Igbokwe, Gordon. "A study of the Socio-Economic Integration of Highly-Skilled Nigerian Migrants in Cape Town." University of the Western Cape, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/7317.

Full text
Abstract:
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD
Migration is an important topic, not only for researchers in South Africa, but also for policymakers and the media. It is an issue at the top of the national and international agenda. In the debate on migration and the literature, voices of migrants themselves remain mostly unheard. The public perceptions and policy-making are often based on fear, stereotypes and common myths rather than reality. In this study, the researcher aimed to examine the socio-economic integration challenges of highly-skilled Nigerian migrants and how they may help contribute their skills towards the socioeconomic development of South Africa to potentially inform the national migration policy, as well as future research. Methodologically, the researcher conducted a mixed-method study using an interpretive paradigm. Data were derived from 22 semi-structured interviews and six in-depth interviews. The study used a combination of purposive and snowballing sampling techniques, where semi-structured and in-depth interviews, as well as observations, were also carried out. Data gathered were analysed using thematic analysis.

Li, Jie, and 李劼. "New town development in an entrepreneurial city : the case of Shanghai." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/209478.

Full text
Abstract:
The new town programme has been a widely adopted urban development strategy since the post-2000s in large Chinese cities such as Beijing and Shanghai. This study argued that the current trends of new town development in China need to be understood in light of its own political economy and urban contexts, particularly China’s shift to a socialist-market economy, participation in the global economy, and the rise of Chinese entrepreneurial cities. Using two new towns in Shanghai as case studies, this dissertation attempts to interpret Shanghai’s new town development from the perspective of urban entrepreneurialism, and contribute to the understanding of how the new town programme adds on the ‘entrepreneurial city’ nature to Shanghai. This dissertation is essentially a qualitative study based on data from planning and policy documents, media information, field trip observation, and interviews. Employing the concepts relating to the urban entrepreneurialism and entrepreneurial city theory, the development of the two new towns in Shanghai was examined in three domains: entrepreneurial urban policy and planning, entrepreneurial urban development practices and space production, and entrepreneurial governance. The major analytical elements include development objectives and planned functions of new towns, cultural or entertainment oriented mega-projects development, the fostering of cultural and creative industries, the roles of the state and types of state intervention, and financing mechanisms. This study found that the new town programme in Shanghai is an entrepreneurial urban development strategy to facilitate the building of Shanghai into a global city with international competitiveness, by equipping the metropolitan areas with new urban spaces and new growth capacities. Within the domain of entrepreneurial urban policy and planning, a number of policies were identified to promote industrial development and upgrading, and new planning practices were adopted for place promotion. Within the domain of entrepreneurial urban development practices, it is found that cultural or entertainment oriented mega-projects development was widely adopted, with entrepreneurial objectives such as raising land value and attracting affluent residents and consumers. Within the domain of entrepreneurial governance, a pro-growth coalition formed between the local governments and the government affiliated development corporations was found to be the most influential driving force in promoting the new town development, with their landownership, land selling power, and planning power. The new town programme has added on the entrepreneurial city nature to Shanghai by invoking innovative strategies and state-dominated entrepreneurial urban governance. Innovative entrepreneurial strategies were observed in five fields: producing new type of urban space for living, working, consuming, etc.; new methods for space production to creative locational competitiveness; opening new markets by providing attractive places for consumption; finding new sources of supply by land development and attracting human capital; and redefining urban hierarchy by developing regional nodal city and logistics hub. Urban governance in the new towns were found to be state-dominated in which the local governments themselves are entrepreneurs in pursuit of their own economic and political interests, instead of forming partnerships between the state and the market and facilitating private participation in the development process.

Pan, Qiongyu. "The development strategies of high speed railway new towns in China : Wuxi East new town." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2017. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/44446/.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the first high speed railway came into operation in 2008, China has stepped into a new era of rapid development based on efficient transport connections and a strong economic engine. Subsequently, an unprecedented urban extension campaign of ‘High Speed Railway New Town’ emerged and has attracted immense attention. Local governments have demonstrated great ambitions on urban development around high speed rail stations and shown huge enthusiasm for its potential. A great many cities with connection to high speed rail have set up grand plan and design for the so called ‘High Speed Rail New Town’. Although authorities tend to put great confidence in HSR construction and station area development, the process is, in fact, by no means easy. It is a rather tortuous and complicated process, full of fierce debate, conflicts of interest and ambiguous impact. The major objective of this thesis is to investigate the current development strategies of high speed railway new towns in China in relation to their node value and place value, with the ultimate intention to provide guidelines for the rational development process for this new type of urban settlement. A specific case, Wuxi East New Town, as the earliest constructed ‘High Speed Railway New Town’ in China with the fastest development speed at present, was selected and critically explored to show the current development picture and evaluate its strength and weakness. Due to the uniqueness and the initial development stage of ‘High Speed Railway New Town’ in China, comprehensive lessons from international experience in new town development and urban development around high speed railway stations were critically studied. Hence, synthesising existing literature and knowledge related to China's HSR New Town and relating this to international experience is an important and original contribution to the research.

