As US news organizations have faced twin crises in funding and authority in recent years, innovation has become a key concept and ideal driving many interventions aimed at saving journalism. Often, ahistorically and uncritically deployed notions of innovation elide questions of digital journalism’s democratic aspirations in favor of market-oriented solutions. To critically examine the discourse around innovation, this article interrogates documents produced by think tanks and non-profit institutes researching the future of journalism: the Knight Foundation, the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University, Harvard’s Nieman Foundation, and the Shorenstein Center at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, among others. A post-industrial vision for journalism emerges with an overriding and celebratory focus on innovation. We argue that this discourse marginalizes normative concerns about journalism’s democratic purpose and rests on an entrepreneurial logic that seeks to dictate digital journalism’s broader public virtues.

In the context of the ongoing financial crisis in U.S. professional journalism, philanthropic foundation-supported nonprofits are increasingly proposed as a solution to the under-provision of civic-oriented news production. Drawing on an analysis of the social composition of boards of directors and interviews with foundation officials and nonprofit journalists, this article examines both the civic contributions and limitations of foundation-supported nonprofit news organizations. Foundations are shown to place many nonprofits in a Catch-22 because of competing demands to achieve both economic “sustainability” and civic “impact,” ultimately creating pressures to reproduce dominant commercial media news practices or orient news primarily for small, elite audiences. Further, media organizations dependent on foundation project-based funding risk being captured by foundation agendas and thus less able to investigate the issues they deem most important. Reforms encouraging more long-term, no-strings-attached funding by foundations, along with development of small donor and public funding, could help nonprofits overcome their current limitations.

Many journalism stakeholders have begun looking to philanthropic foundations to help newsrooms find economic sustainability. The rapidly expanding role of foundations as a revenue source for news publishers raises an important question: How do foundations exercise their influence over the newsrooms they fund? Using the hierarchy of influence model, this study utilizes more than 40 interviews with journalists at digitally native nonprofit news organizations and employees from foundations that fund nonprofit journalism to better understand the impact of foundation funding on journalistic practice. Drawing on previous scholarship exploring extra-media influence on the news industry, we argue that the impact of foundations on journalism parallels that of advertisers throughout the 20th century—with one important distinction: Journalism practitioners and researchers have long forbidden the influence from advertisers on editorial decisions, seeing the blurring of the two as inherently unethical. Outside funding from foundations, on the other hand, is often premised on editorial influence, complicating efforts by journalists to maintain the firewall between news revenue and production.

This article deals with Nordic journalism educators’ conceptions of journalism by placing the concept of normativity at the center. The values, norms and ideas concerning journalism and journalistic practice have previously been studied by journalists and journalism students around the world and in the Nordics, while the Nordic journalism educators’ conceptions have remained more or less without attention. Nevertheless, journalism educators play a crucial role in defining what journalism is and what it is not, and thus largely affect future practitioners’ ideas of journalism. Using a questionnaire that has been employed in previous studies, journalism educators within the academic journalism training in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden (n = 115) were surveyed in terms of their conceptions. It was found that the journalism educators, of which 35 per cent had a doctoral degree, still largely subscribe to the ideas of the welfare state. In addition, the ideas of slow, investigative, constructive and solutions-based journalism have gained high popularity among the Nordic educators, which, we argue, dovetails well with the pedagogical aims of journalism education.

The purpose of this article is to explain what a digital form of journalism, called data journalism, is and how it is applied in practice related to politics. Definitions and various aspects of data journalism (i.a. exemplary variables, most common in data journalism in general, ways of presenting data, factors that data journalists focus on in their work etc.) appear in the first part of article. Politics, as the title of this work indicates, is one of the areas in which this type of journalism is used. In this article, three projects related to data journalism are described. The first example of a tool, based on American politics, used to visualize and obtain data on congressmen and elections in general, is Election DataBot. This paper provides a description of this tool, as well as information about organizations that launched it. The next two initiatives related to data journalism are: European Data Journalism Network (as the name suggests, it refers to European politics) and Media 3.0 Foundation (related to Polish politics). They offer many practical options to observe, analyze and show political data. The research method used in the study is the analysis of thematic online sources. The hypothesis is that data journalism is still a growing branch of journalism that has its adhibition in politics, thus supporting journalists, researchers and others interested in obtaining and visualizing data.

