Full textThe study of predator diets is widespread in ecology although observing and documenting foraging habits of predators remains challenging. Our ability to document the diet composition of predators largely determines our understanding of predator-prey interactions as well as of the structure of food webs. My Ph.D thesis focuses on the ecology and diet of the wolf (Canis lupus) and black bear (Ursus americanus) in northern Québec and Labrador over the ranges of migratory caribou (Rangifer tarandus) of the Rivière-aux-Feuilles and Rivière George herds. Even though our understanding of anthropogenic impacts on populations of migratory caribou has progressed in recent years, caribou contribution to the diet of its main predators as well as the role of predation on the population dynamics of caribou herds remain mostly unknown. The first part of my thesis focuses on the complementarity of different approaches of diet reconstruction in a free-ranging context. I then took advantage of that complementarity to determine the diet of caribou predators. My work shows that the local and seasonal abundances of caribou are key factors explaining their contribution to the diet of each predator, especially for wolves. Both wolves and black bears showed great flexibility in their feeding habits taking advantage of spatial and temporal variations in the diversity and abundance of food sources. Such variability argues that caribou-predator interactions should be regarded independently and as dynamic components for each herd in order to account for the relative abundance of caribou as well as that of other food sources. My thesis also provides a new perspectiveon the ecology and the role of black bear in the food web of eastern North America by providing the first evidences of the importance of animal-based food sources in the diet of black bears in the harsh northern habitats of Québec. Although wolf-caribou and bear-caribou interactions have been widely studied, my work offers a new perspective by contrasting these interactions at the scale of two herds with distinct abundances. Finally, my work improves our understanding of caribou-predator relationships by shedding light on the contribution of migratory caribou to the diet of both predator species and provides a detailed perspective on the structure and dynamics of the food web in northern Québec and Labrador involving those species.

Full textThis research analyzes the afroquebecer rappers of the community of Limoilou (Limoilou Starz) and their friends of Montcalm in Quebec City as actors who appropriate elements of identity, social struggle and economic survival from global and American hip-hop, to help solve their particular challenges. The merits of the various struggles through their art and specific techniques (lyrics, public speaking and in medias and stand-ups, branding campains, online networks) are acquired by multiple sociohistorically rooted forms of capital. From an ethnographic study conducted with 31 participants in the city of Quebec, the concept of "negociated reception" is used to describe the process of resistance of the meaning to these different dominations produced by the actors in positions of power. These modes of domination come from state institutions agents (such as Quebec City Police officers), corporations agents (such as managers of entertainment clubs and of major and independent music labels), and also from individual or groups of peers of hip-hop milieu, through bullying strategies. he “emergent-fit” theory (Guillemette, 2006; Guillemette and Luckerhoff, 2009 ) presents hip-hop music as a renogociated musical field (Bourdieu, 1976 and 1989; Rimmer, 2010), and a multidimensional structure (social, identity, political, and economic) that intersects (through multiple categories such as place of residence, race, and economic capacity), and take shape in and through the mental and physical dispositions (habitus) of the studied actors. The results of this research show that some rappers are "resistant'' to the dominations of their various oppressors. Some others are nevertheless accepting the domination from national ideologies, entrepreneurs and peers, although they are conscious of it. Finally, one small group of studied rappers rejects it completely. Thus, intersectional appropriation of dominant meaning through hip-hop music leads to multiple readings of domination and resistance.

