The aim of my essay is to show how the Afro-American writer Michelle Cliff uses the concept of matriliny in the process of the feminist recovery of the history of Jamaica. I will argue that Michelle Cliff is a writer that honors the anachronistic tradition of essentialism that is based on the notion that cultures and identities have certain innate qualities immutable irrespective of time and place. I will contend that this essentialist worldview, skews the fictive world of Cliff’s much celebrated “Clare Savage novels”: Abeng and No Telephone to Heaven by reducing it to facile, Manichean opposi

Unnecessary amputations can be avoided with the healing of foot ulcerations in neuropathic feet. Traditional approaches have relied on relieving plantar and other extrinsic foot pressures. A retrospective review was performed of the office records of patients with Wagner grade 1 and 2 neuropathic forefoot ulcerations who were prescribed an IPOS (Niagara Falls, NY) postoperative shoe. A total of 33 patients were in the chart review. Twenty-three of these patients were located and agreed to participate in a telephone survey. Patients showed a compliance of 78%. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective chart review and telephone follow-up of children who underwent VT removal from 1995 through 1998. RESULTS: Among 109 patients (162 ears; 58% male), the mean age at VT removal was 6.7 years. Most VTs (59%) were T-tubes, and most (91%) were removed because of prolonged retention (mean 2.3 years). Tom Tykwer gives Krzysztof Kiesłłowski a voice from the dead. Kiesłłowski's script follows the unlikely love affair between an idealistic woman bomber and the young second-generation cop who helps her escape from jail. They bring each other different kinds of salvation. A pattern of striking aerial visuals points to the characters' transcendence of both mundane laws and the rhetoric of melodrama. This rich film surely is All That Kiesłłowski's Heaven Allows.