Taylor, Jessica. "Cumbernauld : the conception, development and realisation of a post-war British New Town." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/8226.

Full text
Abstract:
The focus of this thesis is Cumbernauld New Town, designated in 1955, and widely considered revolutionary in concept and built form, both by many contemporary architectural/planning commentators and by subsequent historians. It was hailed by its advocates as the first significant built response to the widespread criticisms of early post-war town planning, within early 1950s architectural debates in Britain: the first new towns, especially, had been branded monotonous, low-density housing estates with monofunctional centres, and Cumbernauld would rectify these faults with a dynamic, densely mixed new formula. The thesis examines the development of Cumbernauld from designation in 1955 to the late 1970s, when the final form of the town was settled. Through in-depth research into primary sources, extensive interviews and a comprehensive field-survey of the entire original new town, it assesses whether the picture of a sharp rupture within post-war UK modernism, with Cumbernauld in the vanguard of change, might be simplified or misleading. It concludes that the concept and realisation of Cumbernauld was indeed an incremental development of, rather than revolutionary rupture from, the patterns of its predecessors, and that it drew heavily on a range of mainstream contemporary architecture and planning influences of the late 1950s and 1960s.

An innovative suburban commercial development strategy is gaining momentum in the 1990s. Its prototype may be called the new Main Street/Town Center (MS/TC). The model reacts to complex economic and social circumstances using a public-space anchored design approach. A major motivation for the trend is the unquantified, but recognizably growing demand for a greater sense of community. This demand may be captured at a profit using a creative development approach, which also appears to generate external environmental and sociological benefits at the margin. Retail industry restructuring is one event triggering the MS/TC's insurgence. Residential uses are found to be a vital addition to commercial ones. This thesis poses the following questions: What are the circumstances in which a public space-anchored, or street-making, approach is successful in suburban commercial development? As a developer, how would one employ this prototype to capitalize on the applicable market and design circumstances? And, what is the outlook for a public space/street-anchored type of commercial development? Three case studies -- Downtown Park Forest, IL; Mizner Park, in Boca Raton, FL; and Redmond Town Center in Redmond, WA -- highlight both the constancy and the diversity of the model. MS/TC projects comprise both redevelopment and new development, and are spearheaded by public, public/private, and private development entities. The new Main Street/Town Center model, which employs mixed uses and varies in scale, is unusual for contemporary suburban development in that it seeks to fortify, or reintegrate, a street network to serve multilateral needs. This audience encompasses autos and pedestrians and sometimes natural ecosystems but does not require connection to mass transit. A comprehensive set of site planning solutions has evolved to address needs of multiple components. There is no singular market context in which the a new Main Street/Town Center model will succeed, but a creative, tailored approach is necessary to optimize financial and social potential.

Schenk, Jan-Christof. "The making of a new South African craft : township craft and development discourse in post-apartheid Cape Town." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/14635.

Full text
Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 90-93).
The author discusses postdevelopment theory by exploring unintentional effects of development practices in Cape Town's craft scene. A heterodox research design is adopted, drawing on Pierre Bourdieu's ideas on cultural production, notions of authenticity, representation and the modern/traditional dichotomy as well as thoughts on the making of a New South African identity. This is applied to the dynamics of Cape Town's craft scene in the pursuit of answering four research questions: (i) What role does the township play in the image of post-apartheid South Africa? (ii) How does development discourse contribute to the re-imagining of post-apartheid South Africa through 'township craft'? (iii) Is development discourse conducive to maintaining and creating tensions between centres and peripheries in the New South Africa? (iv) To what extent can a heterodox research design contribute to the postdevelopment debate? Through the socio-semiotic analysis of qualitative data obtained from interviews with fourteen stakeholders in Cape Town's craft scene as well as observations made at sites, where 'township craft' is presented and/or produced, the author is able to give three main insights in relation to the stated questions: (i) The image of the township, represented through cultural commodities, plays a crucial role as a place of creativity and positive change in the making of a post-apartheid identity. (ii) Development discourse manifests itself in the making of a New South African identity through material culture in the form of 'township craft' and its conceptual as well as spatial contexts. (iii) The use of development discourse in the making and marketing of 'township craft' in combination with supposedly 'common knowledge' about the art/craft divide has the potential to create and maintain patterns of inequality between producers and sellers of 'township craft'. A recommendation is made to explore further possibilities of heterodox research designs for studies using a postdevelopment theoretical framework.
