Abstract:
This is a collection of short stories that traces a chronological movement through one family's experience of the mother's illness. Each piece in the collection is meant to be an independent, free-standing short story. Each story is different, told from distinctive points-of-view, angles, and voices. However, every story covers a span of time within the nine months of the family's experience, in the presented order, as part of a collective movement toward the core. All together, the pieces hope to reflect a mosaic of sorts--one that tells a story that cannot otherwise be told.

Shelite, Thomas R. "West Nile virus and wild bird populations." Thesis, Wichita State University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10057/391.

Full text
Abstract:
West Nile Virus (WNV) first appeared in the western hemisphere in 1999, and has since spread across the United States and into Mexico and the Caribbean. It has been hypothesized that WNV has spread rapidly via migratory birds, and that various avian species may facilitate viral amplification during winter months. The goals of this research were to determine the role of American Tree Sparrows (Spizella americana) in the spread of WNV during their igrations and to determine the role of the Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) in winter survivorship and subsequent spring amplification of WNV. Additional wintering avian species were sampled to provide a general survey of the prevalence of WNV in winter in south-central Kansas. Blood samples were taken from the brachial vein of migratory and wintering birds captured using mist nets at four wintering feeding stations at the Wichita State University Field Station. Some samples were taken from retrapped birds within a single winter to determine if winter transmission occurs. Some birds were resampled in consecutive winters to monitor seroconversion rates. Analysis of serum samples were performed, in triplicate, using an epitope-blocking ELISA. The current study was conducted during the consecutive winters of 2003-04 and 2004-05. It was concluded that resident species had an increased incidence of WNV exposure when compared to that of migratory species. This difference suggests that migratory species may not have as important a role in the dissemination of WNV as first hypothesized. Also, minimal, if any, winter transmission occurs on communal feeding grounds. Viral amplification during the winter was not demonstrated, although one individual seroconverted during a single winter.

Merrill, John C. "Water Management and Decision-Making in the Nile Basin: A Case Study of the Nile Basin Initiative." Scholar Commons, 2008. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/402.

Full text
Abstract:
The management of international waterways presents riparian nations with a challenging set of political, economic, environmental, and geographic difficulties. Historically, the Nile Basin has exemplified many of these problems as witnessed by inter-basin conflict, devastating floods, crippling drought, and unstable political and economic development. Despite their tumultuous past the ten riparian nations of the Nile Basin established a supranational water management institution in 1999, the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI), in order to develop collective solutions to their common water related problems. However, serious challenges to the cooperative process threaten to derail the NBI and enflame underlying causes of conflict. This thesis seeks to determine how the NBI has affected water related decision making in the Nile Basin. This will be achieved by examining patterns of decision-making before and after the establishment of the NBI. Specifically, the impact of the NBI will be tested by examining patterns of decision-making within three measures of conflict, namely the allocation of water resources, the sharing of technical data and expertise, and the financing of water related projects and programs.

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to present a reading of the short stories collected in the book Nine Stories, first published in 1953 by the North American writer J. D. Salinger (1919-2010). In order to guide our discussion, we take arguments that appeared in a critical debate between Richard and Carol Ohmann, on one side, and James E. Miller, on the other, during the 1970s. Due to the acritics different interpretative methods and incompatible assumptions, the debate end up revealing an ambiguity central to Salinger\'s work, whose stories oscillate between the critical observation of society and the celebration of a special sensibility present in some characters. We show that both terms bear relation with the historical matter from the period and with the immediate context that formed the United States during the middle of the 20th century, specifically with problems of dissent and personal revolt in members of an affluent middle class from the East Coast. We hope this work will shed light on important issues concerning the narrative genre, such as the relationship between plot and narrator, since this is fundamental in understanding the comings and goings of Salinger\'s fiction, the way in which sometimes contradictory values can be present in the text, and how the character\'s actions might conflict with the way in which they are mediated by unreliable narrators.

