The regulation of the economic crisis within German capitalism since 2008 seems to follow thebasic structures of the so-called „Modell Deutschland”: in industrial relations a corporatistarrangement between capital, state and labour tried to absorb the consequences of the crisis,and the traditional export industry supported the new economic growth since summer 2009.The article analyses the internal and external dynamics of its transition between structuralchange of the world economy and conditions of political decision-making since its proclamationin 1976. In conclusion today the German „Exportmodell” is no longer based on classcompromises in German society on the one hand and on European balances between interestsof economic stabilization and modernization on the other hand, but a force that is able toundermine alternative paths of economic development in Europe.

Abstract:
The particles schon and noch in German add an aspectual reading to events in different assertions. While schon tends to a perfective reading of an event, an imperfective reading appears with noch, hence both particles have a similar function on the event modification. Overtly, they are located unrestricted in the middle field of a German clause and can freely change their position towards temporal adverbs such as heute, jetzt, bald etc. It seems that syntax does not have an impact to order schon heute or heute schon. This variation is of main interest of the paper: Is there a linear restriction of adverbs and schon/noch, and does a change in the output cause a reinterpretation? The paper presents main assumptions on the word order of aspectual particles and temporal adverbs from the semantic and the syntactic perspective. An experimental study on prosodic factors will complete the overview and its preferences for the linearization of the sequences in question. The result is that common categorical grammar is not able to account for all possible outcomes with respect to contextual preferences. Therefore, a more flexible grammar concept is needed to build a usage-based concept on word order variation for these functional elements.

Writer Pavol Strauss is little known in Slovakia and Poland because there were several decades between his first collections of poetry written in the German language in the period between the two World Wars and his Slovak post-war essays, and then his other works (essays, diaries and aphorisms) published sporadically or after 1989 on the other. He published four collections of poetry in German: Die Kanone auf dem Ei (1936), Schwarze Verse (1937), Worte aus der Nacht (published bilingually in 2001) and Bruder Abel lebt ja noch (manuscript).After 1946 Pavol Strauss stopped writing poetry and stopped writing in German.

Abstract Während das Aufkommen der Bezeichnung Germanist für die Vertreter der Deutschen Philologie von der zweiten Hälfte der 1830er Jahre an nachweisbar ist, blieb Weinholds 1888 aufgeworfene Frage ,,Wann und wo ist das ungeheuerliche wort Germanistik aufgekommen?“ bisher unbeantwortet. Die hier vorgestellten Belege zeigen, dass der Terminus Germanistik schon seit den frühen 1850er Jahren insbesondere in Zeitungsbeiträgen erscheint und als Bezeichnung für die noch neue Disziplin verwendet wird. Als Verfasser des Artikels mit dem (bisher) frühesten Beleg für Germanistik konnte der ,Altmünchener‘ Privatgelehrte Hyazinth Holland ermittelt werden, der mehrfach vergeblich eine Universitätsprofessur zu erlangen suchte.While the emergence of the term Germanist for the representatives of German philology can be traced from the second half of the 1830s on, Weinhold’s question ,,Wann und wo ist das ungeheuerliche Wort Germanistik aufgekommen?“ [When and where did the monstrous word Germanistik arise?], brought up in 1888, has not been answered up to now. The evidence presented here proves that the term Germanistik <?page nr="648"?>has been used since the early 1850s, particularly in newspaper articles, being coined as a term for the still young academic discipline. The author of the article with the (so far) earliest evidence of Germanistik could be identified as the ,Altmünchener‘ private scholar Hyazinth Holland who repeatedly tried in vain to obtain a university professorship.

