This thesis examines the work of two of the twentieth century’s foremost cultural figures, the Palestinian-American literary critic Edward Said (1935-2003) and the Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish (1941-2008), and focuses specifically on the formulation and representation in their respective work of the theme of identity. It explores the depictions of this concept in their writing; comparing and contrasting their personal viewpoints on the various facets of their own identity as Palestinian Arabs and cosmopolitan global citizens expressed through their chosen literary medium, prose for Said an

The analysis of the enantiomeric purity of chiral carboxylic acids requires a reagent to give acceptable NMR chemical shift non-equivalence with a wide range of substrate acids. Extensive studies of the behaviour of N-mono- methyl, N,N-dimethyl and cyclic amines as chiral solvating agents led to the finding that 1,2 diphenyl-1,2-diaminoethane can induce substantial non- equivalence in the diastereomeric salts of chiral a-phenyl and a-halo carboxylic acids. DOSY is an invaluable tool to analyse and resolve the signals of mixtures of chemicals in solution. DOSY measures an ensemble of nuclei in a mixture, using pulsed field gradients (PFGs) to encode, and later decode, the positions of spins. A unique characteristic of NMR is that, unlike other spectroscopic techniques, it separates the excitation of signals from their detection. By manipulating the type of signal excitation used, the chemical information content of a spectrum can be controlled. This versatility has made NMR a powerful and flexible weapon in the analytical arsenal of chemists, not only for the determination of structural, chemical, dynamic, and physical properties of molecules, but also for the analysis of mixtures, since NMR has the ability to study these intact without the need for physical separation. Wood is our most important renewable resource. We need better quality and quantity both according to the wood itself and the processes that are using wood as a raw material. Hence, the understanding of the chemical composition of the wood is of high importance. Improved and new methods for analyzing wood are important to achieve better knowledge about both refining processes and raw material. The combination of NMR and multivariate analyses (MVA) is a powerful method for these analyses but so far it has been limited mainly to 1D NMR. In this project, we have developed methods for combining 2D

Abstract:
In this thesis, we applied both numerical methods and artificial intelligence techniques to NMR data processing and analysis. First, a comprehensive study of the Iterative Quadratic Maximum Likelihood (IQML) method applied to NMR spectral parameter estimation is reported. The IQML is compared to other conventional time domain data analysis methods. Extensive simulations demonstrate the superior performance of the IQML method. We also develop a new technique, which uses genetic algorithm with a priori knowledge, to improve the quantification of NMR spectral parameters. The new proposed method o