This research project is in the field of public health and focuses on the study of poverty, its links to health and the role health and social resources can play in this regard. The project, which takes the form of a thesis composed of articles, pursued three objectives. First, it aimed to better understand how men living in poverty experience and perceive their situation and conceive of ways to change it. Secondly, it attempted to elucidate how health and social services influence the processes that cause men to fall in, and sometimes escape from, poverty. Thirdly, it drew on the knowledge thus generated to suggest interventions relevant to the fight against poverty. This qualitative and participatory oriented research was done in collaboration with a community Center in a disadvantaged neighbourhood of Montreal. The data were collected through a diary, 80 days of participant observation, 22 semi-directed interviews and 6 group discussions with men living in poverty. We based our analytical strategy on Charmaz's interpretive grounded theory methods and Bertaux's life-history approach. The first objective of the thesis is covered by two chapters. In Chapter 3, the first article of the thesis presents the representations of poverty and its exit collected through a popular education tool named My life course in the «red, yellow, green». Chapter 4, a complementary chapter, presents the experiences of poverty as perceived by men themselves and reveals the main dimensions they see about it. In addition to identifying several significant dimensions of poverty and its exit, the results of these two chapters show how the perspectives of the participants about their situation can challenge commonly held social representations about them. In Chapter 5 we first summarize the main results pertaining the second objective of our thesis with «Charlot Laforce», a participatory validation tool used in the study. The second article of the thesis then presents the experiences of men living in deep poverty regarding their decision not to seek out health and social services in moments of crisis, even when they recognized needing help. The results about the third objective of the thesis are found in chapter 6. Men's suggestions and recommendations of relevant interventions to fight poverty and improve services are offered there. Finally, Chapter 7 reviews the main findings of the study, the limits and strengths of the project and the implications of these results for future research and interventions.

Recent research has demonstrated the importance of sexual reproduction for many “clonal” arctic and subarctic species such as crowberry (Empetrum hermaphroditum). Our study focused on a population that is undergoing rapid expansion through sexual reproduction on a subarctic sand dune system in Northern Québec. We described the recent dynamics of this population, evaluated individual performance across the topographic gradient and investigated climate-growth relationships. Between 2007 and 2012, the population experienced extensive recruitment, low mortality and rapid growth, contributing to its expansion. However, competition in the most heavily colonized areas of the dune system seemed to limit growth and reproduction. Positive climate-growth relationships suggest that recent warming in the study area promoted the rapid expansion observed since the mid-1990s. Further colonization of the dune system could lead to decreased diversity and delayed succession.

Full textRegeneration in logging trails following irregular shelterwood cutting was assessed in Quebec’s boreal forest. In each of five sites, a regeneration inventory was carried out and study plots were installed for this evaluation. Two years after harvest, average regeneration density and stocking in logging trails were 10 780 stems•ha-1 and 77%, respectively. Regeneration density was negatively affected by increasing slash cover across all study sites. Seedling establishment was influenced by direct seeding, position within the logging trail, and substrate type. Environmental conditions were adequate: light availability was sufficient and severe soil compaction was limited. Direct seeding was not very effective on these sites, but the planted black spruce stock responded well. Results suggest that regeneration in logging trails was abundant and well distributed in the first two years after harvest.

Full textThe value of forest products from softwood stands depends on stems volume and taper, internal defects, but also on physical and mechanical wood properties, especially stiffness, since softwood lumber is primarily used for structural purposes. The lumber stiffness is evaluated in sawmills through visual or mechanical gradings. In forest, this knowledge does not exist and it is not possible to locate the regions or the forest stands with a high lumber stiffness, neither to evaluate the value of forest products and the economic profitability of forest management scenarios considering this key attribute. This lack of knowledge is mainly due to substantial investments associated with an inventory of wood fibre quality, which involves the sampling of thousands of trees and very demanding laboratory tests. It is in this context that the near-infrared spectroscopy was evaluated as a rapid, non-destructive method for estimating physical and mechanical wood properties. Ecogeographic variation in black spruce clear wood properties was first investigated for the two main vegetation types of the managed boreal forest of the province of Quebec (chapter 1). Wood growing in pure black spruce stands had longer mature fibers, a significantly denser wood with better mechanical characteristics than the wood growing in stands mixed with balsam fir. A scaling-up modeling approach, based on ring data from 3,350 inventory plots, has improved the performance of all models, explaining, at the stand level, 47%, 57%, 63% and 63% of variance in wood density, modulus of elasticity, microfibril angle and mature fiber length with estimated root mean square errors of 8.9 kg/m³, 0.52 GPa, 0.60° and 0.06 mm respectively. The potential of near-infrared spectroscopy to determine the transition from juvenile to mature wood in black spruce was then assessed (chapter 2). Good to excellent calibration statistics (R², ratio of performance to deviation) were obtained for basic density (0.85, 1.8), microfibril angle (0.79, 2.2), and modulus of elasticity (0.88, 2.9). Two-segment linear regressions were applied to microfibril angle profiles to determine the transition age. The values obtained using SilviScan data were compared with those obtained using near-infrared spectroscopy predicted data. The average transition age (23 years ± 7 years) was slightly underestimated by near-infrared spectroscopy with a mean prediction error (and 95% limits of agreement) of -2.2 ± 6.3 years (-14.6/10.1). These results suggest that the transition age from juvenile to mature wood could be predicted by near-infrared spectroscopy. Finally, the near-infrared spectroscopy was used for estimating the regional variation in wood density and stiffness for the main boreal species of Quebec (black spruce, balsam fir, jack pine, paper birch, trembling aspen) (chapter 3). An automated near-infrared system was developed for this purpose and calibrated using SilviScan data. Basic density and wood stiffness were estimated on 30,159 increment cores from 10,573 inventory plots. The observations in wood density and stiffness were spatially autocorrelated on longer distances in hardwoods than softwoods. A uniform latitudinal gradient related to climate was observed in paper birch and trembling aspen. Conversely, spatial distribution in wood density and modulus of elasticity was not uniform in softwoods, suggesting a more limited environmental adaptability in comparison to the hardwood species studied. This thesis has made major advances in the development of a method for inventorying wood fibre quality in Quebec. Regional variation in wood density and stiffness is now known for the main boreal species of Quebec. Future work will focus on estimating these properties at the forest stand level.