In Germany at the turn of the 20th century the interest in Fichte’s philosophy was growing remarkably.This phenomenon has to be considered as a part of a broader “German movement”, i. e. a collective cultural trend aiming at pinpointing what had been properly “German” in the last two centuries. This need became even more acute by the outbreak of the Great War.In that context Fichte’s work was used as a benchmark for creating and elaborating on the myth of “the German character.” Many intellectuals of that time interpreted Fichte’s personality and thought as representing ideas, ethical values, spiritual positions, cultural attitudes and political stances which accounted for the specificity of “Germanness”. Since these ideas and values were believed to be particular to the German culture, Fichte was celebrated all across the nation as an exemplary German.Harkening back to contemporary sources the following paper aims to illustrate how Fichte’s image was moulded in order to meet needs and issues emerging from the War and its philosophical-ideological interpretations. At the same time it suggests that the “Fichte case” from the beginning of the 20th century can be interpreted as a paradigmatic example of how philosophical and cultural issues can be ideologically (mis-) interpreted and used to give support to a particular political view.Die Jahrzehnte um die Jahrhundertwende erlebten im wilhelminischen Deutschland eine starke Zunahme des Interesses an der Philosophie Fichtes.Die kollektive Begeisterung für Fichte lässt sich auf der Folie einer ‚deutschen Bewegung‘ betrachten, deren Ziel die Suche nach dem eigentumlichen ‚Deutschen‘ in den letzten zwei Jahrhunderten war. Diese Suche intensivierte sich noch mit dem Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkrieges.In diesem Zusammenhang wurde Fichtes Denken zu einem Bezugspunkt fur die Ausarbeitung des Mythos von der Besonderheit des deutschen Wesens. Viele Intellektuelle zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts und während der Kriegszeit wollten Fichte als Vorbild einer Persönlichkeit sehen, die edle Ideale, anspruchsvolle Vorstellungen, deutschen Geist und starken Willen vertrat gegenüber einer geistlosen, ethisch verdorbenen Welt, gegen ein intellektualisiertes Leben und die ‘zivilisierte Un-Kultur’ der modernen Menschheit.Im Bezug auf die Verflechtung von philosophischen Begriffen, idealisierter Kriegsvergeistigung, patriotischem Glauben und Willen nach nationaler Bildung setzt sich das Paper zum Ziel die Vorbildhaftigkeit, die Fichte damals zugeschrieben wurde, zur Darstellung zu bringen und quellenmäßig zu analysieren. Der ‚Fall Fichte‘ wird aber zugleich als historisch kontextualisiertes Erlebnisbeispiel des Ineinanderfließens von kulturellen Überhöhungen und politischen Anforderungen betrachtet: ein exemplarischer Fall vom ideologischen (Miss-) Verständnis des Geistigen.

After the First World War, foreign cultural policy became one of the few fields in which Germany could act with relative freedom from the restrictions imposed by the Treaty of Versailles. In this context the Hamburg doctors Ludolph Brauer, Bernhard Nocht and Peter Mühlens created the Revista Médica de Hamburgo (as of 1928 Revista Médica Germano-Ibero-Americana), a monthly medical journal in Spanish (and occasionally in Portuguese), to increase German influence especially in Latin American countries. The focus of this article is on the protagonists of this project, the Hamburg doctors, the Foreign Office in Berlin, the German pharmaceutical industry, and the publishing houses involved.