Abstract:
Through using a Positive Youth Development framework and culturally based education program, Konaway Nikka Tillicum Native American Youth Academy aspires to mentor and prepare Native youth through high school and on to higher education. This collaborative research partnership investigated cultural identity, self-esteem, and academic optimism of Native American youth attending the academy. The results of this program evaluation found that cultural identity, self-esteem, and academic optimism were all closely related to each other as well as that they increased significantly when measured before and after the academy. GPA was found to not be predictive of cultural identity, self-esteem, or academic optimism prior to students attending the academy. Lastly, the relationship between cultural identity and academic optimism appeared to be explained through the indirect effect of self-esteem. The results suggest that culturally based education and positive youth development programs such as Konaway are efficacious in increasing protective factors among Native American youth.

Abstract:

Although the British and the Americans use the same language, i.e. English, the differences in vocabulary, pronunciation, and spelling between these two varieties doubtlessly exist. However, this paper deals particularly with the spelling differences between British English and American English since spelling seems to cause confusion and problems to the learners of English the most. The American spelling is considered to be informal; therefore, the essay focuses on the standard British English spelling of words through, night, light, and high and their equivalents in American English, i.e. thru, nite, lite, and hi. This study investigates how extensively the British and the Americans use the standard and the informal spelling of these words in different written sources such as newspapers, magazines, leaflets and advertisements, and books. In addition, the collocations of these particular words are investigated. In order to do this quantitative research, the Collins Cobuild corpus material was searched and analyzed. The results of this study reveal that the informal American spelling of these four words appears in British texts more often than in American texts. However, the informal spelling tends to appear in non-American sources when speaking about America or American cultural phenomena.

Sy, Madeline. "A Riddle in Nine Syllables: The Maternal Body in Sylvia Plath's Maternity Poems." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2018. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/1103.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis endeavors to intervene in the manner Plath’s maternity poems have been discussed by examining the psychological negotiations of identity that occurred while the speaker’s in Plath’s poems are pregnant with child. The method of this thesis is also a departure from the historicized criticism and interpretations of Plath’s poems that often conflate the experience of the speaker with the details of Plath’s life. This analysis will focus on the poems “Metaphors,” “You’re” and “Nick and the Candlestick” which feature subtle imagery that not only illustrate the speaker’s preoccupation with her own pregnancy but also constructs a metaphorical representation of the maternal body as the locus for the mother’s negotiation of identity. The different forms that the maternal body is represented through, from inanimate objects to a cavernous opening, allow the speaker to fully explore a broad gamut of emotions related to motherhood. The enlargement and reduction of the maternal body, the use of relational language and local instances of transformation are all motifs and conventions that the speakers in Plath’s poems use to navigate the shifting terrain of individual identity during and after maternity. In examining the more abstract poems related to maternity that depict the maternal body through metaphor, this article endeavors to explore the disparate sensations and experiences conveyed in Plath’s poetry.

Beyeler, Patrick Marcel. "Protein requirements of juvenile Nile crocodiles (Crocodylus niloticus) in an intensive production system." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/29554.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this study was to determine the dietary protein requirements of the Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) between the ages of 5 – 8 months, and to compare the results with documented protein requirements of the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis). This was achieved by feeding the crocodiles 4 diets with varying amounts of crude protein (CP), including 62%, 56.6%, 51.6% and 46%. All four diets were iso-energetic with a metabolisable energy to protein ratio of 25.85KJ/g. The highest protein diet contained 44% raw minced chicken and 46.9% fish meal with minimal contribution (of 6.4%) made from vegetable protein sources (full fat soya). The lowest protein diet was made up of a majority of vegetable protein (30% soya bean oilcake, 9.8% full fat soya and 17.2% maize meal) and some contribution from protein of animal origin (4.3% carcass meal and 35% fish meal). This study was carried out for 12 weeks during the crocodiles first year of life. Body mass, total body length, head length and snout to vent length were measured five times at 3 weekly intervals. Twenty representative crocodiles in a pen of 200 were individually tagged for the duration of the trial. As there were 3 replicates for each of the 4 treatment diets, 240 crocodiles in 12 pens were tagged. During the early phase of the study, it was observed that crocodiles on the 46% CP treatment diet were not performing well, and that most of the crocodiles on this diet were losing mass. This treatment diet was discontinued at 9 weeks into the trial for both financial and ethical reasons. The remaining three diets were tested for the full 12 weeks. Chromium oxide was mixed into the diets at two time periods during the trial to determine the protein, energy and dry matter digestibility. It was determined that the 46%, the 51.6%, the 56.6% and the 62% CP diets had a digestible protein (DP) content of 246.44 g/kg, 294.80 g/kg, 381.32 g/kg and 468.65 g/kg and a digestibility coefficient of 53.50%, 57.00%, 69.15% and 75.65% respectively. Performance of crocodiles on the 46% CP treatment diet was found to be lower in all measurement categories than crocodiles on the three higher protein diets. However, crocodiles on the 62% CP treatment diet outperformed all the crocodiles (on all measurement criteria) on the lower protein diets. The poor performance of crocodiles on the lowest protein diet correlates with previous research indicating that crocodilians are unable to perform optimally when the majority of the diet’s protein is made up of vegetable protein sources. It was determined that juvenile American alligators would grow at optimal levels when the diet contained a DP content of 450 g/kg. As the Nile crocodiles in this study performed the best when the diet contained a DP value of 468.65 g/kg, it was concluded that juvenile Nile crocodiles have the same range of protein requirements as that determined for juvenile American alligators.