Full textClimate influence on plant growth is a long-known fact. Global changes have driven research efforts forward to assess their impact on natural ecosystems, both in terms of species distribution and abundance, but also through commercial species yield studies. This study aims at determining the effect of climatic variables on the growth of black spruce and balsam fir in the Eastern Canadian boreal forest, through the use of dendrochronological data. It will then be possible to identify the main climatic modifiers involved in the growth of boreal stands, depending on their age and location. Focusing on a nonlinear least squares model including climatic and age modifiers, basal area growth modelling detected differences between balsam fir and black spruce. The results indicate that both species respond primarily to the length of the growing season and to maximum summer temperatures. Black spruce also seems to be more sensitive to drought. Models based on age and location along a north-south gradient highlighted a few differences, particularly regarding the greater response of young stands to climate, specifically to temperatures, as well as the old stands response to solar radiations. Contrary to balsam fir, the results revealed a relative independence of black spruce to the latitudinal gradient. These results are discussed in a context of climate change, particularly in regards of the productivity of both species through the lengthening of the growing season (higher yield for both species) and the increasing temperatures in conjunction with changes in the rainfall patterns (lower yield due to possible droughts for spruce).
Jutras, Sylvain. "Growth of tree species and hydrology in managed forested peatlands, Quebec." Thesis, Université Laval, 2006. http://www.theses.ulaval.ca/2006/23643/23643.pdf.
Full textThe water budget of forested peatland sites is regulated by a complex combination of hydrological processes. Relatively stable in natural environments, this budget is exposed to major changes by forest management activities affecting the tree canopy. This Ph.D. thesis aimed to study the specific interrelations existing between growth and yield of tree species, above-ground competition, and hydrology of Quebec forested peatlands. The first chapter aimed to determine the pertinence of using drainage to transform unproductive black spruce stands into productive ones. Results showed that even if tree growth was significantly increased by drainage, only intensive drainage using narrow ditch spacing would enable stand productivity improvement. The four other chapters intended to evaluate the influence of the vegetation on the regulation of hydrological processes and, indirectly, tree growth. The water table has been monitored on a pre-mature forested peatland site to evaluate its behaviour following drainage and harvesting (Chapter 2). Comparable water table monitoring has been done in densely regenerated post-harvest and drained peatland sites to measure the watering-up after precommercial thinning (Chapter 3). Both studies demonstrated the valuable water table regulation capacities of the treed vegetation in forested peatlands. Since this vegetation has an evident influence on soil growing conditions, tree growth should be affected by the presence of neighbours. The role of biological drainage (Chapter 4) and the presence of competition (Chapter 5) on growth have been evaluated for drained sites. The water table regulation power of the vegetation stratum was found to be favourable to tree growth, but only in specific situations. Management practices that preserve notable amount of vegetation on forested peatland stands seem to be the most pertinent guideline that should be considered in these fragile ecosystems.

