Abstract:
New genus and species of the family Niphargidae (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Senticaudata), Chaetoniphargus lubuskensis gen. nov., sp. nov. from the subterranean waters of cave Lubuška jama near Hajdučki Kukovi in the western part of Velebit Mt. in Croatia, is described and figured, and its relations to other genera and species of the family Niphargidae is discussed. The new taxon is a small niphargid, similar to Niphargobates. The list of all known genera of family Niphargidae is given and key to the genera of this family is presented.

The molecular systematics of the subterranean amphipod genus Haploginglymus is addressed through the phylogenetic analysis of three DNA gene fragments (nuclear ribosomal 28S and protein- coding Histone 3, plus mitochondrial Cytochrome c Oxidase subunit I). We take advantage of the description of a new species from southern Spain (Haploginglymus geos sp. nov.) to assess the singularity of this genus endemic to the Iberian Peninsula and the inclusion of the morphologically aberrant H. morenoi within Haploginglymus. Our results corroborate the monophyly of the family Niphargidae but shows Nipharg

Abstract:
Niphargidae is among the largest families of freshwater subterranean amphipods in the world, and one of the most important macroinvertebrate groups in European groundwaters. The knowledge of their species diversity on a country level is often incomplete due to demanding taxonomy. In this paper we critically evaluated species diversity of the family in Belgium, using published records and samples from our own field work. Morphology-based identifications confirmed the presence of genera Microniphargus and Niphargus, represented with one and eight species, respectively. Most of the species found

In 1923, Robert Feulgen designed a quantitative approach to measure the relative DNA content of a species (its so-called "C-value", which is defined as half of the DNA content of a somatic cell and is expressed in pg). The Feulgen approach has several advantages: it can be used on ethanol-preserved samples, it is relatively inexpensive, and it does not require sophisticated equipment (Hardie et al. 2002, Jeffery and Gregory 2014, Kasten 2003). Gathering DNA content information is a key preliminary step for whole-genome sequencing of non-model species and also yield important information for ec

Species richness patterns (SRP) emerge due to overlap in species distributions. They critically depend on two parameters of species ranges: geographic position and size. An important question is which species contribute more to the observed SRP, range restricted or widespread species. Most studies concluded that the widespread species tend to influence SRP more. However, the relative importance of either may strongly depend on the study system. Here we investigated how subterranean species of different range sizes contribute to SRP in the Western Balkans. We studied spatially defined datasets

A new species of the family Niphargidae, Niphargus zarosiensis sp. nov., is described from samples collected in 2016 from a spring draining into Lake Zaros on Crete Island, Greece. This is the first record of the genus Niphargus from a spring on Crete south of the Ida Mountains. Two other Niphargus-species on Crete are known: Niphargus impexus Karaman, 2016 and Niphargus lakusici Karaman, 2017. N. zarosiensis sp. nov. is closely related to N. impexus described from northern Crete. The differences to N. lakusici are more obvious.

Understanding phenotype variation is among the central topics in biology. We revise and reanalyze studies of the amphipod genus Niphargus to confront two potential mechanisms driving its phenotype variation, namely, cladogenesis and adaptive evolution. We found evidence for both mechanisms. Reanalysis of a subset of traits using molecular phylogeny showed moderate phylogenetic signal, consistent with the hypothesis that overall phylogenetic variation increases with phylogeny. The phylogenetic signal in Niphargus traits seems to be stronger at the tips of the phylogeny than at basal splits. Ind