Summary The umlauted forms of the German modals dürfen, mögen, müssen and können are unexpected from the viewpoint of the sound laws, and must be therefore explained in other ways. Despite more than one century of research, a convincing solution to this problem is still lacking. In this paper, a new solution is proposed, which attempts to consider the several factors implied by this linguistic change. As observed by Lühr (1987), mögen and müssen seem to have been the first verbs to show umlaut extension, especially in Southern dialects. This fact can be explained as a morphologically driven language change, since the two verbs were inadequate with respect to the paradigm-structure conditions of the modals’ inflectional class. The extension of umlaut established a stem vowel alternation between the singular and the plural of the present indicative as in all other verbs of the inflectional class. Therefore, umlaut extension can be seen as the result of a morphological change increasing the system adequacy of the verbs (cf. Wurzel 1989). Two other factors were crucial for the linguistic change. The functional neutralization of the mood opposition between the indicative and the subjunctive, typical of this verbal class, might also have played a role, because the subjunctive displayed an umlaut-triggering suffix. Moreover, umlaut extension may also be seen as the result of an additional process of phonological neutralization caused by the action of the umlaut rule in the context of a phonological word in late OHG, as already pointed out by Behaghel (1928). Résumé Les formes avec umlaut dans les verbes modaux allemands dürfen, mögen, müssen et können n’ont pas une origine phonétique. Après plus d’un siècle de recherche on n’a pas encore trouvé d’explication convaincante pour ce phénomène. Dans cet article, on propose une nouvelle solution au problème, qui tente de prendre en considération les nombreux facteurs liés à ce changement linguistique. Comme l’a observé Lühr (1987), mögen et müssen ont été les premiers verbes à montrer l’extension de l’umlaut, particulièrement dans les dialectes méridionaux. Ce fait peut s’expliquer par l’état morphologiquement inadéquat de ces deux verbes quant aux conditions de la structure paradigmatique de cette classe flexionnelle. En effet, l’umlaut a établi une alternation de la voyelle radicale entre le singulier et le pluriel du présent de l’indicatif, comme dans tous les autres verbes de cette classe flexionnelle. Dans cette optique, l’extension de l’umlaut serait un changement morphologique qui a amélioré la régularité du système verbal (cf. Wurzel 1989). Deux autres facteurs auraient joué un rôle décisif dans ce changement langagier. La neutralisation fonctionnelle de l’opposition de mode entre l’indicatif et le subjonctif, typique de cette classe verbale, peut aussi avoir joué un rôle dans ce changement, en raison de la présence dans ces verbes d’un suffixe qui produisait l’umlaut au subjonctif. Enfin, le phénomène d’extension de l’umlaut peut aussi s’expliquer comme étant le résultat de l’action neutralisante de la règle phonologique de l’umlaut, qui agissait en vieil-allemand dans le contexte du mot phonologique, comme l’avait déjà observé Behaghel (1928). Zusammenfassung Die umgelauteten Formen der deutschen Modalverben dürfen, mögen, müssen und können sind lautgesetzlich unerwartet. Nach mehr als einem Jahrhundert Forschung, bleibt eine überzeugende Lösung noch offen. In diesem Aufsatz wird eine neue Lösung vorgeschlagen, in der die in diesem Sprachwandel miteinbezogenen verschiedenen Elemente genauer betrachtet werden. Wie von Lühr (1987) schon bemerkt wurde, sind mögen und müssen die ersten Verben gewesen, die die Umlautausdehnung, besonders in oberdeutschen Mundarten, gezeigt haben. Diese Feststellung kann dadurch erklärt werden, dass diese zwei Verben in Bezug auf die Paradigmenstrukturbedingungen ihrer Flexionsklasse unangemessen waren. Von diesem Blickpunkt hat der Umlaut eine Alternanz des Stammvokals zwischen Singular und Plural des Präsens Indikativs geschaffen, die in den anderen Verben der Flexionsklasse üblich war. In dieser Perspektive ist die Umlautausdehnung das Ergebnis eines morphlogischen Wandels gewesen, der die Systemangemessenheit der Verben verbessert hat (vgl. Wurzel 1989). Darüber hinaus müssen zwei andere Aspekte hervorgehoben werden. Die für die Modalverben typische Markiertheitsumkehrung zwischen Indikativ und Konjunktiv, wo es ein umlautauslöschendes Suffix gab, kann auch dazu beigetragen haben, die Umlautausdehnung zu begünstigen, weil eine funktionale Neutralisierung der Modusopposition in dieser Verbklasse zustande kam. Schließlich kann die Umlautausdehnung auch als das Ergebnis der neutralisierenden Auswirkung der phonologischen Umlautregel gesehen werden, die im Ahd. das phonologische Wort als Domäne hatte, wie es von Behaghel (1928) schon vorgeschlagen wurde.