This thesis refers to the analysis of the identity-based narrative (resulting from music, imagery and speech) of the Québec black metal community (MNQ). Having developed in the province of Quebec around 2005, this still active community contains several groups (including Forteresse, Brume d’Automne and Chasse-Galerie) using the black metal style. Coming from Northern Europe, this style was created in the 1980s and deals mainly with occult topics, the valorization of pre-Christian cultures or even nationalism, and this, with the help of a lo-fi sound production. The particularity of the MNQ community lies in the adaptation of the black metal style to the Québec context. Thus, musicians project a romantic vision of an independent Québec through music, imagery and speeches. In doing so, they create an identity-based narrative, where the various events related to the history of the province are revisited to better fit into the black metal ideology to which they adhere. To better understand how the musical narrative is structured, as well as those arising from the interpretation of the images of the booklets and the discourse of the members of the community, the concepts of phonographic, paraphonographic and communal narrative were used. The junction of these three levels of narrative makes it possible to reveal the « identity-based » narrative, a concept elaborated by the philosopher Paul Ricoeur. Indeed, he argues that our personal and collective identity is ordered through narrative and that the interpretation of different historical events – by the members of a given community – forms a particular identity-based narrative. To understand this identity-based narrative, I conducted 21 ethnographic interviews with members of the community and performed the analysis of 48 songs total from 10 MNQ groups. Thus, the junction of these levels of narrative has fostered a better understanding of the specific musical, visual and discursive elements of this community which, in addition to reusing the ideological and aesthetic codes specific to black metal, draws on Québec cultural and historical references.
Full textNature conservancy is the main goal of wilderness protected areas. Some conservation strategies, focused on concepts such as ecological integrity, ecosystem management, connectivity, buffer zones, or charismatic megafauna protection have been elaborated in the recent years to reach this goal. The American black bear is a good model to evaluate the efficiency of these conservation strategies since many factors can affect the demography of this species, such as hunting and trapping, habitat loss, and forest exploitation. The central question of my thesis is then the following: “Can a protected area such as La Mauricie National Park of Canada be able to maintain ecological integrity of a large mammal such as the American black bear?”. I used data from the long-term (1990-2005) monitoring of the black bear population in La Mauricie National Park of Canada. In the first chapter, I evaluated the influence of hunting and trapping in the periphery of the park, as well as the influence of poaching and nuisance kills on the survival of bears. Main results indicated that human-caused mortalities have a significant effect on this bear population. In the second chapter, I undertook a population viability analysis. The growth rates estimated with survival and reproduction data indicated that the number of females appears stable in the population, but that the number of males would decline if the population became isolated. In the third chapter, I emphasized the importance of accounting for sampling error in population viability analysis. Finally, in the fourth chapter, I determined the size of the greater ecosystem of La Mauricie National Park of Canada, based on the study of the movements of bears. The results of this thesis show the importance of the territory located outside of a protected area. In my opinion, we will not be able to achieve the long-term protection of the integrity of a bear population in a park of the size of La Mauricie National Park of Canada as long as conservation objectives, supported by the establishment of buffer zones around protected areas, are not integrated in a large-scale greater ecosystem management plan.

Full textBoreal black spruce forests (Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP) store great amounts of carbon in the living biomass and in the soil. Fire regime characteristics (e.g. fire return interval, fire intensity, fire season and severity) play a central role in the storage and flow of carbon, by modifying the distribution and transfer of material among pools. There is little doubt in the scientific community that climate change will cause changes in the temporal and spatial variables that control the frequency and severity of fires. A demographic diameter-class structured model was developed to simulate boreal carbon storage under different fire regimes. This approach incorporates the effect of fire intensity and stand structure measures to simulate fire severity, measured as the proportion of overstory tree mortality. The model allows quantifying and mapping average regional estimates of current and future carbon stocks for the black spruce-feathermoss bioclimatic domain of northern Québec. Simulation results suggest that fire severity increases with fire the intensity. Stand structure is one of the factors that explains the observed variation in boreal fire severity. We simulated carbon stocks and fluxes under seven levels of fire return interval (FRI) and two fire seasons. We tested for an effect of these parameters on average carbon stocks. Carbon stocks were sensitive to IRF's between 60 and 300 years. Soil C stocks were lower for summer fires that occurred during shorter IRF. Finally, we investigated the short-term impacts of climate change under four climatic periods: 1980-2010, 2010-2040, 2040-2070 and 2070-2100. Historical and future FRI maps and historical and forecasted weather data estimated by CanESM2 RCP8.5 were used to drive the growth of forests, decomposition rates, fire regime and C dynamics. In our simulation experiments, the accumulation of carbon in the ecosystem was reduced by 11% by the end of 2100. The results of this study suggest that black spruce forest could be losing their capacity to sequester and store organic C over the next coming decades due to climate change effects on the fire regime and on forest growth.

