Abstract:
Centaurea Linnaeus (1753: 909) (Asteraceae) comprises a large number of taxa mainly occurring in the Mediterranean region and southwest Asia (Susanna & Garcia-Jacas 2007). The former wide concept of Centaurea resulted in a polyphyletic assemblage, and it has been recently split into several putatively monophyletic genera Centaurea, Psephellus Cass. and Rhaponticoides Vaill. (Wagenitz & Hellwig 2000; Greuter 2003; Hellwig 2004; Susanna & Garcia-Jacas 2007, 2009). Centaurea sibirica Linnaeus (1753: 913) is spreading from S Russia to W Siberia and Central Asia (Wagenitz & Hellwig 2000), it is one of the species of sixty-nine names in Centaurea described by Linnaeus and is currently accepted as Psephellus sibiricus (L.) Wagenitz (Wagenitz & Hellwig 2000: 37). However, from a nomenclatural standpoint, Centaurea sibirica has not been typified (Jarvis 2007, Ferrer-Gallego et al. 2014a, 2014b, 2014c, Altınordu & Ferrer-Gallego 2015, Ferrer-Gallego & Altınordu 2016, Iamonico & Peruzzi 2016). This paper designates a lectotype for C. sibirica based on the protologue and consultation of Linnaeus’s original material.

Abstract:
Nine juvenile ferrets ( Mustela putorius furo) with a history of diarrhea were severely dehydrated and had distended abdomens and thin-walled small intestines that contained gas and fluid. Histologically, small intestines exhibited acute superficial atrophic enteritis. Transmission electron microscopy of the small intestine showed rotavirus-like particles within apical vacuoles. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was negative for group A rotavirus. A group C rotavirus-specific RT-PCR assay was developed using consensus primers designed from the alignment of VP6 gene sequences of porcine, bovine, and human strains. A 182-bp product of the VP6 gene was sequenced and showed significant similarity to group C rotavirus VP6 sequences. This strain was designated “Ferret Rota C-MSU.” The entire coding sequence of VP6 was determined and compared with other rotaviruses. Ferret Rota C-MSU virus was found to be most closely related to Shintoku group C rotavirus. This is the first definitive identification of a group C rotavirus in ferrets, based upon RT-PCR, sequencing, and genetic analysis.

Abstract:
Besprochen werden v. a.

Abstract:
Genetic studies of the ferret badgers Melogale conducted in Vietnam have shown that this area is inhabited by three species, M. moschata, M. personata, and M. cucphuongensis, which can be attributed to sibling species (cryptic species). M. personata was found to be widespread not only in southern and central Vietnam, but also in the northern provinces (Lang Son, Ha Giang, Ninh Binh), while M. cucphuongensis was found in the provinces Lang Son, Ha Giang, Cao Bang, and Dak Lak, apart from Ninh Binh, from where it was described. The data obtained suggest a sympatric distribution of all three species over the Vietnam area and confirm sympatry of M. personata and M. moschata in southern Vietnam, which has been earlier established on the basis of morphological data.

Abstract:
An experiment was conducted to evaluate the germination, survival, growth performance and biomass yield of nine indigenous multipurpose tree species of Eastern Himalayan region. On average, highest germination (> 80 %) was recorded in Artocarpus heterophyllus, Duabanga grandiflora and Michelia champaca. Germination in the species like Murraya koenghii and Terminalia myriocarpa ranged between 60.0-75.0%. Lowest germination, however, was recorded in Mesua ferrea (35.80%). After one year of growth, the survival percentage was recorded highest in Aquilaria malaccensis (87.80%), followed by M. champaca (85.23%). Among various species, lowest survival was recorded in Phoebe goalparensis (52.70%). So far in height growth was concerned, T. myriocarpa exhibited the highest (61.77cm), followed by D. grandiflora (60.07cm). Aquilaria malaccensis, however, exhibited lowest height growth (44.26cm). Likewise, collar diameter growth was also recorded highest in the seedlings of T. myriocarpa (0.83 cm), followed by D. grandiflora (0.78 cm). Lowest collar diameter growth was recorded in M. ferrea (0.49cm). Significant (P= 0.05) variations were recorded in germination, survival and growth performance of different tree species. Strong positive correlation (P= 0.01) was recorded between height and collar diameter growth of the seedlings. Significant variations (P = 0.05) were also observed in total biomass of the seedlings. Among various species, T. myriocarpa had the highest biomass (19.07g/seedlings) after one year of growth, followed by M. champaca (18.57g/seedling). Lowest biomass (7.11g/seedling) was recorded in A. malaccensis. Data on root-shoot ratio exhibited that A. heterophyllus, M. koenghii and M. ferrea had the comparatively heavier root systems than the other species. Height (P= 0.01) and collar diameter (P= 0.05) growth of the seedlings also exhibited significant positive correlation with biomass accumulation in the seedlings.

