Abstract:
AbstractIn 2003 John Fien presented an argument for environmental education to encompass deep and wide caring for human and nonhuman nature (Fien, 2003). His philosophical discussion of care outlined work by Nel Noddings (1984; 1992). In this paper I continue that project by indicating how Noddings' work provides signposts for environmental educators to think about their students' relationships with the nonhuman natural world. I argue that one consequence of Noddings' conception of care is that advocacy for considering humans to be a part of nature might be counterproductive to developing a student's capacity to understand a caring relationship with nature. In conclusion I draw on the structure of a care ethic to suggest practical implications for environmental education and the development of a relational self.

Abstract:
Rūpesčio etika šiuolaikinės moralės filosofijos lauke yra gana naujas, vienalytiškumu bei griežtai apibrėžtu žodynu nepasižymintis darinys. Rūpesčio etika užima kritinę poziciją tradicinių etinių teorijų atžvilgiu, tačiau kai kurie jos atstovai, ieškodami tvirtesnio filosofinio pagrindo, siekia įtraukti ją į dorybių etikos teoriją. Šiame straipsnyje siūloma kitokia strategija: įtraukti rūpesčio etiką į Emmanuelio Levino filosofijos kontekstą. Analizuojant vienos žymiausių rūpesčio etikos atstovių Nel Noddings idėjas ir lyginant jas su Levino filosofija siekiama atskleisti abiejų etinių diskursų sankirtos taškus ir bendradarbiavimo galimybes. Straipsnyje teigiama, kad Levino etika suteikia Noddings natūralistinei rūpesčio etikai gilesnį normatyvinį pagrindą ir platesnį filosofinį kontekstą jos kontroversiškoms sąvokoms.Pagrindiniai žodžiai: rūpesčio etika, Noddings, Levinas.Ethics of Care and Emmanuel LevinasRenata BikauskaitėSummaryIn the context of the contemporary moral philosophy ethics of care appears to be quite a new discipline that lacks homogeneity and a well-defined moral vocabulary. Ethics of care is highly critical of the traditional ethical theories, though a few representatives, who are looking for well-established philosophical grounds, try to subsume it under the category of theory of virtue ethics. In this paper a different approach emerges which seeks to incorporate the ethics of care within the philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas. By analysing the ideas of Nel Noddings – one of the best known representatives of the ethics of care – and comparing them with the philosophy of Levinas an attempt is made to describe the overlaps between these two ethical discourses and explore the possibilities of their cooperation. This paper claims that Levinas’ ethics provides a deeper normative ground for the naturalistic care ethics of Nodings and a wider philosophical context for its controversial notions. Keywords: Ethics of care, Noddings, Levinas.

Abstract:
This article draws from Nel Noddings’ ethics of care as a basis for analysing the political effects of the burgeoning Social Investment approach to governance in Aotearoa New Zealand. To assess the effects of the Social Investment paradigm of governance in relation to early childhood care and education, this article commences with an historical analysis of the relationships between the concepts of ‘care’ and ‘education’ through the history of Aotearoa New Zealand in relation to early childhood education and care. Following this, the burgeoning Social Investment paradigm will be charted. Then, the major principles of Noddings’ ethics of care are outlined and utilised to scrutinise current and potential effects the Social Investment paradigm will have on early childhood education and care and the discourses of ‘care’ and ‘education’. Foucauldian theories augment Noddings’ theories to highlight the bio-politics of care.

Full text
Abstract:
Tiivistelmä. Tutkimukseni tarkoituksena on avata Nel Noddingsin välittämisen etiikan teorian keskeisimpiä käsitteitä ja pohtia niiden merkitystä lasten kasvatuksessa. Olen rajannut tarkastelun koskemaan kouluissa tapahtuvaa kasvatusta.

Abstract:
Nel Noddings is a philosopher of education who has developed an interesting thought that is useful to construct a theory of education free from gender biases. Her approach to education reveals the need to transform social practices towards ethics of care. Noddings' educational proposal is inspiring to develop curricula more adapted to the current needs of the citizenship in process of transformation towards new relations between men and women in order they become more egalitarian and less restricted with gender corsets. The thesis defends that is possible and desirable a school curriculum based on the value and the practice of caring and, therefore it proposes rethinking theory of education and school practices in order to avoid the hierarchical dicotomization that devalues the feminine and facilitates the subordination of women. Finally, discusses three of the fundamental budgets on which the emeritus teacher of Stanford's University builds her thought about ethics of care.

