Abstract:
Abstract The German words in the title are taken from the first German translation of the Swedish children’s book Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige (Nils Holgersson’s wonderful journey throughout Sweden, Lagerlöf 1906-1907). In this translation Nils is said to land in Germany, which is never the case in the Swedish original. Presumably, the German translator Klaiber added this extra visit to oblige the German readers with a visit of Nils to their own country. Looking at some of the German versions of Nils Holgersson, this article addresses the influence of extratextual factors, i.e., different kind of norms, on the translating and rewriting process.

Abstract:
Abstract Resulting from the wish to meet the (new, altered) requirements of the receiving culture, retranslations are exponents of the historical relativity of translation. According to the so-called retranslation hypothesis, retranslations tend to be more source culture oriented than first translations. First translations, the hypothesis runs, deviate from the original to a higher degree than subsequent, more recent translations, because first translations determine whether or not a text (and its author) is (are) going to be accepted in the target culture. One can come up with several factors that make the retranslation hypothesis, even broadened to re-rewriting hypothesis, plausible (e.g., translators take a critical stance to earlier translations, the target language has developed and target culture norms have become less rigid), but one can ask to what extent the hypothesis is supported by empirical evidence. In the following article some of the results of my study of 52 German and 18 Dutch versions of the children’s classic book Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige (Nils Holgersson’s Wonderful Journey Through Sweden, Selma Lagerlöf, 1906-1907), published between 1907-1908 and 1999, are discussed with respect to the retranslation hypothesis. It is argued that, though some more recent versions showed consideration for the original, a clash of norms ultimately did not allow the hypothesis to hold good: not allegiance to the original, but literary, pedagogical and economical norms gained the upper hand. The hypothesis clearly does not have a general value. The hypothesis may be valid to some extent, but only if it is not formulated in absolute terms. Within peripheral forms of literature, like children’s literature, as well as within classical literature, less prototypical (re)rewriting has proven to be more than the exception and target norms continue to clash with fidelity to the original source text.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Selma Lagerlöf's story about Nils Holgersson, The wonderful Adventures of Nils (1906-1907), is unique in several different ways. It was innovative for its time and it was the first school book written as a story, which makes it an interesting foundation to build an essay upon. The essay examines Selma Lagerlöf's novel about Nils Holgersson compared to Dirk Regel's film adaptation (2011). Both the novel and the film are divided into two parts and only the first part of the book is compared to the first part of the film. Adaptations are common in today's society, a common type of adaptation is when a novel transform into a film but it can also be when a poem becomes music or a play turns into a film. The essay discusses what happens when a medium is transformed into another medium. The essay also has a pedagogical perspective and asks what happens when a didactic school book is adapted into a film. The view on children in Lagerlöf's time is discussed in relation to the view on children that prevails in today's society. When it comes to characters, I’m interested in seeing how Nils Holgersson is portrayed in the book versus in the film. The method used is Linda Hutcheon's and Siobhan O'Flynn’s adaptation analysis which focuses is on various factors that affect an adaptation. Regarding theory, I will use both Thomas Leitch’s adaptation theory and Maria Nikolajeva's children's literature theory. The results show that Lagerlöf's Nils Holgersson is a character who has few qualities. In the beginning he is bad and at the end of the story he becomes good, he develops through the story and is thus a flat but dynamic character. In Regel's version, Nils Holgersson is a complex character from beginning to end and he does not develop, he is thus a round but static character. The didactic perspective it is not as prevalent in the film compared to the book, but some episodes can be understood as having an educational message, which I interpret as a reference to the source medium.

Abstract:

(Nils Holgerssons Underbara Resa Genom Sverige) is a famous fairy tale written by the Nobelist, Selma Lagerlöf. Its versions have been published over forty countries since its first edition in 1906. This thesis analyzes the reasons why it can enjoy an enormous reputation and the factors that it attracts children. The purpose of this thesis is to have people emphasis on (Nils Holgerssons Underbara Resa Genom Sverige), and to introduce the artistic technique of Selma Lagerlöf to become the model of writers. This thesis tries to analyze (Nils Holgerssons Underbara Resa Genom Sverige) from the perspectives of myth, because Selma Lagerlöf is an expert in creating myths. The adventure of home/away/home in which characters of this book experienced is coincident with The Adventure of The Hero, created by Joseph Campbell. So I adopt the Theory of Hero of Campbell’s to explain how Lagerlöf create those two heroes in this book. Through the adventure of hero, I also found that one could become a hero, if he can face the aspiration and anxiety of his life. That’s why Lagerlöf uses “Aspiration” and “Anxiety” to attract the inner imagination and curiosity of readers. Seducing by these two emotions, the little readers fall into fairy tale created by Lagerlöf and start their adventures with the characters. This thesis also adopts Text Analytic method to analyze the artistic technique of (Nils Holgerssons Underbara Resa Genom Sverige) and find out (The Jungle Book & The Second Jungle Book) did influence Lagerlöf. I also choose the Compared to Analytic Method to analyze the difference of these two books, and point out where (Nils Holgerssons Underbara Resa Genom Sverige) exceed (The Jungle Book & The Second Jungle). Through exploring (Nils Holgerssons Underbara Resa Genom Sverige), I take the search of the Ecology Children’s Literature in our native place, and propose five opinions at the end. Key words﹕Ecology Children’s Literature、Gypsy Complex、The Attraction of Aspiration and Anxiety

Abstract:
M.A.

Abstract:
This paper maps the development of translation methods applied in Czech translations of literature for children in the 20th and 21st century. The analysis is focused on solutions in translating proper names in five translations of Selma Lagerlöf's Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige into Czech. The onomastic systems in the source and target texts are analysed with respect to the two levels of this literary work - aesthetic and informative. Following the analysis, conclusions are drawn regarding assumed translation methods which are seen as exponents of translation norms governing the process of translation in various periods of the Czech culture.