Abstract:
Differences between nine spring barley cultivars on structural and functional parameters of PSII operation are shown. Variability of the parameters used changed from 2.2…2.5 (oxidized quinones pool and maximum photochemical efficiency) to 24.6% (performance index PIABS_total). Parameters characterizing the values of excitation energy fluxes (ABS/RC; TRo/RC; ETo/RC) varied to a small extent - 3.1...6.5%, while the lost energy (DIo/RC) much stronger - 14.6%. The efficiency of electron transport from quinine QB and the entire PSII until the PSI’s primary acceptors varied even more - 18.1 and 17.4%, respectively. The PIABS integral performance index combined cultivars into two groups only; PIABS_total index showed more clear differences in cultivars. Cv. Novichok and Fermer were significantly inferior to cv. Forward, Belgorodsky 100, Boyarin and Bionic in most of the studied parameters. However, according to the results of a cluster analysis, cv. Novichok and Forward turned out to be similar to each other, as well as cv. Fermer, Boyarin and Bionic, which separated into the same cluster. Probably, the action of PSII in cultivars of the same cluster differs only quantitative but not qualitative. Therefore, for breeding work on pyramidizing the genes controlling operation of this photosystem, it is advisable to crossing cultivars belonging to different clusters.

Abstract:
Coronaviruses are enveloped RNA viruses capable of causing respiratory, enteric, or systemic diseases in a variety of mammalian hosts that vary in clinical severity from subclinical to fatal. The host range and tissue tropism are largely determined by the coronaviral spike protein, which initiates cellular infection by promoting fusion of the viral and host cell membranes. Companion animal coronaviruses responsible for causing enteric infection include feline enteric coronavirus, ferret enteric coronavirus, canine enteric coronavirus, equine coronavirus, and alpaca enteric coronavirus, while canine respiratory coronavirus and alpaca respiratory coronavirus result in respiratory infection. Ferret systemic coronavirus and feline infectious peritonitis virus, a mutated feline enteric coronavirus, can lead to lethal immuno-inflammatory systemic disease. Recent human viral pandemics, including severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), and most recently, COVID-19, all thought to originate from bat coronaviruses, demonstrate the zoonotic potential of coronaviruses and their potential to have devastating impacts. A better understanding of the coronaviruses of companion animals, their capacity for cross-species transmission, and the sharing of genetic information may facilitate improved prevention and control strategies for future emerging zoonotic coronaviruses. This article reviews the clinical, epidemiologic, virologic, and pathologic characteristics of nine important coronaviruses of companion animals.

Abstract:
Abstract Recent outbreaks of swine-origin influenza A(H3N2) variant virus (H3N2v) in the U.S., mainly among young children with swine exposure, have raised concerns. Previous studies demonstrated older children and young adults had the highest hemagglutination-inhibition (HI) antibodies (Ab) to 2011 H3N2v viruses. In 2013, newly emerging antigenic variants of H3N2v viruses, responsible for 18 human infections, acquired N145K/R mutations in hemagglutinin (HA). Here, human and postinfection ferret sera were tested in HI assays against 2012-13 H3N2v viruses possessing 145N, K or R HA mutations, together with nine historical seasonal H3N2 (sH3N2) viruses circulating since 1968. We found the H3N2v viruses were antigenically distinct but retained a low degree of serologic cross-reactivity (CR) (with ferret antisera) to sH3N2 viruses that circulated in 1990s. Across all age groups (6-80+ years), approximately half were seropositive (HI titer≥40) to the H3N2v viruses. The age related seroprevalence among children were likely associated with primary exposure to sH3N2 viruses in 1990s. We observed a single substitution at 145 in HA was sufficient to change an individual’s seropositivity to the virus and significantly influenced the seroprevalence in certain age groups. The susceptibility to 2012-13 H3N2v viruses remains high in young children, and low in older children and young adults. Improved knowledge of age-related CR Ab is critical for influenza risk assessment and pandemic preparedness.