Abstract:
Christine Jorgensen is the first known American citizen undergo sexual reassignment surgery. After her medical operations in Denmark in 1952, during which George Jorgensen Jr., a twenty-six year old man from the Bronx, New York, became Christine Jorgensen, an attractive, feminine woman, Jorgensen returned home to face the curiosity and scrutiny of the American public. As the “first celebrity transsexual," Jorgensen sparked public controversy by questioning the gender expectations that structured society in mid-twentieth century America. Jorgensen’s gender presentation closely aligned to the idealized standards of womanhood reinforced by institutional forces during the 1950s. Due to the amount of public scrutiny she faced after her transition, Jorgensen had to conform to these expectations entirely in order to achieve social acceptance. Examining Jorgensen’s gender expression critically exposes the social limits for expression of gender as well as what forces were responsible for placing these limits on women.

Brand, Kelly. "Geographies of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis Peoples in a Contemporary Grade-nine Applied-level Ontario Geography Textbook." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/28797.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the representations of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis geographies within a contemporary grade-nine Canadian geography textbook. Although First Nations, Inuit, and Metis peoples have lived on the territory now known as Canada for thousands of years, in the past two hundred years, with the exception of some place names, colonialism has worked to largely remove evidence of their presence from the landscape and to exclude them from the dominant narratives of Canadian geography. In this study, I conduct a critical discourse analysis of a textbook currently approved by the Ontario Ministry of Education's Trillium List for the compulsory grade-nine applied-level Canadian geography course: Canadian Geography: A Sense of Place. First, I consider how the textbook creates knowledge of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis peoples and their geographies. Next, I examine how this creation compares to the textbook's representation of Canadians. Finally, I explore what an Aboriginal geography might look like and how Aboriginal perspectives could be incorporated into the text. The grade-nine Canadian geography course is the only mandatory geography course for students in the applied stream. If students do not continue with geography, the text they use in this course or used by the teacher to organize this course will be their last exposure to geography texts and formal discussions of Aboriginal geographies. This textbook is important because for many students, it will be the only time in their lives that they are systematically exposed to knowledge about First Nations, Inuit, and Metis peoples. While there are attempts at inclusion, old misrepresentations appear again in new forms within this textbook. A major task of this textbook is constructing the nation and presenting a nationalized geography.