Full textMany bird species breeding in North America require long term tracking because of their unknown or declining population status. Of those, an important proportion is represented by species associated with open habitats. Open habitats are created every year by clear-cutting in boreal forest but they have been decreasing since last two decades in deciduous and mixed forests of Eastern North America. Due to the important media coverage with conservation NGOs accusing clear-cutting and other types of timber harvest for the loss of old forest and associated species, perception of perturbation of forest made by man is mostly negative. However, clear-cuts, as open habitats, may be important to wildlife. To understand their conservation value, it is necessary to better understand their use by wildlife. The present study focused on a species dependent on open areas, Wilson’s Warbler (Wilsonia pusilla). Populations of this species have been declining importantly since the last 40 years. We evaluated species occurrence in 43 alder sites and 90 clear-cut sites, at the Forêt Montmorency, Québec. We also measured 5 physical traits of captured males (weight, rectrix length, beak length, cap length and wing length) in order to establish if there is a difference between birds found in the two different habitats. Finally, we evaluated which factors of the landscape affected the occurrence of bird in a site, at four different radii (50, 100, 200 and 400 m). We found an equal proportion of Wilson’s Warbler in both habitats and no phenotypic difference was found. Percentage of open area around site was strongly associated with the presence of Wilson’s Warblers, at each radius. Presence of patchy alder and percentage of regeneration between 2 and 4 m high were also associated with the species’ occurrence. Those results throw new light on the habitat of Wilson’s Warblers and highlight the potential role of clear-cuts for the maintenance of its populations. However, the role of clear-cuts will need to addressed with data on reproduction.

Full textThe activity of album personalisation – most often called scrapbooking – results from the customary practice of personal or familial archive creation. Today – in Quebec and elsewhere – this practice is perpetuated and renewed in an art consisting of piecing together various materials into a collage in which family photographs hold a predominant place. As the lines between entertainments, traditional practices and culture blur, it is necessary to question how ethnology approaches these recent and increasingly popular leisure activities. This essay documents the main facets of the scrapbooking practice as it exists in Quebec (Canada). It examines how various aspects of today’s leisure activities influence the creation and transmission of familial heritage. How are today’s personal albums involved in the process of familial heritage creation? This study is based on an ethnological research conducted in the Quebec City region. The oral investigation conducted with scrapbooking lovers made possible the acquirement of knowledge regarding this production and the study of their views on the subject. More specifically, the study is focused on the following aspects: the activity’s logistics and how it relates to creativity and identity, the resulting scrapbooking, the performance context and its influence on the scrapbook’s creation process. Finally, we outlined the role scrapbooking plays in the familial heritage of scrapbookers. As an amateur practice, today’s scrapbooking activity is outside of traditional artistic endeavours due to its renewed form of expression. It is at the heart of several issues related, amongst other things, to mass consumption products and the new information technologies.

In 2018, the province of Québec (Canada) modified its vaccination schedule against human papilloma virus (HPV), replacing the 2-dose nonavalent schedule by a mixed schedule, comprising a single dose of nonavalent vaccine followed by a single dose of bivalent vaccine. However, clinical efficacy and duration of protection conferred by this mixed schedule are not known precisely, implying a level of uncertainty with respect to its population-level impact on HPV-associated diseases. The population-level impact of mixed HPV vaccination in Québec was examined with a mathematical modeling study. We used an individual-based model (HPV-ADVISE) that simulates HPV transmission dynamics at the population level. Impact measures that were considered in this study include model-predicted percentage reduction in incidence rate and in total number of cases of diseases attributable to HPV infections. The effect of uncertainty regarding vaccine efficacy and duration of protection on mixed schedule populational impact was explored with deterministic univariate sensitivity analyses. For precancerous and cancerous lesions attributable to HPV infections, the model globally predicted a small impact difference between the more plausible scenarios for the mixed schedule and the 2-dose nonavalent schedule. This is a consequence of the lesser populational importance of the disease burden attributable to genotypes 31/33/45/52/58 compared to genotypes 16/18. The impact on condyloma (anogenital warts) incidence proved much more sensitive to duration of protection compared to vaccine efficacy. For plausible mixed schedule scenarios, long-term percentage reduction of condyloma incidence rate was predicted between ~ 50 % (20 years protection scenario) and 90 % (lifelong protection and 75 % to 100 % efficacy scenarios). The high variability in model predictions within plausible scenarios suggests that populational surveillance of HPV infections and condyloma incidence following the introduction of the mixed schedule could be indicated.