A NEW publication from the Thomson Reuters Foundation reviews the impacts of COVID-19 on journalism in Emerging Economies and the ‘Global South’. Working on the premise that media and journalism in these regions already face even greater challenges than in the ‘West’, this report describes a worsening of the situation through effects of the pandemic. It shows that factors external to media practice and media organisations are having destructive impacts, but proposes remedies which draw on internal strengths and professionalism in journalistic practice. The work is a qualitative research project obtaining analysis from 56 journalists from Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America, out of 15,000 journalists who have done courses offered by the foundation, as a backer of innovation and media freedom.

Research studies consistently demonstrate a disproportionate use of elites, males, and non-minorities as sources. Previous research demonstrated that only enterprise reporting altered journalistic routines and therefore improved source diversity. Civic journalism is a decade-old, foundation-driven effort to encourage journalism organizations to alter their coverage routines to better reflect communities and the public dialogue on issues. Civic journalism encourages greater depth of knowledge of communities, alternative framing for stories, and developing sources within layers of civic life (from officials to private individuals). This study of 1,071 sources in 184 television entries to the James K. Batten Civic Journalism Awards found that civic journalism improved traditional source diversity for women and minorities.

This article examines the extent to which data journalism (DJ) is being taught in Australian universities. It presents the results of interviews with 35 journalism academics about how they are incorporating data journalism into their courses. It includes details about the types of data journalism skills they are teaching, the resources they are using and the hindrances that have met or are making it difficult to teach data journalism. These hindrances include low and varied levels of quantitative literacy and math aversion among students, lack of time for upskilling and limited room in their courses for new material. The study found that at least nine Australian universities have semester-long units dedicated to data journalism and that at least a further nine are teaching it via some lectures and activities. Almost all respondents thought more should be done to incorporate data journalism into the curricula. This article lays a foundation for future exploration of how data journalism could be incorporated into journalism programmes where the staff requires upskilling.

The thesis in the study is anchored on the probing question of establishing changes that have taken place in the profession over a period of 160 years. While providing fresh discussions on the current journalism practice as well as the daunting challenges facing media professionals in Nigeria today, the study provides groundbreaking recommendations to rescue journalism that is almost comatose in Nigeria today. Edwin S. Munger,(1921-2010), professor of Political Geography at Caltech Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California was a renowned specialist on Africa, race and ethnic relations. In his scores of trips to the African continent, he visited every country and lived in South Africa and some others for extended periods. While he expressed opposition to race discrimination and the negative aspects of apartheid measures, he also strongly rejected violence and international pressures to isolate South Africa. He saw such pressures as counterproductive in affecting change. This article deals with his endeavour to build bridges of understanding between and with South Africans so as to bring about change in these policies and as a counter to the growing international pressures to impose harmful sanctions and isolation. It sketches the means by which Munger pursued his objectives through various organisations, among them the leader exchange programmes under US-SALEP, the African Studies Association, Nieman Fellowship Awards and the Cape of Good Hope Foundation.

In a contested information environment, the phrase ‘fake news’ represents the existential challenge to journalists dealing with an audience losing its faith in what journalism does. The traditional role of the Fourth Estate and the responsibilities to inform and keep those in power accountable, are now constantly undermined by a determined counter-offensive that purports to show ‘truth’ and ‘accuracy’ are pliable concepts in the hands of the mainstream media. Journalism educators have to confront this dilemma head-on and affirm within the classroom the priority of the basic tenets of the job – not just reporting accurately and capturing balance, but committing to a process of verification that shows the rigour behind the best kind of journalism. This embrace of traditional journalism’s foundation skills is at the heart of re-establishing the credibility of the job, initially with students, and then, with the community.

Long-running debates over the value of university-based journalism education have suffered from a lack of empirical foundation, leading to a wide range of assertions from both those who see journalism education playing a crucial role in moulding future journalists and those who do not. Based on a survey of 320 Australian journalism students from six universities across the country, this study provides an account of the professional views held by these future journalists. Findings show that students hold broadly similar priorities in their role perceptions – albeit to different intensities from working journalists. The results point to a relationship between journalism education and the way in which students' views of journalism's watchdog role and its market orientation change over the course of their degree – to the extent that, once they are near completion, students have been moulded in the image of industry professionals.