Kurz, Kathleen Ann. "A content analysis of the democratic race for 1984 presidential nomination in nine selected Indiana newspapers." Virtual Press, 1985. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/421947.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a content analysis designed to determine whether Democratic presidential candidates Gary Hart, Walter Mondale, and Jesse Jackson received equal coverage in nine selected Indiana newspapers during the month prior to the state primary in 1984. The researcher expected the candidates would receive equal coverage in Democratic, Republican, and Independent newspapers based on the findings of previous similar studies. The study was conducted using three content analysis techniques--space measurement, headline value classification, and evaluative assertion analysis. Nine papers, three from each political group, were selected at random for the study. The data collected was comprised only of news stories. In assessing whether the three candidates received equal coverage, each story relating to one or more of these men was measured using a basic space unit measurement. The amount of space received by the individual candidates in each newspaper group was converted to percentages and chi-square goodness of fit and contingency table tests were applied. Separate totals were maintained throughout for stories about individual candidates and summary stories that were about all three. Headlines concerning each candidate were accorded points based on size and placement. The resulting totals also were subjected to chi-square analysis. The evaluative assertion analysis was. conducted only on news stories that were locally generated. Two sets of coders transcribed assertions and analyzed each for the following: attitude expressed (positive or negative); strength of verbs; and associative or disassociative nature of verbs. The study showed that while the candidates were treated highly similarly by newspapers in the three groups--Hart received the highest percentage of coverage and Jackson the lowest in each case--they were not treated equally. In the individual news stories, Jackson was given significantly less coverage than the others, except in the case of Republican papers in which there was no difference. The headlines followed the same pattern. In the summary stories, there was no significant difference in the coverage received by the three, but for the headlines, Jackson again received significantly less exposure. This was most evident in the Democratic papers. These findings strongly indicate that there was bias in the nine papers in favor of Hart and Mondale and against Jackson. In the evaluative assertion analysis, the coded results all fell into a single category--most of the verbs used were strong and associative and most of the attitudes expressed were positive. This may be more indicative of the writing styles of reporters than of an editorial preference being evidenced by the newspapers.

Abstract:
In the nineteenth century Latin American painters were going to Europe in search of artistic perfection. Paris as the centre of modern art was one of the main destinations for intercontinental artistic migration. The artists from Latin American countries went to Paris to study in famous art schools and to participate in the Salon in order to prove their professional status and to begin their careers in the international arena. Many of them stayed in Europe, but they were usually ignored by French criticism and later, by modernist historiographies. These painters were pushed back to the periphery to which they belonged regardless of their geographical choices. The dissertation explores the trajectories of Latin American painters in Paris who participated in the Salons of the Société Nationale des Beaux-arts from 1890 to 1899 and revisits their position in the modern canon. The research starts with the general overview of the art system on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean and goes from the investigation of artists’ places in national historiographies to the interpretation of their paintings. The multiple factors that shape the reception of the art from periphery are brought to light in order to see the painters erased from history and to find the ways to resist the domination of the master narrative in art history

Full text
Abstract:
This study examined the effects of genetic background on the acoustic startle response (ASR) and its modulation by prepulse inhibition (PPI) by comparing nine inbred strains of mice. The ASR, a jerk-like motor reflex, is elicited by bursts of noise or tones with sound pressure levels of 80-90 dB and greater. PPI is a type of modulation of the ASR, requires no training, and results in observable response in both mice and humans. Data were obtained from nine inbred mouse strains, sixteen per strain, which were shipped at approximately 3-5 weeks old from The Jackson Laboratory. In general, ASRs were generally smaller when the startle stimulus was less intense. PPI was relatively weak for the 4 kHz prepulse, and stronger with prepulses of 12 kHz and 20 kHz. However, means varied widely across strains for both ASR and PPI, suggesting a strong influence of genetic background on these behaviors. In addition to genetic influences, peripheral hearing loss and central auditory processing factors must be taken into consideration.

Abstract:
Through exploring the use of documentary style in a selection of contemporary American comedy series, this thesis closes in on the question whether texts that stylistically differ from traditional sitcom can still be regarded as part of the sitcom genre. The contemporary American TV series that are being analyzed are The Office, Arrested Development, Modern Family, Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Michael J. Fox Show. As the series’ place within sitcom becomes apparent, the analysis ultimately leads to a critical investigation of the term “comedy verite.” Questioning the concepts applicability for the American series and their development leads to the investigation of new definitions. This analysis of contemporary televisual styles reveals a myriad of deeper issues and elucidates how stylistic developments point towards broader developments of the TV medium – towards a medium more and more defined by, or even drenched in, “reality.”