Full textSpecialized and problem-solving courts emerged at the turn of the 1990s, promoting "community-based" supervision rather than prison sentences for offenders identified with a range "underlying issues" such as homelessness, substance abuse or mental illnesses. In 2013, following in the footsteps of numerous North American cities, Québec announced the creation of its own community court under municipal jurisdiction. This case study unpacks the conceptualization and implementation process of such a dispositif in Québec City. Its methodological approach combines documentary research (legal, political and media documents) and in-depth interviews (15) with key decision makers and partners involved in the development of the court. Analysis draws on political sociology of justice to uncover how the push for a community court is embedded in an agenda of urban "securitization" and "revitalization." The concept of the Therapeutic City is developed to examine the novel style of municipal governance that emerges to reshape the regulation of deviance at the intersection of a number of valued principles and behaviours, from professional sensitivity and personalized treatment to good governance and change in police culture. Rather than merely "softening" punishment, analysis demonstrates how this new normative framework reiterates the authority of legal supervision and the discretionary power of law enforcement. In this regard, research findings constitute a new milestone for understanding the political, moral, and economic processes that underlie judicial innovations, as well as the metamorphoses of social control at the local scale.

Full textWe are currently experiencing an aging of the population in the province of Québec. Even though many elders are food insecure, very few of them resort to food aid programs. However, the reasons behind this low take-up are unknown. This study aims to document the food access strategies used by food insecure lone elders living in the Limoilou neighborhood and to better understand the motives behind their use and non-use of several types of food aid programs (food banks, collective kitchens, etc.). We carried out two waves of fourteen individual interviews with food insecure lone elders from Limoilou, which deepened our understanding of their experience. The results of this study suggest interesting avenues for research and intervention to facilitate their access to food and adapt food aid programs to the elders’ needs and realities.

Full textField experiments were conducted at St. Emmanuel, Quebec, from 1998 to 2000 to investigate the combined effects of water table management and N fertilizer application rates on corn yield, concentrations of NO3- -N in the soil profile and tile subsurface drainage water, denitrification and N2O production rates, and N2O:N2O+N 2 production ratios in the soil profile. There were two water table treatments: free drainage (FD) with open drains at a 1.0 m depth from the soil surface and subirrigation (SI) with a water table depth of 0.6 m below the soil surface, and two N fertilization rates: 120 kg N ha-1 (N120) and 200 kg N ha-1 (N 200) arranged in a split-plot design. Compared to FD, subirrigation reduced NO3--N concentration in the soil by up to 50% and in drainage water by 55 to 73%. Water table had little effect on corn yield during the study period. Greater denitrification rates under SI were not accompanied with greater N2O emissions as ratios of N2O:N2O+N2 were lower under SI than in FD plots. Denitrification rate, N2O emissions, and their ratios were unaffected by N rate.
A second field experiment was initiated from 1999 to 2000 to assess impacts of tillage systems on NO3--N, denitrification, N2O, and ratios of denitrification end-products (N2O:N 2O+N2). The experiment was conducted on long-term momocropped corn experimental plots under conventional tillage (CT), reduced tillage (RT), and no-till (NT), located at the Macdonald Research Farm, McGill University. Soil NO3--N concentrations tended to be lower under RT than under NT or CT. Denitrification and N2O were similar among tillage systems.
Approximately 50% of soil denitrification activity was measured within the 0.15--0.45 m soil layer. Consequently, we propose that sampling the 0--0.15 m soil layer alone, as is usually done, may not give an accurate picture of soil denitrification activity. Dissolved organic carbon concentrations remained high in all soil depths sampled, but was not affected by water table, N rate or tillage system.