Commentary: In 2009, a two-year diploma course in Journalism and Media began at the Vanuatu Institute of Technology. It was the first full time journalism and media course in the country and was long overdue as the local media industry expanded. It is the only diploma level course offered at the VIT. The Pacific Media and Communications Facility was established at VIT seven years ago as part of an AusAID initiative, managed by MDI International in association with MC Media and Associates. Work in the facility served as the basis of the two-year diploma course. It provided a foundation for more than 30 graduates, many of whom are now employed in the burgeoning media industry in Vanuatu. This commentary traces the background and development of this programme.

Journalism, more so than other professions, is entangled with technology in a unique and profoundly impactful way. In this context, the technological developments of the past decades have fundamentally impacted the journalistic profession in more ways than one, opening up new possibilities and simultaneously creating a number of concerns for people working in the media industry. The changes that were brought about by the rise of automation and algorithmic technology can mainly be observed in four distinct fields of application within journalism: automated content production, data mining, news dissemination and content optimization. This article focuses on algorithmic journalism and aims to highlight the ways that algorithmic technology is being utilized within those fields, as well as pointing out the ways in which these developments have altered the way journalism is being exercised in the modern world. The study also discusses challenges related to these technologies that are yet to be addressed, as well as potential future implementations related to algorithmic journalism that have the capacity to improve on the foundation of automation in the news industry.

The purpose of this study is twofold: first, to chart the changing landscape of mass communication research in journalism-related studies over the past two decades and, second, to determine the contemporary form and content of the invisible college in the field through its intellectual configuration and structural interaction. A simple citation count is inadequate; the analysis of co-citation networks should be a better indication of the field's effort to build on its theoretical foundation. The findings suggest that there is some sort of theoretical and methodological convergence in contemporary journalism-related studies.

The aims of the research and the results of the hypothesis about constructive journalism serve as the foundation for this section, which is based on a comparison of two reputable newspapers. The study design obtained secondary data by evaluating the stories of Jang and Express and applied a categorization scheme to operationalize constructive journalism frameworks and government development projects. Using this data cross-tabulation, descriptive statistics and chi-square analyses were applied through SPSS. The research shows that Jang is paying more attention to crucial issues in comparison with Express newspaper. Both of these newspapers show features of constructive journalism which include public-oriented, solution-oriented, future-oriented, and action-oriented stories. According to the statistical analyses presented in the previous chapter, it can be observed that both newspapers provide public-focused, solution-oriented, future-oriented, and action-oriented journalism. The main benefit of this study is to highlight the fact that understanding newspapers’ reporting orientation and/or the absence of helpful journalism frameworks is critical to shaping public opinion and perception in Pakistan because the majority of the population uses Urdu news for information.

Constructive journalism as a (news) philosophy and practice is gaining ground around the globe as both new journalistic ventures and legacy news media variously experiment with so-called ‘constructive’ approaches, and specialized (nonprofit) organizations and training programs have been established. While scholarly interest in the subject has steadily grown accordingly, constructive journalism as a research field in its own right is arguably still in need of further development. Therefore, we set out to explore, advance, and shape a research agenda, and to build a theoretical and empirical foundation for constructive journalism, providing a 360° view by bringing together an international body of scholarship approaching the topic and the issues raised through different disciplinary, conceptual, and methodological lenses. As such, we aim, first, to contribute to the conceptual development of constructive journalism by refining its roots in positive psychology and carefully delineating its position along related and divergent types of journalism, identifying its core values and principles, the lineages and digressions. Second, we seek to advance theory building in this nascent research domain based on empirical data and insights variously derived from quantitative and qualitative methodological approaches exploring, describing, and testing through large-scale or in-depth analyses, how constructive journalism can be interpreted and put in practice, how it materializes and with what effect. In doing so, we adopt an overall stance of ‘critical appreciation’ toward the subject, engaging in foundational thinking while not shying away from an assessment of the potential and effective critique or controversy stirred by this proliferating ‘alternative’ branch of journalism.