Abstract:
It is commonly known that aquaculture needs to increase further its net contribution to the total world fish supplies. However, at present almost all farming operations, based on the use of fish feed, are highly dependent on available fishery resources for the production of fish meal, becoming a reducing activity rather than an activity suppling fishery resources. If the aquaculture growth potential is to be maintained, then considerable quantities of nutrient inputs in the form of aquafeeds will have to be available on a sustainable basis. On a long-term the small producers will be unable to depend on commercial aquafeeds based traditionally on fish meal, due to its increased price. Small-scale farmers need an alternative fish feed wherever possible based on the use of non-food grade locally feed resources, which is available in rural areas, is low-cost and is suitable for the proper growth and maintenance of native fish. Aquatic plants are considered important nutritional sources for herbivorous-omnivorous fish. However, the use of plant-derived materials as fish feed ingredient is limited by the presence of wide variety of antinutrients that affect the normal fish growth negatively; so that plants should be processed to reduce the effects of these compounds. Considering these aspects, this study assessed the nutritional potential of aquatic plants available in rural Colombia treated by sun drying and by fermentation and the effect of their use as fish feed on the growth performance of common cultured tropical fish (Piaractus brachypomus and Oreochromis niloticus) fed low fishmeal diets (3%) and until 25% of aquatic plants. The results of this study showed that a feeding exclusively based on aquatic plants is not recommendable; but to combine them with other locally available by-products of agriculture or even with commercial diets might considerably reduce feeding cost and provide to the small-scale farmers the opportunity to compete in local markets.

Abstract:
This thesis examines American Far Eastern policy from the beginning of the Franklin Roosevelt presidency through the early months of 1938. This study is chiefly concerned with the attack by Japanese aircraft on the USS Panay and its effect on the course of U.S. foreign policy. Particular attention is paid to the Anglo-American dialogue which occurred throughout the Far Eastern Crisis. Prior to the end of 1938, the U.S. administration’s position in Asia was dictated both by policies inherited from preceding administrations and by the extreme isolationism of the American people. This foundation effectively inhibited any cooperation with foreign powers. Relying on a reactive policy in the Far East, Washington remained aloof from entanglement as the President sought a plan which would permit U.S. involvement without inviting isolationist wrath. This paper traces an evolution in American Far Eastern policy, highlighting the Panay incident as a distinctly identifiable turning point whereby isolationism gave way to internationalism.

Abstract:
What would happen to the Sporting Goods Industry if the largest sportswear manufacturer in Europe and second largest in the world decided to buy one of the fastest growing companies, with a very strong presence in the USA? The aim for this dissertation is to correctly evaluate the pricing for both Adidas AG and Under Armour, Inc., in a deal that would strengthen the German company. The objective is simple: dominate the largest market in the world, North America, and dethrone the giant Nike. This dissertation will center on valuing both companies, with a focus on the combined synergies resulting from the merger. For that, I computed three valuation methods: Discounted Cash-Flow (DCF), Adjusted Present Value (APV), and Relative Valuation (Multiples). I will also provide an industry and company overview, in order to extract the main conclusions, and its impact on a worldwide level. In the end, my recommendation is that Adidas acquires Under Armour with a premium of 34% over each share class, as follows: Class A valued at €17,97, Class C valued at €15,62 and Class B, not publicly traded, at €39,12. This will result in a total value of €8.139 million, €2.067 million over the Market Capitalization.
O objetive é simples: dominar o maior mercado do mundo, a América do Norte, e destronar a gigante Nike.