Ende März 2014 hat das Gallup-Institut seine Studie zum Mitarbeiter-Engagement-Index veröffentlicht, welchen sie seit dreizehn Jahren erhebt. Wieder geben 84% der Befragten über achtzehn Jahren an, dass sie sich gering bis gar nicht dem Unternehmen verbunden fühlen, bei dem sie beschäftigt sind. Auch wenn ihr Anteil von 11% im Jahre 2011 auf nun 16% gestiegen ist, ist der Anteil der Mitarbeiter und Mitarbeiterinnen mit einer hohen emotionalen Bindung zum Unternehmen noch viel zu gering. Bei 33,819 Millionen Erwerbstätigen, die über achtzehn Jahre alt sind, führt diese Situation auf Grund von Fehlzeiten, Fluktuation, Mitarbeiterschwund, Arbeitsunfällen und Qualitätsproblemen zu Mehrkosten für die deutsche Volkswirtschaft in Höhe von mindestens 98,5 Milliarden Euro. Was können Firmen und die einzelnen Führungskräfte unternehmen, um diesen Zustand zu verbessern? Kann durch Anerkennung und Wertschätzung die Bindung der Mitarbeiter und Mitarbeiterinnen und dadurch der Unternehmensgewinn gesteigert werden? The Gallup Institute published the results of its Employee Engagement Index study at the end of March, which it has been conducting for 13 years. Again, 85% of the polled participants over the age of 18 do not feel associated to the company they work for. Although the percentage has increased from 11% in 2011 to 16%, the percentage of employees with a high level of emotional attachment to their company is quite low. As Germany has 33,819 million employees over the age of 18, this lack of attachment leads to issues such as absenteeism, employee turnover, work force decline, work-related accidents and quality issues; which in turn increases the costs for the German economy by at least 98.5 billion Euros. What can companies and individual managers do to improve this situation? Can employee commitment/ retention be improved through employee appreciation and recognition and thus increase business profits? De zomer van 1917 was er één van belangrijke internationale en nationale politieke en militaire gebeurtenissen, maar ook het moment waarop aan het IJzerfront Vlaamse soldaten zich manifesteerden en de spanningen met de politieke en militaire hiërarchieën een hoogtepunt bereikten. Alveringem en de figuur van onderpastoor Cyriel Verschaeve stonden hierin centraal.De aankomst eind juni van de eerste Noord-Amerikaanse troepen in Europa gaf de Eerste Wereldoorlog wellicht een beslissende wending. In Duitsland deed zich een wissel van de macht voor. Met de ontketening van een totale onderzeese oorlog werd alles in het teken van een slotoverwinning gesteld. De machtsverschuiving leidde in bezet België tot meer opeisingen van goederen en mensen met verscherpte armoede, honger en dwangarbeid als gevolg.Aan het front nam het ongenoegen over het officiële triomfalisme in de pers onder soldaten toe. Daarenboven voelden vele Vlaamse soldaten zich achtergesteld door overwegend Franstalige officieren.Cyriel Verschaeve was het aanspreekpunt en de mentor van de Vlaamsgezinde soldaten die aan de basis van de frontbeweging lagen. Zijn autoriteit en populariteit had hij vóór de oorlog verworven door zijn geschriften en lezingen.Zijn houding zinde noch de kerkelijke noch de politieke hiërarchie en in de zomer van 1917 stegen de spanningen ten top.Inhoudelijk raakte Verschaeve op dezelfde golflengte als de activisten in bezet België die de Duitse bezetting en de Flamenpolitik gretig aanwendden om substantiële eisen van de vooroorlogse Vlaamse beweging te veroveren (zoals de vernederlandsing van de Gentse universiteit).Met de Russische Februarirevolutie – maart 1917 – was het begin van het einde van de oorlog ingeluid. Uiteindelijk zouden ook Duitse troepen massaal in opstand komen en muiten.__________ The Summer of 1917 in Context The summer of 1917 was one of important international and national political and military events, but also the moment when Flemish soldiers on the Yser Front demonstrated and the tensions with political and military hierarchies reached a high point. Alveringhem and the figure of chaplain Cyriel Verschaeve were central to this story.The arrival in the end of June of the first United States troops in Europe was perhaps a decisive turning point in the First World War. In Germany there was a change in power. With the unleashing of unrestricted submarine warfare, all their hopes were pinned on a swift victory. In occupied Belgium, the shift in power led to more requisitions of goods and people, with more poverty, hunger and forced labour as a result.On the front, dissatisfaction with the official triumphalism in the press grew among the soldiers. In addition, many Flemish soldiers felt discriminated against by overwhelmingly French-speaking officers.Cyriel Verschaeve was the point of contact and mentor for Flemish-minded soldiers who formed the basis of the Front Movement. He had acquired authority and popularity before the war through his writings and lectures.His attitude pleased neither the political nor the ecclesiastical hierarchy, and in the summer of 1917, tensions rose to the top.Verschaeve was largely on the same wavelength as the Activists in occupied Belgium, who eagerly welcomed the German occupation and Flamenpolitik to accomplish the major goals of the prewar Flemish Movement, such as the transformation of the University of Ghent into a Dutch-language institution.The Russian “February Revolution” (March in the Gregorian Calendar) in 1917 ushered in the beginning of the end of the war. Russian troops were tired of the war and many fell under the influence of the Bolsheviks who wished to end the war. Finally, German troops would also come to revolt and mutiny en masse.