Abstract:
The thesis studies song lyrics as a concept. As the song is a synthetic genre, the modes of interaction between its two main domains, words and music, are studied, along with the effects of their coexistence. The example used it that of the French chanson of the 1950s – 1980s. Within this period, the study focuses on three authors (Serge Gainsbourg, Boby Lapointe, Nino Ferrer), whose songs, on account of their stylistic similarities, can be considered examples of the “formalist chanson”. This type of chanson prefers linguistic play (puns, alliteration) and other rhetorical or play-oriented devices (pastiche, parody), and makes heavy use of intertextuality. This is often a paradox, as music, as it entails constraints comparable to those of metric poetry, often minimizes formal effect; indeed, the genre of chanson in general is ill-suited to complex wordplay. The song lyric is problematic because whereas it is technically identical to the poem, and can also be put in the same cultural context (in particular, by being published or read aloud), the principles of its functioning are not the same. The analysis of “formalist chanson” lyrics reveals that while the devices used by Gainsbourg, Ferrer and Lapointe can also be found in poetry, the song lyric nonetheless possesses distinguishing features: in particular its dependency on the other elements of the song (music and performance), but also its temporal linearity

Abstract:

This is a study about literary journalism. Its object is formed by stories produced by writer-journalist Jo?o Ant?nio. Through historical and theoretical literature on studies in the fields of journalism and literature, came to the three main categories of analysis, namely: journalistic event, (literary) journalistic narrative and journalism as knowledge. This study intented to identify and examine the presence of these concepts in journalistic work of Jo?o Ant?nio, more specifically on a sample of five of his stories, representing his work in this area, published in newspaper or magazine. The analysis under the three categories conducts a journey that begins with the reflection on the construction of the script ideas and the reasons why the events are chosen and portrayed by the reporter; passes through the narrative mode used by him to perform this framework - to tell the stories; and ends by addressing a possible way of interpreting the reports, the idea of journalism as a form of knowledge.

Abstract:
This book is the definitive history of the largest ever waterborne evacuation. The book reveals the dramatic story of how the New York Harbor maritime community heroically delivered stranded commuters, residents, and visitors out of harm's way. Even before the US Coast Guard called for “all available boats,” tugs, ferries, dinner boats, and other vessels had sped to the rescue from points all across New York Harbor. In less than nine hours, captains and crews transported nearly half a million people from Manhattan. Anchored in eyewitness accounts, the book weaves together the personal stories of people rescued that day with those of the mariners who saved them. The book describes the inner workings of New York Harbor and reveals the collaborative power of its close-knit community. This chronicle of those crucial hours, when hundreds of thousands of lives were at risk, highlights how resourcefulness and basic human goodness triumphed over turmoil on one of America's darkest days.

Abstract:

Abstract:

This chapter recounts anarchist Francisco Ferrer's two martyrdoms: the moral martyrdom of being surveilled at his door by the guard, and the material martyrdom of suffering an electric light over his head all night. The chapter discusses Ferrer's alleged complicity in Mateo Morral's failed attempt on the life of King Alfonso XIII. It also narrates how authorities shut down Ferrer's Modern School in Barcelona and brought charges against only seven alleged accomplices. Each defendant faced nine years except Ferrer, who faced sixteen years after the minister of justice, the Count of Romanones, interceded on his behalf to eliminate a potential death sentence. The chapter then shifts to focus on the liberal politician and future three-time prime minister of Spain, Álvaro Figueroa y Torres, the Count of Romanones. The chapter investigates how he faced backlash from the anarchist movement for his critical article “Mateo Morral the Mystic” published in Diario Universal shortly after the failed assassination attempt. Finally, the chapter looks at Romanones's efforts to reduce Ferrer's sentence. It argues that it may have been a pragmatic effort to avoid retaliatory atentados or an indication of his relationship with Catalan anarchist lay teacher Joan Montseny, who encouraged Romanones to support Ferrer.

Abstract:
Abstract The starting point of modern botanical systematics, the classification of plants, was 1753, the year in which Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) published his Species Plantarum. There he began the practice of using a binomial system to name species and of placing supposedly related species in groups. Linnaeus knew few palms and included only nine species in his work, one of which was a cycad and none of which were from the New World. He at least recognized, however, that palms formed a natural group, the Palmae. Linnaeus’s son Carl (1741-1783) was the first botanist to use the binomial system to describe an Amazon palm. In 1781, he published Mauritia flexuosa. He was also, unwittingly, the first botanist to emphasize the importance of field work in palm systematics. He did not see Mauritiain the field, and described it as having almost no leaves: “Valde singularis haec arbor fere aphylla” (This tree is alone in being nearly leafless) (Linnaeus, 1781). The first botanists actually to collect Amazon palms, at least those from the northern fringe of the region, were Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) and Aime Bonpland (1773-1858).* These celebrated naturalists traveled in the New World between 1799 and 1804. They reached San Carlos de Rio Negro in southern Venezuela and investigated the Rio Casiquiare, which links the Orinoco with the Amazon. Humboldt was greatly impressed by palms. Unlike Linnaeus’s son, he saw Mauritia flexuosagrowing in the wild and wrote of the dependence of Indian tribes on it: “The benefits of It is possible that the first botanist to collect Amazon palms may have been Alexandre Ferreira (1756-1815). He traveled extensively in the Amazon region of Brazil between 1783 and 1792, 10 years before Humboldt and Bonpland (Ferreira, 1972; see also Prance, 1971). To be both patriotic and pedantic, however, I should point out that Sir Walter Ralegh collected a fruit of Mauritia flexuosafrom South America and brought it back to England in 1595 (Humboldt, 1850).