Coblyn, Michael E. "Social mirroring: Nine African-American artists reflect on their origins through in-depth interviews." 1997. https://scholarworks.umass.edu/dissertations/AAI9721438.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of my study is to investigate, through in-depth phenomenological interviews, the methods or strategies African American artists have employed to either: (1) survive in a Eurocentrically biased art world; (2) combat a Eurocentrically biased art world; or (3) challenge or change a Eurocentrically biased art world. The methods these artists use to survive, combat, or attempt to change the art establishment affects what we see as observers of the artist's visual expressions. The same methods also give us clues to how African American artists survive in contemporary society. The nine artist participants were Lois Mailou Jones, Calvin Burnett, Richard Yarde, Kofi Kayiga, Cheryl Warrick, Nelson Stevens, Paul Goodnight, Michael Borders, Shirley Whitaker. Each interview was conducted in three parts, with each session lasting at least 90 minutes. Part I focused on the past experiences of the participants. This could involve childhood experiences as well as those relating to their artistic training. Part II concentrated on present experiences, what is it like to be an African American artist in the northeastern United States in the 1990s. Also, how these artists go about finding exhibition opportunities, how their work has been received, and in their opinion why. Part III centered on meaning, what the participant's experiences as an African American artist, communicator, and individual mean to them. The interviews were audio tape-recorded and later transcribed and analyzed. It is the written transcript that formed the foundation of the participants' profiles. The artist profiles have made it clear that these artists do indeed reflect a microcosm of African American society, with all its biases, dreams and aspirations. The study has reaffirmed that a given racial group can have a common goal, but the means to achieve that goal can be viewed with all the variations of hues that make up the African American community. When the concept is understood, that we are all individuals, categorization by race or sex seems quite an inadequate means for understanding who African American artists are as people or as image makers. These artists are a mirror of society in general, and their art is a catalyst for the discussion of larger issues that affect the entire African American community.

After U.S. was attacked by terrorist on 11 September 2001, U.S. national security policy was faced significant challenge. It’s also broken the faith that U.S. homeland will not be attacked. Therefore, U.S. must adjust the National Security Strategy to adapt the international situation change if they try to avoid the threat and attack from the terrorism. On the principle of "Bush doctrine", U.S. insists "unilateralism" foreign policy and maintains "pre-emptive strike" power. After the Obama administration tookoffice in 2008, anti-terrorism will become U.S. priority issue of global security while they implement a number of important meetings and the National Security Strategy report. Smyth, Clint R., and Philip Dearden. "An ecological audit of the regulatory requirements for surface coal mine reclamation in nine western North American jurisdictions." 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/10804.

Full text
Abstract:
The role of regulatory requirements and their impact on the design and implementation of high elevation coal mine reclamation programs was examined in nine mountainous western North American jurisdictions. This 'ecological audit' of regulatory requirements revealed that several jurisdictions are similar programatically in objectives but dissimilar substantively in regulatory provisions such as topographic modifications, revegetation, performance standards and enforcement. Information acquisition and dissemination also varied between jurisdictions. The current command-penalty model of environmental regulation results in adversarial interactions between government and industry in many of the jurisdictions and should be replaced by a formal negotiated system of regulation based on continuing research and adaptive management.

Doctoral thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.14/19359.

Full text
Abstract:
The present research started with the following query: What types of representation of Africa have travel books published between the second half of the twentieth century and the early twenty-first century conveyed? Therefore, we have conceived a history of the various types of journey that took place mainly between the mid-eighteenth century and the late nineteenth century, whose narratives are focused on exploration trips to the four major African rivers that connect the ocean to the core of Africa, which set up a stabilized model of representation till the beginning of the independence of African countries during the post-war. We have then searched for travel literature works by European writers and a North-American author, whose paths and narratives are marked by these four rivers in a historic time and with different goals. We aimed at making a history of the representation of Africa across geographies and universal stories by Western authors from countries with a colonial tradition. We ended up coming across various plans of overlapping representations and found out the coincidence of narratives about Africa and the similarities in representations, although the works of four authors - Ébano, by Ryszard Kapuscinski, Aventures en Africa, by Gianni Celati, Baía dos Tigres, by Pedro Rosa Mendes and Viagem por África, by Paul Theroux - depict similarities and differences arising from the time they were written and their specific subjectivities. In order to complete this investigation, we decided to discuss how the biography, the political and ideological commitment and the expectations of each author are intertwined and liaise as elements that shape the values encapsulated in the narratives. For this reason, this research is presented in the subject area of cultural studies. Lastly, the author of the research accepts that his point of view, from the choice of the topic to the selection of case studies concerning European and American authors, is not neutral, although sometimes he has felt almost a ‘subaltern’, a place often occupied during the research.
