Porous silicon nitride was prepared by extrusion of silicon followed by nitridation at 1723 K. PMMA spheres with 20 µm in diameter were employed as the pore-forming precursors. b-silicon nitride whiskers were added to the dough for extrusion and their effect on the properties of porous RBSN were examined. The nitridation rate that was obtained from the weight change of the sample due to the nitridation process was between 75% and 80%. However, XRD patterns of the samples after nitridation had no Si peak. That means the actual nitridation rate of the sample was higher than that obtained from th

This paper presents the microwave dielectric property of porous silicon nitride ceramics at a frequency of 9360 MHz, which were fabricated by the nitridation of silicon powder. The porous ceramics with different volume fraction of porosity from 18.6% to 56.2% were produced by adding different amount of the pore-forming agent into the initial silicon powder. Microstructural analysis revealed a dense matrix containing large pores and cavities with needle-shaped and flaky β-Si3N4 grains distributing in it. The conclusion was made that the quality of the GaN films is dependent on the degree of porosity of the GaP substrate. XPS spectra were used to investigate the chemical composition of porous GaP substrates, obtained by electrochemical etching. From XPS measurement we determined that the annealing in atomic nitrogen leads to the formation of GaN films. Non-intrusive techniques such as medical CT-Scan or micro-CT allow the definition of 3D connected pore networks in porous materials, such as sedimentary rocks or concrete. The definition of these networks is a key step towards the evaluation of fluid flow and heat transfer in energy resource (e.g., hydrocarbon and geothermal reservoirs) and CO2 sequestration research projects. As material heterogeneities play a role at all scales (from micro- to project-scale), numerical models represent a powerful tool for bridging the gap between small-scale measurements provided by X-ray imaging techniques

Abstract:
Tillage modifies soil structure, altering conditions for plant growth and transport processes through the soil. However, the resulting loose structure is unstable and susceptible to collapse due to aggregate fragmentation during wetting and drying cycles, and coalescense of moist aggregates by internal capillary forces and external compactive stresses. Presently, limited understanding of these complex processes often leads to consideration of the soil plow layer as a static porous medium. With the purpose of filling some of this knowledge gap, the objectives of this Project were to: 1) Identif
