Abstract:
The bacterial communities at two sulfidic, low salinity springs with no history of herbicide contamination were screened for their ability to grow on 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). Nineteen isolates, closely matching the genera Bacillus, Halobacillus, Halomonas, Georgenia and Kocuria, showed diverse growth strategies on NaCl-supplemented and NaCl-free 2,4-D medium. The majority of isolates were halotolerant, growing best on nutrient rich broth with 0% or 5% NaCl; none of the isolates thrived in medium with 20% NaCl. A study was performed in a rural Mexican community and in Mexico City to investigate possible differences in non-starch polysaccharide (NSP) intakes. One hundred and fourteen women (fifty-five rural and fitty-nine urban) and forty-three men (twenty-four rural and nineteen urban) completed 24 h recall questionnaires for three consecutive days with NSP intakes being estimated from a specially prepared set of new food composition tables. Potential underestimation of intakes was assessed by estimating individual BMR and dividing the estimated energy intakes by BMR to give a ratio. Excluding severe

Abstract Short gastric vessel division (SGVD) has been performed as a part of fundoplication for achalasia. However, whether or not SGVD is necessary is still unknown. Forty-six patients with achalasia who underwent a laparoscopic surgery with or without SGVD were analyzed. A questionnaire was administered to assess the postoperative improvement. Regarding improvement of dysphagia and postoperative reflux, there were no significant differences between SGVD (+) group and SGVD (−) group (P = 0.588 and P = 0.686, respectively). In the first half of the nineteenth century, American astronomical observatories were instruments for the personal exploration of the planets and the stars as well as monuments of civic development. Their value was often more symbolic than scientific and they represented significant expenditures for the individuals and communities that undertook them. Their costs were equivalent, in modern terms, to small robotic NASA probes. The cost of these facilities grew in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with the Lick, Mount Wilson, and Mount Palomar Observatories representing major, b