Abstract:
Under irradiance of 1kW-MW, nickel oxide (Ni(II)O, 25 gr)) can heat up to 1,300°C in 6 min, while ferric oxide (Fe(III)2O3, 25gr) up to 88°C in 30 min. Since Ni(II) and Fe(III) have unpaired electron (spin) of respective 2 and 5, the big difference in the MW heating speed must be explained by thermo-upconversion mechanism as recently verified for quick MW heating of water clusters.1) MW heating power by magnetic loss factor of magnetic metal oxides with unpaired electron, i.e., spin dcould not rationalize such heating-speed and temperature difference. Density functional theory-based molecular modeling(DFT/MM, B3LYP, 6-31G*) of NiO-tetramer of [(NiO)2]2 is successfully carried out with negative heat of formation, giving effective absorption in both FIR and IR regions, which verifies that Ni(II)O should be heated up through thermo-upconversion to the IR region via radio-, MW- and FIR-absorption, i.e., FIR/IR absorption and thermal IR dissipation

Abstract:

Abstract:
We constructed two polarisation based space division switches, using nematic liquid crystal variable retarders (LCVR) or ferro-electric liquid crystal polarisation rotators (FLC). Our systems have the potential of establishing a bandwidth transparent relation between 1 input and 9 output multimode optical fibres. [1] To shift a polarised light beam from the input to one of the nine possible outputs, we use a combination of commercially available large aperture LCVRs or FLCs and birefringent calcite [CaCO3] crystals (BC). This yields easily controllable modules for unidirectional beam displacement. Since each LCVR or FLC only needs two control voltage amplitudes, one for zero phase retardance and one for π phase retardance the complete system can be controlled with only four bits. The input light is provided through a GRIN collimating lens terminated singlemode optical fibre, whereas the light exiting the last BC is coupled in 1 out of 9 possible output fibres located in a two-dimensional PMMA (PolyMethyl MethAcrylate) fibre array holder fabricated with deep proton lithography. This technique allows to position the fibres with a ± 2 pm accuracy. The compact system construction is depicted in figure 1. The maximum frequency at which the LCVRs can be driven and hence, at which switching between two fibres is possible, is on the order of 30 Hz. Using a Nippon Sheet Glass Planar Microlens (DI-PML®) array to couple light exiting the last BC in the optical fibres located in the PMMA array holder, we obtain the losses and cross-talk ratios given in table 1.

Abstract:
A broad objective of many lower extremity exoskeletons is to allow the wearer to expend less of their own energy for locomotion. Existing exoskeleton control algorithms are based on positive feedback. Forces are generated to augment movement initiated by the wearer. Positive feedback, however, can have destabilizing effects in dynamic systems. In fact, stability in these lower extremity exoskeletons is achieved by relying on the wearer’s neuromuscular system. Relying on the wearer to maintain stability may increase metabolic demand, which is counter productive to increasing efficiency. Thus, the goal of this study was to measure how a simple form of positive feedback that augments ankle push-off power affects both metabolic efficiency and dynamic walking stability. We developed a pair of powered ankle-foot orthoses (PAFOs) similar in design to Ferris, et al. (J. Appl. Biomech. 21, 189–197, 2005). Nine young healthy adults (23.3±1.6 years) walked on a treadmill in the PAFOs under two conditions: (1) with and (2) without push-off power assistance. Metabolic energy expenditure was calculated using indirect calorimetry. Walking stability was quantified using techniques for studying stability of dynamic system trajectories. The maximum Lyapunov exponent for assessing local dynamic stability, and the maximum Floquet multiplier magnitude for assessing orbital stability were calculated from foot and shank kinematics for each condition. Greater Lyapunov exponents and Floquet multipliers indicate decreased stability. Walking with mechanically generated push-off power increased metabolic efficiency (2.58±0.39 to 2.97±0.38, p<0.01), did not affect local dynamic stability (0.14±0.02 to 0.14±0.02, p = 0.77), but decreased orbital dynamic stability (0.43±0.03 to 0.48±0.06, p = 0.05). This study provides evidence that positive feedback can negatively affect stability. Further investigations into understanding stability of movement will be necessary for the design of controllers for powered lower extremity exoskeletons.