Abstract:
The present dissertation investigates similes and their importance in Eichendorff’s narrative work. The sources of the investigation consist of seven of Eichendorff’s narratives. Their 734 similes make up the corpus, which is presented in its entirety in the appendix. The context of the similes is partly included as well. Initially, I define the concept of “simile” more precisely, partly distancing myself from the definitions found in classical dictionaries of literary terms. After this, I describe my procedure for analysis in detail. This turned out to be necessary, since there was no similar study to be found on this topic in the extensive literature on Eichendorff. The search for models of types of similes brought me back to antique rhetoric as well as to Middle High German epic poems. In the first analysis, the types of similes occurring in the corpus are presented. The syntactic structures of image receivers and image givers are used as criteria. Four structures of similes occurred: a) classical similes and b) similes with image givers, which represent adverbial clauses and c) as / as if – clauses or are d) subject-related. The frequency and the development of frequency of types of similes are presented as well. In the second step of the thesis, I investigate whether similes tend to depict conditions/qualities or procedures/actions. It turned out that similes reflecting conditions/qualities, i.e. epic similes, dominated strongly. The high number of similes could possibly be explained by the functions carried out by epic similes in narrative texts. In the third part, I concern myself with the question whether the similes of the corpus are imaginative representations only and what kind of sensorial perceptions they express. Admittedly, the dominating percentage of the similes proved to be images, but more than fifteen per cent consist of sounds and other sensorial perceptions. Furthermore, imaginative similes, but also sounding similes express motion, so that they illustrate pictures in motion and sounding motion respectively. These come close to synaesthesia, whereas only five similes illustrate „pure“ synaesthesia. In contrast, subject-related similes are perceptions of different sensations and feelings, illustrating the inner life of a character not shared by any other character. Finally, the semantic content of the similes is investigated in order to determine the metamorphosis, i.e. the trope transfer from proprium to improprium. It turned out that only the classical simile originating in antique rhetoric is suitable for a semantic analysis. Above all, there is great variation in the trope transfer. The metamorphosis human being → nature dominates strongly, which makes the narrative text appear as a palimpsest, in which yet another world glimmer in front of the human being behind every character. However, the many trope transfers that convey reality → unreality could be interpreted as transitions and as a “magical code” of Eichendorff. Furthermore, the semantic analysis uncovers content and motives of classical similes. It becomes clear that pre-constructed – and only pre-constructed - content is imitated here. Consequently, it can be asserted that Eichendorff’s great number of similes constitute or at least contribute to the formulaic manner (according to Kohlschmidt) and the intertextuality (according to Nienhaus) in Eichendorff’s narrative work. Above all, the subject-related simile type turns out to be a typical representative of Romanticism because of its subjectivism. Together with its preformed semantic content, it constitutes the “romantic formula” of Eichendorff’s work.

Abstract:
This thesis studies word order variations in Swiss-German sentences that contain infinitival complements. Such sentences exhibit interesting word order. Verbs can be in different orders and the objects selected by these verbs can be in different positions relative to them. The aim of this thesis is to give a general account of these word order facts based solely on structural properties of the complements in the underlying structure. In particular, it is claimed that Swiss-German verbs that take infinitival complements do not all select the same type of complements. Some verbs (like modals, perception verbs and causatives) select VPs, others (like raising verbs) select IPs and others (like control verbs) select IPs or CPs. Mechanisms such as extraposition, verb raising and proliticization then apply to different structures in order for the sentence to satisfy T-linking. Extraposition applies to IPs and CPs, verb raising to IPs and VPs and procliticization to verbs that are sister to VPs.

Abstract:
Within the framework of Government-Binding Theory, this thesis argues that the Germanic languages, including German and related languages, should be analyzed as having INFL-second underlying work order. Contrary to traditional generative treatments of the so-called "verb-second" (V2) phenomenon, it is claimed here, in light of certain subtle asymmetries, that the final target site of the moved verb is INFL (I$ sp0)$ in sentences with pre-verbal subjects and COMP (C$ sp0)$ in those with pre-verbal non-subjects.
It is further maintained that an analysis, as modified and extended in the thesis, in which verb movement is triggered by the Empty Category Principle (ECP) is superior, on both conceptual and empirical grounds, to other theories advanced by generativists to date. A wide variety of clause types in the modern Germanic languages, including in particular German V2 complements and Icelandic infinitival complements, are examined, the final chapter being devoted to a proposal concerning German "parentheticals".
