the dynamic interconnections between what became the early Christian canon of the Holy Writings of the Bible and the identities resulting from the history of various Christian groups. The development of the canon was decisive for the beliefs of the Christians and their identity, but changes in the group identities led to changes of perspectives on the canon in various contexts. Thus, the ‘canonical process’ did not come to its end with the discontinuity of the closure especially of the canon. As a matter of fact, other writings that do not claim to be part of the canon, fulfil a function analogous to canonical writings, as the reception history of several so-called apocryphal writings and martyrdom passages imply. Building on Maurice Hallbwachs’ concepts of ‘social memories’ (Les cadres sociaux de la mémoire), and ‘collective memory’ (La mémoire collective), Nicklas critically analyses the relationship between memory and martyrdom and argues that while most of the canonical texts have been largely forgotten the landscapes of memory which were created by these texts still exist. This argument highlights the contestation but also the non-fixation and exclusivity of canons.

Abstract:
Abstract Many scientific developments pioneered by governmental research organizations are subsequently applied to consumer products. The use of shape memory alloys (SMAs) by NASA at the end of the 20th century motivated companies to incorporate these materials and their unique properties into marketable goods. In 1997, NASA reported that the Nicklaus Golf Company had developed a line of SMA-augmented golf clubs; the company claimed that its SMA club inserts reduced vibration and imparted greater spin on balls during contact. Inspired by these claims of enhanced performance, this work investigates the impact of SMA clubfaces on golf ball carry distance and shot accuracy for several clubface contact locations and slice angles. For each combination of shot parameters tested, the ball exit velocity and spin were computed via finite element analysis (FEA) using an explicit dynamic model that accounts for stress-induced phase transformation in SMA material regions and golf ball responses calibrated from experimental testing. The exit velocity and spin rate were used to calculate the ball flight trajectories for each case simulated. Alloy and design assumptions, including the addition of an internal cavity, were made to facilitate the development of stresses necessary for meaningful SMA material responses during clubface-ball impacts. These assumptions lead to findings such as nearly equivalent performances for geometrically identical clubheads with steel and SMA clubface inserts. Overall, this work shows that the use of reasonable SMA materials in a clubhead operating under normal weather conditions is inconsequential to shot accuracy and carry distance.
