Full textThe aim of the present socio-linguistic study is to ascertain the place, in Zaire and Congo, of the languages of these two countries and to determine how they could best contribute to their development all fields. In a first part, after an in-depth study of the lingual practices of Belgian, English, French and Portuguese colonial administrations in the occupied African black territories and a survey of the linguistic studies done by Europeans before the independences, the author of the thesis, presents a vast picture of the present linguistic situation of the states of black Africa, of the different policies of the various governments in this field, as they are conditioned by the practice of the former coloniser, and research made, up to now, by African and non-African specialists. The second part deals with the particular case of Congo and Zaire. After a brief geographical, political, economic and social picture, the author then defines the present linguistic situation of these two countries as regards the statute of the languages, their relationships, and their use. He then deals with the problem of the necessary promotion of Congolese and Zairese languages, and determines its objectives, the place of linguistic plans in the general plans of national development, and also the choice of one or several national languages. As a conclusion, after an assessment of the study, the author presents some personal reflexions on the necessary linguistic policies in Congo and Zaire, so as to allow Congolese and Zairese languages to reach the statute of modern languages. This to make them assume their role in the field of cultural independence and national identity, but also to express the concepts of the sciences and techniques of our time

Full textFor a number of social scientist, such as Fanon (1952) an increased contact between black and whites affects the negro's self-esteem, perception and body image as well as its influence his racial contacts readyness. We worked out with a sample of students from different ethnic groups : congolese, french caribeans, french to verify this thesis. As a result, it appear that the african self-esteem is as high as the one of the white student and his body image does not seem to be altered even though some european centered traits preferences have been observed. These results enabled us to state that increased interracial contact is not automatically disabling for congolese

Full textThrough the conflict between tradition and modernity, the oil phenomenon of the pointe-noire of congo has partially contributed in the bursting of some cultural and social kongo values. Workmen and employees, kongo belonging to elf-congo and agip-recherches congo and partly separated from their traditional environment, are now facing problems such as : -remaining thoroughly faithful to the logic of a world sticking to traditional structures which some sides less and less appeal to reality ; - or including more and more modernity, so as to improve the structures ; - or furthermore combining modernism as a complementary element with the traditional society. Today the lineage relations are mainly struck by this problem

Full textThe present work shows the way american films enter in black francophone africa, particularly in the congo. It also compares the screen time of american films, the gate-money yielded by these films to the french ones and films of other origins. With a questionnaire focused on a sample of the congolese population, mainly movie goers, we try to know how the united states of america is seen by the congolese through american films. Moreover, we intend to analyse the influences of american films on the congolese way of life according to the data collected, this thanks on the one hand to the questionnaire mentioned before and to an observation of the congolese society during our stay in this country, on the other. Finally we want to demonstrate that the vitality and the relative stability of the congolese culture, french support to the congolese television through "canal france international" (c. F. I. ) and soviet influence on thousands of congolese students trained for years in the former soviet bloc enable the congolese society to resist to a large expansion of american values in this country

Full textFlexibility, mondialisation and employability are keys words in the context of our African reality. In order to adapt, the Congolese labour laws have been ambitiously reoriented towards an economic finality, whereas the labour of Gabon still retain a purely protective finality. Unfortunately, the former, owing to its liberal orientation, only imperfectly ensures the rights and guarantees of the workers. The protectionism which characterises the latter country has a creed of overbearing legalistic positivism, and as an instrument rigid and all embracing rules whose volume, incessant flow and incoherence as regards market economy and the OHADA, cannot but give rise to confusion and interrogations. Between flexibility and rigidity, an extension of the role of collective negociation would appear to be the ideal means to adapt to the changes which are taking place. This would entail total participation by the Congolese and the Gabonese Unions. It is no longer a question of simply negiciating additional advantages but of the actual contents of the rules to be applied. At the same time, the extreme poverty of the rural populations must lead Congo and Gabon to move beyond programmes of stabilisation and structural adjustments, in order to launch growth strategies to create jobs. Tha adaptation of labour laws in rural areas leads naturally to a redifinition of the word "worker" and would seem to necessitate a new right : the right to a job or professional activity. Whence comes the necessity for a normative modification of the basis of labour laws in French speaking countries of Central Africa (in a general way). This new ideal of working relations which moves from the idea of work towards that a job in the sense of a professional activity must not however lead us to anticipate a change of rationality in the way in which working relations are understood in the legal sense. As far as social security systemes are concerned, they are rudimentary in both countries, althought the Gabonese is moving towards universality

Full textDemocracy emerged as a major challenge for African societies throughout the 1990s. The religious dynamic constitutes a key element in the social and political changes associated with democratic transition. In contrast to the West, religion appears to be an element that accompanies political modernization in African societies. Through its strong political involvement, the Catholic Church of the Democratic Republic of Congo is attempting to contribute to the political modernization of the DRC- including the improvement of its democratic deficit. By acting as a social partner, the Catholic Church hopes to increase citizen participation in politics and instill awareness of democratic values. It is legitimate/ important to examine whether the interaction between Catholicism and the political system of the DRC is likely to give rise to a democratic political culture. Using a dialectical approach that opposes the political discourse and actions from the top (top-down politics) with political thought from the bottom (bottom-up politics), this paper will analyze the emergence of a political culture molded by Catholicism and civil society in the DRC