Abstract:
This study explores the hitherto unexamined phenomenon of queer-care in higher education from the teacher educators' perspectives. While care in education has been the subject of scholarly interest for many years and demonstrating caring for the wellbeing of students is an important component of teaching, the lack of attention to queer-care is a significant oversight in the body of care research and teacher education. Pertinent to this study is the investigation of how well Noddings' enactments of care (modeling, dialogue, practice, and confirmation) address the care needs of queer students.
Four teacher educators shared stories of their efforts to care for the emotional wellbeing of their queer students. As the fifth teacher educator in this work, I investigate my journey to becoming a queer-care practitioner, and my own practice of queer-care. The theoretical frameworks of qualitative and phenomenological research and feminist theory undergird this study. Two processes of analysis were employed, the first being the key sensitizing concepts of Noddings' enactments of care as points of entry into an understanding of the teacher educators' narratives of queer-care. The second level of analysis used the insights so gleaned to guide the focus of the self-study undertaken in this work.
Analysis of the teacher educators' narratives indicates that the practice of queer-care, while sharing certain similarities, is idiosyncratic, complicated, lonely, and often exhausting work. Alongside these findings are indicators that queer-care as practiced by these teacher educators is welcomed by queer students as being all too rare in their university experience, and of benefit to their sense of wellbeing. Findings also reveal that Noddings' enactments of care neither include nor address the particular care needs of queer students. This led me to identify particular care needs of queer students as being those of unwavering discretion, absolute safety, full social membership, and unstinting succour. This necessary awareness expands Noddings' model of care allowing it to include and be responsive to queer students.
This research has implications for teacher educators and any educators concerned with the wellbeing of queer students. It provides suggestions to enrich caring practice in teacher education programs and field experience.

Abstract:
In this essay I will defend Nel Noddings care ethics by arguing against Michael Slotes critique of it, while also presenting critique of Slotes virtue ethical version of care ethics. The essential difference between the theories is in my opinion that Noddings theory gives relations so-called ontological priority. I will be arguing that the relational ontology vies better guidance in care situations, but it is also preferrable as an metaethical fundament. I will do this by presenting a situation where Slotes virtue ethics judges an act as caring, even though that’s not necessarily the case. I will then argue that Noddings care ethics demands a more amplie picture of the situation and therefore also gives better guidance, which I argue is valid generally in moral practice. In this essay I will also present arguments against Slote by bringing to light how the feasability of his arguments and theory presupposes a so-called individualistic ontologi (unlike Noddings relational ontology). A relational ontology presupposes a relation between two (or more) individuals in a situation, while the individualistic doesn’t consider that fact. The relational ontology is important for most of care ethics advocates, which is why I contend that Noddings theory is to prefer ahead of Slotes theory. Therefore I argue for using the relational ontology also as a metaethical foundation.

To elucidate the important contribution of care ethics in improving human relations and social intimates, this work reveals the fragility and lack of ethics on the formation of a just society, equal, peaceful and caring. To this end, we study on the moral development of men and women, warning of the natural differences between the sexes, which change for both the way of seeing life and live it - which does not imply inferiority to some genres. From this study it is clear that the natural care is innate to humans, it provides a tendency to act for the good of all life forms and nature as a whole. But it is evident here a greater sensitivity of women to such care because they possess perception and more emotion than men, which make them more participatory and involved in relationships. This greater openness to care found in women, due in part to the strong and lasting relationship with their mothers. Thus is revealed the power that women have to positively change the direction of human relationships, providing careful with your example, protective and caring, the awakening of a new and comprehensive ethics - opens to the truth, and features especially for affections. Therefore, the care ethics arises from the life experiences of women and aims, through them, to join the men's morality in order to bring out the relevant fact of interdependence between human beings, of human fragility and the need for relationships to the fullness of life

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this paper, trajectory design for a nodding multi-beam Lidar system is studied. While the multi-beam Lidar is inherently 3-dimensional and does not require nodding to create a 3D scan, the vertical resolution of these units can be limited, depending on the number of Lidar beams and their spread. This is especially important when viewing small objects and objects at distance. This vertical resolution can be improved by placing the Lidar on a nodding mechanism, allowing the beams to be repositioned. Typically, this mechansism undergoes a raster scan pattern, where the Lidar is slowly rotated and each line of Lidar data is collected in order. In contrast, this work presents the use of Lissajous-like scan pattern, in which the depth points are collected while the cradle is moving quickly. This trajectory allows for a trade-off between scan speed and resolution that is not possible when using a raster scan. In this paper, relevant theory and prior work is presented, simulations are shown that support the proposed theory, and proof-of-concept experiments are performed to show the feasibility of the approach.