Founding fathers of the Nigerian press have made tremendous contributions to journalism practice in the country. This paper takes a look at the contributions of two towering founding fathers of the Nigerian press- Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, from historical research perspective, digging into archival materials from media historians and evidences from the duo major publications: Nigerian Tribune and The West African Pilot respectively. The work which is anchored on the gatekeeping concept of the media has put in proper perspective the contributions of two media icons of the mid-twentieth century Nigeria’s journalism for academic and professional scrutiny. Lessons from the professional ups and downs of the probed veteran journalists and their relationship with their audience will, in no small measure, justify the social relevance of the discourse. The study recommends among other things that journalism institutions in the country should identify and teach contributions of the founding fathers of the Nigerian press to enable young journalists have a solid foundation in their profession. The study also recommends among other things that modern day journalists in Nigeria should sustain the fire brand journalism practice of the duo which appears to have gone into extinction.

Over the past decades, the development of the digital system has gradually led to the transformation of the information and communication space and interactive interaction with the audience. As a result, traditional journalism is being replaced by digital journalism with a new communication model. The structure of traditional journalism is undergoing changes under the influence of the introduction of digital technologies. The paper most widely covers the key aspects of the activities of a digital journalist, many of which have not yet been described in academic publications. A new phenomenon is considereddigital journalism, and new role models in the socio-cultural status are studied. The goal is to describe the features of the language means of role models in digital journalism in Kazakhstan. According to the author of the study, the neo-digital environment has enriched the communicative space of journalists, which manifests itself primarily in the deviation from the professional ethical standards of traditional journalism. The study of the features of the language means of the role models of communicants in digital journalism makes it possible to create the prerequisites for the formation of a new formula for virtual communication in the process of covering events. The scientific findings and practical significance of this paper lie in the presentation of new role models in modern digital journalism and their application in the study of media discourse in digital format. In the process of writing the paper, the following methods were used: analysis and review of individual cases in the digital space. Based on the results of individual cases in social networks, the following conclusions were made: role models in the digital environment will continue to change, as the digitalization of media is developing at a rapid pace; given the new trends in the transition of traditional journalism to the digital space, Kazakhstani journalism should adopt the experience of advanced countries in training personnel, namely, master new functions of digitalization; language means of digital journalism must meet the standards of new media and train personnel, taking into account the features of the role models of modern digital journalism; various language means are described on the example of cases of digital communication of journalists and network users, forming public consciousness. The study results can be a theoretical foundation for further research in the field of media and linguistics.

Since the nineteenth century, more kinds of news outlets and ways of presenting news grew along with telegraphic, telephonic, and digital communications, leading journalists, policymakers, and critics to assume that more events became available than ever before. Attentive audiences say in surveys that they feel overloaded with information, and journalists tend to agree. Although news seems to have become more focused on events, several studies analyzing U.S. news content for the past century and a half show that journalists have been including fewer events within their coverage. In newspapers the events in stories declined over the twentieth century, and national newscasts decreased the share of event coverage since 1968 on television and since 1980 on public radio. Mainstream news websites continued the trend through the 2000s. Instead of providing access to more of the “what”, journalists moved from event-centered to meaning-centered news, still claiming to give a factual account in their stories, built on a foundation of American realism. As journalists concentrated on fewer and bigger events to compete, audiences turned away from mainstream news to look for what seems like an abundance of events in digital media.

In the immediate post-25 April scenario, the Portuguese media adopted revolutionary language as the foundation of a journalism oriented towards political-ideological combat and social criticism. This hegemonic discourse derived from a reality characterized by daily changes and conflicts, became itself an instrument of political and social change. The primary goal of this work is to carry out a discourse and content analysis having as objects of study an informative newspaper and another of a propagandistic nature in the biennium 1974–75, based on a sample of words gathered from headlines within these publications. The studied media are the informative Diário de Notícias and the doctrinal weekly Esquerda Socialista. In the context of the transition to democracy in Portugal, we conclude that informative and doctrinal journalism merged within a single body guided by the commitment of journalists to the revolutionary cause.

