Two Nigerian clays were characterized for various industrial applications. Clay samples from Ameke-Item in Uzoakoli and Akara-Isu in Abia North deposits, both in Abia State, Nigeria were used for the study. The clay samples were analyzed using x-ray diffractometer and x-ray florescence to determine their mineralogical and chemical oxide compositions respectively. They were further processed and subjected to physico-mechanical property tests using ASTM standards. The results obtained show that the minerals in Ameke-Item clay are mainly kaoline and quartz while those found in Akara-Isu are kaoli

The suitability of some Nigerian clays as refractory raw materials was investigated. The clay samples were first analysed to determine their chemical compositions. Fireclay bricks test specimens were prepared by standard method. They were then tested for properties such as apparent porosity, bulk density, thermal shock resistance, fired shrinkage, refractoriness and cold crushing strength. The result obtained showed that both test samples qualify as high melting fireclays. The refractory properties measured revealed them as being usable as refractory bricks when blended.

Sodium-based bentonite is used for drilling operations because of its high swelling capacity. This type of bentonite clay is not sourced locally in many oil- and gas-producing nations. However, low-swelling clays (calcium- and potassium-based) are in abundant quantities in most of these countries. Hence, there is a need to convert low-swelling bentonite clays to sodium-based bentonite. The method used to convert low-swelling clays is more applicable to calcium-based bentonite. This paper investigates the use of reduplicated English elements as aspects of Nigerian English usage in the speech events among participants in Calabar, a multilingual city in Southern Nigeria. The study adopts Variationist Sociolinguistics and Sociopragmatic Competence as the theoretical foundations because both account for the occurrence of variation and semantic change resulting from interference from L1 and other factors. As developments in Nigeria have demonstrated, law and the legal order can be manipulated in order to sustain the state and a section of the society at the expense of the general public. This process was imposed on the people of Nigeria under the guise of promoting development. Although development projects have been elaborately supported by the law, the effect on the welfare of the people has been largely negative. Rather than promoting progress, projects have led to the displacement of vast numbers of Nigerians from their familiar habitat. Law and the legal order have been used by the state t

One of the contentious issues affecting national integration in Nigeria is ethnic politics. An ethnicity is a potent tool for mobilizing access to power and resources in Nigeria. It has not only affected nation-building but has also constituted security and governance challenges threatening national integration. Despite different measures adopted to foster national unity among different ethnic groups, primordial sentiments pervade the political system, festering like a malignant tumour with associated prognosis. Fanaticism has brewed into different forms in the Nigerian context – and the gravest is religious fanaticism. It has taken hold of most clans, religions, and ethnic groups across Nigeria. Religion has always existed in Nigerian societies and also has fanaticism but the level of violence precipitated by this fanaticism is apparently unprecedented. This paper journeys into the beginning of religious fanaticism in Nigeria and its changing patterns of violence. It highlights the root causes of religious violence in Nigeria and visible patterns in this violence. The paper adopted structural-functio

However, not only have authoritarian regimes existed in Nigeria for a substantial part of its history but also the successive democratic governments since 1999 have continued to mirror the characteristics of these regimes. Thus, in the article I analyze this paradox by examining the role of multinational corporations in preventing the growth of democracy in Nigeria. Nigeria is a country that is shaken by recurrent socio-economic and political crises, which started right after the implementation of the structural adjustment program since the early 1980s under the military regimes. A number of scholars have argued that religion played a crucial role in the political truce that ushered in the democratic government of former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 1999. This paper analyzes the extent to which Pentecostalism became instrumental to the political and economic development of Nigeria.
