Abstract:
The current infrafamilial taxonomy of the Iridaceae recognizes four subfamilies; Isophysidoideae (1: 1); Nivenioideae (6: ca. 92), Iridoideae (29: 890), and Crocoideae (29: 1032). Phylogenetic analyses of sequences of five plastid DNA regions, rbcL, rps4, trnL–F, matK, and rps16, confirm most aspects of this classification and the evolutionary patterns that they imply, importantly the sisiter relationship of Isophysidoideae to the remainder of the family and the monophyly of Iridoideae. Subfamily Nivenioideae is, however, paraphyletic; Crocoideae is consistently found nested within it, sister to the core Nivenioideae, the woody Klattia, Nivenia, and Witsenia. This clade is sister to Aristea, which in turn is sister to the Madagascan Geosiris, and then to the Australasian Patersonia. We treat Aristea, Geosiris, and Patersonia as separate subfamilies, Aristeoideae and the new Geosiridaceae and Patersonioideae, rendering Nivenioideae and Crocoideae monophyletic. The alternative, uniting a widely circumscribed Nivenioideae and Crocoideae, seems undesirable because Nivenioideae have none of the numerous synapomorphies of Crocoideae, and that subfamily includes more than half the total species of Iridaceae. Main synapomorphies of Crocoideae are: pollen operculate; exine perforate; ovule campylotropous; root xylem vessels with simple perforations; rootstock a corm; inflorescence usually a spike; plants deciduous. Four more derived features of Crocoideae are shared only with core Nivenioideae: flowers long-lived; perianth tube well developed; flowers sessile; and septal nectaries present. The genera of the latter subfamily are evergreen shrubs, have monocot-type secondary growth, tangentially flattened seeds, and the inflorescence unit is a binate rhipidium. The latter feature unites core Nivenioideae with Aristea, Geosiris, and Patersonia, which have fugaceous flowers and, with few exceptions, a blue perianth. Molecular-based phylogenetic trees using sequences from five plastid DNA regions now show discrete generic clusters within Crocoideae and Iridoideae, the foundation for the tribal classification. The five tribe classification of Iridoideae, initially based on morphological characters and subsequently supported by a four plastid DNA region sequence analysis, continues to receive support using additional DNA sequences. Application of molecular clock techniques to our phylogeny indicates that the Iridaceae differentiated in the late Cretaceous and diverged from the next most closely related family, Doryanthaceae circa 82 mya, thus during the Campanian. The Tasmanian Isophysis is the only extant member of the clade sister to the remainder of the Iridaceae, from which it may have diverged 66 mya, in the Maastrichtian. The generic phylogeny shows the proximal clades of the family are all Australasian, which corroborates past hypotheses that the Iridaceae originated in Antarctica-Australasia, although its subsequent radiation occurred elsewhere, notably in southern Africa and temperate and highland South America at the end of the Eocene or later.

Summary This article formalizes the proof of Niven’s theorem [12] which states that if x/π and sin(x) are both rational, then the sine takes values 0, ±1/2, and ±1. The main part of the formalization follows the informal proof presented at Pr∞fWiki (https://proofwiki.org/wiki/Niven’s_Theorem#Source_of_Name). For this proof, we have also formalized the rational and integral root theorems setting constraints on solutions of polynomial equations with integer coefficients [8, 9].

Abstract:
Arsenic (As) is identified by the EPA as the third highest toxic inorganic contaminant. Almost every 9th or 10th human in more than 70 countries including mainland China is affected by As. Arsenic along with other toxins not only affects human life but also creates alarming situations such as the deterioration of farm lands and desertion of industrial/mining lands. Researchers and administrators have agreed to opt for phytoremediation of As over costly cleanups.Boehmeria niveaL. can soak up various heavy metals, such as Sb, Cd, Pb, and Zn. But the effect of As pollution on the biology and metabolism ofB. niveahas been somewhat overlooked. This study attempts to evaluate the extent of As resistance, chlorophyll content, and metabolic changes in As-polluted (5, 10, 15, and 20 mg L−1As)B. niveain hydroponics. Toxic effects of As in the form of inhibited growth were apparent at the highest level of added As. The significant changes in the chlorophyll, electrolyte leakage, and H2O2, significant increases in As in plant parts, catalase (CAT), and malondialdehyde (MDA), with applied As revealed the potential ofB. niveafor As decontamination. By employing the metabolic machinery ofB. nivea, As was sustainably removed from the contaminated areas.