ABSTRACT
The Germanic languages investigated by Isabel Soares as an undergraduate student gave way to the Anglo-Portuguese studies she developed as a Master’s and PhD candidate. Now a Professor at the Institute of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Lisbon, she is also the author of two books which she calls “pseudofictional”, because they have an “autobiographical foundation”. Her interest on authors connected to the “unconventional journalism” has brought her closer to literary journalism, so much so that, in 2016, she was elected president of the International Association for Literary Journalism Studies (IALJS). She defines herself as Portuguese with German roots. Today, her experience as a researcher, lover of languages, travels and writing contributes to making the studies on Portuguese literary journalism more visible.

Campus journalism serves an important foundation for learning, values development, and discipline. Campus journalism fosters students’ development in various literary, social, and academic aspects. Its culture emphasizes the importance of truthfulness, social transformation, and effective communication not only in school but also in communities. This study aimed to analyze how campus journalism shaped the grammar consciousness and confidence in writing among campus journalists. This study purposively sampled 16 campus journalists to extract their narratives that reflect their consciousness and confidence. Nine (9) of the participants were college students and were former campus journalists in high school while seven (7) were current member of their publication. Narrative analysis indicated that trainings and mentorship in campus journalism developed the writing competencies of campus journalists and helped them expand their linguistic knowledge and literary skills. This mechanism enabled them to be conscious and confident in their language use, most especially in academic setting. However, it was also evident that social pressures in social media delimit them to express their ideas and share their skills to larger community. Social cognitive theory supports this language use anxiety in social media that leads campus journalists to control what they share and express socially. Nevertheless, this study provided a possible perspective for future analysis on how social factors influence the language use of campus journalists. This study highlighted how specific culture to which campus journalists were exposed to can potentially foster or degrade their language confidence.

This study is devoted to Stepan Bandera (1909-1959). S. Bandera is a remarkable person and a leading figure in the Ukrainian liberation movement. He was the leader of OUN (Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists) and wrote many articles dealing with socio-political issues both in Ukraine and among Ukrainian exiles from 1940-1950. His publications and ideological teachings became the foundation for the ongoing development of OUN. The spread of Ukrainian nationalism and its increasing popularity among the people under S. Bandera's leadership became a phenomenon, and the enemies of Ukraine identified the whole liberation movement with his name. S. Bandera included international issues and relations in all his works. This was of the utmost importance to the Ukrainian people and the whole liberation movement because it responded to the negative image of Ukrainian nationalists that the Soviets and their propaganda machine were creating and spreading. Émigré periodicals publishing his works were: «Vyzvolna Polityka» and «Vyzvolnyi Shliakh» (London); «Chas» (Fürth, Germany); «Ukrainskyi Samostiinyk» (Munich, Germany); «Homin Ukrainy» (Toronto, Canada); «Ukrainskyi Visnyk» (New York); «Surma»; and more. S. Bandera's signed articles by different pen names: «Siryi S.A.», «Siryi S.B.», «SAS», «Byilykho», «A. Vlast», and «Tesliar». From the perspective of international relations, it could be seen that S. Bandera's key principles were to establish close cooperation among the representatives of all captive nations and to oppose all totalitarian regimes which were taking hold in Eastern Europe and Asia. It was important to connect with the ethnic minorities living with Ukrainians in and out of Ukraine. The attack on the Bataclan Theatre in Paris in November 2015 arguably targeted a transnational community of youths able to move and convene freely; as such, it was an attack on the liberal and cosmopolitan core of the European project. Cafébabel (cafebabel.com), a multilingual current affairs online magazine co-funded by the European Union, is intricately linked to this project. This article consequently investigates how Cafébabel, in the aftermath of the attack, appropriated the notion of ‘Génération Bataclan’ from a front page of Libération and how this may be seen as a constructive intervention in the relations between terrorism and journalism in Europe. Cafëbabel’s coverage was, it will be argued, linked to efforts to reflect and/or construct a generational and transnational ‘cosmopolitan identity’ within journalistic practices that largely can be called participatory. Following this, the article consequently argues for seeing Cafébabel’s coverage as instances of constructive news as participation in the European project, which is related to how the outlet perceives the news by national legacy media as un-constructive (conflict, scepticism, nationalism, sensationalism, etc.). In analysing a sample of articles from Cafébabel following the Paris attacks, the article consequently employs a theoretical foundation that merges elements from writings applying three distinct concepts, namely, constructive journalism, journalism as practice and cosmopolitanism.