Abstract:
In 2016, more than 76,380 new melanoma cases were diagnosed and 10,130 people were expected to die from skin cancer in the United States (one death per hour) [1]. A recent study demonstrates that the economic burden of skin cancer treatment is substantial and, in the United States, the cost was increased from $3.6 billion in 2002–2006 to $8.1 billion in 2007–2011 [2]. Monitoring moderate and high-risk patients and identifying melanoma in the earliest stage of disease should save lives and greatly diminish the cost of treatment. In this project, we are focused on detection and monitoring of new potential melanoma sites with medium/high risk patients. We believe those patients have a serious need and they need to be motivated to be engaged in their treatment plan. High-risk patients are more likely to be engaged with their skin health and their health care providers (physicians). Considering the high morbidity and mortality of melanoma, these patients are motivated to spend money on low-cost mobile device technology, either from their own pocket or through their health care provider if it helps reduce their risk with early detection and treatment. We believe that there is a role for mobile device imaging tools in the management of melanoma risk, if they are based on clinically validated technology that supports the existing needs of patients and the health care system. In a study issued in the British Journal of Dermatology [2] of 39 melanoma apps [2], five requested to do risk assessment, while nine mentioned images for expert review. The rest fell into the documentation and education categories. This seems like to be reliable with other dermatology apps available on the market. In a study at University of Pittsburgh [3], Ferris et al. established 4 apps with 188 clinically validated skin lesions images. From images, 60 of them were melanomas. Three of four apps tested misclassified +30% of melanomas as benign. The fourth app was more accurate and it depended on dermatologist interpretation. These results raise questions about proper use of smartphones in diagnosis and treatment of the patients and how dermatologists can effectively involve with these tools. In this study, we used a MATLAB (The MathWorks Inc., Natick, MA) based image processing algorithm that uses an RGB color dermoscopy image as an input and classifies malignant melanoma versus benign lesions based on prior training data using the AdaBoost classifier [5]. We compared the classifier accuracy when lesion boundaries are detected using supervised and unsupervised segmentation. We have found that improving the lesion boundary detection accuracy provides significant improvement on melanoma classification outcome in the patient data.

Abstract:
The partition ratio of cerium (Ce) and uranium (U) in the ingot, slag and dust phases has been investigated for the effect of the slag type, slag concentration and basicity in an electric arc melting process. An electric arc furnace (EAF) was used to melt the stainless steel wastes, simulated by uranium oxide and the real wastes from the uranium conversion plant in Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI). The composition of the slag former used to capture the contaminants such as uranium, cerium, and cesium during the melt decontamination process generally consisted of silica (SiO2), calcium oxide (CaO) and aluminum oxide (Al2O3). Also, Calcium fluoride (CaF2), nickel oxide (NiO), and ferric oxide (Fe2O3) were added to provide an increase in the slag fluidity and oxidative potential. Cerium was used as a surrogate for the uranium because the thermochemical and physical properties of cerium are very similar to those of uranium. Cerium was removed from the ingot phase to slag phase by up to 99% in this study. The absorption ratio of cerium was increased with an increase of the amount of the slag former. And the maximum removal of cerium occurred when the basicity index of the slag former was 0.82. The natural uranium (UO2) was partitioned from the ingot phase to the slag phase by up to 95%. The absorption of the natural uranium was considerably dependent on the basicity index of the slag former and the composition of the slag former. The optimum condition for the removal of the uranium was about 1.5 for the basicity index and 15wt% of the slag former. According to the increase of the amount of slag former, the absorption of uranium oxide in the slag phase was linearly increased due to an increase of its capacity to capture uranium oxide within the slag phase. Through experiments with various slag formers, we verified that the slag formers containing calcium fluoride (CaF2) and a high amount of silica were more effective for a melt decontamination of stainless steel wastes contaminated with uranium. During the melting tests with stainless steel wastes from the uranium conversion plant (UCP) in KAERI, we found that the results of the uranium decontamination were very similar to those of the uranium oxide from the melting of stimulated metal wastes.