Abstract:
In a comparative study to determine their effectiveness for early detection of prolific histamine-producing bacteria from tuna samples, Niven's medium proved to be superior to three modifications of the medium. Presumptive colonies could be detected in 24 h on Niven's agar surface-plated and incubated at 35°C. Following confirmatory histamine determination with high performance liquid chromatography of the tuna fish infusion broth inoculated with presumptive histamine-producers and non-producers, detection rates of 95.8 and 93.9% were obtained from temperature-abused and bacteria-spiked tuna samples, respectively, using Niven's agar. The other three modifications provided much lower detection rates and higher false-positive and false-negative results than did Niven's agar.

Abstract:
Histamine poisoning is one of the most common chemically induced seafoodborne illnesses reported in the United States today. The causative agents are biogenic amines, commonly produced by gram-negative bacteria. The purpose of this study was to detect and identify histamine-producing bacteria associated with standard industry practices during the harvesting, receiving, and processing of mahimahi and yellowfin tuna in North Carolina. Twenty-nine composite samples were obtained from 18 mahimahi and 11 yellowfin tuna and analyzed for their histamine content. No sample analyzed exceeded 2 ppm histamine, the lower detection limit. Composite fish muscle and environmental samples were screened (n = 386) for the presence of histamine-producing bacteria. Twenty-six percent (145) of 549 isolates selected on the basis of their morphological characteristics tested positive on Niven's media. Sixty-three Niven-positive isolates were gram negative, and 58 were gram positive. Of the 43 isolates tested further, 5 were confirmed as histamine producers, and all 5 produced at low levels (<250 ppm in 48 h at >15°C). Three gram-negative and two gram-positive isolates were identified as Enterobacter cloacae and Staphylococcus kloosii, respectively. This study revealed that gram-negative bacteria might not be solely responsible for histamine production in at-risk fish. The confirmation of histamine-producing bacteria demonstrates the potential risk for histamine production. However, no detectable levels were found in the composite fish muscle samples analyzed even though 60% of the yellowfin tuna harvested did not meet the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's regulatory hazard analysis critical control point guidelines for temperature reduction. Therefore, no seafood safety risks were found under the standard industry practices observed in this study.

Abstract:
Poisoning due to ingestion of foods with elevated levels of biogenic amines (histamine, putrescine, cadaverine, and tyramine) is well documented. Histamine fish poisoning largely is due to growth of naturally occurring bacteria associated with scombroid fish species. A rapid and reliable method is needed to screen for the presence of histamine-forming bacteria in fish. This study included a comparison of three methods for the detection of histamine-producing bacteria. A total of 152 histamine-producing and non–histamine-producing bacteria from multiple sources were screened using a modified Niven's agar method, a potentiometric method, and a PCR-based assay targeting a 709-bp fragment of the histidine decarboxylase gene. Histamine production by bacterial isolates was confirmed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Bacterial strains were categorized as producing high amounts of histamine, low amounts of histamine, or no histamine. Of the 152 strains tested, 128 (84%) were positive with the Niven's agar method, 73 (48%) were positive with the potentiometric technique, and 74 (49%) were positive with the PCR assay. Overall, a 38% false-positive rate was observed with the modified Niven's agar method, although this method detected both low-histamine and high-histamine strains. There was a high degree of concordance (>99%) between results of the potentiometric and PCR methods, but neither of these methods detected low-histamine bacteria. These observations support the need for a simple and straightforward yet sensitive method for detecting histamine-producing bacteria in seafood and environmental samples.