By analysing metajournalism published from 2000 to 2017 by nineteen trade presses (N=379), it attempts to ascertain how the industry defines the term, the tone surrounding it and the practices associated with it. It finds that a non-lexical definition of big data does not exist within the industry; discourse is binary and wildly optimistic or pessimistic; and big data journalism will significantly affect journalistic practices.

In recent years, many authors have observed that something is happening to the truth, pointing out that, particularly in politics and social communication, there are signs that the idea of truth is losing consideration in media discourse. This is no minor issue: Truth, understood as the criterion for the justification of knowledge, is the essential foundation of enlightened rationality. The aim of this article, based on prior research on social communication (especially as regards journalism), is to elucidate an explanation of this phenomenon, known as ‘post-truth.’ Because it is an epistemological question, the three main variables of the problem (reality, subject and truth) have been analysed by taking into account the manner in which digital social communication is transforming our perception of reality. By way of a conclusion, we propose that (a) the ontological complexity of reality as explained by the news media has accentuated the loss of confidence in journalism as a truth-teller, and that (b) truth is being replaced by sincerity, as an epistemological value, in people’s understanding of the news. The result, using Foucault’s concept of Regime of Truth, suggests a deep change in the global framework of political, economic, social and cultural relations, of which post-truth is a symptom.

During the 2010s, Tamaulipas, a border state in northern Mexico, became a “silenced zone” for journalism as a result of the Mexican Drug War. In 2016, during an international theatre festival in the port of Tampico, the Stultifera Navis Institutom collective intervened at the headquarters of what used to be one of the most important journals in the city. The building, located in downtown Tampico, had been abandoned for thirty-three years. For three days, we brought the newspaper “back to life,” using only fake news. This essay recovers the experience of this multidisciplinary site-specific intervention by casting a critical look at its theoretical foundation in Jacques Derrida’s concept of “Hauntology” and Georges Didi-Huberman’s method of “Anachronism.” Engaging deontological debates within media practice and the “virtuality” concept in literature, it analyzes the use of fiction as an act of discursive rebellion. Finally, “spectrality” and Aby Warburg’s notion of “images in history” are problematized with a decolonial perspective, concluding with a reflection on the theatrical character of historical resurgences through an analysis of Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

In search for the truth, both the publicist and the audience -together or separately - cross different levels of a dialogue as it is presented by the “communicative pyramid” as a model of dialogical communication and the formation of the personality.

The article is devoted to the analysis of music reviews as affected by transformation of the genre and its framework in the convergent media environment. The proposed original structure of analysis is developed and reasoned based on the ideas presented in works by Russian and foreign scholars on the specific features of the review as a genre (Ye. A. Nabiyeva, A. A. Tertychnyi, and others), media convergence (H. Jenkins, T. Rogers, and others), interpretation of music images (T. Adorno, Yu. Strakovich, and others), suggestiveness of media texts (A. Beck, D. Burns, J. Baron and others). The analysis structure includes three basic sections: content, environment of publication, communicative tactics; each section is expanded in several criteria grades. The review is considered as an analytical genre that is traditionally based on suggestion as the leading communicative strategy. However, today this genre is transforming intensively in the mutable deinstitutionalized environment of the network mass media. Distortions, which are inevitable in conversion of an artistic image into a text, become especially identifiable in music reviews and increase subjectivity initially typical for this genre. The structure of analysis elaborated in the article engages particularly a classification of heuristics, or cognitive biases, which are considered to be cognitive distortions turning in opinion journalism into the means of expression and suggestion. These means are regarded as the foundation for the genesis of local media myths. The proposed method is tested on the review published at the Colta web portal. In conclusion, the paper emphasizes the significance of the research done for some general issues of communication studies, and in particular notes the method’s applicability to the analysis of inner cognitive triggers a person feels exposed to in the network society.