Abstract:
ABSTRAK Penelitian bertujuan mengevaluasi ransum mengandung silase daun rami (Boehmeria nivea) terhadap kandungan BK dan NPK feses domba garut. Penelitian menggunakan rancangan acak lengkap (RAL) dengan empat perlakuan, yaitu R1 = 100% rumput R2 = 60% rumput + 40% konsentrat, R3 = 30% silase daun rami + 30% rumput + 40% konsentrat, R4 = 60% silase daun rami +40% konsentrat. Masing-masing perlakuan diulang sebanyak lima kali. Kata Kunci : domba garut, daun rami, feses, NPK, silaseABSTRACTThe study aimed to evaluate the ration containing silage of Boehmeria nivea leaf on the dry matter (DM) and N, P, K content of garut sheep feces. The study used a completely randomized design (CRD) with four treatment, namely R1 = 100% grass; R2 = 60% grass + 40% concentrate; R3 = 30% silage of Boehmeria nivea leaf + 30% grass + 40% concentrate; and R4 = 60% silage of Boehmeria nivea leaf + 40% concentrate. Each treatment was repeated five times. The data obtained were analyzed by variance of analysis and continued with Duncan's multiple range test. The results showed that the use of Boehmeria nivea leaf silage up to 60% in garut sheep ration significantly affected the dry matter (DM), ash, and K content (P <0.05), but did not affect the N and P content of sheep feces. Giving silage of Boehmeria nivea leaf up to 60% in the ration produced the highest fecal ash content (25.49%), 33.55-40.89% DM, 2.27-2.53% N,0.57-0.67% N and 0.21-0.34% K. This research concludes that the use of Boehmeria nivea leaves silage up to 60% has the potential as an organic fertilizer in providing N, P, and K elements for plants. Keywords: Boehmeria nivea leaves, feces, garut sheep, NPK, silage

Abstract:
Abstract The transposable element Tam3 of Antirrhinum majus is capable of causing large-scale chromosomal restructuring. It induced a large deletion at the nivea locus, to produce the allele niv-:529. The deletion removed the entire nivea coding region while the element remains intact with the potential to induce further rearrangements. Genetic experiments showed that the endpoint of the deletion (called x) is closely linked to nivea. The DNA sequences of niv-:529, a genomic excision of Tam3 from niv-:529, and the original genomic position of x have been determined. These data suggest that the deletion could have resulted from an abortive transposition or through breakage and religation.

Abstract:
Chromium metal is one of the heavy metal wastes from various industries and is persistent for the agricultural environment, especially in rice fields. Chromium metal can change biodiversity and ecosystem function in paddy soil. Chromium metal phytoremediation that pollutes paddy soils with hemp (Boehmeria nivea) is important because paddy soils play a role as a living medium for food crops, especially rice (Oryza sativa). One indicator of the success of phytoremediation is the reduction of chromium metal content in the soil, so it requires a policy system to maintain a healthy environmentally friendly agriculture. This study aimed to determine the ability of Boehmeria nivea to reduce levels of chromium metal in the soil and provide policy solutions to keep environmentally healthy agriculture. This study used a complete randomized block design, random sampling of chromium metal data. The results showed the initial concentration of chromium metal in the soil was 2.36 ppm, after treatment with the interaction between Agrobacterium sp. I3 with Boehmeria nivea (P0B1T1) and interaction of organic matter (compost) with Boehmeria nivea (P0B2T1) obtained Cr 1.37 ppm metal content with a decrease of 42.01%. The resulting policy solution is the Environment Health Agriculture System (EHAS). The conclusion of this study was phytoremediation of chromium metal using Boehmeria nivea combined with the Environment Health Agriculture System can create a healthy environmentally friendly agricultural system.

Abstract:
Chromosomes and nuclear DNA amount were analyzed in leaf tissues of Luzula nivea, Luzula luzuloides, and Luzula multiflora. Intra- and interspecific karyological variability was stated. Chromosome numbers in diploids ranged 2n = 8-24 in L. nivea and L. luzuloides and 2n = 12-84 in hexaploid L. multiflora. Karyological variability resulted mainly from chromosome fission (agmatoploidy) and aneusomaty; chromosome fusion (symploidy) and polyploidy were also involved. Flow cytometric determination of nuclear genome size using propidium iodide staining gave values of 1.584 pg in L. luzuloides, 1.566 pg in L. nivea, and 3.034 pg in L. multiflora. Variability in relative nuclear genome size within species was measured by 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole staining. In contrast with previous reports, variability was fairly small and ranged from 1.796 to 1.864 pg in L. luzuloides, from 1.783 to 1.847 pg and from 1.737 to 1.808 pg in two populations (S and F) of L. nivea, respectively, and from 3.125 to 3.271 pg in L. multiflora. An intraplant (interleaf) genome size variation was also observed and its possible causes are discussed.Key words: Luzula, holokinetic chromosomes, agmatoploidy, symploidy, polyploidy, nuclear DNA amount, intraplant genome size variability, flow cytometry.

Abstract:
